I drove a "dually" from Seattle to Detroit. Picked up a 5th wheel extended camper trailer and drove back. It was for a friend. A dually pulling a 5th wheel on the freeway is a nice experience - what the dually was made for. But NEVER mistake an empty one for a sports car - they bite back. This build, while few parts, shows off a dually in the best possible light. Thanks for all the time and talent you invest in each build. See ya next time!
Now if we can just get Round2 to marry this cab with the short box and come up with a chassis as a 4 wheel drive! I think they called them Z71s. Nice build Chris!
The dashboard is correct for a '95-96, the '97-2000 is different on the passenger side, having the compartment for the airbag or storage cubby on the HD 2500 and all 3500s. Hopefully the aftermarket will make one of these....I love the decals for the details on the dashboard though! Great idea Round 2!
I totally agree with you about the fifth wheel camper kits. There would be lines of guys waiting to get their hands on a few of those and I would be one of them!!
I’ve got two of these on pre-order and a few of the old Galaxy trailers I’m going to use them with. I use to own a 1/1 dually of this era but mine was a crew cab. Thanks Chris
Very nice build of a nice simple kit. The kit looks like a nice kit. I just really wish it was a full kit. Meaning it had an engine, separate exhaust, rear end and front suspension. This kit helps our problem with not having a modern truck, but we still need a modern truck. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Cool! I left a comment on Round 2's channel that they should do a regular cab, longbed 2500. Tool up the WT single headlight grille and 8 lug steel wheels. They could even do a rear liftgate and include a Coke machine for their Coca Cola license.
Looks great! Would love to see a flat bed tow truck body on this, and I think Round 2 should also consider bringing back the Dodge Ram V10 2500, possibly upgrading that to a 3500 dualie.
I'm going to ask a question because I'd like to know how you, a well versed model builder, feels about what we are seeing in the hobby right now.... We are ALL aware that prices can't realistically stay the same on kits BUT, how can a company justify higher prices for kits containing less? There have been so many excellent kits released lately but alot of them are curbside/easy build. How do you feel about having to pay full kit prices for kits thst don't contain full kit parts? I know they offer a provision to add an engine after the fact but, the fact is, it's still a kit that will never be what a full detail kit can be. I love this hobby and I can tell by your work, you do too. I hope this hits the right way because I'm not looking to cause a problem. Im just a fellow builder that's getting a little miffed with where portions of the hobby are heading.
I’d make it as a brush firetruck or somehow extend it a little and pop an ambulance body on it. Possibilities would be endless for me being a firetruck modeler and builder lol
Years ago I can remember there being a resin version available, they offered both the 88-93 and 94-98 options, plus the sealed beam work truck. I can't remember the name though.
you said something about a fifth wheel hitch for the dually---I just got one for my Moeibus 3/4 ton two wheel drive Ford---it is form a company called VCG Resins by Reese---have ordered a bunch of stuff from him and very well pleased with the quality and service---just thought I would give him a plug---am not getting paid for this advertisement---
Man, I just gotta say, I love your channel. That music you put in the paint portion of the video is great, too. Good lookin ol chevy, which to me still looks like a new chevy, lol.thank you for what you do, it makes my day better, more than you probably would ever think. Until next time, Sir.........
Just got this as an early Birthday gift gonna need some acrylic spray paint and Gold acrylic pens I’m a newbie at this stuff but I have confidence I can complete it
Looks great! One tip - draw around the thickness of the headlight lenses with a black Sharpie to represent the gasket or airgap there usually is around headlights. In this era I'd also use superglue for the turn signals and Micro Crystal Clear or white glue for the headlights - the clear/white signal lenses were always a bit more cloudy than the headlight lenses, even brand new.
Looks good Holmes 👍👍, keep on rocking it! Heck yeah, any of those engines, i seen someone makes a resin 1/25 GM Duramax Diesel, man that would be cool in one of those! Oooo-weee, i think that's Iceman collections that has the Duramax, hmmm 🤔💡
just noticed note the converter is behind the muffler not complaining just calling attention also glad to see I am not the only one who has trouble with the small parts trying to run away from me
Yes , I noticed that too! That's something that the original issue of this kit had(I looked at mine to be sure!) and I can't believe, as nice as the rest of it is, that this got by the QC. Catalytic converter always goes ahead of the muffler, not behind it! Other than that, it's a really nice kit! I love that they did the instrument cluster and the center stack with radio and HVAC switches as decals. And the more accurate grille, side mirrors, and lights are welcome additions! That said, I have owned 3 of this era GMT 400(the GM internal designation for this platform, and what the major forum for them is called) and so I have plenty of research material on hand. The dashboard around the instrument cluster and the center stack should be semigloss black, it's actually a VERY dark semi gloss gray. The steering wheel and column are also this color, on all the interior colors. Those are red, blue, tan and gray(the gray is also called "neutral", and is very hard to match! I tried to paint a repair on a cracked dashboard on my Suburban, that's how I know! Careful perusal of military colors may yield better matches; I was trying to mix a color and it didn't work so well. The tan is close to beige, it's much lighter than khaki. The phantom dually that came out back in the mid 90s had those decals you're talking about, and a tonneau cover too. It also had the GMC style grille, which is the only way to get that piece. The extended cab long bed kit(the teal green snapfast one) had the early (88-93) Chevy grille and interior, and the solid (no windows) camper shell. The Sportside kit had full details under the hood and chassis, as did the 88,89, and 90 annual kits of the long bed regular cab. They all had the TBI 5.0/5.7 small block engine; to get the TBI 7.4 big block, you had to get the 454SS kit. This was the only way to get the short bed fleetside. I liked these kits and had many of them, kitbashed a few to create replicas of friends' trucks. I'm quite happy to see versions of them back out, and hopefully the aftermarket can supply some of the conversion pieces that AMT hasn't made. I agree that a trailer, standard Class 3/4 trailer hitch (frame mounted under the rear bumper) and a fifth wheel/gooseneck hitch would be good parts to accessorize these with! Also running boards or step loops; stock height one tons are tall even in 2wd! The wheel center caps would be semigloss black on the Cheyenne or Scottsdale trim levels, and chrome on the Silverado. The lug nut covers are black plastic on either cap. Those covers thread onto the lug nuts and are what holds the covers onto the wheels. All in all, a nice kit for the most part, and I enjoyed watching this build video! It answered some questions about the kit and its updates too. Thanks!
Been waiting for OBS Gm dually model kit for.while since pro street Chevy dually kit in mid 90s interesting new 96 Chevy 3500 model kit doesn't have motor guess u choose own engine from part's box or stash 😮
Great build know what the fenders were made. From farmed with one spring has sprung I wonder how your cycle is looking forward on your new motorcycle video hope soon now have to buy motors for new builds thanks good job on all builds enjoy all
Is there anykind of detailing or customizing set out there at the moment for this particular kit? One that would include an engine/transmission, separate frame, axles etc…?
The long bed from the vintage 88-89-90 kits would fit, or the one from the extended cab long bed(the green one that was in this snapfast line). You'd just have to use different wheels and tires for the SRW trucks, but the ones from the kits I mentioned are all from half ton trucks so they're 5 lug wheels and not 8 lug like a 3500 or HD2500 would have.
Another painting hint that I forgot about yesterday; the cowl area between the back of the hood and the front of the windshield is made of black plastic, so should be painted semigloss black. The wiper arms and blades should also be semigloss black. I was looking at my vintage '96 dually and I'm amazed by the details of this model. The new retool looks even better! Since I have a '97 Chevy Silverado C3500 crew cab long bed in my driveway, I've got 21' of reference material! The bucket seats and console in this kit replicate the bucket seats option; these look more like the deluxe leather upholstery.
Really hoping they make a crew cab dually version. Also planning to kitbash this for the dash and use it on the regular cab, short bed kit. I have a 96 I want to replicate. Will just need to find a GMC grill.
@@hpiguy Thanks for the response. One more question. How long do you wait between primer and color coats on smaller parts like interior engine and interiors ? Thanks.
@@phantom629 yup good catch! That was a mistake on the original issue, and obviously wasn't corrected on the new kit. I guess I need to slide under my '97 Chevy crew cab long bed and take some pictures, and send them to AMT/Round 2.....
Chris: Have you heard of any modeler that was able to "mate" this kit with the AMT camper kit ? I know that AMT probably meant for the camper shell to go with the '72 Chevy pick-up, but it seems thia kit's longer dually wheelbase would be perfect for the camper.
I would have used a hair dryer to soften up the stiff wheels before trying to get them on the hubs. I'm sure the colder weather in the US wouldn't have helped.
Nice build up, Chris ! I'm in love with that *Cobalt* *Green* paint ; excellent choice ! (What kit is that other steering wheel and column from ? 10 minute marque)
another great one. think (am not 100% sure)that this may be a reissue??? seem to maybe have one in my built stash(they are currently in storage until the work room is finished) pretty sure it was issued as a "pro street" version because I remember I took the dually box from one of them and used it on one of the standard cab long wheel base kits either way its good to have it back
It's a reissue. I had the stock dually. I think it came in dark red plastic with the stock dually wheels. They also did the pro street version with huge slicks.
Yes the "phantom dually" had the GMC grille and big pro street rear tires on huge billet wheels. The stock '96 Chevy Silverado dually was a snapfast kit and was molded in burgundy for the body. Interior was molded in gray, while the side mirrors, steering wheel and column, and instrument cluster were molded in a softer black plastic. I got one of these last fall from a buddy (along with a couple of incomplete phantom duallies) and was looking at it closely after watching the video for the new version. These were nice kits for their time!
