I love how your hatred for the word "shmup" has endured through all these years 😂 thanks for another great episode, Game Sack is a guaranteed solid watch.
One I've only heard recently is "STG," which is a term used in Japan for "shooting game" apparently. I like shoot 'em up as it fits well with beat 'em up.

Just so you know, Street Fighter 2 on Game Boy DOES have character endings, but you don't get them if you're playing on a low difficulty. This happened in other ports of Street Fighter 2 and even other fighting games like the SNES version of Killer Instinct.
I had played the SNES version of SF2 in a department store. Loved it. So when I heard about it being released for my trusty Amiga, I had to have it. Pre-ordered it. Two month allowance used for it. Played it to death. Overlooked all the flaws. I had SF2!!! ;)
Me too! I got a pirated version of SF II for the Amiga back then and although it wasn't as good as the console versions I had a lot of fun with. I bought Mortal Kombat for the Amiga in the department store and I also thought it was an OK version of the aracade game. I never regretted my purchase. The Amiga ports of those fighting games may have not aged well. But back in the old days there was nothing like it, so the standards were lower.
And the sad thing is, static screen shots for that port look pretty good. Its only seeing it in motion that you know you were duped. I bet they fooled a lot of people
Joe have you considered doing An episode dedicated to the worst attributes of certain games? Worst screen tearing, draw distances, worst parallax, sound, Etc? It would be informative to show us the juxtaposition of the great when shown the worst.
I'm actually kinda disappointed that during the Mercs segment, we didn't get an explosive, adrenaline-pumping, screaming-at-the-top-of-your-lungs, "TAAAAAATTTEEEE MOOOOODDDDEEEE!"
the last part was the funniest part and with a controller you’re not only controlling the console but also at what’s happening on screen and you’re also controlling your mind as well, hence the name CONTROLLER🤣🤣
The SFII bootleg from Korea is a surprisingly good port. The NES port of Alien Syndrome developed by Sanritsu was released in Japan by Sunsoft. Ports of NES games on PC were usually crap.
Music in the SF2 port for Amiga kicks ass even to this day! Us, Slavs, didn't know any better back then, so we played this choppyness like crazy! Fun times. 😂
Mercs was such a great game for the genesis. I always thought it was a 2 player game but it was only single player. Played every mode with every weapon on every difficulty. It was fun.
I still own the Street Fighter 2 PC (DOS) game and used to play it on my 386DX PC. As far as I remember there are sound fx using Soundblaster card. The sounds resembling kicks and punches though are just white noises and one note synth sounds produced by the YM3812 chip. No PCM sounds at all.
You should really do an episode on the PC-Engine ports. There are some truly head scratching ports on that system. Shinobi: No bonus stages, no power ups, no meele attack Altered Beast: The single most delayed jump in video game history Chase HQ: Your answer to the question "can a driving game ever be to fast?" Thunder Blade: Does this game have a good port? Ninja Gaiden: a 16bit era game that has scrolling rutines worse than a zx spectrum game. The NewZealand Story: It's missing 4½ levels.. how can you be short 4½ levels in a 20 level game?!?!?!?!?!? Raiden: A lauded game for it's time but take a look at the stage 6 boss compared to the arcade and think to yourself. How are you expected to dodge that with a player ship that moves slower than the arcade version?
My favorite part is when Joe poopoos the word “shmup.” I love shooters, and “shmup” sounds so dumb. Sounds like a beverage. “I got a jar of peach shmups if you want any.”
The SNES Madden 93 has crazy 2 player co-op glitch. If you run a certain fullback run play, and have 2p control the fullback, the fullback can streak straight to the post. The qb will do a spin as if to hand off the ball, but then throw a 100% accurate, unblockable pass. Guaranteed big play.
Not only am I exceptionally high IQ, I'm also a good dancer, plus I happened to notice you've already done Alien Syndrome in PPP 2. So does that make this video a port?
I will forever be an apologist for the master system version of Alien Syndrome. I didn’t even know there was an arcade game when I asked for it on my 10th birthday, I was sold on the box art that reminded me of ALIENS which I was crazy about. I feel single screen vs scrolling works very well for this game. Game is challenging but fair, and boss fights are epic.
"Shmup to sound like an idiot" FINALLY someone says what I've been thinking for years! You're saving absolutely nothing verbally by saying this as an abbreviation of "shooter".
that Tec Toy's Street Fighter 2 Master System port was praised by Capcom here in Brazil. The guys from Capcom think that was a poor Mega Drive port, and Tec Toy showed that was a Master System port....Capcom aproved right away. (I'm not kidding at all).
No music on the SMS Mercs port? What the hell! Love watching these videos. Have you ever done one on games with alarm sounds when you're low on health? It'd be interesting to see which ones are annoying and which ones are somewhat tolerable lol
If you dealt with microcomputer games and not just bloody consoles, you would have a GOLD MINE for these videos. So many arcade conversions to the Amiga, Atari ST, and the 8-bit micros that were popular back then mostly in Europe (Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, C64) and America (Atari 8-bit), that you'd have an endless supply of craptastic conversions that tried to do more than was possible.
I mean, the Amiga and Zx Spectrum versions of SF2 were utter FILTH. The Game Boy version is the fucking Mona Lisa compared to those two. Also, the Master System version of that game? The attacks that you didn't know how to pull for that version, as well as the Amiga one, probably because the game used a system for attacks similar to what was usual in games before Street Fighter, as in the "keep the button pushed, then move the controller to one of the 8 directions, then release button" that you would find in games such as Yie Ar Kung Fu, Panza Kick Boxing or Budokan. Yes, I'm that old. I played those games.
11:18 that info is 100% incorrect. All characters have their endings (from SSF2) relatively intact in the GBY port. You can even hear every ending track in the games sound test in the Options menu. You have to beat the game at a difficulty of 3 or higher.
Since I never played the arcade version, I've never had any problem with the SMS port of Alien Syndrome. I actually enjoy it a lot. I like the mazes, the aliens, the ominous albeit repetitive music... Maybe it's because it's one of the first Master System games I owned in the 1990s, so nostalgia might play a role in this. Anyway, it took me 25 years to complete the game, some bosses are really brutal, and once you lose a life you are stuck with the standard weapon, which sucks, and at that point you might as well reset the game.
I’d probably get stuck, but it didn’t look too bad to be here. Honestly it feeling Zelda-y or metal gear-y with the scrolling doesn’t feel entirely like a bad thing.
I had the same experience. I never played the arcade version. I really enjoyed the SMS version for its ambiance, music, and challenge. Heck, I recently remixed the game's music recently since I like the game so much. 😊
as an old dos gamer, wish he talked how that the DOS version of SUPER STREET FIGHTER 2 is one of the best, if not the best port of the series, same goes for all MK games on dos.
Check out the C=64 port of Alien Syndrome... totally unique, with its own awesome music, sound effects, and faster pace. Every once in a while, a port turns out better than its original.
Ninja Gaiden NES, Contra NES, Bionic Commando NES, Turtles in Time SNES, Tekken Tag Tournament home consoles, and Soul Calibur Dreamcast are the most famous examples of this. Master System version of Ninja Gaiden also deserves credit. Other examples I can think of for now include; Rayman 2: The Great Escape Dreamcast; Actually the version that was always originally intended. Compared to the N64 and PC versions, this has got to be the most refined version of the game. Soul Calibur 2 home consoles: Polished up graphics compared to arcade and exclusive characters. Virtua Racing Switch: An actual rebuild that unlike arcade runs at 60fps (though objects you can collide into are rendered at 30fps). Later on the game was patched to give you the ability to make the in-game colors more arcade accurate. Daytona USA HD (Xbox 360/PS3): Graphically an improvement over the original arcade version and controls are a very accurate translation. Double Dragon GBA: Graphical improvements and suffers from less lag than arcade. Gradius 3 SNES: This one is debatable, but I personally see this as being better than arcade (which contrary to popular belief also has lag). The SNES version like the arcade version is tough, but is forgiving enough to be the more enjoyable experience at home. There's the unofficial Root origin/Origin patch that fixes the problem of lag and unlike the vanilla SA-1 patch doesn't make the bosses feel unusually aggressive. R-Type Deluxe Atari ST and Amstrad CPC 2012: Not compared to arcade, but they're better than their original counterparts on such systems. R-Type Dimensions EX: Runs very well and can switch between original graphics and new graphics real time. Mario Bros GBA: Alright, so this is more of a remake. Still, easily the best way to play Mario Bros hands down. Super Mario Bros Special 35th Anniversary: Unofficial version of Special running on the same engine as Super Mario Bros. Puts to shame the older versions. Prince of Persia SNES: Blew past the older versions with ease. Metal Slug X: Basically Metal Slug 2 on Metal Slug 3's engine and a few other touch-ups. YS Book 1 & 2 Turbografix 16: Include the first two games together and this version is terrific in its own right. Valis (Sega Genesis): More of a remake, but easily the best way to play the original Valis. Unlike the older versions, this one is actually decent. Race Drivin' Saturn: Easily runs faster than arcade version. Not an amazing game these days, but this is the best version to go with. Samurai Shodown V Special: What the original version should've been like. Doom Resurrection 32X: Easily a large improvement compared to the first official 32X version. Music is even almost as good as the SNES soundtrack rendition. Marble Madness FM Towns: Very accurate translation of gameplay and soundtrack is even better. Sonic 1 and 2 Whitehead: More so remakes, but they are easily superior compared to their original Genesis counterparts; especially with the Sonic 2 special stages looking less messy. As for unofficial versions; there's now Sonic 1 Forever: Expansion Pack and Sonic 2 Absolute: The Community Cut. Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic 3 AIR: Sonic 3 Complete has not only the individual versions of Sonic 3 and Sonic &Knuckles, but also Sonic3&Knuckles. As for Sonic AIR, it has more consistent 60fps performance and contains smaller gameplay touch-ups. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD; Higher resolution textures and the Wii version of the game is included as mirror mode. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: More consistent 1080ps 60fps performance and battle mode is closer to the past games. Also has more tracks than Mario Kart 8 thanks to DLC still being provided currently. Resident Evil 4 Wii and Ultimate HD version: Both versions have additional content. Wii version has actually well implemented controls and Ultimate HD on PC gives you access to mouse and keyboard. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence and True Director's Cut: Deadly Silence is the most polished gameplay wise (not including HD remake and its remaster) and even has a new mode than adds new puzzles and knife fights with zombies. As for the unofficial True Director's Cut; it restores content from previous builds of Resident Evil. Resident Evil REmake HD: A remaster of the remake that gives you the option of modern controls and is even more visually impressive. After Burner 2 Saturn: Include additional options not in arcade and gameplay is even a more accurate translation of gameplay than 32X port. As for an honorable mention that isn't necessarily better than arcade but stands strong on its own is Virtua Racing Deluxe 32X. Compared to Genesis port (which is a competent effort); this is visually notably better and has new content that is welcomed.
I mean the sprites are fairly large and well animated but the frame rate does look kind of choppy from what I saw in the video. I’ve never played it before so take it with a grain of salt

I bet they fooled a lot of people
'Outlawed in 16 states' made me chortle good. Another classic skit :)
Twice the piss and vinegar? Cant pass that up lol
Joe have you considered doing An episode dedicated to the worst attributes of certain games? Worst screen tearing, draw distances, worst parallax, sound, Etc? It would be informative to show us the juxtaposition of the great when shown the worst.
Yes finally another Piss Poor Ports! I love these videos.
This makes me smile on the toilet!
Ye Toilet Watch Squad
I'm actually kinda disappointed that during the Mercs segment, we didn't get an explosive, adrenaline-pumping, screaming-at-the-top-of-your-lungs, "TAAAAAATTTEEEE MOOOOODDDDEEEE!"
I was expecting it.
No idea why, but this is one of my fave subjects on game sack
the last part was the funniest part and with a controller you’re not only controlling the console but also at what’s happening on screen and you’re also controlling your mind as well, hence the name CONTROLLER🤣🤣
Joe hates Alien Syndrome on SMS so much he added it again lol
Yeah, that pretty much explains it. I'm surprised he didn't also bring up the NES version for comparison a second time.
Thanks for brining this up. I thought that I was going crazy, remembering that he already bashed that one.
Considering it's the Gameboy, I'd say Street fighter 2 was a pretty damn good port.
23:48 Mercs was also released in Brazil on the Master System.
Let me guess. Does the company rhyme with "Neck Boy" and come from a country where they levy heavy taxes about 5 times more than the games themselves?
I love shmup games. That being said thanks for reminding me about SF2 on snes. Its been years since I replayed my cartridge.
The SFII bootleg from Korea is a surprisingly good port.
The NES port of Alien Syndrome developed by Sanritsu was released in Japan by Sunsoft.
Ports of NES games on PC were usually crap.
I didn't think I'd spend my Sunday morning watching Joe show off his different sticks.
I was really expecting to see Steel Battalion’s joystick at the end. But nope, you zigged when I thought you’d zag. 😂
THanks for the vid! The outtro skits continue to be a complete hoot.
just sat down to take what feels like will be an extremely difficult BM, and saw this new episode. Thanks for easing my pain a little bit, Joe
difficult baby mamas are the worst
Same. It's 40 minutes later now, I hope it came out ok. Wish me luck!
@@JaredConnell thanks man, took some work and determination but finally expelled the evil within. Did it around the 12 minute mark
Water and fibre, my blocked-up friend.
Shmup is for shmucks! I'll die on this hill with you, Joe!
I love some Sack!!
Game, that is.
Good stuff Joe 🤘
Music in the SF2 port for Amiga kicks ass even to this day! Us, Slavs, didn't know any better back then, so we played this choppyness like crazy! Fun times. 😂
Mercs was one of the games my dad got with our Sega back in the day.
I sometimes forget how impressive the Genesis / Mega Drive could sound with the right composer
More like "Con-Troll" lol love the skits every time
Mercs was such a great game for the genesis. I always thought it was a 2 player game but it was only single player. Played every mode with every weapon on every difficulty. It was fun.
The control stick for the Master System is truely bizarre lol!
A truly awful controller.
You've got some awesome series on this channel dude, stoked to see another P.P.P. episode
You down with ppp yeah you know me!
lol... I loved that Sega Control Stick! I used one with my Commodore 64 for years. Durable and dependable!
The gameboy did have some good 8-bit renditions of the music from Street Fighter 2.
great jokes on this one
I chuckled at "jimmy cameron" and forgetting the word for vertical screen mode
Lol love how you picked the worst Joystick by far at the end 😅
Hi. Just quickly wanted to mention that Motor Raid can be played as an Arcade Game in the Judgement games... 😏😏😏
"Barlog wins", excellent!
With the intro on that first one I was expecting you to talk about a port of Green Dog I didn't know about.
You should really do an episode on the PC-Engine ports.
There are some truly head scratching ports on that system.
Shinobi: No bonus stages, no power ups, no meele attack
Altered Beast: The single most delayed jump in video game history
Chase HQ: Your answer to the question "can a driving game ever be to fast?"
Thunder Blade: Does this game have a good port?
Ninja Gaiden: a 16bit era game that has scrolling rutines worse than a zx spectrum game.
The NewZealand Story: It's missing 4½ levels.. how can you be short 4½ levels in a 20 level game?!?!?!?!?!?
Raiden: A lauded game for it's time but take a look at the stage 6 boss compared to the arcade and think to yourself. How are you expected to dodge that with a player ship that moves slower than the arcade version?
Isn't that Shinobi port also missing an entire set of levels?
Ah yes, the vertical screen mode, I think it was the "TATE ART GALLERY MODE!"
I'm late to the party, but that ending that culminated with the old ass SMS Control Stick cracked me up.
My favorite part is when Joe poopoos the word “shmup.” I love shooters, and “shmup” sounds so dumb. Sounds like a beverage. “I got a jar of peach shmups if you want any.”
Thunder Spirits and Madden really showing the SNES's lack of blast processing :v
Best retro game channel out there. Keep up the good work!
"Or 'shmup', if you want to sound like an idiot." lol... Entertaining as always!
Mercs on Genisis was fantasic, only missing the nultiplayer from the arcade.
Street Fighter II on the gameboy may have had a low framerate on purpose, as mitigation for the ghosting of the original GB screen.
"Shmup to sound like an idiot"
FINALLY someone says what I've been thinking for years! You're saving absolutely nothing verbally by saying this as an abbreviation of "shooter".
Nothing quite beat having to take a week off school to play streetfighter 2 on the amiga. Thw amount of discs and load times was terrifying
Good call on that Madden port for the SNES. I am so glad I only rented it when it came out, because it was just about unplayable.
i was hoping you mentioned the DOS street fighter 2. That game is one of the darker memories from my childhood
I guess Mercs was Capcoms answer to Ikari Warriors being they added drivable tanks
that Tec Toy's Street Fighter 2 Master System port was praised by Capcom here in Brazil. The guys from Capcom think that was a poor Mega Drive port, and Tec Toy showed that was a Master System port....Capcom aproved right away. (I'm not kidding at all).
at 15:48 dhalsim is excited to celebrate early
No music on the SMS Mercs port? What the hell!
Love watching these videos. Have you ever done one on games with alarm sounds when you're low on health? It'd be interesting to see which ones are annoying and which ones are somewhat tolerable lol
all of them and then none of them.
GAME SACK, GAME SACK, GAAAMMME SAAACKKKK!!!!
Best channel ever🎉
SHMUP YOU JOE!
21:36 The word escapes me as well. It's popular with vertical shmups.
The Gameboy Street Fighter II was still an absolute masterpiece compared to Mortal Kombat.
I have never understood how people say Alien Syndrome is based on the Aliens movie, they look absolutely nothing alike.
Joe finally making his feelings known on the term "shmup" - shots fired (no pun intended)
That remix of Dark Chronicle's (Cloud 2) Time is Changing is amazing 17:06
Check out the C=64 port of Alien Syndrome... totally unique, with its own awesome music, sound effects, and faster pace. Every once in a while, a port turns out better than its original.
Ninja Gaiden NES, Contra NES, Bionic Commando NES, Turtles in Time SNES, Tekken Tag Tournament home consoles, and Soul Calibur Dreamcast are the most famous examples of this. Master System version of Ninja Gaiden also deserves credit.
Other examples I can think of for now include;
Rayman 2: The Great Escape Dreamcast; Actually the version that was always originally intended.
I was actually a little impressed with the Game Boy version of Street Fighter II.
I mean the sprites are fairly large and well animated but the frame rate does look kind of choppy from what I saw in the video. I’ve never played it before so take it with a grain of salt
I watch every video you put out but I only hit like for the end skits.
im glad you actually showed street fighter 2 on the PC. so many retro game channels ignore PC/DOS as if it never existed. I hate that shit. dos games were an integral part of my childhood. as much as snes and nes was
If only they mentioned actually good stuff instead of PC ports of Megaman and Street Fighter.
I have always felt with the early days of portable gaming, rather than try and port street fighter, developers should have focused more on creating great games for a portable system.
Your videos are a treat, thank you
