In my own headcanon, Riley stuffs his neptune rocket full of ion cubes, ion power cells/batteries, etc. Then when he gets back to Alterra territory and is told he needs to pay off his debt, he negotiates by offering to trade cancellation of his debt for ion power technology and the schematics to fabricate them. I mean if the standard batteries that we get by default are the best Alterra has to offer in terms of power storage, those ion power sources and the schematics are gonna be worth a lot. Thus Riley is promoted to the Alterra Board for his brilliant discovery of ion power and he now lives like a king off of the royalties that he secured during negotiations.

I can definitely see him being a high ranking member of the expeditions back to the planet. If an astronaut crash landed on Mars, managed to survive and make it back to earth it definitely seems like they would be priceless. Then again alterra sounds horrific so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was just shot off into space to die dragonball style.
If we dive a bit into darker aspect of sci-fi corps, he could've been simply being imprisoned, interrogated for all the info by cruel methods and then simply killed to keep secrecy of new discovery.
Very random but i have bearly played any of subnautica aaand have bearly left the safe shallows but have watched so much of the lore and theorys and love all of it but am always to scared to play the game
It would be nice to see Riley in Below Zero or at least communicate with him or find one of his logs , in this way the story of both game will tie in together very well
@@Orion-uy6xz He did have a voice actor that was only given the role of a damage alert, as you hear his muffled screams whenever any injury occurs. Still that doesn't mean he isn't highly replaceable, and all they would have to do is find someone a few years older than the actor at the time of his recordings to create dialogue for Ryley Robinson.
I took care of that by bringing back a pile of ion cubes. Can you imagine how much value something like that, having it physically in hand even, would have to Alterra? I suspect that should cover my debt and then some XD

I have an alternate theory: As soon as he got the "pay or else" message from Alterra, he used the comms system of the Neptune rocket to contact the Mongolian Transgov that the Degasi (which actually have a prior claim to Alterra) originated from. Now the ONLY surviving expert on 4546B is supporting and providing information to another company. Bravo Alterra, your greed set you back.
My theory is the debt thing was just an automated message that the PDA plays when it returns to Alterra territory in emergency mode. Once an actual human being realizes that he's the survivor of their flagship's crash, they won't be imposing any sort of debt and will be begging to interview him.

in all honesty the information in Riley's PDA is more than enough to pay of his debt especially after discovering every scary ass leviathans, discovered most part or the gargantuan leviathans relic, met the sea emperor who has the ability to telepathically talk english to anyone she meets, discovered an island on a planet that has no island discovered, literally just discovered an atlantic part of the planet 1 seconds before he blast off to hyperdrive in space. and the other alien like fish and resources that has never been found in alterra and is also edibble. I know I'm late but here's my take, The whole purpose of the detour was to rescue the Degasi members, Alterra did this to better their relations with the Mongolian Transgov. Since Ryley found out what happened to the Degasi members (with PDA logs as proof) he could sell this highly valuable intel to Alterra and Alterra can use this intel to strengthen their relationship with the Mongolian Transgov by giving closure to the Torgal Mining Colony.
there is a 5th theory... maybe he exchanged his information about planet 4546B instead of paying the 1.000.000.000.000 credits and maybe also getting a higher rank because of the planets utilities

I like to believe that Riley became a remote advisor for the following Alterra Missions on the planet, since I didn‘t take him as an adventure-seeking type of guy like Robin. He just happend to crash unwillingly and just tried to survive. But I didn’t take him as an ambitious person either, so becoming a leading member of Alterra to me felt at odds both to his personality and his former position. But I do hope He got a happy Ending.

I think his debt was probably hand waved as a formality and was contacted by the Alterra board and was asked to be the head researcher in another expedition to the planet along with enough money to live well
So in my first playthrough, I was roleplaying pretty heavily. So just before launching my escape rocket I recalled the AI say something about my dept to Alterra for using the planet's resources. So I climbed back down and picked up all my ion cubes, ion batteries and ion cells and put them in the rocket storage. Now one might make the argument that the ion cubes themselves won't count as repayment as they were found on the planet, but the same cannot be said for the ion cells and batteries. That's something Riley invented. I find it perfectly reasonable that Riley would be smart enough to take all of the Ion equipment with him to act as repayment. (Or even act as means to a promotion for inventing such a phenomenal source of power)
My theory is that the main character immediately went back to 4546B after hearing of his colossal debt, spent a while weaponizing the Neptune, and took a lot of supplies from Alterra by force before heading back to 4546B and setting up a permanent residence there. Oh, also he separates the AI voice in his PDA from the rest of the AI.
I think Ryley Robinson had another Cuddlefish he brought with him on the rocket, and when Alterra saw the cute creature from space, they made a deal with Ryley for it because they knew they would get their money back by selling it’s eggs to persons wanting the Cuddlefish as a pet. Now, in the future, “thanks to Alterra”, every Habitat in the Ariadne Arm has an Alien Containment Facility and a Cuddlefish.
I like the theories that Ryley received promotions because of his discoveries, especially since it aligns with other aspects of the game's lore, such as the board director who was initially an engineer who managed to invent the Seamoth. Alterra may be scum, but they respect their valuable assets, and Ryley would, without a doubt, be a valuable asset to the company, since he knows more about the planet than anyone else, having survived on it himself. I also think that Ryley may have ultimately succumbed to after effects caused by kharaa having compromised his immune system, thus leading to another disease possibly killing him in the process.
Hopefully we get to see Ryley again. Because at the end of Subnautica, they were basically like: Ok you’re here! Now pay us money. What did Ryley do when he heard that? Did he turn tail and return to 4546B? Did he somehow find a way to pay Alterra the money? Is he in jail or his he deceased? Or did something else happen to him? We may never know.
I'm hopeful Ryley was able to profit from the discovery of of ion crystals and get promoted. Poor guy deserves a break after everything he went through.
I think Alterra let Ryley land because A. Why would they give him rocket blueprints B. This may be the PDA's fault, as it is probably design to not let people with "debt" to land, so Alterra gives permition to the PDA to let him land C. Ryley has a ton of information that Altera can use. There is also probably other reasons. Also I want a happy ending :)
A lot of these are debunked because the reason Riley has to scan things is because his pda is busted so it’s probable that it let him go there because it was busted and also they didn’t give him rocket blueprints he went on the rocket and found blueprints for the Neptune
Now I can imagine him appearing in below zero as the captain of a ship and him just turning around slowly saying “How was it?” Or “You enjoy the view?” Only to reveal his aged face
I figure the debt was so much, and that he wasn't allowed to land until he pays it back, so he goes back, turns back on the gun, and sends a loud "F**k you" radio signal to Alterra.
Or make the Ion Cube material only available to Alterra's competitors. If he stays, Riley might be the one who is assembles Al-An and is able to actually communicate with the Precursor
@@Totally_Bonkers At the end of the game, Riley has access to a rocket. The key is cracking the PDA to allow manual selection of the landing site (instead of being hardcoded to return to Alterra HQ)
My theory is a combination of 2 and 4 - in Alterra custody, on the planet. Minor spoilers for information from BZ ahead! BZ gives some info on how the Aurora crash was seen from Alterra space, and some of the info reveals that the planet is about a year away from the phasegate network, the fastest ships would still take nine months, and the Neptune was designed to just cut the journey short by months. It also said that Alterra was already sending another mission there. So, I'm theorising that after a few months on the Neptune, Ryley intercepts with the rescue / scout ships and is taken on board, and just gets sent straight back to the planet. Nothing he has on the planet can get rid of that debt. Alterra has claimed the planet, and that includes its contents, precursor tech included. It ALSO would include the enzyme 42 currently in the blood of the only known survivor of Kharaa... So, they go back to the planet. Ryley is kept alive for medical research and his knowledge of the planet, since Alterra plans to exploit it. He's probably on the Vesper as of BZ. (We DO know he'll be involved! Tom Jubert confirmed it months ago, and also that the Vesper wouldn't be so helpful, and the PDAs talking about the Aurora ingame now are named 'ency_ryley_1-5'. I strongly suspect Alterra will end up being the Big Bad, and Ryley either helps Robin or vice versa. Either way, damn you, Alterra, he's suffered enough!!)
This theory fits in better with business and corruption in Altera than any of the other theories. Altera would use that Debt to get everything they cold from Ryley, and the best way is to involve him with the research of the planethe just escaped.
I like to think he was unable to come up with the money and was outcasted by Alterra, but with his newfound survival skills and tools he just explores space as a "crazy" outcast until his final days.

I thought the most logical explanation was that the message about your debt was just an automated program in the PDA and that someone in Alterra HQ just did an override on it since they would probably make an exception for survival situations
I’m going to be honest with you, I never left the planet in the first place, I made the rocket and completed the game and everything but, why would I? I blame my Cuddlefish guilt tripping me and my unfinished base ideas lol (Just fyi Making the ghost leviathan observation base really wasn’t worth the trouble)

Probably already know this but if you let the cuddlefish out of the aquarium it'll follow you around everywhere (it's invulnerable as far as I know). You can also make it stay and play with it. It's really cute to be driving in your cyclops and look behind you with one of the cameras to see it following
In my opinion this is what happened. Since Alterra hadn't originally discovered Planet 4546B, when Ryley came back to Earth, the supplies he brought with him from the planet amounted to the amount he needed to pay and thus, he could retire comfortably or work as a researcher. But then he was so disturbed by how Alterra goes about with things that he just ran long and hard and never looked back. I wager he lives downtown somewhere, staying out of Alterra-related businesses and just watching what goes on from afar. Or maybe I'm wrong and like Marguerit Maida he's living in a hidden sector of the planet? I dunno but I included him in two fanfics I made. One was fully Subnautica based and another was a crossover of Subnautica and Ultraman. In both of them he was married, but its to who he was married to that differs.

Nope, they'd have claimed that all the information Riley collected already belongs to them because they own 4546B, as well as Riley's PDA, and the lifepod he escaped in, and the fabricator he used, and, and, and... you get the idea. They might pay him a bit for saving them the time to collect that information, but the info itself? Not gonna help Riley in the slightest.
In my head Canon Riley decided to never build the rocket and instead realized that he had everything he needed and that all that awaited him back home was more corporate hell and debt. If Robin went to the zone where Riley was stranded she'd find a massive comfortable base where an old man is taking care of and protecting Sea Emperors.
I hope Unknown makes another game continuing on what happened to Riley about how much he discovered and maybe he was appointed to the planet, Considering how Alterra probably owes Riley on how priceless the technology is
There's another possibility, he's encountered an unknown bacteria and has survived it. The medical research would be invaluable as well. That could also explain how it came to be in the other game you mentioned in a different video.

Idk I'm not too certain, in Below Zero, there's a few decorational items specific to his story, like a bed with lifepod 5, a bed with Ghost Levi in the Lost River, a poster of him and the Reaper at back of Aurora, and a poster of the PRAWN suit at the lava mountain with the Sea Dragon. I think lore-wise he had to have influenced the creation of those things somehow. Just my take :P

I don't know if he'd be on the board of directors. But I always figured the information he has on his scanner has got to be worth at least whatever he owes Altera. Can't see them passing up a chance to get their hands on that.
My personal theory for what happened to Ryle is that he traded information regarding the nature of 4546b to settle his debt, after all, we see posters in below zero where Alterra will pay people who discover and turn in information and discoveries of new technologies, therefore, it makes sense that Alterra would wipe away that debt in exchange for the information, ownership, and control over vast swathes of highly desirable tech.
I have a theory what if the mongolian federation helped him get of his debt, since the degasi was discovered by him they could help him as a gift or something
In my headcanon the player, Riley got back to alterra hq with all his precursor-Alterra infused tech and that alone, plus all of his pda data and the info on what happened to the degasi crew, payed off his debt and got promoted very quickly

If I was Riley I would have tried to make a deal: the information on the fate of the Aurora and the Degasi crew in exchange for the balance to be settled. Audio logs reveal that part of the reason the Aurora was even in that part of space was to find out what happened to the crew. Imagine the frustration of Alterra that their shiny new flagship was destroyed along with all the crew except for one man, all to find out what happened to 3 people.
It was easy: The reason the arctic bases were made was because Robinson told them everything and sent people for research. Why what i say is correct: The ship where Below Zero character came WASN'T shot down They came FOR RESEARCH and they RESEARCH Precursor bases(as shown in beginning) They said she can go home Whenever whe wants, something the Precursor lazer GUN wouldn't allow It's easy to guess it.
I feel like after collecting all those materials, building a rocket, and having tons of information about the planet Ryle might be able to sell all that
its actually very simple. They say it took around two months just to get to 4546B, that would leave a very large time gap where the Alterra executives thirst for Ryley's discoveries. Just give them the PDA. Almost any player would go ham on scanning alien lifeforms, and the most experienced would definitely have reapers and ghosts scanned and ready to be seen by the public. An entire continent of a huge and diverse planet would definitely outweigh any debt you had. And you recorded every detail of it.

If an astronaut crash landed on Mars, managed to survive and make it back to earth it definitely seems like they would be priceless. Very random but i have bearly played any of subnautica aaand have bearly left the safe shallows but have watched so much of the lore and theorys and love all of it but am always to scared to play the game

I have an alternate theory: As soon as he got the "pay or else" message from Alterra, he used the comms system of the Neptune rocket to contact the Mongolian Transgov that the Degasi (which actually have a prior claim to Alterra) originated from. My theory is the debt thing was just an automated message that the PDA plays when it returns to Alterra territory in emergency mode. Once an actual human being realizes that he's the survivor of their flagship's crash, they won't be imposing any sort of debt and will be begging to interview him.

I know I'm late but here's my take, The whole purpose of the detour was to rescue the Degasi members, Alterra did this to better their relations with the Mongolian Transgov. Since Ryley found out what happened to the Degasi members (with PDA logs as proof) he could sell this highly valuable intel to Alterra and Alterra can use this intel to strengthen their relationship with the Mongolian Transgov by giving closure to the Torgal Mining Colony.
Yeah that is a very fair point - though I guess same thing as with any of the new blueprints he found could apply :)

I like to believe that Riley became a remote advisor for the following Alterra Missions on the planet, since I didn‘t take him as an adventure-seeking type of guy like Robin. He just happend to crash unwillingly and just tried to survive. But I didn’t take him as an ambitious person either, so becoming a leading member of Alterra to me felt at odds both to his personality and his former position. But I do hope He got a happy Ending.

So in my first playthrough, I was roleplaying pretty heavily. So just before launching my escape rocket I recalled the AI say something about my dept to Alterra for using the planet's resources. So I climbed back down and picked up all my ion cubes, ion batteries and ion cells and put them in the rocket storage.
Now one might make the argument that the ion cubes themselves won't count as repayment as they were found on the planet, but the same cannot be said for the ion cells and batteries. That's something Riley invented. I find it perfectly reasonable that Riley would be smart enough to take all of the Ion equipment with him to act as repayment.
(Or even act as means to a promotion for inventing such a phenomenal source of power)

My theory is that the main character immediately went back to 4546B after hearing of his colossal debt, spent a while weaponizing the Neptune, and took a lot of supplies from Alterra by force before heading back to 4546B and setting up a permanent residence there.
Oh, also he separates the AI voice in his PDA from the rest of the AI.

I think Ryley Robinson had another Cuddlefish he brought with him on the rocket, and when Alterra saw the cute creature from space, they made a deal with Ryley for it because they knew they would get their money back by selling it’s eggs to persons wanting the Cuddlefish as a pet. Now, in the future, “thanks to Alterra”, every Habitat in the Ariadne Arm has an Alien Containment Facility and a Cuddlefish.

I like the theories that Ryley received promotions because of his discoveries, especially since it aligns with other aspects of the game's lore, such as the board director who was initially an engineer who managed to invent the Seamoth. Alterra may be scum, but they respect their valuable assets, and Ryley would, without a doubt, be a valuable asset to the company, since he knows more about the planet than anyone else, having survived on it himself. I also think that Ryley may have ultimately succumbed to after effects caused by kharaa having compromised his immune system, thus leading to another disease possibly killing him in the process.
I certainly hope he received a promotion :) He definitely deserves it.

I really hope we'll hear something about what happened to him in the future :)

A lot of these are debunked because the reason Riley has to scan things is because his pda is busted so it’s probable that it let him go there because it was busted and also they didn’t give him rocket blueprints he went on the rocket and found blueprints for the Neptune

My theory is a combination of 2 and 4 - in Alterra custody, on the planet. Minor spoilers for information from BZ ahead!
BZ gives some info on how the Aurora crash was seen from Alterra space, and some of the info reveals that the planet is about a year away from the phasegate network, the fastest ships would still take nine months, and the Neptune was designed to just cut the journey short by months. It also said that Alterra was already sending another mission there. So, I'm theorising that after a few months on the Neptune, Ryley intercepts with the rescue / scout ships and is taken on board, and just gets sent straight back to the planet.
Nothing he has on the planet can get rid of that debt. Alterra has claimed the planet, and that includes its contents, precursor tech included. It ALSO would include the enzyme 42 currently in the blood of the only known survivor of Kharaa...
So, they go back to the planet. Ryley is kept alive for medical research and his knowledge of the planet, since Alterra plans to exploit it. He's probably on the Vesper as of BZ.
(We DO know he'll be involved! Tom Jubert confirmed it months ago, and also that the Vesper wouldn't be so helpful, and the PDAs talking about the Aurora ingame now are named 'ency_ryley_1-5'. I strongly suspect Alterra will end up being the Big Bad, and Ryley either helps Robin or vice versa. Either way, damn you, Alterra, he's suffered enough!!)
That is actually a very interesting theory :) looking at the facts, you may very well be right!

This theory fits in better with business and corruption in Altera than any of the other theories. Altera would use that Debt to get everything they cold from Ryley, and the best way is to involve him with the research of the planethe just escaped.
I like to think he was unable to come up with the money and was outcasted by Alterra, but with his newfound survival skills and tools he just explores space as a "crazy" outcast until his final days.
Imagine him as a space pirate :)

I thought the most logical explanation was that the message about your debt was just an automated program in the PDA and that someone in Alterra HQ just did an override on it since they would probably make an exception for survival situations

Probably already know this but if you let the cuddlefish out of the aquarium it'll follow you around everywhere (it's invulnerable as far as I know). You can also make it stay and play with it.

In my opinion this is what happened.
Since Alterra hadn't originally discovered Planet 4546B, when Ryley came back to Earth, the supplies he brought with him from the planet amounted to the amount he needed to pay and thus, he could retire comfortably or work as a researcher.
But then he was so disturbed by how Alterra goes about with things that he just ran long and hard and never looked back. I wager he lives downtown somewhere, staying out of Alterra-related businesses and just watching what goes on from afar.
Or maybe I'm wrong and like Marguerit Maida he's living in a hidden sector of the planet?
I dunno but I included him in two fanfics I made. One was fully Subnautica based and another was a crossover of Subnautica and Ultraman. In both of them he was married, but its to who he was married to that differs.
Hopefully :) Then again, the supplies he brought caused the debt in the first place.

Nope, they'd have claimed that all the information Riley collected already belongs to them because they own 4546B, as well as Riley's PDA, and the lifepod he escaped in, and the fabricator he used, and, and, and... you get the idea. They might pay him a bit for saving them the time to collect that information, but the info itself? Not gonna help Riley in the slightest.

In my head Canon Riley decided to never build the rocket and instead realized that he had everything he needed and that all that awaited him back home was more corporate hell and debt. If Robin went to the zone where Riley was stranded she'd find a massive comfortable base where an old man is taking care of and protecting Sea Emperors.
Honestly staying on the planet sounds like a pretty good deal for Ryley at this point :)

There's another possibility, he's encountered an unknown bacteria and has survived it. The medical research would be invaluable as well. That could also explain how it came to be in the other game you mentioned in a different video.

Idk I'm not too certain, in Below Zero, there's a few decorational items specific to his story, like a bed with lifepod 5, a bed with Ghost Levi in the Lost River, a poster of him and the Reaper at back of Aurora, and a poster of the PRAWN suit at the lava mountain with the Sea Dragon. I think lore-wise he had to have influenced the creation of those things somehow.

Unlikely. Riley went back to Earth and we have no idea where Robin ended up after the end of Below Zero.
There should’ve been mention to Riley in Below Zero like Robin encounters a Warper or something and Sam says something like “Be careful, Riley reported about this and told us that they’re very dangerous”

My personal theory for what happened to Ryle is that he traded information regarding the nature of 4546b to settle his debt, after all, we see posters in below zero where Alterra will pay people who discover and turn in information and discoveries of new technologies, therefore, it makes sense that Alterra would wipe away that debt in exchange for the information, ownership, and control over vast swathes of highly desirable tech.

This is likely as they would now have a claim of the the planets in the system
it wasnt discovered by him, alterra knew about the degasi first and he never actually found the ship ingame.
So the pda log says the ship was scraped to build the bases in the map and also magritte is still alive and can says what happen

In my headcanon the player, Riley got back to alterra hq with all his precursor-Alterra infused tech and that alone, plus all of his pda data and the info on what happened to the degasi crew, payed off his debt and got promoted very quickly

If I was Riley I would have tried to make a deal: the information on the fate of the Aurora and the Degasi crew in exchange for the balance to be settled.
Audio logs reveal that part of the reason the Aurora was even in that part of space was to find out what happened to the crew. Imagine the frustration of Alterra that their shiny new flagship was destroyed along with all the crew except for one man, all to find out what happened to 3 people.

They came FOR RESEARCH and they RESEARCH Precursor bases(as shown in beginning)

its actually very simple. They say it took around two months just to get to 4546B, that would leave a very large time gap where the Alterra executives thirst for Ryley's discoveries. Just give them the PDA. Almost any player would go ham on scanning alien lifeforms, and the most experienced would definitely have reapers and ghosts scanned and ready to be seen by the public. An entire continent of a huge and diverse planet would definitely outweigh any debt you had. And you recorded every detail of it.
(note that the two months was an estimate / rumor i heard somewhere)
