I think that this character is more important than we sometimes think. Although he seems like a joke, in the life, he was deadly, even though he was probably considered a joke during his life He reminds me of King Herod in "Jesus Christ Superstar." It was the first part I ever had. I had grown up in a very religious environment. The kings of Israel during that period had always been portrayed as deadly. My director had insisted that I play the part as the "comic relief." I disagreed. Our faculty advisor made us present our cases to support our view. I think the director thought that I was wasting his time. After I presented my sources, he sort of brushed it off as fundamentalist drivel. The faculty member didn't. He treated our arguments with equal respect. Afterwards, he said that we were both right. He said that was why this character was so important. I think that is the same with King George. A lot of these rulers are viewed as jokes, but they were deadly.
That is one of the brilliant moments in this performance. His whole demeanor illustrates how dangerous these monarchs were. And how it was difficult to determine which ones were truly bonkers.
