I'm a flight attendant, I'm so very happy this mandate has went away! I went through this whole pandemic, without covid. And trust me, I don't wear my mask when I dont have too. I ate a lot on the plane. I've flown next to coworkers who were covid positive and never caught it, this is sitting next to each other in the galley and eating. Guess when I caught covid? During the vaccine mandate, when all my coworkers rushed out to get the vax, my base came down with a massive covid outbreak, guess from who? Those that went out and got vaxxed. Doesn't add up.
Pilots also, fly next to each other all day, in the Flight deck, and have flown next to pilots that were also covid pilot (wasn't aware of that time) and the other pilot never caught covid. We get new fresh air, every 2 to 3 mins through the cabin, our hepa filters are amazing, and we use great cleaning products that's medical grade on our planes..
I dont like taking freedom away from those who should have a choice.

I have a question about this period of mask mandates, when everyone is wearing masks, everywhere, while in hospital. Doctors working in hospitals had the lowest rate of infection when grouped by profession. If that doesn’t speak to effectiveness then I don’t know what else does.
The key is, because they are trained to use them CORRECTLY AND EFFECTIVELY, they had the greatest success in one of the riskiest environments.
One of the highest rate of infection by profession is police officers. Police groups have been notorious for being vocally anti-mask, not to mention anti-you-know-what in some areas.

I'd like to know too. Early 2010s, I worked in a hospital cafeteria with food. I got scolded for calling out sick with really bad cold symptoms. The message told me: "Don't come in sick but take bettwe care of yourself so you don't get sick." (In other words, pretend you're healthy or lose your job.)
When I had a cold, I wore a mask per workplace policy. My coworkers asked me why since I was vaccinated against the flu. My resonse was a polite version of, "DUDE! I have a bad cold and I'm coughing alot. Do you really want me to risk spreading my germs to a patient? How about an ICU Patient? Change your gloves more frequently."

Great video as usual Dr. Moran. Couple of questions thought about mask wearing on airplanes… I’ve heard that commercial airplanes use Hepa filtration onboard during flights…. If so, would that help reduce Covid-19 transmission onboard during flights? Also, at the start of Covid-19 it seemed like passengers were required to test negative prior to boarding airplanes. Wouldn’t this also help reduce Covid-19 transmission as well? I wish that more accurate studies were completed using KN94 masks 😷 to determine their effectiveness against Covid-19.

Too bad we have not seen any studies on masking follow through to what really counts - does it help reduce severity. Are you better off getting half a dose of something that can hurt you rather than the full dose? Severity of decrease is the only reason we are still talking about covid - less important now with omicron but this question should be studied while we still have some interest to do so.

However, since I'm vaccinated, boosted and caught covid back in March with minimal symptoms there just seems no point now. I have hybrid immunity meaning I am extremely unlikely to catch covid again for at least several months (barring some new variant) and if I can't catch it, I will have nothing to spread to anyone else. I'll probably keep them handy though as they were great at reducing my hay fever symptoms while I was cutting my grass.

Yes, if they fit properly and are regularly changed. The vast majority of infections are via the nose where the virus particles can be sucked in, and where there is a high concentration of ACE2 receptors, and a direct pathway to the lungs (though with Omicron being more of an upper respiratory infection, this may be less significant).

There are two main reasons masks mandate can fail. 1) Masks don't do anything and 2) People are not wearing the masks properly or not at all. A mandate that allows people to not wear their masks is not a mask mandate. I saw someone compare such "mandates" to a submarine going down below the surface with 2 out of 3 door closed. Did the submarine sink because submarine doors fail to keep the water out, or because one has to close all the doors? Before one can start to make claim about submarine doors not being effective at keeping the water out, one would first need to check whether the said doors get shut properly in the first place. I think in the vast majority of cases, the doors were not being shut properly.
Another thing that got us into trouble with this pandemic is the fact that we have been discounting observational studies altogether. Yes, there are confounding variables. But at some point, we have to believe our eyes. I wish I could find a link, but one study looked at mask use in East Asia and how they controlled the pandemic. One cannot deny that until Omicron came along, masking was very effective in those countries. They are an example of what happens when people follow the mandate. They would never think of not covering their nose and mouth, and they were diligent about following the mandate (complete compliance).
In South-Korea, people lived relatively normal lives until earlier this year, when Omicron hit. They were quite horrified to see their daily deaths rise to what we'd been having for months in the US. They made it to February of this year with under 6,000 cumulative deaths, and will likely have 20,000 when this is all said and done. 20,000. For a population of over 51 millions.
There is not the shadow of a doubt in my mind that masks (when worn and properly so) were highly effective for most of the pandemic. I am more doubtful when it comes to the more transmissible versions we've had recently. It may be that medical grade, fitted K95 masks are now required. And since we've thrown out the window the idea that masks protect others as well as the wearer, it's even more difficult now. It's a good thing that covid is now less virulent, the majority of people carry at least some degree of immunity and that treatments (at least in the US) are more readily available.
While most of us are partying, the vulnerable among us are under a lot of stress and more restricted in what they can do than before. No-one talks about the horror some on the plane must have felt when masks came off and people cheered. They could have waited until they landed and vulnerable people got the chance to remove themselves from the situation before allowing people to take their masks off. Out of sheer caring and courtesy.

Do what you like. Wear a mask if you believe it protects you. Just don't force everyone else to join in your belief system. And don't try to guilt people into it either. BTW, who are all these "vulnerable", and how did they manage before Covid, when colds and flu were about?

@@originalkk882 I see that question a lot (what did vulnerable people do pre-pandemic). On it's face it's a dumb question, as we all know the answer. We've lost loved ones to covid or know people who have. We know people who went to the hospital because of it. We have friends, colleagues and acquaintances who are suffering from long covid. The freaky part is, they are not dissimilar to ourselves. We wonder why it hit them and not us, or will it the next time we catch covid? Some of us won't admit that this is in the back of our minds, but it's there. And so we feel the need to ignore the problem. And in the process, we must make some people disappear.
What also makes us uncomfortable is that the situation we are in today, where we live in a world where covid is here to stay, was preventable. As a nation, we did not use the 2 months of warning we had to stock up on PPE. Once we had the PPE we refused to use it. Once we had the vaccines we refused to get vaccinated.
And so some people must disappear.

I wear a surgical mask tied at the cheeks for a tighter fit. I feel like I am being smothered when I wear a KN95 mask.

I do not mind wearing masks. Wearing a think mask (with a plastic support underneath) is very comfortable. It can protect me from dust, unwanted moist etc. Honestly I sometime wear masks to sleep in cold weather.

It is important to notice that we still don't know if surgical masks work to protect against being infected with covid (seems to be low in the studies) but also if the viral charge when infected is lower and that translate to less serious disease.
Masks are a cheap and easy to do measure, it is just a slight discomfort, and that is why generally is better to opt for the safer option and use masks. It is still something that need to be continually researched without any kind of stigma as long as the research is not done in malicious (designed from scratch to be more likely to show an intended result).
Of course, it is still important to be critical about it and not use it when it can affect the person more than usual (young children or people with mental health conditions) or when the discomfort highly increase (ie. Doing vigorous exercise).

I'll wait for medical staff to abandon masks in the operating theatre before I stop wearing mine.
    Masks ain't new:
1870 John Tindall, Director of the Royal Institution, advised that physicians wear 'cotton wool respirators' to combat contagion.
(Invented a better fireman's respirator, a hood that filtered smoke and noxious gas from air (1871, 1874)

That is primarily to reduce bacterial infection while the patient's body is cut open and vulnerable. Viruses are so much smaller than bacteria. It is why surgical patients are given antibiotics after surgery. It is for potential bacteria which can be stopped by masks. Look at the size of the pores in the masks compared with the size of viruses.

It is interesting how so many people are trying their best to convince themselves and others that masks are useless, most likely because they're tired of wearing them. Their attempts to make mask wearers feel foolish fall on deaf ears to those of us who realize that they do offer some protection (especially if everyone would wear them!) and that the next variant is just around the corner.
