- Prawns (and shrimp) form a significant part of the diet of many saltwater species such as seabass, seatrout etc. Hence they are an important fly to have in your box of imitations. On the Irish coast there are prawns (often also referred to as shrimp) that hide in the kelp and weed. These tend to be larger and bulkier than the sandshrimp. Prawns tend to have long feelers and whiskers too. These along with their eyes are all distinguishing features to build into your fly pattern.
The pattern here has a hot spot that acts as an attractor for fish and helps the fly stand out amongst naturals. Fish the fly slowly or dead drift in a current. It can be retrieved more quickly where there is little or no flow to represent a fleeing prey item.
