Imagine if Subnautica had somewhat of a fire watch sort of experience. With a survivor far away from the player that you can never see, but always talk to on the radio. I feel like that would have been AMAZING
I honestly love this concept. It's one of those questions that really hooks you and makes you think. For me, personally, I have a few different thoughts on the matter. First off, I believe this begs the question of how we interact with this other character. Would they be in one place, giving us things to go out and do to progress? Or maybe be a direct companion that follows us to each location. Maybe we never see them at all, and we just get to contact them on the radio frequently. Second, I think this could lead to a FAR different story from the original. We could potentially see multiple different endings as well. Say we had some kind of relationship with this other person, prior to the beginning of the game. Or maybe we begin to develop one with them throughout the events unfolding. Hell, maybe if this person is just another voice on the radio, we might get to hear them slowly slipping into insanity from what's going on. As for the different endings, I think it might have to depend on who this other character is, and maybe even decisions we're allowed to make throughout the game. Say we build a lot of trust with this person, and they happen to be female. Ryley and his new friend might decide to not leave the planet at all, and start a new life there knowing the gun would protect them from alterra (who we know ain't about to let their debt just slide). Like this, the two could populate the planet further and start their own civilization. Here's another idea though- say we don't listen to this character throughout the game, and never gain their trust. Regardless of their gender, they might betray us and sabotage us in the final moments of the game. We could also receive a neutral ending, allowing both us and our partner to leave the planet. Nothing special, nothing terrible. Well whatever. It's always fun to think about these kinds of things, but I still think subnautica is nearly perfect for a game in it's genre. Just gotta say I love the videos man, you deserve way more support.
Yeah I totally agree :) there are so many different areas one could explore regarding this topic. I also love the idea of this NPC being someone you have to build a relationship with throughout the game!
Yeah we get no indication of what happened to those two who landed so close to Riley, had a mostly working Seaglide, yet somehow missed him entirely and disappeared.
Epic video! This is quite a interesting question. I do want to add one thing. At 2:00, I would assume that the reason the other 15 life pods are not in the game is because they ejected soon after abandon ship was called, causing them to land tens of hundreds of miles away from the Aurora crash site. So who knows. Maybe there are a couple of survivors who landed far from the playable area, landing on a other reef area.
The way I had viewed the one-sided interaction with Altera HQ, I suspect that due to how long it took for them to receive the distress call, they suspected nobody survived and had only sent out that message for the slim chance that there was. I wonder if they had confirmation that there was more than one survivor, perhaps they would have sent a blueprint for a vessel that could accommodate x amount of survivors
I think having a second survivor, but with whom you never interact with would be more interesting. You are never in the same area at the same time, but you see evidence of them all over the place. They would build multiple mini-bases all over the map, appearing over time, eventually in every biome. They would not be there when you first visit a zone, but appear at a later visit. Perhaps the other survivor comes to favor one or two bases, chosen at random, that they add to over time or story/exploration check points. Maybe that could be how you get Prawn suit fragments; the other survivor makes one, but it eventually breaks down at an outpost. Could be used to time-lock other tech recipes. This would help to maintain the isolated atmosphere the game gets so right, compared to Last Bacon's scenario where you interact with them.
this is a really cool concept. when I played for the first time, I received distress messages on my radio not a robot voice, but a person's voice. I rushed to the coordinates to try and rescue them, and was disappointed that I couldn't find them. As far as I know, Second Officer Keen and CTO Yu tried to go to the Aurora Rendezvous point, but didn't make it? oh you mentioned it in the video. Maybe these 2 survivors tried to go to the aurora and died of radiation sickness, or a reaper?
what about the 2 people who were in the kelp forest? they were very close to ryley, and they had a seaglide. if one of them made it, they could easily find ryley's intact lifepod.
Do you think unknown world would be fine if I made a fan comic like this? Because I'm hoping that they're fine with me making that a fan comic like that.
*Insert drake meme but instead of drake its Ryley* *Escape the horrible place?* *Nah fam* *Kill everything and infest the planet like your own planet* *YES FAM*
I just got to say I love your content. The mod videos are funny the theory videos are interesting and the creepy pastas are...creepy you got me back into subnatica. Keep making great content
I had an idea: town npcs. Every single life pod emergency signal you get, you end up with a timer, you get to them in time; you get jochi khasar, second officer keen, Ozzy.
If they had a fully functional PDA and someone with engineering knowledge. They might be able to repair the Ship before the big boom. We get a warning the explosion is going to happen, so they could make two radiation suits and get the drive core repaired before the ship explodes.
1. The crew quarters were in the back half of the ship near the bridge so the engineering section was blown in half and we are only seeing one half of it. 2. CTO Yu made her assessment on fixing the comms before the main character awakes from the crash. Which in itself is well before the ship explodes from the drive core failure. In conclusion I highly doubt the long range comms were fixable by the time we could arrive at the aurora.
Am i the only one who thinks that a dlc about the sunbeam survivors (if there is any) would be a great addition to the subnautica lore Edit:this will be a good dlc too
about the rocket problem, the blueprint was sent by alterra on ryley's request, thus it was for only 1 survivor. If they tell them that there are 2 of them then alterra would probably give an approproate blueprint
I love this entire channel but i also love that you reply to comments:) also all of your work dont pay of enough you deserve more .you are my favorite youtuber
I'd like to think that the second survivor would be an average communications personel with an extreme passion in xenobiology as a side hobby, they unfortunately landed atop a kelp forest but with their aptitude and cautious curiosity of xenobiology, they would probably be wise enough to know how to deal with the stalkers and would quickly adapt to the environment whilst in the meantime regularly sending distress signals and keeping tabs on other survivor's coordinates for later exploration in which they and Ryley can collaborate on. They would probably have their PDA and fabricator broken, forcing them to create their own data and analysis on the local flora and fauna and write them down on a sketch book that they bring all the time everywhere, they can also sustain themselves by drying the big kelp leaves on top of the lifepod to turn to fuel and using blank pages of the sketch book for tinder for the making of fire and cooking meals, their adept experience of biology in general also grants them sufficient insight on which parts of an alien species are the most nutritious and they also turn out to be those kinds of people that prefer to eat the "primitive" way instead of indulging in synthetic edibles, anyways this is getting long but those are just some ideas atop of my head
I imagine a group of four survivors (including Ryley in that count) could make it. It’s true that many other survivors were able to escape the Aurora before the crash, but there’s a communications message that is from a Warper that says they were able to neutralize many infected targets so that may explain why there are less survivors. However, we can probably speculate that there is probably three other survivors that were able to make it. Purely speculation without evidence, but it’s a nice thought.
I've been thinking about this exact question on and off for over a year now. Though it was mostly because of a different, and less plausible, question I thought of as soon as I started playing the early access version of Below Zero: What if Robin had been part of the Aurora crew? Not that I'm wishing for her to replace Ryley as the main character of the first game, but more like what if she and Ryley worked as a team? Also leads to what if Ryley appeared in Below Zero somehow?
Great vid, but one thing is that Riley would not have been able to communicate with other survivors because if you look at the systems in your life pod above the storage box even after the pod is repaired it says outwards comms are offline. But keep up the great vids
Now that you mention it, would be a nice turn of events imagine some kind of cooperation between NPC's something like Dragon Age, to build a base with all the other survivors as you gather them around the map.
When those 2 were still alive, and suggested to try repairing long range comms, Aurora hadnt exploded in a quantum detonation yet, Riley was unconcious for a few days, cause once he wakes up they are all already dead. So i think if they had survived the trip from the island to the ship they could have been able to stop the detonation by estabilizing the reactor. Anyway you can try the multiplayer and see how different it is maybe even make a video about it.
When i first got the beacon for ‘aurora rendezvous point’, i thought i would actually meet up with other survivors. I ended up getting marble melons instead
@@TheLastBacon So I've got an idea. What if aurora landed on another island (like the ones we see at the end of the game, which are bigger than the main game islands)
I feel like if there was another survivor to be with Riley that possibly we could have had branching paths with the story causing different endings example: Riley meets new survivor, Riley and Survivor work hard to fix the aurora, the nuclear explosion is about to happen in 5 hours, room gets caved in, the survivor got trapped inside(if you don’t have laser cutter) explosion kills the other survivor.
What if someone else was in the lifpod with robin? they would be able to repair things faster - receive distress calls faster and save some of the others from their inevitble warper or reaper deaths. Snowballing through the process and multitudes faster than solo given the vast knowledge we are shown some of the initial survivors have. they can split and blast the game in a crazy short amount of time. saving more of the local fauna saving the sunbeam whom could rescue them. its really crazy to think about how 10-15 more people would live if someone else was in rileys pod
You should’ve done something with who Riley was most likely to run into alive, which life pod could have survived for long enough for Riley to get to them. Great video though!
A second surviver could even go into a darker direction. Remember, one of the symptoms of the virus is increased aggression, which could cause conflict between the 2 characters, maybe even forcing the player to kill the other surviver.
You’ve proved yourself a decisive man, so I don’t expect you’ll have any trouble deciding what to do. If you’re interested, just step into the portal and I will take that as a yes.
Also note that they could use the two-crewed vehicles too! Ryley was only limited to the cyclops, seamoth and prawn suit as they are the only vehicles that could be crewed by one person. There might be about 5 other vehicles possible to crew with two.
I think it could have been a super cool different way for the game to go if Yu and Keen eventually find Rylee and they all work together to reactivate the comma system and disable the quarantine enforcement.
I'm just imagining Riley waking up and leaving his pod to see someone has set up a small base right in front of his Lifepod "Oh hey, you're finally awake!"
With mods this can come true. Me and a tech savvy family member tried it. There was strange things like the pod being offset to be closer to the mountains than the crash site, some life pod signals being activated from the start, a signal where the spawn pod should be. Oh and instant aurora explosion on spawn. Note we didn’t make the mod we used the nexus mod loader for this
I think if there where multiple survivors, from a gameplay standpoint we would have a much bigger map. Maybe a map big enough to support more giant leviathan creatures, this maybe would’ve caused the scrapped creatures to officially exist in the game. I think having 2 or more people would make the “mid-game” section easier, but the “end-game” section a *lot* more difficult.
Has everyone forgotten "Marguerit Maida"? She may be somewhere else on planet 4546B, but "Ryley Robinson" isn't the only Homo sapiens there. "Long range transmission back to Alterra HQ"? That's Neebs Gamings' "Technical Support from Hell" version of "Subnautica"! Depending on the sex of "the other survivor," this game would descend into "Die Hard on Planet 4546B" (The John and Holly Show) or "Gay Times in the Tropics." (More than one survivor? Hmm, "Three's Company" comes to mind.)
I wrote a whole-ass novel-length fic based on the premise of more survivors, haha. (It's called Controlled Descent, on AO3.) Has more survivors on the Aurora, who are then able to stablise the ship and send out a rescue for those in the lifepods, which leads to a very different dynamic between those exposed to Kharaa and those who never had been. But yeah, definitely agree that Yu and Keen would have survived if they hadn't left for the Aurora. I feel Yu was probably desperate at that point - she had likely seen Berkeley die right in front of her (given that he was definitely present in the lifepod but not on the island, and that Northern Blood Kelp Zone is one of the most dangerous non-Reaper territories on the map!), she NEEDS to find more survivors. With a bit more time and planning, they could have made it and been able to repair the comms, especially with Ryley's near superhuman survival skills!
@@TheLastBacon yup, here! archiveofourown.org/works/18492490/chapters/43819969 Focuses a lot more on the relationships between the characters (since they actually are, well, alive), as well as the social politics that develop onboard between those who are being quarantined due to exposure and those who aren't.

That is a very fair point :) ....or they're just forever drifting in the void.

Oh yeah probably :) I'm sure they have other vehicles similar to the Neptune rocket.

That would be kinda spooky in a way :)
that would just make it more scary lol
Or even contacting you at the end of the game because who cant notice a frickin rocket?! And escape together (or before you even build the rocket)
this is a really cool concept. when I played for the first time, I received distress messages on my radio not a robot voice, but a person's voice. I rushed to the coordinates to try and rescue them, and was disappointed that I couldn't find them. As far as I know, Second Officer Keen and CTO Yu tried to go to the Aurora Rendezvous point, but didn't make it? oh you mentioned it in the video. 1. The crew quarters were in the back half of the ship near the bridge so the engineering section was blown in half and we are only seeing one half of it.
2. CTO Yu made her assessment on fixing the comms before the main character awakes from the crash. Which in itself is well before the ship explodes from the drive core failure.
In conclusion I highly doubt the long range comms were fixable by the time we could arrive at the aurora.

if Riley wasn't the only survivor the other survivor would probably betray him and take his rocket and leave him with the reapers
Dang that would really suck :)
But why?
@@jacarebovino3366 it's entirely possible that he did make enemies
Honestly, this would work as a great set-up for a two player mode for the game.
Yep, totally! :)
Love the idea! That could actually be so cool! :)
Would be a nice thought for sure :)
Honestly I would love to either see or at least hear about Ryley in BZ :)

Great vid, but one thing is that Riley would not have been able to communicate with other survivors because if you look at the systems in your life pod above the storage box even after the pod is repaired it says outwards comms are offline. But keep up the great vids
Yeah fair enough :) They'd probably have to physically meet.
Plot twist: there was a second survivor but they were always in different places at different times never meeting each other the entire time
That would be so unfortunate :D

Lol wonder what it was doing :)
I love these theories
Hope you enjoy! :)
Real question though is if the survivor was a girl they could have a whole new civilization
I guess they could if they survived kharaa :)
Now that you mention it, would be a nice turn of events imagine some kind of cooperation between NPC's something like Dragon Age, to build a base with all the other survivors as you gather them around the map.
Would certainly be interesting :)
Yeah that is a very fair point :) perhaps they could even stop the first explosion!
I'm going to wait for vid to end to comment. Wait

1st

no one is ever first
That is very fast for sure :)
Yeah that sounds awesome :)
Yeah absolutely :)....the whole thing could’ve gone very differently.
You should’ve done something with who Riley was most likely to run into alive, which life pod could have survived for long enough for Riley to get to them. Great video though!
Thank you! Good question though, I'm thinking probably Yu :)
A second surviver could even go into a darker direction. Remember, one of the symptoms of the virus is increased aggression, which could cause conflict between the 2 characters, maybe even forcing the player to kill the other surviver.
Ooh good point! :)
You’ve proved yourself a decisive man, so I don’t expect you’ll have any trouble deciding what to do. If you’re interested, just step into the portal and I will take that as a yes.
He sure has :)
Also note that they could use the two-crewed vehicles too! Ryley was only limited to the cyclops, seamoth and prawn suit as they are the only vehicles that could be crewed by one person. There might be about 5 other vehicles possible to crew with two.
Fair point :)
I think it could have been a super cool different way for the game to go if Yu and Keen eventually find Rylee and they all work together to reactivate the comma system and disable the quarantine enforcement.
Yep totally agree :) Imagine that as an "alternate story" dlc!

With mods this can come true. Me and a tech savvy family member tried it. There was strange things like the pod being offset to be closer to the mountains than the crash site, some life pod signals being activated from the start, a signal where the spawn pod should be. Oh and instant aurora explosion on spawn. Note we didn’t make the mod we used the nexus mod loader for this
Did you use the Nitrox mod? :)
@@TheLastBacon yes actually I knew I got the name wrong :/
I think if there where multiple survivors, from a gameplay standpoint we would have a much bigger map.
Maybe a map big enough to support more giant leviathan creatures, this maybe would’ve caused the scrapped creatures to officially exist in the game.
I think having 2 or more people would make the “mid-game” section easier, but the “end-game” section a *lot* more difficult.
Yeah I think that’s a good way to balance out the game :)
Yeah I didn't want to talk about Maida since it kinda spoils BZ :)
Dang is the novel out somewhere? :O
