    This is a great video. Exactly what I needed to know (specially if drilling was a common practice).
    Each vehicle model is different, therefore the wiring points will differ.

    Excellent attention to the technical details (amps demanded, wire size). Many thanks.

    I want to install a roof light bar, but I don't want to drill into my roof so there isn't and leaks when it rains or snows. You briefly mentioned door brackets, would that risk leaks or would it be perfectly fine? I have a 2005 Ford F-150 if that helps.

    This is a dumb question, but the two led lights I bought came with about 50mm of unsheathed ends where they will connect to the harness which will also have another 50mm of unsheathed wiring. I plan to solder and heat shrink them together but what's the best way to "protect" or sheath the 100mm of wire that doesn't have sheathing? I'm not sure what product to use. Would some split loom with a ton of electrical tape suffice? I may have to do something similar to extend the other end of the harness to get it to the rear door of my pajero before it enters back into the cab 🤔

    Not exactly helpful for how to wire. Yes, we know it might be illegal; yes, we know where to mount them, but the only tricky part is how to wire the lights. Any chance of making THAT video?

    I put 2 driving lights on side and 2 2 pencil beam on center,
    2 driving lights is turn on by switch while 2 pencil beam is turn on by high beam switch
    still plan to put 4 more lights on custom front bumper
    wiring is drill a hole into the roof,
    because mounting also bolted onto the roof and sealed it

    I want to mount 6 led lights on my 2008 tacoma. Total watts of the lights add up to 396 I'm using two wiring kits each with 40amp relays. Do you think it will be ok to run on arock battery and alternator with no problem ?

    do you have a video on how to actually wire off road lights into your high beams? i cant seem to find one on youtube anywhere :(

    • @Eaglefreek300
      @Eaglefreek300 9 років тому +2

      You may have found this out already, but just in case anyone else is curious. On a 12v automotive relay there are 4 or 5 pins. We will just take about the 4 pins 30, 85, 86 and 87. You run a fused power wire from the battery to pin 30, then run the power wires to the lights to pin 87. You'll have to safely tap into a wire going to your highbeams that is energized only when the highbeams are turned on and then run that wire to pin 86. Run a ground through a switch in the interior of the vehicle and then hook that to pin 85. This way you can turn the off road lights off and use the highbeams by themselves. Some vehicles switch the headlights with the negative wire. If so, you will have to run that wire to 86 and run 12v+ through a switch and then to 85. I hope that's not too confusing.

    @DevinL16 a relay is a remote switch. Your high beam triggers the relay to close and connect the lights to the battery.

    In Queensland you are only allowed four facing forward lights, your two normal headlights and two spotlights.Not including your light bar.

    your 4X4, i got a pair of narva maxim 150 spotlight and wired it up to the diagram it came with. i checked that i had it hooked up to high beam and power and all connections. i event looked at the globes to make sure there were good. everything okay hooked up the battery and they didnt work. i also didnt use the switch it came with because there wasnt enough wire for it. any suggestions as to what it could be.
    p.s its for a bulbar on a 98 pajero

  • @florixtw

    lumen is the total amount of visible light produced. essentially the more you have the more light you produce. The beam is the lens around the light, so if you want it straight out (pencil), far with a bit of spread (spot) and lots of spread (flood)

    I live in south Australia and I've been told by people around the place that you can have lights on your roof but you can't use them on the roads, and that You can Only use them out on the tracks or on private property. Is this true? I havnt been able to find out that through looking at legalities.

      Mitch ismyname - Not being a smart alec here, but it might be that you missed that. He covered that in the video. Unless you're asking how to actually connect into that circuit. Then you go through the fuze box or circuit box.
      Find the power for the lights, trace it to the switch and connect to the high beam side just as he said, with the relays.

  • @no1aussiepaul
    @no1aussiepaul 11 років тому

    An example of why you use a relay.
    If you run your wiring from your low/high indicator stalk, the contact switch is only rated high enough to to handle the power for standard lights and will heat up if the current draw is too high. Same for modern cars where relays are switched instead, You need to at least get higher rated relay and wiring.

    need me some light force light's, i have 4 kc's on my cherokee's roof rack and they work great! and i dont like the idea of running the light cable's through the door...it looks tacky i just drilled a hole under the stock rack rails and ran them into the truck then sealed it off.

  • @IronMessenger

    Who calls slamming the wires in the door like a teenager too eager to get the project done on the cheap, "an expert" way to run power wires? I get that this does not drill bodywork... but it also chances the wires breaking down and shorting to the truck, and often messes us the factory door seals too. Sigh...

    Yes I have designed and built a number of custom lights, my comment was in response too " when some asustart cuts you off? " :) .
    My absolute pet hate is the wanker's with Fog lights that are NOT true fog lights that cut off not more than 18" off the ground! Most I have seen are nothing more than a bear bulb in a reflector with NO active focusing at all.

    There are several Rules and Laws that MUST be obeyed for Auxiliary Lighting
    1 No Auxiliary lighting may be mounted higher 1.2 Meters AGL
    2 No Auxiliary lighting may be mounted greater than 150 mm above OEM lighting
    3 Lights fitted for Off road use Must
    A. If fitted to the Roof rack be made NON operational unless in 4WD Low Range
    B. Must be covered with an opaque Cover at ALL times whilst on the Highway.
    4 Auxiliary lighting be made to operate via Hi-Beam controlled relays ONLY.

    How is mounting spotlights on the bumper more effective than on the roof? Spotlights are meant for seeing at a distance, the higher you mount them, the farther they can reach. A spotlight mounted waist-high on a bumper isn't going to show you anything your regular headlights can't show you. This guy is an expert?

  • @TinManisbugginout

    Allen, I'm truly confused. You stated to ensure that the roof lights are wired to the high beams for legal purposes.
    I'm going to make an ass of myself and make an assumption: you are not in the United States, right? That is not meant to sound derogatory or disrespectful. I'm going solely on your accent.
    That leads me into the next and confusing point. My US sold Chrysler products (a van and a ram pickup) both have factory fog lights installed. Both are wired to the dim switch. When I hit the brights they turn off. Is that a difference in nations, or did you possibly mean the other way on the connections, or are my vehicles factory wired incorrectly maybe???
    So you can see my confusion here, yes?

    • @znovosad555
      @znovosad555 7 років тому

      That's a United States law. You can't have more than 4 front facing lights on at once. All cars with factory fog lights have that. So you're high beams would be considered 6 lights with fog lights on.

    • @TinManisbugginout
      @TinManisbugginout 7 років тому

  • @davidathomas42

    That was a waste of time. That's not how to wire anything up. Legal talk. Who cares. High beam. No I want a separate switch so I decide when they are on. Running wires up the door seam is just slack. All after market fits should look OEM.
    Poor video.

  • @BadLuqq

    If I paid somebody to install lights for me (which I wouldn't, I'm a sparky so I've got more than enough knowledge to wire a simple lighting circuit), and they gave it back to me with the cable running up through the door like that, I sure as fuck wouldn't give them a cent. That's dodgy as. i'm surprised a "professional" company would even do that on something like this which is a form of advertising. I'll never be going to Piranha Offroad...
