    I've been following Dr. Ellie Phillips' advice of swishing 1/5 of a teaspoon of crystals, 5 times a day. I've also been following her Complete Mouth Care System. It's been almost 4 weeks and I have no plaque at all, my heat/cold sensitivity is gone, and I can see an old gum injury growing back. I'm excited to go to the dentist next month!

      That's great. There is one suggestion she gives though that is detrimental. She tells people to not floss. That is honestly dangerous advice, which makes it seem like she doesn't understand the actual purpose of flossing. To have good oral health for most people, they will need to floss or do some flossing alternative.

      @@vivacristorey4363 I am not sure about this. She believes that it's fine to floss, as long as done properly. Some people might floss incorrectly, not gently enough, get more issues than benefits. She doesn't hate flossing, just thinks that there are other strategies and factors that are more crucial to dental health success. I've started her system a few months ago - on Listerine it says " 5x more effective than floss at reducing plaque"

    Those crystals can be put into any container to become just as portable as the gum or mints. Just keep them dry - good lid or flip closure. Drop it in a purse or pocket and go. The crystals ARE cheaper, and you really only need 3-5 minutes.

    A great, fun video. I love using Xylitol as a post eating/drinking rinse now, and it has improved my mouth health.
    You could always take your Xylitol gum to the bathroom and spit the first few mouthfuls out in the sink to reduce injestion ✨
    I also love foraging Pine sap to use as a gum. I have Pine trees in my neighborhoods here. ...If you try this, just know the consistency of the sap is important for spotting a good gum-friendly piece (old vs new sap), and hot water can melt it all over your teeth (feels a mess but removable with oil), and cold water hardens it. It's a wonderful and healthy, and free, gum.

    I would respectfully mention that it would be important to know if the corn xylitol is processed from gmo corn? I think that is important to protect others with that info. I got an answer from Zellies - it is: Thank you for your interest in Zellie's and the sourcing of our Xylitol!
      When it comes to our xylitol selection, we have two main goals: 1) use high-quality, high-purity xylitol from a trusted source and 2) source the xylitol that works best for our products (ie. texture, consistency, reliability). With those goals in mind, the xylitol we use in Zellie's comes from different sources depending on the product.
      For our mints, because of the way the mints are pressed, it is very important to find the best powdered xylitol. We have found this from a non-GMO corn derived xylitol. It is from a very reputable company and the product is very reliable and is tested multiple times for purity. It is a fantastic product! And for any worries about corn, the xylitol is extracted from the corn husks, and after it is extracted, there are no corn proteins left in the final xylitol product. It is just pure xylitol! Our mints are made in British Columbia, Canada.
      For our gum, we source our xylitol from a company that uses Birch hardwood and this is from the US or Austria/Finland -- depending on supply. And just like with our mints, the final xylitol product is tested multiple times for purity. Our gum is made right here in the USA.
      There are a lot of marketing pushes out there alluding that one source of xylitol is better than another. What is most important to us (& we believe to our customers) is that the source of the xylitol is a trusted company and that the final xylitol product, whether from corn or hardwood, is a high-quality, high-purity xylitol.
      And, no, our products are not Certified Organic. However, they are non-GMO.

    I think the crystals are better:
    1. The gum often makes my mouth a bit raw
    2. The mints sometimes feel like too little in effectiveness, unless I take a few.
    With the crystals, I take about a quarter teaspoon after a meal and swish for a few minutes. I only do this at home. Outside, I use the gum or mints.

      I wonder if the source of the xylitol makes a difference? There are corn-based xylitol crystals, mixes (such as the Krisda brand he presents here), and pure birchwood. Also, too, if it's organic, i.e. pesticide-free. I'm sensitive to pesticides and corn so I would have to get the organic birchwood version. Which version did you use?

      @@Kaz-fb9lzIt's apparently good for the gut, but now that I'm learning there are different sourced types of xylitol, I'm beginning to wonder if it depends on the source. I have not personally read the studies, so I can't verify, but I imagine the source type (along w/starting amounts) would makes sense as to both efficacy and tolerance. Of course, I'm sure there are people out there who are allergic/sensitive to birchwood trees so will not tolerate it no matter what.

    Great info great explanation! I can basically vouch for everything he said being right on the money , I use a pre homemade Xylitol and water solution About 3 times a day after meals. I only swish around in my mouth for like 30 seconds Then brush after about 45 minutes to an hour later. Every other day I do oil pulling. This solution is also great if you wake up in the night with dry mouth And just swish a tiny bit around before you fall back asleep 💪 One thing I would mention is if you make a xylitol water solution. Only make it in 8 oz of water with 3 teaspoons. I find if I make a bigger batch after a couple days it starts to get this earthy smell 🤷

    Thanks Paul. The oral benefits are great! I know my tummy doesn't love it so not used as a sugar substitute.
    I live in the UK. Since discovering Dr Ellie's work, I had the sugar at home and now use approx one quarter teaspoon. Your video is great and reassured me about the amount I generally use.I tried using more. Not recommended to use more than half teaspoon. Even if you don't swallow, this crystal is very fine, dissolving fast and the molecular structure feels finer than salt. It doesn't take long to give lasting effectiveness.

    This is very helpful. One of the things that made me use the mints more often even when at home is because I swished the crystals around for 15 to 20 minutes each time - something that became impractical to do 4 to 6 times a day. Now that I know of the benefits of just doing it for five minutes I will return to try out the crystals again.
    I also appreciate the advice of waiting half an hour to 60 minutes between sessions. That is something I need to fix. Sometimes I eat and drink continuously for 4 to eight hours, so I was just having mints between snack and meal sessions. I'm sure it is better than nothing, but I will try to incorporate the waiting period.
    People might also be interested to know that making your own xylitol gum, although less convenient than buying, is not as difficult as you might think. It might be a way to save on the price or for those who have no access to it to make at home. It can also be a fun thing to do as a family.

      As for your Q, I recommend both oil pulling and Xylitol. Oil pulling to start the day, while Xylitol to maintain your mouth throughout the day after meals and certain drinks (coffee, alcohol, pop etc).
      In my first Xylitol experiment I tried it in the morning as a replacement for oil pulling and it didn't work that well. I then learned that it was because the Xylitol needed to feed the bacteria in its early growth phase. When I experimented with using it after meals, I felt the impact of it immediately. In the morning, the bacteria is already in its later growth stages (feeding and growing throughout the night) where it doesn't need to feed on Xylitol anymore.
      If you end up giving it a whirl, I would love to hear how it goes for ya! Cheers :D

    Even kf we spit the crystals out as sort of a mouthwash, Would the xylitol absorb through our mucus membranes in the mouth and get into our system, causing the heart issues that they think come from the higher doses?

    • @MasterEverydayLiving
      @MasterEverydayLiving  2 місяці тому +3

      So Xylitol is not as new as one would think and looking at the country that embraced it first (Finland), they have used it for decades (since the 70's) for oral hygiene at a consistent dosage. Xylitol treats is something that is a part of their lives (as early as kindergarden) and becomes a lifestyle staple they use to maintain good oral hygiene.
      Ofcourse with any of these substances, when you explore the use of it as a substance for consumption in large doses, the impacts on ones body changes. Personally I think that if you strictly use Xylitol for oral health and not as a sugar substitute, the amount that you consume (through your mouth exposure) is minimal and not as scary as one might think. I have been using it for over half a year now on a daily basis (Xylitol crystals after meals is what I now do) and haven't felt any of the heart or stroke side-effects.
      In the most recent 2024 Xylitol study, they looked at consuming 30g of Xylitol in one drink. Even that slight risk of heart attack and stroke might be too much for some people and they can choose to not use Xylitol for oral health. I also hope then that the same amount of scrutiny is put on other parts of their diet too like salt, sugar, fat, processed foods and so on, which also cause massive health issues when consumed in large amounts. At the end of the day, you need to explore and weigh the pros and cons for yourself.
      That's my 5 cents on the topic, hopefully it gives you some more food for thought on the topic. Cheers :D

      Having tried the gums, mints and crystals, they all have the same impact on my oral hygiene. The bigger difference I found is actually the side-effects. I would feel extremely bloated and have diarrhea if I overdid the gums or mints. Probably because I was consuming more of the Xylitol throughout the process of using those forms of Xylitol. I hardly get those side-effects with the crystals (just a slight bloatedness).
      Spry and Pur are two other gums that have versions with Xylitol in them that you might find. If you can't find those, I think you are stuck with the crystals!

    • @MasterEverydayLiving
      @MasterEverydayLiving  4 місяці тому +5

      I just looked up some of her videos and I would say the method of doing things is very similar. I use a bit less Xylitol and one vital aspect I didn't hear her mention was when you should be doing it.
      When I was experimenting with Xylitol in this video (ua-cam.com/video/iT0nPeHHO90/v-deo.html), I also tried to replace oil pulling but the way Xylitol works is that it feeds the bacteria early on in the growth phase to make it less sticky. Oil pulling is usually done the first thing in the morning when all the bacteria already at the end of its growth phase. This was something I figured out later when I was experimenting with the gums (ua-cam.com/video/UEuwTuKxUgw/v-deo.html).
      I do them both, just at different times. Oil pulling (with a bit of Erythritol) the first thing in the morning and Xylitol throughout the day after meals.

I have wondered though if I'm losing minerals because I also spit it out after I swish and it makes me produce quite a bit of saliva in a short period of time. Saliva is mineral filled (good for teeth!) and normally we swallow all our saliva, so we reintroduce the minerals to our system. But i do wonder by spitting out semi large amounts of saliva 5 times a day if I'm losing minerals with it. Have you any info or thoughts?

If the Xylitol is not processed properly, mixed with stuff or not put through proper scrutiny, I wouldn't buy it.

      I have a whole routine for oral hygiene these days. It's a mix of oil pulling with erythritol, Xylitol throughout the day and brushing teeth at the end of the day (which I am currently exploring with Hydroxyapatite toothpaste).
      When I tried Xylitol pulling for 15min in the morning instead of oil pulling, it didn't work that well because the bacteria wasn't at its early growth phase (since I was doing it the first thing in the morning), which is where Xylitol excels. Totally agree that it becomes kinda time consuming but sadly enough I think that is the price (in time) one has to pay to maintain good oral hygiene! I actually don't use Xylitol after breakfast (since I eat a simple overnight oats with nuts that doesn't cause plaque or buildup) and I minimize my big meals throughout the day making me only do Xylitol 1-3 times per day.
      Overlapping the tasks with things you already are doing is also an easy way to lessen that time. So if you take a shower in the morning, oil pull as well. Need some dishes cleaned after a meal? Plop Xylitol in and that 5min will breeze by :D

      I made a video on it as to why I think it still is okay to use Xylitol for oral hygiene over here - ua-cam.com/video/mGeTmH4v6Wk/v-deo.html
      In a nutshell, the studies look at consumption of Xylitol where participants consume 30g of Xylitol in one drink. That is a massive amount compared to how much one would be using for oral health purposes. Also if you use Xylitol Crystals and spit it out after use, your exposure to it is minimized even further.
      With that said, everyone has to look into it for themselves and weigh the risks in relation to their own bodies.

    • @petetracy5586
      @petetracy5586 2 місяці тому

      Well, that is not what the research article actually said. What it said was that there maybe a correlation between already sick people and future heart attacks in those sick people if they take high amounts of xylitol. It doesn’t say if xylitol causes heart disease or not. Also, there is nothing about metabolically healthy people.
      So essentially we don’t know if it does or doesn’t cause heart attacks. That said, it is always good to be asking the question.

    The only study verified with Xylitol (I looked on NIH--I'm not sure what study you posted and could not find it) involved 10 healthy people who drank 35-50 GRAMS in one beverage. It elevated their blood sugar levels and put at risk for blood clotting. But that's 10 people, a high dosage, and a drink, which we're not doing a drink with this. Also, a study needs at least 30 or so people to have any sort of relevance of statistical relevance.
    Lastly, too, a lot of those heart studies (NIH referenced them) were based on Erythritol. They basically assumed b/c it's true of erythritol, it must be true of Xylitol.
    With that said, do your own research.

    Do you not worry about the evidence that xylitol has a clear link with heart attacks and strokes?

    • @MasterEverydayLiving
      @MasterEverydayLiving  2 місяці тому

      I made a video on that study and it looks at Xylitol as a sugar substitute and not for oral hygiene purposes. So the participants were given a 30g Xylitol drink and then measured for these risks. That is a massive amount compared to the 1/10th one uses for oral hygiene, where you sometimes don't even fully consume it all (especially with the crystals).
      The lead of this recent 2024 study Dr. Hazen even says “It does not mean throw out your toothpaste if it has xylitol in it, but we should be aware that consumption of a product containing high levels could increase the risk of blood clot related events.”
      Here is the video I made on it - ua-cam.com/video/mGeTmH4v6Wk/v-deo.html
      Looking at it from another angle, Finland were the first ones to study Xylitol for oral hygiene purposes and incorporate Xylitol treats into their schools in the 1970's up until today. If this caused this massive increase in heart attack and stroke, they would probably be an anomaly in heart attack and stroke levels. But looking at this world health ranking site (www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/) or other heart attack / stroke statistics comparisons to other countries, Finland is "low" on Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke.
      At the end of the day, you still need to take these risks into consideration and do your own research. If you are already at a high risk for either heart attack or stroke, adding Xylitol to ones oral hygiene routine might be what pushes it over the line making it not worth it.
