My favourite detail is that mcgann regenerates into young john hurt, implying that he must've spent hundreds of years in the time war, as we see him as an old man in day of the doctor.

Apparently, according to the wiki about his age, he was constantly aged, and deaged throughout the entire Time War.
Edit. I forgot to say that this was the reason he says he's only 900 years old in series 1, despite the fact he has said he was older on a number of occasions in the original series, and in some comics and the like.

I know, right? I think it's a perfectly tragic ending to McGann's Doctor - after spending so long trying to do the right thing, his final act is essentially giving up. The salute to his companions is just the icing on the cake.

@Anonymus X Weird you just replied, not shitting you, I had a dream he was in his own episode last night. I can't remember what the story line was I just sort of remember him 'playing the doctor'. Probably a confusion of Withnail and Doctor Who or something.
I have to add here that while I do love Doctor Who, aside from getting to see it through the 80's, I binged all the previous episodes I could get my hands on around the time I posted that, I've not been paying attention since. Capaldi is the last series I've seen.
So I either dream of McGann as the Doctor subliminally all the time and your post caused a recall there, or that was a spooky co-incidence!
I think I would have forgotten I'd had the dream if you'd not posted that, however.
... I remember he was good!
edit: you've got me thinking now, it was like there was actually a reason to use McGann in a new series that actually made sense. I mean, it is Doctor Who after all... I think they could get away with what they want now they have 'Timey Wimey' vernacular.

I’m suprised no one else figured this out, but the fact that there’s a War Doctor in between 8 and 9 definitely explains why they didn’t shoot the Regeneration earlier. I’m glad they did it eventually or the ending to Name of the Doctor wouldn’t make sense. Paul must have been happy to come back for this.

    • @adisassy4579
      @adisassy4579 Рік тому

The reason why there wasn't a regeneration scene earlier is because RTD didn't want to confuse the mainstream audience who weren't familiar with the show at the time. Moffat wanted Eccleston as the War Doctor but he refused to return so then the secret incarnation came in. RTD's original intention was to have McGann be the War Doctor which I personally would've preferred rather than creating a new incarnation for one episode. The War Doctor was merely a Moffat invention so it wasn't the original intention. Paul Mcgann was supposed to regenerate into Christopher Eccleston.

Paul McGann has done the big finish stories but only a tv movie and this and even after 16 years between the TV movie and this he was amazing. A truly great doctor and one I hope returns to the role either for specials or somehow a episode involving the 8th doctor.

Doctor is involved in death by cop scenario and re-generates in the morgue to Paul McGann. You need to watch the movie, he never got a series sadly.

@Andrew Chapman: Yes, he turns into Eccleston in an episode which features David Tennent and Matt Smith as 10 and 11, he sasses them both for pointing their screwdrivers at folk- he turns inside the Tardis into the 9th Doctor. Paul should of got a series rather than this mini, which I don't remember, but, this also is the reason why that John Hurts version doesn't have a number and is basically known as The War Doctor, when technically he is the 9th Doctor and Jodie is technically the 14th but because he didn't want to be "The Doctor" and a warrior instead, the numbers start again from Chris Eccleston and Jodie Whittaker is the 13th I also doubt the last since The Master had 19 incarnations the last being Missy aka The Mistress played by Michelle Gomez. The Doctor needs a nemesis, although The Mister/Mistress is both friend and enemy. Of course there is Me, but I wasn't keen on her character.

Then again, Hurt's Doctor wasn't that dark to begin with,as we later learn. 9 10 and 11 tend to demonize the War Doctor as a way to deflect their own guilt, because they don't remember saving Gallifrey. We see in Day of the Doctor that the W Doctor wasn't even that different to his other selves. He wasn't cruel or even cold, but the other Doctors suffer from self-hated, so they remember him that way.

  • @DoctorRedivivus

Interesting narrative twist that in healing himself the 'physician' ceases to be 'the Doctor'. This is artfully juxtaposed with his inability to help Cass - who is beyond even the skills of the Sisterhood of Karn. The irony of the piece is that the good man from Gallifrey never ceases to be 'the Doctor', it's too much a part of his psyche - he merely loses touch with it somewhat during the Time War.

The thing that I always liked about Mcgann turning into younger John Hurt is that there’s the sort of implication that somewhere out there is like, an alternate universe where the original show maybe never got canceled, and maybe Paul McGann still got cast as the 8th doctor, but a few years earlier, leading to John Hurt maybe getting cast in the mid to late ‘90s, looking exactly like that. Not to most implausible thing.
