After looking into the re-release and remakes... The one that can't be played on a modern console, unless you have the anniversary edition , will be Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair. That makes me mad & upset.
Strictly what games? Aw man i wanted to buy it at gamestop. I didn't even get Vendetta from gamestop.
So I got lucky to grab the anniversary collection for the switch early. But i am getting tired of these limited releases. I feel like I am always managing my purchases because if you miss out you have buy from eBay with triple prices.

It's almost becoming a full time hobby just trying to keep track of all these "limited" releases... who's releasing what, when, if there are any version differences, etc.
Kinda makes me want to just hack my Switch and be done with the insanity that physical gaming/collecting is becoming. As physical media slowly fades away this kind of stuff will only get worse.
Unfortunately we are fighting an uphill battle as the publishers just want to sell us digital. With physical Switch games being so collectible you’d think they’d understand the market and release those cartridges. I never experienced the so called FOMO before the Switch came out and I feel it only going to get worse.
This limited edition crap began with horror movies back in the VHS days and unfortunately it has crossed over to videogames, records/vinyl, toys, etc. and I hate it I could never stand it. I would pick the compilation with more games of course. Interesting topic and cool video Ron!👍
Concerning the mention of a digital edition of the anniversary version there is no clear info at this time. The statement I saw was that Bliss Brain, the SLG Japanese partner will release a digital collection at a later time. Nothing specific. But regardless if you wanted the 21 game collection as a physical copy SLG is the only option.
I think this will go the same way as the Space Invaders release. ININ had Space invaders Forever physical and digital( 4 games). It was 29.99 at launch. Strictly Limited had the Invincible collection with all the Space Invaders game (English release of the Japanese collection). I didn’t get a chance to even pre-order it. A few months later, there was eventually a digital release, so I imagine this will happen the same way with the Wonder Boy collection. Love your channel, reviews, and presentation. Definitely my go to place for retro/rare releases, and general info for modern video game collecting!
Strictly Limited did the same thing with the Space Invaders collection. Their release contained more games than the other releases.
It was also much more expensive that the other releases. They waited until the final patch was deployed before the cart went into production. The Japanese release had 10 games on the cart that gives a prompt to download Arkanoid Vs. Space Invaders for free. That's what makes these limited prints special. The final patch with any and all DLC is on the cart.
Strictly Limited hasn’t even shipped out Cotton yet. My faith in them is low at this point.

Meh asha in monster world had original only in physical and sega genesis collection already has two. 5:48 summed up vid. Timestamps would have helped the vid.
They did this with the Turrican package also. I’ve been waiting two years for the strictly limited version collector’s edition. I hate Strictly Limited Games. They take waaay too long to get their stuff out. I refuse to order from them again.

I didn’t even hear about this collection until now, and I’m not going to piss money away on the one collecting with 4 games knowing there was a much better deal from SLG. I love Wonder boy and it was the first game I ever played was back when I was a kid. Hope they release more Switch copies in the future.
I'm with you in not even knowing either version of this collection was even a thing until this video. I also feel that the version with only 4 games comes off as a waste of a release since the other versions of these same 4 games actually do have differences that make them also worth playing.

From the business model, they do this as an “guaranteed sale”. That’s especially true when the version has exclusive games or game content. They sell through the super limited editions and that covers their cost and gives them a bit of a profit margin. The sales after that are all icing. Not defending them just pointing out why.
Agreed. It’s crap to do these things in such limited quantities. The original WB happens to be my favorite games. I passed cause I own the collection essentially via the JPN PS2 Sega Ages release. I did order Returns Remix from them, and it’s gonna take forever to receive.
Stop these practice with not buying them. That will tell them to change. We all can emulate so it's not like we loose anything... why things need to be limited? It's just to give them more money and hype. Evil business.

Thanks for this video. I've been collecting the recent Wonderboy releases on Switch and PS4 (Dragons Trap remake, Asha remake, Monster Boy) and had no idea these new collections were even happening. Sounds like they really dropped the ball with the wider release.

I'm sure it is literally out of Inin's hands to release the 21 game version. Obviously SLG got an exclusive deal, but what I really wonder is why Inin is even bothering with spending the money on releasing a vastly inferior version at this point?

Hard pass unless the additional ports are made unlockable. I already have Super Wonderboy, Sega Ages Wonderboy in Monsterland and the Switch remake of Wonderboy III. I’ve also had a repro cart of Monster World IV for years as well as the Genesis mini.
Here's a paragraph from the original email alert I had about this...'This extensive collection of Wonder Boy titles as a boxed version will only be available at Strictly Limited Games! This is a worldwide exclusive boxed release - there will not be any other physical release of equal completeness. Our Japanese partner Bliss Brain will provide a digital version of this amazing collection - more on this will be announced at a later date.'
So...apparently there will be a digital release at some point via Bliss Brain, but they're not ready to give a release date yet.
They could've atleast made the 4 Game collection 10 dollars or smthn on Digital.
I didn't even know there was another version to the strictly limited release. Though they're so bloody slow, we might get it by the time the PS7 is released :D
But I would have loved a complete collection, like the addition of the Activision home computer ports of wonder boy and monster land. Though I've never seen that happen before so had very little hope. But Microsoft owns them now, so if there's an Xbox release?

The shaders are impressive. I'm a shader guy and love tweaking my shaders and bezels. Pretty awesome how easy they make it for people to get the crt look that they want.

Only heard of the anniversary version earlier today, at least there'll be a digital release eventually it sounds like. Loved Asha in Monster World so was looking forward to supporting InIn and more of their Wonder Boy efforts but this is an odd initial plan for the collections. Should've all been one package from the start. Will keep my ears the streets when it goes digital
If someone was lucky enough to get in on the anniversary collection they now have the privilege of waiting a very long time to actually receive their copy. So considering that, I'm actually kinda happy to just have the regular $30 version..

Its only slightly better than the physical-only releases that sometimes happen these days. At least digital gets something this time. Just not very much.

The only game on the SLG version I was interested in was Monster Lair, unfortunately they didn't include the superior pc engine version with added content. I would be happy to get the regular release instead at a fraction of the cost.
Ordered Cotton and Turrican Vol 1 & 2 from Strictly Limited in Nov of 2020...still haven't released yet. Even if they had more, I just can't pay them the money to wait 2-3 years, that is insane. I hope LRG releases the anniversary collection, we will at least be able to get a copy.
I ordered the SLG PS4 copy. I feel this selling of content in so many different variations is ridiculous. I seen that wonder boy 4 game release and had to ask why omit the others. Especially on basic edition copies. Collector Edition i understand. Just seems like waste of opportunity to the licensor to make more profit. Not the whole SLG and LRG stuff is truely getting out of hand. Both take forever to ship and seem to offer a similar or equal variation that all of sudden shows up on amazon. I think it sucks but i just roll with it while physical editions are still an option. They day it all goes digital im probably done gaming.
I got the collectors edition from Strictly Limited. I love art books. Everything i buy from Strictly Limited is collectors edition. They make the best most awesome looking quality boxes. With magnet lock on the flap. Their great. I've got a ton of them. Recently they've started coming in even bigger boxes which are pretty awesome their selves. Like the Turrican Anthology CE came in a big black box with Turrican written on it.

I feel these not cancellation policies should be illegal as well. They didn't give you anything. As long as it takes them to decide on manufacturing you could be at a point of just cancel it. Amazon released the samething through another publisher. Streets of rage 4 proved that.

I've never played any of the Wonderboy games. I have pre-ordered online. The four games included in the collection is fine by me. Who knows which way it goes whether or not I get on with the platformer.
If I wanted the fuller version if I played the game back in the day I would have paid extra. So the cheaper version suits me. Excellent viewpoint video as always.
I never know about these games before they're sold out. I'd love to know how anyone finds out there's a physical release, has the money to buy it and secures an order.
You can get email alerts from the sites themselves, or follow them on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to be aware of latest releases as soon as they come up, and you usually have at least a couple of days to decide on buying them before they sell out. Whether or not you actually have the spare cash at the time you need it is a different matter though.
I follow a lot of limited publishers on twitter and in some cases they are the ones pursuing some of these niche classics, they make their pitch to the devs and maybe the devs wanted some extra cushion by being able to go retail, in which the result of said retail release is a lesser version to allow limited publishers to sell their superior version, kinda a win win business wise.
I hate these companies doing the same crap with physical releases every time. It’s either but it now or pay twice as much later. Smh 🤦♂️

Couldn't explain it better. I wouldn't mind if they made the ports exclusively to the limited edition, but making both Monster Lair and Dragon's Trap exclusively to the limited edition really puts be in the wrong way.

I Bought the collectors edition. Although I fully agree with you on the normal version vs the limited version. I dont like that they did that. And to be fair they did not have to do it! The collectors edition, to me, is worth the extra money. It has a great history/art book and a physical soundtrack. The other extras as nice to have but those two already make it worth my purchase.
Before I found out about the collectors edition I was thinking of buying the regular version. Until I found out about the limited version that was sold out. I Would not have bought the normal version if the collectors edition was sold out.

Isn't Dragon's Trap a remake of WB3?
@@skeletankmcgraw7343 There are two WB3s, WB3: Monster Lair & WB3: Dragon Trap. The re-release of Dragon Trap is a remake of the original WB3: Dragon Trap. I was confused as well, & had to research. The Two WB3 titles is due to some kind of localization confusion.
WB III: Monster lair is available on the Genesis Collection.
I wouldn't mind this so much if SLG did an open preorder for the physical, and made a digital available for those not interested in the physical. Artificial or manufactured scarcity is a huge detriment to the gaming industry snd something I wish would just disappear forever.
Where I live normal resellers have started holding back even some regular collector's editions that aren't from the limitation mafia, as well as games they perceive as popular with collectors, often marking them up way beyond what they bought them for. A $50 version of a retro game with a nice edition is sold for $250 because they get away with it. Of course it makes sense financially when you can make a lot more money selling one copy than five.
This situation basically reminds me of the Turrican collections. At first the main digital release was only four games and you had to get a limited physical release if you wanted the full series (including alternate versions of several games).
Then, just recently, those limited versions got put on the eShop.... and now I kick myself for having bit the bullet and bought the earlier release simply because I assumed it was all I was ever gonna get. I am NOT making the same mistake with Wonder Boy. (Though it helps that the only games in this series I don't already own in some form are the original and Monster Lair).
A Wonder Boy collection especially is seemingly kinda silly, I mean most of the games either already have ports or remakes on modern platforms anyway--off the top of my head: Sega Ages WB in Monster Land, Asha in Monster World, The Dragon's Trap....
Picked up Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom in a sale two weeks ago (grew up as a Nintendo kid so only knew about the Wonder Boy series as "that SEGA version of Adventure Island") and then got extremely confused when I looked up the other available WonderBoyMonsterLand titles on the Switch... a collection with four games, a limited collection with twenty-one versions of six games, a remake of the first game, a port of the second game, and three modernised remakes. From what I can tell, the 21-versions-of-6-games collection will be released digitally at some point and not in some dumb limited time only capacity. Until that happens I guess I'll just stick to the modernised remakes.
Darn! Monster land on the sega master system was my second video game when i was little. Guess im skipping this one, the arcade version looks so weird to me. Thanks for the video!
At worst this should be available digitally but many of these should be available in stores, in the UK it's even worse with limited Run as you have a big shipping charge before even considering buying and we even see big franchises like Castlevania locked behind them

My problem is all four of these games have had a modern remake. All great games. And all were released physically on Switch, originals with their remakes, except Wonder Boy.

Area 2 round 1 on the original wonderboy in this game I CAN NOT make the jump off the cloud onto the ledge.It’s impossible.I’ve had the original on a physical big arcade machine and it was never like this.The clouds seem further apart than normal.
Thoughts on this?

Is it just me or are the controls on the original wrong? Run and throw has always been the same button. Here it’s split up and there’s a button for speed, throw and jump. Takes some getting used to.

I bought the Pocky & Rocky LE because I didn’t care value waiting, but for anything you don’t want to wait for the limited editions are stupid (unless you’re into buying two copies of current games which I think is a ridiculous practice).
I always got confused with wonder boy and adventure island master higgins.
I've been looking forward to this release, but had no idea they were doing it this way. Anniversary not being available digital is a crime. SLG has made this easy for me. I'll just emulate these games and not buy any version of Wonder Boy Collection.

Don't trust these compilations. They're usually quantity over quality with input lag. I bought the Arcade Archives Wonderboy from the Japanese PSN and the Sega Ages Wonderboy In Monster Land on Switch, instead.

Super annoyed by stuff selling out quickly on limited run games with no restocking. Maybe that's the point? I just wanted Virtual Boy Works by Jeremy Parish and it disappeared so quick.
This is a big problem with video games. This crap doesn’t really happen with movies or cd. Imagine a music or movie release that comes out physical with limited versions having extra content within the movie or music. Only thing that comes to mind is that wu tang album.

I love the Wonderboy series. I was never a fan of limited run games just because if you miss out YOU MISS OUT.
At that point I'd rather not even bother with them and just get what I can. If i can't I'll emulate when i want to play a certain game.

There is probably going to be an adventureisland collection to witch is the sequel to wonder boy.
Well, not exactly a sequel. Adventure island initially was supposed to be a port of Wonder Boy.. but the rights were sold to Sega so Hudson couldnt use the name and same characters so they changed it up a bit. But yeah after the first Adventure Island it diverted from the Wonder Boy games becoming more its own thing. But id definitely be down for a Adventure island collection with all the ports and sequels.
The super deluxe version needs to let players play as madlittlepixel.

Strictly Limited games annoy me only releasing a certain amount of copies. Surely they must realise the demand for such titles would be high and so they would produce accordingly. People grab all the copies as soon as they get advertised and the next minute you have to pay inflated prices on eBay if you want a copy. They don’t really care about the consumer more about money knowing as soon as they release a certain quantity they will all be sold within a limited time. Rant over
