“SHES DEAD BILLL!!! OH MY GOD!!” Never owned the game clearly I would have found this earlier in life if I did. I never owned a Saturn. But I had over 300 games mostly Japanese ones from a pawn shop that closed down

Retro gaming has been a big passion for me and its crazy to think just how long it's been since I followed the Channel when the CRT episode was posted and just how much of a constant the show and retro games have been. Saturn had an amazing library that really feels like a follow up to the 16 bit era with tons of gorgeous 2d titles. I’d love to see a ps1 video as well. As a sean seanson fan I know there are some real gems
I think the biggest problem with the Saturn version is that the additional content is crap and actually detracts from the rest of the game. The pregnant pauses when opening the menu screen were also incredibly annoying. The slow down I could actually live with.
Or just play the psp version which is superior in every way. Those couple of extra corridors in the Saturn weren't added in the other versions because they were unfinished and it shows.
The Saturn was the ultimate 2D powerhouse....at the dawn of the 3D era. If only it had come out a couple of years previous without all the Sega infighting and SegaCD and 32x nonsense.....(sigh) So many gems. I LOVE Elevator action 2, goofy names aside (Jad the Taff?? LOL) Dragon Force and Nocturne in the Moonlight (Symphony of the Night) almost as much as the 3D powerhouse titles like Panzer Dragoon Saga, NiGHTS into Dreams and Shining Force III (last game I bought for my Saturn) as well as the many MANY Japan only games highlighted here. Thank you for doing so! (Special thanks for highlighting Galactic Attack, one of the best pawn shop pickups I ever made and also Saturn Bomberman, both of my daughters' all time favourite game.)
Joe used Koyori in Sengoku Blade...a man of culture because I too used her and she gave me a lot of "feelings" during my younger years while playing as her.

There's an extensive graphical patch with English translation for he Saturn version of Castlevania Symphony of the Night that fixes all it's flaws and is amazing, one can burn that to a CD R and play it on a Saturn with a Psuedo Kai Cart or on PC with a Saturn Emulator, and is *very much worth playing*

Different times. Games weren't prohibitively expensive to make back then (and the industry was less corporate), so publishers could afford to take risks (and were generally more willing to do so).
I'm so glad i collected for the Saturn years and years ago, one of my all time favourite systems. The model one Saturn is still my favourite looking console, beautiful looking system.
So many great games here. I'm one of those diehard fans of Dragon Force. Once you get into the mechanics, it's hard to put down. Probably my favorite game on the Saturn. Also, Elevator Action Returns got a digital release on Switch and Playstation. Definitely worth checking out.

We tried a Christmas-ish episode once, but we found that seasonal episodes like that don't do very well outside of the season. So I try to make Game Sack so any episode can be watched at any time of the year without needing to be in a seasonal mood for it.
Reason I had a Saturn over Playstation or N64 was for the love of Capcom 2D fighting games and other SNK one's. Saturn was a 2D fighting games juggernaut
*Technically* Castlevania on PS1 was simulating 2D with 3D. Saturn could easily do it in true 2D, but that would require a new engine, and since the Saturn version was rushed, they basically did a 1:1 port on a completely different hardware. This includes all the PS1 visual assets that weren't optimised for Saturn's aspect ratio. Hence all the shortcomings.

The RAM carts never came outside of Japan, hence why the Saturn versions of the Capcom VS games were Japan exclusives (and were reduced to Street Fighter with assists on other platforms).
Darius Gaiden was probably the only actual good (not baseball) game I had for my Saturn. My mom just brought it home because she saw it had like sea creatures on the screenshots on the box and I was obsessed with the ocean. Thanks for reminding me of it

That Diehard Gamefan review that said the PSX SFA was better than the Saturn version because of the super shadow shading was so dumb. Especially because the Saturn version had them. Video game magazine misinformation campaigns were the true console wars.
Diehard Gamefan magazine was incredibly biased. I never did like their style. I was used to reading Nintendo Power, and EGM, because they seemed a lot better put together. Gamefan was always trying to be different from other magazines, but they were biased for the wrong reasons. This was the same magazine that had one of their reviewers saying the following in a 1993 review for Super Mario All-Stars, when giving it a lower score: “I believe it’s time to retire Mario for a more nineties character.” Retire an iconic character, who led Nintendo to early dominance? Yeah, that makes sense! 🙄 I held a personal grudge against them, for years, based on their questionable reviews. When their magazine ceased publishing at the end of 2000, I was actually laughing at their demise. As for as I was concerned, good riddance.
It is too bad 32-bit 2D games were kind of looked down on back in the day. But at the time almost everyone wanted 3D. I remember getting Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the N64 as a Christmas gift. When I booted it up I thought "Well this is kind of lame, it just looks like a Super Nintendo game" Nowadays those 2D games still look amazing while most of the 3D games of that era are almost unplayable they look so bad. Emulation helps PS1 3D games look better but on the original system many of them look awful.

So many beautiful smoothly animated sprites...like an eye massage, except not painful. Also I was on the fence about your shmup skills until I saw those Sengoku Blade dodges. Even a lot of hard core shmup UA-camrs whine about the speed of bullets in Psikyo games. Respeck.
As a Playstation boy, non of the 2D offerings impressed me that much. I felt that with some effort a PS1 port would be possible. That is untill i saw "Guardian Heros". and i knew my PS Could never pull that off..
This is the Saturn experience I thought we were going to have here. The forced polygons really destroyed my interest for a bit. That and I got a 71 Nova and put a big block in it 😁

Left in Japan: Saturn 2D edition. So many great games that only came out there. Thankfully a lot of them are still reasonably priced so pretty easy to get. SF Alpha 3 is a rare expensive one that's worth it to get though.... or just Rhea, Mode etc 😁
Joe, you should do an episode an the Taito F3! A few of these titles were developed for that arcade platform which is Taito's take on the Neo Geo MVS with cool, huge carts
TATE MODE!!! is back! Merry Christmas to me! Anyway, it's worth mentioning that plenty of these games are currently available on the Nintendo Switch. Some of the games are in the "Saturn Tribute" line, which means that they're Saturn games running in emulation.
Hey, Joe! I really missed Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Nightwarriors - Darkstalkers Revenge, which were AMAZING on the Saturn and didn't even need the 4 meg expansion cartridge! Still, great video... Cheers!
So many great 2D games, too many Japan only. "Mizubaku Adventure" could be cover in your vid too, this great port was made by VING, and they made a really good job to port 2D arcade game to the Saturn. Happy new year everybody and long life to Game Sack.
Regarding the skit at the end. Fun fact. The only thing I ever physically stole in my life was Fred Couples 36 great Holes of Golf for the 32x... I was maybe 10-11 years old at the time. In a now extinct store called "Best" I made up this bs excuse in my head that like no one would buy it cause it was golf, so it wasn't really hurting anyone. Back in the day they would actually have the game on a rack, as if it were a pair of socks. I opened the box in front of everyone and read the instructions over enthusiastically, I slyly (or so I thought) allowed the actual game cartridge to fall from the cardboard game box and into my jacket sleeve. Then I put the instructions back in the box, put the game back on the rack. I assumed the anti theft device couldn't scan through rubber, cause.. obviously... I'm an idiot. So I took off my shoe, removed the insole and stuffed the game in my shoe, put my foot back in the shoe, and limped around the store until it was time to go. I actually managed to enjoy the game. It's probably because it had a number of voice recordings which just BLEW MY IDIOT MIND back then. Hello dirty hary was my favorite NES game cause he clearly said "do no ya feel lucky, PUNK!" it's all I remember of the game (shaking head in shame) To those who managed to get to the end of this... I apologize.... K bye!

On Scud, level 2 has a very specific way that you have to traverse it or it will repeat itself. Its a maze, if you will.

Diehard Gamefan magazine was incredibly biased. I never did like their style. I was used to reading Nintendo Power, and EGM, because they seemed a lot better put together. Gamefan was always trying to be different from other magazines, but they were biased for the wrong reasons. This was the same magazine that had one of their reviewers saying the following in a 1993 review for Super Mario All-Stars, when giving it a lower score: “I believe it’s time to retire Mario for a more nineties character.” Retire an iconic character, who led Nintendo to early dominance? Yeah, that makes sense! 🙄
I held a personal grudge against them, for years, based on their questionable reviews. When their magazine ceased publishing at the end of 2000, I was actually laughing at their demise. As for as I was concerned, good riddance.

Imagine spending your time on games that don't even feature Fred Couples. Couldn't be me.
It is too bad 32-bit 2D games were kind of looked down on back in the day. But at the time almost everyone wanted 3D. I remember getting Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the N64 as a Christmas gift. When I booted it up I thought "Well this is kind of lame, it just looks like a Super Nintendo game" Nowadays those 2D games still look amazing while most of the 3D games of that era are almost unplayable they look so bad. Emulation helps PS1 3D games look better but on the original system many of them look awful.

2d Games on the Sega Saturn........nice!..except the knowledge of knowing there will never be a 2d, built from the ground up game, of that little blue--teacher harassing rascal...with all the tude of those great and awesome 1990s days to show off the might and mistery of the Sega Saturn!
So many beautiful smoothly animated sprites...like an eye massage, except not painful. Also I was on the fence about your shmup skills until I saw those Sengoku Blade dodges. Even a lot of hard core shmup UA-camrs whine about the speed of bullets in Psikyo games. Respeck.

As a Playstation boy, non of the 2D offerings impressed me that much.
I felt that with some effort a PS1 port would be possible. That is untill i saw "Guardian Heros". and i knew my PS Could never pull that off..

This is the Saturn experience I thought we were going to have here. The forced polygons really destroyed my interest for a bit. That and I got a 71 Nova and put a big block in it 😁

God 90s xmas's were the best - getting the saturn with sega rally vf2 wipeout destruction derby vf1 daytona and demodiscs was awesome back then. Best xmas ever.

Left in Japan: Saturn 2D edition. So many great games that only came out there. Thankfully a lot of them are still reasonably priced so pretty easy to get. SF Alpha 3 is a rare expensive one that's worth it to get though.... or just Rhea, Mode etc 😁

Joe, you should do an episode an the Taito F3! A few of these titles were developed for that arcade platform which is Taito's take on the Neo Geo MVS with cool, huge carts

Anyway, it's worth mentioning that plenty of these games are currently available on the Nintendo Switch. Some of the games are in the "Saturn Tribute" line, which means that they're Saturn games running in emulation.
Imagine a better Secret of mana on the Saturn, or smw 2 yoshis island, SNES still king of 2d imo, saturn had the power but lacked the library sorry.
One game you forgot to mention is Wolf Fang! A nice shooter!
The Saturn was home to so many awesome 2D titles. Stupid Sony with their "2D is out of date" mantra. PS was home to fuggly 3D by comparison.

I really missed Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Nightwarriors - Darkstalkers Revenge, which were AMAZING on the Saturn and didn't even need the 4 meg expansion cartridge!

So many great 2D games, too many Japan only. "Mizubaku Adventure" could be cover in your vid too, this great port was made by VING, and they made a really good job to port 2D arcade game to the Saturn. Happy new year everybody and long life to Game Sack.

Regarding the skit at the end. Fun fact. The only thing I ever physically stole in my life was Fred Couples 36 great Holes of Golf for the 32x... I was maybe 10-11 years old at the time. In a now extinct store called "Best" I made up this bs excuse in my head that like no one would buy it cause it was golf, so it wasn't really hurting anyone. Back in the day they would actually have the game on a rack, as if it were a pair of socks. I opened the box in front of everyone and read the instructions over enthusiastically, I slyly (or so I thought) allowed the actual game cartridge to fall from the cardboard game box and into my jacket sleeve. Then I put the instructions back in the box, put the game back on the rack. I assumed the anti theft device couldn't scan through rubber, cause.. obviously... I'm an idiot. So I took off my shoe, removed the insole and stuffed the game in my shoe, put my foot back in the shoe, and limped around the store until it was time to go. I actually managed to enjoy the game. It's probably because it had a number of voice recordings which just BLEW MY IDIOT MIND back then. Hello dirty hary was my favorite NES game cause he clearly said "do no ya feel lucky, PUNK!" it's all I remember of the game (shaking head in shame)
