  • Today on the WorkBench, I am building this Coca-Cola sponsored 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne Fleetside Pickup by AMT. This was a build that I started before my surgery last month and I finally finished it today. The build was fun and interesting because I don’t build that many pickup trucks.
    The paint is Krylon Red Pepper and Krylon Gloss White. The truck itself was molded in red plastic and that made getting the white paint white all that more difficult. I tried a new way to cover the red plastic based on advice given in a few forums that I had visited. A lot of guys suggested using Kilz or Zinsser white primer to “seal” the red from bleeding through. I’m here to tell you that it does not work and was a tremendous waste of time and money. In the end, I laid down two coats of my go to gray primer and it did the job with zero bleed through of the red.
    The decals were an entire nightmare all on their own. Every single one of them, with a few exceptions, crumbled upon exiting the water bowl. The tail gate name plate and the two license plate were the only ones that remained intact.
    Other than those few issues that I have mentioned the kit was a blast to put together. If you like this era of Chevy trucks, I suggest that you pick one of these up and build it.
    I hope that you enjoyed watching this video as much as I did building the kit. Any Comments or questions? Please leave them in the box below.

    You did awesome. I don’t care for the Coca-Cola paint scheme but you rocked it. A+++

    You know that piece of lost plastic is sitting there, watching you, and laughing. Nice build of this one. Shame about the decals, but it still looks nice.

      Thank You! You're probably right about that clear piece for the Coke machine. I set it aside for safe keeping and it ended up being so "safe" that it has become safe for eternity, LOL! I was looking forward to building this one just like the box art but the decals just crumbled as soon as they began to move on the paper. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks again! This truck was fun to get the white paint to be white though it was being applied over the red plastic. Somehow I pulled that off nicely.

    Nice job came out really really well .. absolutely love the machines. I'm gotta love vintage items. I might run up to hobby lobby and grab that kit on the 40% off

      Thank you! These are nice kits to build. I have another just like this one, as well as two ramp trucks. Waiting for the 40% off sale is the best way to get new kits at a lower price. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks! It's a shame that the decals were totally uncooperative, or this would have been an epic build! Thanks for watching!

    Came out incredible, the primer did a great job of hiding the red molded plastic for your white panels. Decals can be tough when they are long and thin. Nice Coke machine and accessories.👍

      Thank You! I thought that using that "sealer" would make painting the white paint easier. All it ended up doing was adding more work for me as I had to strip it off and start all over again. The gray primer is my go to primer for everything and I should have just trusted my gut feeling about it and saved my money and time. I was having trouble with all of the decals, large and small. The only ones that came off the paper in one piece were the license plates. All in all the truck did turn out pretty nice, so I can't complain about that!

      @@scaleautoguysworkbench I use that Zinsster product on ceiling tiles, to hide water leaks coming from roof. It works great in that application, covering stains.

      @rayrussell6258 There was about 4, maybe 5 different forums that I searched, and there were guys in those who swore by this stuff. Apparently, they had never actually tried it and were parroting what others were saying. I'm sure that this works very well for its intended purpose but certainly not for red styrene coverage.

    Nice kit. Yes the red plastic bit me on my 4 door conversion of the AMT fire chief car. Hopefully that primer will work.

      I posted on my Facebook page a while back how I felt about red plastic. I wish that these kit manufacturers would stop using red, yellow and orange plastic altogether. Those colors are hard to cover especially with a lighter color of paint. That white Zinsser "sealer" was pink almost immediately after being applied. I even tried a second coat with zero luck. Then I tried silver over that and then the gloss white. The pink was showing by the next morning. After stripping all of that off I went to my ole standby gray primer. Two coats of that followed by two coats of the gloss white. So far, the gray primer has held the red color from showing through. It has been about ten days since the paint was completed and it is still white. Thanks for watching!

    I almost picked up this kit at Walmart, wish I did.
    The only thing I'm not liking are the headlights and taillights. Headlights need clear covers so they don't look like chrome (AMT should have provided that), and the taillights are supposed to have back-up lamps above the taillights, all of that combo surrounded by chrome trim.

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  11 місяців тому

      Usually I put a coating of Mod Podge over the headlights to dull down the chrome a bit and give it a touch of realism, I forgot to do that this time. As for the taillights, well there isn't much about them that can be done. The reverse lights are molded into the body. In my opinion the entire taillight assemblies are too wide. Other than those discrepancies it does build into a decent looking truck. If you see these at Walmart again, they are worth picking up. I have a couple of these I'm going to use in future kitbash builds. Thanks for watching!

      Welcome to my channel and thank you. In the past couple of months I have played around with a couple different clears with mixed results. I can't seem to find one that works well with the paints that I use. I hope that you enjoy my videos and I have a lot more coming. Thanks for watching!

    not only is it red, its a real close match to Coca Cola Red
    I've been thinking about picking one of these up, thanks for the unboxing
    I heard somewhere that Testor's silver works to seal red plastic

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  11 місяців тому +1

      This kit was sprayed with the zinsser primer twice, and the red still poked through. I then shot silver over that. I thought it was good to go and shot some white paint over that. Still, the persistent red got through all of that. I ended up stripping all of that off and started over again. This time, I went with my old standby gray primer. Two coats of that and two coats of gloss white. It still has a very light pink tint if it's at the correct angle and light. For the most part, it's covered up. Just the paint on this kit took almost a month to get it right. The rest of the build took about a day or so. Thanks for watching.

    Question: do you sand your models down before priming them? I’ve heard that not sanding them doesn’t let the primer grab on as good but does sanding down your models really make a difference?

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for the great question. I have heard that some guys sand the bodies before laying down primer. In the 1:1 world, it's a good idea to do that to give the surface a little "tooth" for the primer to latch onto. It's probably a good idea to do that for model kits as well. I personally don't sand anything beyond removing mold lines and flash or the occasional light reshaping of a body panel. I do wash them with warm water and Dawn dish soap before primer. Generally speaking, I don't have any issues with the paint/primer peeling off of the bodies, so I know that it's adhering well. The problems that I experience most often are usually with paint compatibility even amongst same name brands. So, if you want to lightly sand your bodies before priming, it won't hurt to do it. Just be careful around thin name plates and other trim features. On some kits, these are done so lightly that it doesn't take much to erase them.

      @@scaleautoguysworkbench thanks for the respond! I do wonder. Do you put on the floor polish before the bare metal foil? I’m currently working on a model car myself and I’m kinda worried that if I put the bare metal foil on first and then put on the floor polish, it could lift the metal foil off.

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  10 місяців тому

      Sorry for the late reply! Yes, I do put the floor polish on before the foil. It may just be a preference thing but... in my mind I don't know what would happen if I did it in reverse. I've always done the clear then the foil. I guess the reason would be that the clear may affect the way the foil shines (it may dull it down).

    • @mrantiques8167
      @mrantiques8167 10 місяців тому

      @@scaleautoguysworkbench Thanks for the advice but I did add the polish on after the foil and really nothing happened and the foil actually came out more shiny than it was without the polish. Few days ago I completed a AMT model of Christine. It turned out pretty nice despite it being my first model car I’ve done.
