Norm Norlander. He was a research engineer and avid fly fisher and tyer. That thing he's using is called a Norvise.. he invented it. Pretty neat. RIP Norm
Fax
Thanks for a brief glimpse into the window of this man’s legacy, his craft is truly beautiful.
I was wondering about that vice. Thank you
I'm sure he's missed terribly. He seems like a very good person. I'll bet he was a wonderful grandpa.
Where did he get the name "Norvise" from?
So chill. Almost like he forgets he’s being recorded and is just enjoying his hobby out loud.
I have learned so many hobbies and learned knowledge from ASMR, from accents to pen quilling to histories, to droid repair 😉 to skin regiment treatment.. It's a great learning tool
@@mauigio I see you listen to Dr. T
@@Frank-vc3wi it's very T E C H N I C A L😉
That's called insanity if he's talking to himself like this alone. "Understanding" ASMR involves some sort of mental illness, no doubt.
You
Yes, RIP Norm. He demonstrated his vise at hundreds of outdoor shows. I met him a few times at the Great Alaska Sportsman Show. Super nice guy who knew his stuff.
He shall be known far and wide as Bob Floss
Man I lLOLed when i read this.
Bob ross's first name is Norman as well!
Yoooo this ! Hahaha
🤣
@@kevincarpenter955 His middle name was Norman lol first was Robert
Came for the ASMR, stayed for the Badger Hackle
Classic....using a no.5 spay fly hook from Alec Jackson... How very Liquid Hwwhite of him
@@mauigio man I laughed so hard at this comment I cried
@@recension666 lol Good ol Bob Ross...happy to help 😉 thank you be safe friendo
Ooo
Sounds like a Midwestern sex position
I never appreciated how much time, patience and artistry it takes to craft an effective fishing lure. The interesting thing about skills like these is they're practical and useful.
I’m learning how to do this I know how to tie a elk hair caddis Parachute Adams pheasant tail nymph zebra midge and a lot more but I won’t say them
Is this really useful? I'm just using common sense and I'll be using worms or some bug.
@@GamerOner2H I'm sure that can work, but probably not as well as a skillfully crafted lure.
@@GamerOner2H It is useful... It's called an artificial fly and the whole point of fly fishing is to use artificial flies..
@@GamerOner2H extremely. There’s times when fish won’t touch anything but a fly, especially in freshwater. “Match the hatch” is a common phrase in fishing, and it means match whatever the fish are eating. Many times, they’re eating bugs. This is what flies generally imitate, and imitate so well.
Omg I use to make my own fly hooks with the same materials and techniques when I was 12. My old neighbor was a fisherman and teached me exactly what we can see in the video. It was so soothing. This vid brings me back memories of the good old days haha
Do you know what that tool is called? I'd kind of like to get one.
@@YeshuaIsTheTruth you mean the fly vise? It’s the one that holds the hook, and the one that hold ls the thread is a bobbin
The definition of the premium version lf Asmr is here too!
@@YeshuaIsTheTruth it’s a vise
My grandfather taught me when I was 3. I stopped tying flies for a hike except for when I was with him. I’m trying to get back into it now
When you watch the video to fall asleep, but you can’t because this guy’s love for his hobby is rubbing off on you
😩😩💯
Hobby of killing
@@ivangohome you know little of the process. Enjoy your chicken and turkey from the store, meanwhile the feathers and 30% of the animal are wasted.
@@oak8728 i don't mind it. I do mind him fishing for pleasure not necessity...
@@ivangohome so now your argument is on the catch and release aspect after getting beat on the first ha! Grow up. Did you know proper CnR tactics actually better a fish in the long run?
The Bob Ross of fly hooks.
The exact comment I was scrolling thru to find 😁
That chair looks really comfortable ngl
@Matt S. why are you concerned for the way i type?
@Under Bridge Thank you

It's one of those doctors have for guests.
Everybody gangsta ‘till they secure it with a half hitch

KICKED ME RIGHT IN THE SNELL!
I prefer the whip finnish
Im bouta pull out the dull hitch
“So let’s go and see how it’s put together, oookey?”
Ookayyy norm let’s do it!
RIP Norm. He just passed away.
At least the fish have nothing more to fear from his fat self.
@@JB1994 vegan detected
@@JB1994 ooof, you tripped on your clown shoes. Nice try, dingleberry.
Ceeyou Again Not even a decent vegan, who would recognise that more hobbyist fishermen lowers the demand for unsustainable industrial fish farms 🙄
I'm going fly fishing this weekend, hopefully ill catch one for Norm.
This gentleman uploaded video for 9 years, was one of the first to upload content regularly to UA-cam, he passed away a few years ago. But his work was on this platform
*Found this through a UA-cam video **enjoyable.fishing** recommend does exactly what its meant to do. Very durable and no hang-ups at all surprisingly*
My daddy makes his own flies. Watching this makes my heart happy.
Now THIS is art.
I found this fascinating. This fella is a master fly guy
Was*
Was* he sadly passed away. But he was a man who had a great unique hobby. And shared it with the world. May he rest in peace.
He is the one who design the Norvice
This reminds me of my grandpa. He used to make flys like this when I was young. I remember playing on the floor in his warm shop while he did this and I always got so tired in there that I'd fall asleep on the recliner he had in there. I didn't know it but that was my first taste of ASMR. Great memory. :)
Surprisingly I was more interested in the content and I hate fishing. Respect.
It’s kind of like blacksmiths and warriors. Sometimes, I find theory can be more interesting than practice, as strange as that sounds.
who the hell hates fishing?
You and me both.
@@lesclaypoolonbass9431 i thought exactly the same...
LesClaypool OnBass I met mr clay pool in our local tackle shop, cool dude 👍
I’ve never been much into fishing but this was fascinating. So sad to see he has passed away, he had such a soft and calm manner, bet he was just like this in person too!
Norm passed away in 2018 at the age of 79, it was reported he died peacefully in his sleep. Now that's the way to go. RIP
There's a real solid Bob Ross vibe to this man, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
And he doesn't even need to beat the Devil out of anything 😀
I usually only listen to ASMR. But I can't help watch this guy. Master craftsmen.
Man. I can barely untie headphones. He's picking strands like it's nothing. Great control and amazing work. This is a first class lesson. You're a legend Norm 👌
"Norm Norlander here. I'd like to demonstrate next that BREAD WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE TRIANGULAR."
SQUARE. LIKE A GOOD FIELD.

Oh man, when I was younger this was the first video I ever watched that gave me tingles, I've never been into fishing, but just the detail, the way he talks and how gentle he works makes it such a relaxing thing to watch. Thank you!
I've never fly-fished before... and I would honestly make these flies just because they look meditative and very pretty when they're done. I could listen to this nice man all day.
This guy reminds me of the scene in toy story where that guy fixes woody and polishes his eyes.
This is truly amazing. The attention to detail this man had was so awesome. Sad to hear he passed in 2018. He looks like a pretty awesome guy to fish with...
Was taught as a teenager how to tie flies on the banks of Michigans Ausable river and will never, ever forget my yearly trips fishing with my father for trout. Stumbled upon this vid somehow but what a blast from the past And...very calming.
I love the norvice thing is amazing
Man, each fly is a work of art in its own right.
Steelhead Is a rainbow trout from the Ocean that is very very hard to catch
Props to the camera guy for getting the close-up shots too.
Holy cow this man was a skilled professional. RIP Sir. I highly enjoy his video.
Rest In Peace, Norm. The man loved what he did, that’s for sure.
Atheist Hipster Yeah he died may 14, 2018. Rip
@@bigbassmaster6924 Not that long ago! I was thinking the 90's that he died
5/10 - didn't twist the devil out of it.
jk i enjoyed every single second :D People being passionate about something rather obscure are sooo fascinating and do the best ASMR
My theory is that this is exactly why asmr exists in our biology.
Those are the best lures I've ever seen. This man's work is really outstanding.
In b4 “pretty fly for a white guy” jokes
Darn... just saw this after posting one. I still stand by it though. :P
"Clever"
I love when he says “mmkay” RIP norm. Thanks for the relaxation.
I wanted to watch, relax and fall asleep. Instead, I'm captivated.
Is this the "Bob Ross" of fly tying? So chill...
They were both artists in their own way
If I were a fish and I knew the craftsmanship this guy exercised to make these exquisite lures - I wouldn’t bite them because that might ruin them....:)
We all need more friends like Norm in our lives.
He makes this look so easy
I actually couldn't focus on the asmr aspect because of how impressive this is. He makes that look so easy.
Guys who tie flies are a different breed. I just go to Walmart and buy crankbaits and spinnerbaits and soft baits.
I was so interested in his skills and knowledge of lures I stayed for the whole video. This man could teach anything and I’d listen, what a gem he was!
This just about as much sense to me as watching the making of a Plumbus
He was a quiet man. A fly fisherman mostly, at that time.
About to fall asleep standing up
Hes got me hooked. Haha
Norm changed the world. Thank you Sir Norm. U make my sleeps better. Rest in Power Sir. 🙏🏿
The Bob Ross of fly-fishing lol
That chair looks super comfy.
So devoted to his craft. I'm sorry to hear he's no longer with us. God bless him.
He looks like your average small town country doctor that still makes house calls!
Santa’s workshop 364 days of the year
bro... hahahahaha
Tingles. Nice 'n firm-like.
my grandfather was an avid fly fisherman, this makes me miss him so much❤
3:30 "Now we're ready for The Wings."
Hell yeah bröther i love Paul McCartney
Thinking about making a loop of him saying "hackle" for 10 hours
I would love more video compilations of mr. norm! Such a relaxing topic and it’s just overall awesome to watch him work
This might be my favorite UASMR video yet, thank you, and thank you Mr. Norlander! 🙏
I'm so reminded of my papaw... He loved to fish and brings back memories
I use a different vise which I love but I can see the benefits of the Novise it sure makes dubbing so easy, Norm was a master in his craft sorry to see him go but not forgotten.
Brilliant! I always wanted to know how to tie flies. Norm is outstanding in his informative, knowledgeable and relaxed manner.
Almost, The Bob Ross of fly fishing ... splendid stuff !👍
The subtleties within the perception and hunting instincts of a fish that necessitate such specific and skilled craftsmanship here are what really fascinate me. I suppose it’s a massively long lineage of trial and error which allows craftsman like this to be able to conceive of truly effective lures.
I legitimately thought it was going to be a tutorial on how to tie a housefly to a string 😂. I haven’t been sleeping well so I kind of skimmed through the title.
Favorite ASMR video ever. I love fly fishing, especially in Alaska and asmr. Best of both worlds 🥰
He's like the bob Ross of fly fishing
I've actually met this guy! Really Nice guy with an excellent vise! He actually passed away a few years ago, sad day. RIP Norm
Ya know what dude. You got ya fly fishing, you match the hatch - boom!
The Bob Ross of fly tying. What a legend.
Love the idea of unintentional ASMR! 😍
Yes finally! I live for fly tying 😊
best video on this channel
This man is so darn good with those little rascals and obviously is loving the whole process.
In 5 min I just learned several new techniques....wow. Awesome video.
Caught my first Steel Head here in the PNW when I was about 8 years old. Almost dragged me into the water as my heels dug into the pebbles and mud. My dad and my brother in law had to grab me and we all 3 got it reeled in. I was super proud as a kid. RIP Norm, hope they’re biting up there.
Would’ve been the perf video if not for the outro!!! I watch unintentionally asmr at night (I live with someone) and I’m self conscious about watching asmr infront of them. So the outro really OUTS me 🙃
Still not sure if I fully understand what a hackle is, but I sure do know how to prep one properly now!
so this is why we cant make multiple fish bait at a time in animal crossing
Also you don't get much meat out of those little clams.
This video made me buy this system ... Norm was a very nice calming guy 🙏
Wow, that is incredible. I fish a lot, but i don't fly fish. Just got a whole new level of respect for people that make their own flys. That's some serious detail and attention there.
This mans shirt is impeccably pressed. I feel like it’s probably under appreciated.
I know 0 about fly fishing, but I could watch and listen to this all day
I learned to tie flies when I was a teenager. Was good at it, even made money selling them. For some reason I got out of it and haven't done it in 20 years now. Still fly fish a lot though. This has me wanting to take it up again.
Ha....funny running into your old comments😂 I actually did take it up again though. Sitting here tying flies now and on UA-cam looking for ideas
Thank you for the book!
Growing up, my family had a VHS set of fly-tying videos and we always joked they were a sleep aid.
I know absolutely nothing about fishing but that’s skills there.
Fly fishing has drama too! Search The Feather Heist by RadioLab.
This man is the inventor of "the boys fishing trip" when ever we get stuck we can look to this guy and he'll help
Amazing work - beautiful!!!
I feel honored to be able to Liston to this man tyeing. So instrumental for the world of fly tyeing. I like Tim. But nobody will ever take Norms spot. His voice is so relaxing.
This is so interesting I love fishing I find this relaxing and educational
8:38 “do about five wraps” does exactly five in under a quarter of a second lol.
love how he says "artsy craftsy" store lol
