And "detox" Dude, I have healthy, functional liver and two whole kidneys to do that for me, and if I didn't, your OrGaNiC, aLL nAtUrAl woo woo balm will not help me lmao
Yeh ever heard of Nicotine patches, the skin is highly ABSORBENT, that's how Nicotine gets ABSORBED. What so you think that the body has some sort of mechanism to not absorb the chemicals in deodorants!🤣🤪
I feel something that the majority of people don't realise is that a result observed in a single paper needs to be replicated across the globe and obtain similar results for it to be an established fact. This is what is happening in case of vaccines too. One study in an obscure journal linking something to a disease and people start avoiding it like a plague!!
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience The science on rationality is younger than most school books, better not expect that to start sticking for another two decades.
I ruined my gums to the point of no repair because i used a toothpaste without fluoride for like half a year :( now i have paradontitis and almost had to get a teeth removed at age 20
I've read some studies and some of the concern is justified but it still doesn't take away the fact that it is the best ingredient to protect the teeth. There have also been some studies with different fluoride alternatives and some of them seem promising but they need more research before they start being used in toothpaste. I did this research a long time ago so I can't remember much tbh. I think too much fluoride ingestion is bad.
THIS. Fluoride in just about anything really. There's claims that it "calcifies your pineal gland" and "lowers IQ". Hard to believe and not sure where they come from, but they are there. Would love to see a video on fluoride.
Yes!!! I’m a dental hygienist and always recommend fluoridated toothpaste for my patients. It’s not the evil toxic chemical everyone thinks it is and it actually takes a lot at once for it to be anywhere near harmful (like most things). Those fear mongering studies focus on extremely high amounts of fluoride in drinking water in places where it wasn’t even regulated. The amount we use for toothpaste doesn’t even come close unless you decide to make it a part of your diet and eat a whole tube.
Haven’t watched whole video yet. Don’t know what the native d.o. is either. But my step mom wouldn’t wear anything bc she didn’t want to get Alzheimer’s. She now has one of the worst cases seen. 😔
I wish more people did the research or at least watched your channel. I’m so tired of people telling me what I can and can’t use and “basing” it on pseudoscience
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Isn't your mom a nurse? I understand the concern back in 90's/early 2000's - but that was 20 years ago!! The science did not bear it out. I would even say such information lacks the dismay/terror of the antivaxxers, who "see" vaccination and autism onset around the same life periods and assume a (false) causal link. (They have my sympathy because being a parent to this small defenseless person is scary and hard, and a parent's life changes dramatically after a birth. But a seemingly logical correlation is not necessarily correct.) However, treasure Mom anyway!! I miss mine every day....
Honestly though....I love their deoderant. Not because I’m scared of aluminum, it just seems to work well for me and it’s not sticky like a lot of others. Don’t like that they are spreading that point to scare people into buying though, I wasn’t aware of that. 😔
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Yeah, that's why I hate when people say "just ask a doctor" for scientific or medical advice. Doctors believe in BS all the time, and they also disagree on many things. 🙃
Thank you! I am an admin for a FB group for tretinoin and retinoid users and you have no idea how often I link your videos as resources for the issues that come up in the group. The damage that these fearmongering groups do is epic and so hard to convince people that the myths are just that ...myths. Thanks for all you do.
I'm really glad that you bust those myths. I'm a cosmetologist, and i was taught a lot of bullshit at school, so when i graduated i started to reevaluate what i learnt. Your chanel is very helpfull. Thank you for your work.
@@Poemi10304 Not at all. One of my teachers said that drugstore shampoo has "wax" in it and it builds up on people's hair - her source, of course, was anecdotal evidence with working with her clients. This is nonsense though. The only ingredient in shampoos that could "build up" are silicones, which actually are great for protecting the hair. The solution is simply to wash with a clarifying shampoo before cutting, coloring, or styling. Also - lots of higher end shampoos use the same ingredients that "drugstore" ones do - High end companies don't have a monopoly on cosmetic ingredients.
@@reihino7857 I also don’t use silicones on my hair, but in my case it’s not because I don’t like them as ingredients, it’s just that to remove them from the hair you need to use shampoo with sulfates and I despise shampoo with sulfates. They make my hair drier and make my color dye fade quicker. But I don’t think silicons are bad for the hair. Your hair is made of dead cells, there’s no way you can “nourish” them, they’re dead. Everything you put on your hair is for “immediate results” in some way. Because of that, preventing damage is a better way than fixing it.
I'm so glad my cosmetology school didn't promote myths like this. Even the nutrition portion: After, I went on to college and took nutrition courses there, and all my base knowledge from cosmetology school was accurate and made the classes a lot easier! One of my teachers at cosmetology school also made a point of debunking diet myths beyond what those classes touched. It didn't occur to me to be grateful that my instructors were scientifically literate until now. I thought that was going to be a basic expectation.
Thank you!! Just like parabens, people are starting to demonize aluminium without proper searching. I myself avoid deodorants with alcohol because it gives cysts in my armpits, but I see that in most people it's completely fine, so I don't go saying everybody should avoid it.
Loved the video! I'm a laboratory technician that works in biochemistry and man let me tell you, Aluminium is SO hard to assay reliably because it's so difficult to avoid contamination. If the sample's so much as been NEAR any machinery it'll have picked up a few micrograms. We had huge issues preparing our standards and calibrators a while back, turns out the issue was our air conditioning, being made of metal, was blasting traces of aluminium everywhere. Can't have the windows open during firework season because of the traces of aluminium in the firework smog that hangs around. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if some of these studies finding aluminium in resected tissues were picking up bits of aluminium from the surgical tools.
It's scary how much facts and insightful interpretation of these facts are condensed in this video. This is the first time I ever turned on notification bell for anyone on UA-cam btw.
Your body is supposed to sweat tho.. also if you’re worried about cancer. Dairy consumption (lots of pregnant female hormones) increases risk of breast cancer by 34 percent but do your own research and thinking. If anything give up liquid dairy butter, there’s plant based versions of both ice cream. Cheese is a lot harder because it’s more concentrated and the casein turns into casomorphein cheese is a literal drug addiction. The casein is supposed to give a mild addiction to the calf making them stay near their mother.
I really appreciate this post. Mostly so that I can share it with all the people that think I am crazy for using antiperspirants w/aluminum. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. When I started to let people know, I was surprised by the amount of people who said it was from my deodorant. Like I brought this on myself! How ridiculously stupid and insensitive. Even when I explain to them that there is no link between cancer and aluminum and that my surgeon and oncologist say that as well... people are just determined to believe the myth. You just can't fix stupid...
Any doctor that is telling you there is no connection is lying. Most doctors aren't well-versed and are reading off a script. They don't know how to even look at the studies properly. Aluminium blocks your pores which stops sweating and the release of toxins. These toxins then sit in your lympth nodes. These same doctors that will tell you there is no proof will say just because there are aluminium/parabens in your breast tissue doesn't mean it was caused by your deodorant. They don't want to put 1 and 1 together.
Love this video! Go science! BUT I’m trying to make more sustainable purchases and I have yet to find a zero-plastic deodorant with aluminum. It’s so frustrating that being environmentally conscious is intertwined with “all natural” pseudoscience. Especially since things like GMOs are actually helpful in cutting down the harm of farming to the environment
Yes! All the zero waste products are usually zero effective ingredient and I hate it! I'm using a benzoyl peroxide soap under the arms because it kills the bacteria largely responsible for stink, and I don't mind the sweat.
I have the same issue. “All-natural” has never worked for me-in haircare, skincare, deodorant, or body wash. Unfortunately a lot of companies try to appeal to as many overlapping niches as possible to increase their target audience size, so very often zero waste and all-natural are put together. I have found a single deodorant (Nivea Dry Comfort roll-on) that is packaged in glass and is an antiperspirant.
I have used an after shave stick ('alum' is that the English word?) as a deodorant for a long time. It was 100 % aluminum and worked really well against smell and was wrapped in paper without any plastic. Maybe that's an idea?
Great video! It’s really annoying that these myths have been persisting for so long.... Unfortunately, I am someone with an aluminum sensitivity, so I’m forced to use these “chemicals are bad for you” companies. After trying numerous products, I would recommend Native and Arm & Hammer deodorants, if anyone is looking. They do work and keep a fresh smell but they have a high pH that can be irritating so just be mindful of that.
One thing that might be worth trying is an acid exfoliant - a lot of people who've tried both have told me the acid exfoliants are less irritating for them, but there's probably some variation there! labmuffin.com/chemical-exfoliants-as-deodorant-the-science-of-smelly-armpits/
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience I’ve tried both AHA and BHA with no luck yet! Lime juice did actually work in the winter, but I know that’s a bad idea 😶 I’ll keep looking haha Edit: Kosas has an AHA deodorant! I’ll try that next.
Excellent video on a very persistent myth. The part about aluminum in our diets being 200 times higher was particularly convincing. Also a good point that not drinking is probably a much more important lifestyle choice to make if you’re concerned about breast cancer (and other health issues).
I use the Dr. Dray method, aka benzoyl peroxide wash/soap for the pits. This is mostly because I'm super prone to ingrown hairs and a bar of benzoyl peroxide soap has a lot less plastic packaging than deodorant. Edit: I should clarify that BP is good for ingrown hairs and not that aluminum is a known risk factor for the things.
Aluminum having a health effect? That’s not why I avoid aluminum deodorant at all. I stopped using it because aluminum deodorants stain clothing. “Natural” alternatives don’t. Idc about the marketing appeal to nature either, I just got tired of gym shirts getting stained.
Totally valid reason! I'm actually considering switching back for the same/opposite reason: the natural deodorants that work best for me stain my clothing even more than anti-perspirant does!
Thinking about it, I don’t think I’ve had many staining issues with natural deos if any! I switched because natural deos are much better smelling IMO but now I need to go examine all the armpits of my shirts 😂
I can't believe this is the first time in my adult life (literally, I've been hearing the aluminium causes breast cancer story since I started using deodorant at 13) that someone has debunked this, or that I've heard scientific literature which debunks it. I've always considered myself a critical thinking person, so it's really eye-opening to me that I got sucked into this one for such a long time.. after being on the "natural health" and "clean beauty" and "toxin-free lifestyle" trends for a number of years, it does really start to make you feel betrayed by the people who sell you the expensive stuff that is supposedly "healthier" for you
The fact that I’ve got an ad for an organic deodorant that suggest detoxifying my armpits first 😫😫 I don’t comment often because I don’t know what to say but I love your videos and I am really appreciative of your work 🖤
This is a topic that bothers me a lot because most people don't understand the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant. If you don't want to use aluminum but still want to smell fresh then just buy regular deodorant and wipe your armpits between showers. You don' need to pay three times the price for "natural" gimmicks. Thank you for the video! The aluminum thing just drives me crazy anytime someone tries to tell me I'm going to get cancer for not wanting to be sweaty.
Your info always saves me money. Any of the natural deodorants I’ve tried either didn’t work at all, gave me a rash and one even caused a very painful cyst in my arm pit! No, I can’t say I’ve tried them all but I’m done blowing $8 a stick experimenting on myself.
Rashes are from baking soda. There are baking soda free options. The smell is a reaction from your body being dependant on the aluminum. It takes some time until it works. I've been using naturel deo for 13 years and would never go back to aluminum.
Jacklyn Narian it was actually a year without conventional antiperspirant and I tried some without baking soda too. Turns out there’s no compelling health reasons not to use what works for me so why waste my money?
Thank you so much for this breakdown! Not only for presenting the truth, but for explaining the appeal of the lie! It’s so important for us laypeople to think critically about the hysteria surrounding certain ingredients or categories of products. Your expert opinion is invaluable!
Fellow nerd/scientist (nanochemist): I love your videos, the way you communicate science, and on topics that are accessible. I share your videos in hopes you get more followers. Keep it up!
Even though I believe the science, but when I used aluminium deo , I use to have breast and underarm pit pain. I stopped using it and since 2019 I haven't had pain. Could just be the deodorant but I did switch regular brands twice. People should just pay close attention to themselves and do what is best for them
This was super helpful - thank you! My Mum swapped me to aluminium-free stuff when her friend got diagnosed when I was a kid. Since then I've had a fear that choosing aluminium ones is bad for me (despite doing as it works super well for the stink). I'll happily continue to use it and not smell!
I didn’t knew about this myth, interesting to hear it, I switched from regular base aluminum deodorant to a natural one since I couldn’t figure out the reaction that happened between my sweat and the compounds in the product that made my t-shirt to have ugly yellow stains really hard to get out.
While I know it is perfectly safe, I still don't like to use aluminium deodorants for several other reasons: 1. it is uncomfortable, irritating and drying. 2. it gives me increased problems with blocked pores and ingrown hairs. 3. it stains and is harsh on fabrics. So for those reasons I am thankful that alternative, odour neutralising products have become more available. I also find them more efficient for me, personally, at keeping away smells for longer. I just hope these products are also being scrutinised as aluminium has been.
My chemistry teacher used to warn us against anti perspirants (that was over 10 years ago btw), claiming they'd likely give us breast cancer, so of course I trusted him and tried to avoid them but that didn't work out too well so I stopped some time ago. Thank you for your videos, they're very helpful.
Whenever people talk about deodorant/antiperspirant it's always about the smell. I have hyperhidrosis from a medication I take/medical condition and as a symptom of anxiety, underarm scent is only a factor of why I use antiperspirant. It's mostly to actually cut down how much I sweat. And odor concerns are just as much the natural smell of sweat that is all over as well as the distinct scent of underarm sweat. And before I had hyperhidrosis, I was self conscious about underarm sweat leaving sweat stains, I never wore thin materials that could show wetness, I never saw other girls sweat stains so I felt like a freak. It's still something we weirdly see as taboo, women/feminine people sweating. And despite it being dumb, these ideas still affect us, and particularly the most vulnerable of us like those with underlying body image issues. So it's really important for those targeting underarm and other sweating/BO areas to consider actual sweating as the main concern for many and not just the scent.
If I ever get worried about claims like this I immediately check if you have a video on it and you calm me down! Thank you for being a trustworthy (and entertaining) resource 🥰🥰🥰
thank you for giving actual science a fighting chance with your work, it can be so intimidating as a non-expert civillian to look at the studies and try to understand why and how they come to certain conclusions, the relevant context to interpret the study being made to begin with!! its much better for my anxiety to comprehend the information than just avoiding everything ever just in case the rumor mill is right
I've seen this mith so much and supported by so many people that I know/follow, that I've changed my deodorants to aluminum free ones, and of course they didn't work as well as the ones with aluminium, and this has frustrated me so much!! Its been two years! I sweat a lot, so I have to keep on washing my armpits a lot of times per day to effectively get rid of the stink... But now after your video I'm stopping this madness and buying myself some good old effective antiperspirant. THANK YOU!!!
I also think there's a very underrated factor of nutrition when it comes to cancer. One has to weigh these both, reduce risk factors, eat right, and you are doing all you can. While studying medicine, I could not stop thinking about why isn't the benefits of right nutrition advertised more in order to combat cancer, because the right food can help those tiny tumor suppressor genes work to their fullest
A few people mentioned AP causing yellow stains in their T-shirts - I remember this problem in college when I had inferior exercise clothing (all cotton), used inferior detergent (not Tide), and put all the shirts in the dryer. Now I only wear merino wool or dri-release/wicking fabrics like polyester, so none of it is ever in the dryer, and everything is washed in cold with Tide. Secret Outlast doesn't cause yellowing under this routine. I also apply AP at night after showering just prior to bed. It is more effective that way, and be careful not to apply too much.
This is how I found you! Got sucked into this and then started looking for scientific skincare coverage and info on misinformation in skincare. Thanks for your amazing work!
That is such good news because I was trying to use natural deodorants that were aluminum free for the longest time and I couldn't find one that eliminated the odor. I always had issues I switched brands like 6 times trying to find the right 1 that wouldn't make my armpits feel sticky and smell like a mixture of fragrance and odor until I started using Secret that has aluminum and a clear gel and this deodorant is amazing!!! It completely solved my problem. It keeps me dry and smelling fresh all day, And if I don't wash before bed I still don't smell even when I wake up in the morning, and I live in Florida where it's hot sticky most of the year. Thank you for this information 🤗
The reason me an my bf avoid antiperspirants is because of painful lumps in the pits we've had from them in the past. Antipersporant is something doctors will tell you to just stop using if you start developing cysts in your pits. The deodorant we have found has actually been working better for us to get rid of the smell. That being said, those natural baking soda and coconut oil deodorants are probably an even worse thing to put on your armpits.
@@Turtletoots3 Interesting. When I found out, I started to use these natural deodorants but they weren't holding my sweat or smell, then I talked with my dad about it and he said "I have the same problem and my doctor told me to avoid deodorant with alcohol", I tried his advice and here we are, now I use a cheap and very effective antiperspirant cream in my country.
This video was super helpful - I’m particularly high risk for breast cancer and I am so tired of people telling me that I have to do all these things to avoid getting it. It’s largely out of my control - buying more expensive deodorant isn’t going to help me
Thank you for this exhaustive video. I've heard doctors say that aluminium is safe, so I wasn't worrying about it, but it is always helpful to have such an understandable and argumentative explanation.
Best deodorant I've ever used was gillette but the darn stuff just tore my armpits up. Now I'm stuck with "natural" solutions that hardly work. Brilliant video as always.
I never knew there was all this discourse over aluminum. 🤔 I never had a problem with dove and regular deodorants until I hit puberty. Then all of a sudden they started breaking me out so I switched to natural stuff. Great video 💕
Great Myth-busting video again! I actually stopped using aluminium-based deodorants because I don't like what they do to the clothes. They're too strong for the fabrics and they end up stiff and white or yellow very quickly. I'm trying out the AHA method or I use a deodorant with milk protein and triclosan (I think?) This works fine for a normal day, since I don't sweat much (also the AHA is great for my perpetual ingrown hairs). I do use normal ones when I exercise tho. They're the most effective.
Can you believe I'd been putting baking soda on my armpit for 5 years before my armpit started to flake, itch, and darken because I believed anti perspirant deodorants were bad 😭😂
Ever since I saw one of your Instagram post, I've been using glycolic acid for my underarms and it's been working amazingly. Even when I do get a little musty, it's not as bad as it could be. I just have to be really careful not to be rough when I'm washing because it'll sting to put it on after. Thanks for that rec again!
I had to change, not because I thought aluminum caused cancer, but because my skin is prone to acne and antiperspirant deodorants gave me "bumps" (open comedones and cysts). I had to switch to Crystal. It has been a huge transition. I used to smell like onions if I didn't wear antiperspirant, and sometimes with antiperspirant too. After 3 months of changing my diet and my deodorant, I exercise and continue my day without bathing in the morning, with no body odor at all! If you are thinking of healthier things for your skin, because you have noticed blackheads, or cysts in your underarms, go for it! The transition is not easy, and I thought that my onion smell would never go away, but it did!!! Just, don't try anything that you have to mix yourself and no essential oils.
As a dude, I never thought I’d find myself on a beauty science channel, but this is an incredible video. I really appreciate that you looked some of the counter evidence and exception cases at the end :)
As a radiologic technologist who does mammograms (as are I think all of not a good percentage of us performing exams, are also women) let me make this clear. Aluminum salts are metal. Metal shows up in x-ray. So we have you remove it so we (the radiologist, and this the RT) can see your lymph nodes near your breast tissue. So a baby wipe fixes this during the exam but an antiperspirant or deodorant is obscuring the image by creating smears or dots on the area of interest. So imaging of this area needs clean skin to prevent false alarms. It's a lower dose radiation in comparison to a CT so it isn't as good at telling apart metal from cyst from cancer. So this is why in order to keep low radiation doses we need a clean "area of interest" aka wipe those pits clean. Thank you for helping clear this misinformation as many times this isn't explained clearly in the 5-10 mins I have to do an imaging exam due to the American healthcare system just not giving us enough time or even energy to have an average RT explain this to every PT for every exam for every day 5 days a week. I see roughly 20-40 people in a day. You want me to compress that tissue quickly, explain how to reduce the pain of the procedure and take great images in 5 mins (or in the case of my speedy coworker 3 mins and 36 sec. She has yet to beat that time. However when you got 30lbs of pressure on one boob- you want speed to make that exam the least amount of time you need that discomfort. We are running to make sure you have less pain. We promise, this is the most loving thing you want us to focus on when you are in discomfort, speed and accuracy. Don't mistake that for disinterested or uncompassionate.) So I could see how not explaining where we see it in imaging and the fear mongering of short form TikTok videos can be a huge factor. I'm sharing this with my coworkers so we don't continue to spread misinformation in an attempt to be part of a bigger system of healthcare that does care about women's health. So get your Mammo yearly and don't wear deodorant for that exam. Enjoy science making you sweat free the other 364 days a year if that helps you go to the gym, focus on your health, socialize with your family because to suffer when science has a solution that this brilliant lady of STEM has taken an extreme amount of research to deliver in a shorter format. ❤ I appreciate your work. Even if I saw it three years later than you made it your efforts were not lost and one day I hope that I am as good at delivering education as you are. I honestly admire that you didn't let trolls and bullies on the Internet knock away your quest in providing quality information because it's one of the reasons I don't create videos, fear of public judgement not based upon what I'm saying but by what I look like. So seeing you makes me feel a little braver and possibly trying even though I'm an older, overweight woman with multi colored hair. You are beautiful inside and out. This was informative and I think a long rant letting you know is also worth so very little vs. the clear amount of hours you put into this video. I hope you see this and remain the wonderful educator you are. #womenofSTEM
I just found out for myself that alcohol is too drying for me and antiperspirants make me sweat much more on my face and the rest of my body (maybe because they are not letting me sweat under my arms). So I have switched to a different deodorant without alcohol which doesn't prevent sweating, just the stink. I think people should just find what's best for them based on science, and trial and error on their own body.
I stopped using dove sticks because of these rumors, and started using sodium bicarbonate, and it turned out to be better at keeping the odour in check, easier to wash away, it doesn't block the sweat but personally I was more concerned with b.o. rather than sweat. It's also cheaper and it doesn't rotten but I wonder if it might cause other type of damage :S
I read that aluminium salts in antiperspirant can react with sweat and cause yellow staining in white clothes. Not sure if this is true, but that would be a good reason to avoid aluminium I suppose😂. Does anyone know more about this?
For me, it is not about the agent - in this case aluminum - it is a about the fact that sweating is normal, is needed. Can clogging the sweat glands routinely be good, you think?
What if you’re a woman who shaved their armpits (small areas of broken skin) wherein the aluminum will absorb at a much higher rate, as it’s going directly into the bloodstream? Maybe not fully broken skin, but shaving definitely produces minor breaks in the skin where absorption could be dramatically higher…just a curious thought though, great video 😃
Soooo glad you did this video! There's so much fear-mongering regarding aluminum and as someone who has a degree in the sciences it makes me just want to bang my head on a desk. Love your channel! :)
At first I thought I was misunderstanding your accent… now I have doubts that you might be doing it on purpose. Are you saying “nerdification” instead of “notification”? It’s genius!
Thank you!! Been using aluminum free deodorant for 6+ months and I’ve been trying to convince myself it’s working…. It’s just not. Back to regular deodorant I go!
So funny, saw a Lumē advertisement just before the video started. 😆 I tried using more natural deodorants and I just can’t anymore. Bought a nice strong aluminum-filled antiperspirant and it works like dream. I can actually skip a day & use a non-aluminum deo instead.
Excellent points, especially mentioning the infamous link between contraceptives and breast cancer. However, no one really wants to talk about that, right. I do believe that this is the reason I got it (and tank God already healthy again).
Thank you for this super-informative, reference-packed video! I switched to natural deodorants about a decade ago, partly because of the breast cancer myth and partly because I have sensitive skin and was getting armpit rashes. I wound up with a sensitivity to bicarb-based deodorants too, so I'm now on Native's fragrance-free stick, which works fine, but leaves terrible white residue on my predominantly black clothing. Considering going full-circle and switching back to fragrance-free anti-perspirants.
Love this video, watched all the ads in the vid to support you :) I've been using TO glycolic acid toner in the morning and an aluminum gel deodorant at night and my pits have less odour and lighter in colour overall.
Thank you so much for your EBM methodology. I heard to so much that aluminium was harmful that I never checked myself ! Let obscurantism return to obscurity !
I find I am more comfortable not using antiperspirants- I find it works for a number of hours and then I sweat really heavily. Deodorant works well and over an average day I will sweat less using it. It is odd. I also keep ending up using products that are paraben free, but only because I am sensitive to some sulfates and they tend not to put parabens in the products that have less harsh sulfates or are sulfate free.
This is so late but I was wondering if you could go over the recent and popular issue with the chemical Formaldehyde being in shampoos. There seems to be a connection between hair falling out and this chemical so id love to hear your take on it.
I wonder how safe they are. Like 100% safe? These studies definitely sound like more research is needed and that a double blind longitudinal clinical trial needs to be done. These correlation studies seem a little ridiculous when antiperspirant use is so common and there are so many other causes for breast cancer and Alzheimer’s. It definitely doesn’t make me think aluminum salts are completely safe. It really sounds like the research just isn’t there to confidently say there’s no cause and effect at play. That said, this was still a great breakdown of the research! Excellent presentation!
Hey! I have a question: You mentioned that the studies claiming DNA damage from Aluminum used very high concentrations of Aluminum, that are much higher amounts than the body normally has--but what about the gradual accumulation of aluminum in the body over time, insidiously? Would that accumulation amount to that high level used in that study? Or is it still unrealistic? Thanks!
my skin reacts bad with aluminum and fluoride. i remember when the products i needed were cheaper than regular ones... i guess i like that theres more options now but god damn theyre expensive
Im relieved to know that the few years i did use antiperspirants dont doom me to a future of breast cancer. However i still greatly enjoy using traditional deodorants as opposed to antiperspirants for my own personal reasons of preferring to sweat naturally and just covering up the smell as opposed to preventing sweat overall
I use aluminum free deodorant but only because I realized that I really didn't give a crap about sweat (like you mentioned at end). But this was super interesting!!
Thank you, I was shopping online and was bombarded by “natural” “aluminum free” blah blah. Was wondering what the hell it was all about and had me indecisive but now I can shop easy.
Awesomeness 💕 Thank you for this much needed information. I never believed this because I asked my doctors. I am 58 and am enough to know to believe very little of what you hear and even less of what is on the internet.
Thank you, this was great! I would like to know how much do we need or not need to shower and wash. I think there are parts of our bodies that need to be washed every day but also that people shower too often.
But what about switching to natural deodorants because normal deodorants mask sweat rather than fixing the root cause. How do you get rid of the underarm smell?
You can get rid of the sweat, or you can get rid of the bacteria. Aluminium is great for both - by blocking the sweat ducts it reduces sweat, plus it makes it less moist which means less bacteria. Acid exfoliants like The Ordinary Glycolic Toning Solution work as well by lowering the pH to make it less hospitable to bacteria. "Natural" deodorants don't really have any advantages over other products here.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience So all these people that are doing the armpit detoxes , is it just a trend or is there any benefit? Thank you for replying btw :)
i think Michelle mentioned in another video that chemical exfoliants work? I can't remember exactly what she said though :) chemicals that are acidic (normal deodorants aren't) are often better smell neutralisers, hence why a lot of natural deodorants have things like lemon and citrus
Ever since you discussed using AHA/BHA as deodorant in an article I've never looked back. Pretty useful too since 90% of commercial deos irritate or burn my underarms. My pits have never been this stink-free, ingrown-free and smooth. 😘
@@perry6660 Stridex 2% BHA acne pads. They're pretty cheap and effective. I won't use them on the face though since it has fragrance and menthol. But I've tried using my other AHA toners and serums too and they also work just not as cheap lol.
Thanks for the video Michelle! Can you please do one on parabens? I know you’ve done it in the past, but a full video in this sort of format would be awesome 😊

That's fine, hope you enjoy your teflon, fluoride, fire retardants in everything, forever chemicals, just carry on.

I feel something that the majority of people don't realise is that a result observed in a single paper needs to be replicated across the globe and obtain similar results for it to be an established fact. This is what is happening in case of vaccines too. One study in an obscure journal linking something to a disease and people start avoiding it like a plague!!
Ugh, I wish people were taught better critical thinking skills in school, I think it would make the world a nicer, more rational place :(
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience I agree!!! Also thank you for the heart!!!
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience The science on rationality is younger than most school books, better not expect that to start sticking for another two decades.
"Study." Andrew Wakefield's paper had SO much wrong with it, calling it a "study" is an affront to science.
I agree with you but, its something as simple as deodorant then I'm going to avoid it like the plague.
I would love to see you talk about fluoride in toothpaste! There is so much fear mongering with that!
@@raygin6581 ohhh noooo :(
Gurl, gurl....this video is long overdue, our science angel! That Native deodorant has been taking over the youtubes

Haven’t watched whole video yet. Don’t know what the native d.o. is either. But my step mom wouldn’t wear anything bc she didn’t want to get Alzheimer’s. She now has one of the worst cases seen. 😔
It may not be better that aluminum deodorant but like it's smells so good 😳 it's good if you have weird sensitive skin and just want a solid perfume.
And I got an ad for Lumé 😂
yes! I started using "natural deodorant" during a phase and it was fucking awful lol it irritates my skin so bad unlike regular deodorant
I wish more people did the research or at least watched your channel. I’m so tired of people telling me what I can and can’t use and “basing” it on pseudoscience

The irony of a Lume deoderant ad popping up in this video 😆
Ugh, their founder says the scientific consensus is that there's no link but she has a "hunch". She's an MD.
Honestly though....I love their deoderant. Not because I’m scared of aluminum, it just seems to work well for me and it’s not sticky like a lot of others. Don’t like that they are spreading that point to scare people into buying though, I wasn’t aware of that. 😔

I suppose they’re not big on scientific research at cosmetology schools. 😅
Me too,, was taught a lot of rubbish,, her videos has helped me a lot
Thank you so much! 😊
You mean to tell me, I’ve switched to “natural” deodorant and been stinky for two years for no reason? 🤯

The very best Ron White quote 🙂
Any doctor that is telling you there is no connection is lying. Most doctors aren't well-versed and are reading off a script. They don't know how to even look at the studies properly. Aluminium blocks your pores which stops sweating and the release of toxins. These toxins then sit in your lympth nodes. These same doctors that will tell you there is no proof will say just because there are aluminium/parabens in your breast tissue doesn't mean it was caused by your deodorant. They don't want to put 1 and 1 together.
How ridiculously stupid and insensitive.
I agree! Plastic-free isn't always the best option though, I wish it was that straightforward! 😩
Yes! All the zero waste products are usually zero effective ingredient and I hate it!
I'm using a benzoyl peroxide soap under the arms because it kills the bacteria largely responsible for stink, and I don't mind the sweat.
@@pippetandpossum Glass isn't as environmentally friendly as it's made out to be unfortunately!

I use the Dr. Dray method, aka benzoyl peroxide wash/soap for the pits. This is mostly because I'm super prone to ingrown hairs and a bar of benzoyl peroxide soap has a lot less plastic packaging than deodorant.

Aluminum having a health effect? That’s not why I avoid aluminum deodorant at all. I stopped using it because aluminum deodorants stain clothing. “Natural” alternatives don’t. Idc about the marketing appeal to nature either, I just got tired of gym shirts getting stained.
I have this problem. I stay away from aluminum deodorant all winter to slow down staining, but I HAVE to use it in hot weather.
Same!!!
Totally valid reason! I'm actually considering switching back for the same/opposite reason: the natural deodorants that work best for me stain my clothing even more than anti-perspirant does!
In my case anti persperant deodorant makes my armpit dark :
Thinking about it, I don’t think I’ve had many staining issues with natural deos if any! I switched because natural deos are much better smelling IMO but now I need to go examine all the armpits of my shirts 😂
I can't believe this is the first time in my adult life (literally, I've been hearing the aluminium causes breast cancer story since I started using deodorant at 13) that someone has debunked this, or that I've heard scientific literature which debunks it. I've always considered myself a critical thinking person, so it's really eye-opening to me that I got sucked into this one for such a long time.. after being on the "natural health" and "clean beauty" and "toxin-free lifestyle" trends for a number of years, it does really start to make you feel betrayed by the people who sell you the expensive stuff that is supposedly "healthier" for you
The benefits may vary for people but the science is not on the side of cheap deodorants with harmful ingredients.
“Natural’ deodorants gave me the worst underarm rashes that were so itchy and painful. Back to my old faithful Dove 😍👏🏼
Most use baking soda, which is probably what’s causing the rash!
Me too my entire armpit turned red burned , swelled up and itched I was in agony so I switched to dove dry spray.
Same thing with me except I didn’t get the rashes but it was so itchy and it burned
I didn’t knew about this myth, interesting to hear it, I switched from regular base aluminum deodorant to a natural one since I couldn’t figure out the reaction that happened between my sweat and the compounds in the product that made my t-shirt to have ugly yellow stains really hard to get out.
Try using panoxyl benzoyl peroxide wash & leave sitting under your arms while you shower
Thank you for being a trustworthy (and entertaining) resource 🥰🥰🥰
thank you for giving actual science a fighting chance with your work, it can be so intimidating as a non-expert civillian to look at the studies and try to understand why and how they come to certain conclusions, the relevant context to interpret the study being made to begin with!! its much better for my anxiety to comprehend the information than just avoiding everything ever just in case the rumor mill is right
I needed this myth buster. So much shaming goes on in marketing for "clean" products. Thank you!
Biologist here,👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️great job debunking this old wives tale.

Thank you for this exhaustive video. I've heard doctors say that aluminium is safe, so I wasn't worrying about it, but it is always helpful to have such an understandable and argumentative explanation.

They're the most effective.
try to get out the stains in a baking soda/vinegar wash... helped me a lot of times i t past😊✌🏻
Can you believe I'd been putting baking soda on my armpit for 5 years before my armpit started to flake, itch, and darken because I believed anti perspirant deodorants were bad 😭😂

Bless your heart! I couldn’t get past 3 days with baking soda. Gave me a horribly painful rash.
Yeh keep on putting the wholesome crap from deodorants in one of the most absorbent areas of your body then.
I have hated that research group ever since the paraben thing. They keep pumping out badly done studies that are constantly refuted.
What kind of diet changes did you make?
As a dude, I never thought I’d find myself on a beauty science channel, but this is an incredible video. I really appreciate that you looked some of the counter evidence and exception cases at the end :)
Omg, this video is so necessary and EVERYONE needs to see it!! Thanks again for the amazing education you give us
As a radiologic technologist who does mammograms (as are I think all of not a good percentage of us performing exams, are also women) let me make this clear.
Don't mistake that for disinterested or uncompassionate.)
So I could see how not explaining where we see it in imaging and the fear mongering of short form TikTok videos can be a huge factor.
I'm sharing this with my coworkers so we don't continue to spread misinformation in an attempt to be part of a bigger system of healthcare that does care about women's health.

Thank you so much! Have you ever considered re-naming your channel "The Voice of Reason"?
Wow thanks for the video. Been wondering why my mineral salt deodorant said it doesn’t contain aluminium chlorohydrate and now I know why
For me, it is not about the agent - in this case aluminum - it is a about the fact that sweating is normal, is needed. Can clogging the sweat glands routinely be good, you think?
i was just thinking about this last week and wondering what your take on it was omg!! thank you for the upload and all the work you do
Correlation =/= causation. Isnt this like rule #1 when looking at test results and evidence?
No, correlation = causation most of the times in these kind of subjects. What else do you think it means
Hurray!
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience are you for real? 😂
So funny, saw a Lumē advertisement just before the video started. 😆
I tried using more natural deodorants and I just can’t anymore.
I switch to non aluminum in the winter but I get way too funky in summer. Dove Invisible has 11.4%aluminum which is pretty low.
Thank you for this video! I was wondering about this claim and if it was true or not. Great video as always!!!
Oh brilliant!!! Thank you for this! Mostly because those 'natural' deodorants suck
Keep pushing the narrative! 🎉
Thank you I was just thinking about if the "aluminum is linked to breast cancer" claim was false! 😁
This video is perfect! You went over all the misconceptions. Thank you
I use aluminum free deodorant but only because I realized that I really didn't give a crap about sweat (like you mentioned at end). But this was super interesting!!
I don't use any deodorant at all haha 😅
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Honestly most days I don't either! 😁
Thank you, I was shopping online and was bombarded by “natural” “aluminum free” blah blah. Was wondering what the hell it was all about and had me indecisive but now I can shop easy.
I`m in love with your channel and your approach to these subjects!
Im binge watching and it brought me hereee. I learned a LOT. Thank youuu! 💕💕
Paracelsus noted 500 years ago already that the dosage makes the poison, but some people still have to catch up...
Yeh and a lifetimes of exposure to these chemicals is culminative, you need to catch up.
How about washing arm pits daily with soap. And shave them. That hair there is too good place for bacteria.
i think Michelle mentioned in another video that chemical exfoliants work? I can't remember exactly what she said though :) chemicals that are acidic (normal deodorants aren't) are often better smell neutralisers, hence why a lot of natural deodorants have things like lemon and citrus
@@pipancla oh okay so would a natural deodorant be a better option?
What about products you don’t apply every day like carpe anti-perspirant
Brilliant video!! So clear, concise and unbiased. Very hard to find atm ❤🧠
Ever since you discussed using AHA/BHA as deodorant in an article I've never looked back. Pretty useful too since 90% of commercial deos irritate or burn my underarms. My pits have never been this stink-free, ingrown-free and smooth. 😘
What product do you use?
@@perry6660 Stridex 2% BHA acne pads. They're pretty cheap and effective. I won't use them on the face though since it has fragrance and menthol. But I've tried using my other AHA toners and serums too and they also work just not as cheap lol.
Thanks for the video Michelle! Can you please do one on parabens? I know you’ve done it in the past, but a full video in this sort of format would be awesome 😊
Honestly bless you for easing our minds with your ethos 💋
Thank you for this, Michelle!
Could you do a review of the LUMI products that work as deodorants?
What about people who suffer from Hidradenitis suppurativa? Are antiperspirants going to make HS worse or is that a myth? I hope you’ll see this comment. I love your work 🥰
