Jokes aside tho, they didn't wreck the japanese fleet because of carrier spam. 60% of the entire Japanese fighting force in the pacific got their asses whooped by literally 3 aircraft carriers and their battlegroup, and that was the enterprise, yorktown, and the hornet. These 3 gave the americans the bang for their buck. The Essex class came in late. sadly tho, 2 of the yorktown-classes were sunk, leaving only the Enterprise, the most decorated ship of WW2.. It's a shame some retarded businessman sold her for scrap. If i can go back in time, i'd beat the living crap out of that idiot
Years ago, I think it was History Channel that ran a show called Battle 360 about the USS Enterprise. These little minidocs are shorter, but they offer more information, and more action than that show I was glued to many years ago. These are well done, Wargaming.
It would be great if Battle 360 could be updated with more modern CG and more attention to detail (instead of cookie cutter ships and planes). They could also add more information to each episode. Watching them again, it's as though 50% of each episode was review on what you've seen so far before this last commercial break. LOL

My great-grandfather served on an Essex Class carrier Shangri-la CV-38 during the Second World War as a radio operator. He passed away when i was a little kid so i didn't get to ask him about his service.
@@jasondietrich833 oh I know, it was pretty much finished when the US showed up. Of course, 4 years ago I just started my history degree so I've learned a lot about different historical topics, including more in-depth on WWI
the Corsair was a fighter/bomber. It became more of a close support bomber during Korean war. The TBM/ avengers were used in forest fire fighting into the 70's
This is hilarious. Love the descriptions of the Helldiver. The landing gear would always collapse. Clear the decks! (Then they show a Hellcat crashing). They would often lose their ammunition. Where did it go? Did they ever find it? Unbelievable.
The trouble with the F4U Corsair is that pilots had trouble seeing past the engine when landing on a ship so it was relegated to mostly the Marines. Colonel "Pappy" Boyington of the Black Sheep Squadron flew one of these
The \British soon learned to deal with the landing and the bouncing upon landing on aircraft carriers. Soon afterwords, the US began using them again to!!
@Lalo Lalo That's right, in fact the F4U didn't go on a carrier because it was to diff to land it. I'm not British, but give credit where its due, the Brits took the Corsair & like you said approached the carrier from a right angle then turned into it at the landing.
@Lalo Lalo the merlin and griffin engines were. Built and designed by Packard our crooked politicians would not let them patent it gave the patent rights to R R read Packard history that engine pre dates ww 2
USS Wolverine and USS Sable. Side wheel, coal fired paddle ships. Former Great Lakes cruise liners. Training ships out of Chicago, from 1942-45. Trained 17,000 naval pilots in carrier landings and takeoffs. That's enough pilots to man 190 Essex class air wings. The ships were sold to scrappers in 1947, to be made into Gillette razor blades and Maytag washers.
Japan was able to produce 18 aircraft carriers during the war, America - 150. That in a nutshell, is why Japan never stood a chance in WWII. Once America had changed his industry from a civilian footing to a military one, it was all over.
I can’t tell you how much I love the Corsair, just the look of the beast and all that fire power, I’d hate to be a Japanese pilot going up against one of these!
Yes the F4U was a bad ass plane. Towards the end of WWII the American fighters were all fantastic aircraft, the P-51, P-47 Thunderbolt, Hellcat, you name it, it was the best, & American built & flown!
Still, to this day, i think the Enterprise was, and still would be the champion of the pacific. Everyone who knew her entire story knows not even if the Essex class combine, none of them would be able to match the reputation of that legendary warship and her sister ships. She was respected and feared both ally and enemy alike and was literally called "The Grey Ghost" due to the fact that no matter how much she was badly damaged, for some reason she came back to action and delivered heavy blows to the enemy and the fact that the japanese saw her as unsinkable. THAT for me, is a true champion of the seas.
Ahhh CV-10, the USS Yorktown, such a familiar sight. Living in SC, I always enjoy it when I go to Charleston, crossing the bridge, and seeing the Yorktown in her permanent place on the Cooper River at Patriots Point. Always such a lovely sight to see
It had a lot of nicknames. "Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class" and "Big Tailed Beast" and some others. Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class and Big Tailed Beast are the most common nicknames for it.
The SBD is Slow, But Deadly. That plane was the real IJN's back breaker. If an 'obsolete' plane could take out 30% of your ships in just one year, it's your problem. Forget the Helldiver, the Dauntless is the real deadliest dive bomber in the pacific(And would be more awesome if Yorktown-class aircraft carrier could have the Dauntless with 1000lb bomb in your game)
I disagree. the SBD simply had more chances to fight. by the time the helldiver came to play, the ijn air power was waning. And how did it take out 30%? through killing CVs? Again, there were more CVs available to fight, like during midway.
Fix that electrical problem first would be great, not everyone was OK with landing gear down when you open the bomb bay. And lots of pilot prefer the Dauntless over the Helldiver.
its because the SBD is slower and less survivable. it was certainly not "obsolete" since obsolete means no longer effective/competitive in combat. SB2D however is faster which is important in survivblity. SBDs were liked because they were stable in dive bombing, they were gradually transferred to secondary roles including anti-shipping which makes sense for high level of tonnage sunk. as an aside the Japanese D3A "Vale" sank the largest number of allied ships, so it must be a dive bomber thing.
SBDs were surprisingly effective in shooting down planes, as well. They served as screens against torpedo bombers until the carriers received enough fighters to take over the job.
interesting how a lot of the hanger footage is from the USS Midway in San Diego....which is not an Essex class carrier. lol I sort of expected them to focus on the USS Yorktown (#2) in Charleston and the USS hornet (#2) in San Francisco
I'm so sad that all those great Warships like the Yamato and Musashi have been sunk. I would have loved to see the Yamato as a Museum Ship. Same with all the ships that fell victim to Operation Crossroads.
NEXT Unryū-class vs Essex-class, these carrier was built after the reaction, from attacking Pearl Harbor. -How quickly are they built -Which damage did they get and still floating -How many death from Torpedo, Bombs and near-misses Bombs -How strong are their armor -How fast they are and how far they can go -How many planes can they carry in operation Btw. Essex can carry 100 planes and Unryū 65 planes, but Ikoma can carry 75 planes. (don't forget what if Japanese send the last version of their aircraft?)
The US Navy refused to accept the F4U Corsair because pilots could not see over the long nose for deck landing. It was handed to the Marines for land based operations only. The UK bought the F4U for use on its carriers. Royal Navy pilots developed the curved landing approach so they could keep the deck in view right to the last moment. Only then did the USN put Corsairs on the carriers.
Kamikaze was hell, I saw a war veteran describing it as unfair, I can't even imagine being a pilot in a wildcat slowly climbing up the latter of my plane seat, knowing that my enemies are ready to take me down with them, to that point I think I would've already threw up and pissed in my pants, probably shaking as well too with a really sad face and my eyes quietly crying, knowing that I probably won't come back, btw I'm 20, and these guys were about my age, it really made me think..
what would be funny is if they added an amrican teir 15 class of aircraft carriers the nimitz class with f18s and and all i would be premuim and it would cost real money of about 20 dollars it would be against all teir ten ships now that would be a rage quit deal
One thing about the propeller is that it doesn't look big enough. To fly something that size, and that always amaze me so I really want to feel what the propellers can do
09:16 - That gull-wing that everyone is so familiar with was a practical design feature that enabled the landing gear legs to be as short as possible while allowing ground clearance for it's huge propeller. Just stick to marketing, dude...
+Andrew E. That they did. However, he was saying that they served well in the air to air role during both WW2 and Korea, when they were not employed in that role in Korea, with the exception of night fighters, but they were going up against biplanes, rather than MiGs.
+MrDgwphotos Also a fair point. Though I thought there were one or two notable aerial victories against North Korean or Chinese fighters in daytime, but since I can't remember properly, I tend to doubt it. On the other hand, the vast majority of the information given is still miles ahead of the so-called "History Channel" these days.
+MrDgwphotos Actually the times they DID go against MiGs it often ended badly for the MiG (never get in a turn fight with a piston aircraft in a early jet you'll lose).
Its funny how they fail to mention that the Corsair first was scrapped by the US for use on carriers and it was the British that figured out how to use it on carriers first
I always knew there was a production disparity between Japan and the US, but I didn't realize it was that big. 18 carriers built vs 150 carriers built....and I assume similar numerical differences in other ship classes and aircraft types as well.
OK who was the Hellcat pilot who lands on the deck but crashes into the Carrier's Island breaking his plane in half? That landing is in almost every WW II film showing operations on US Navy Carriers. It seems he survived the landing but I bet he hated being in the kitchen and hearing his wife from the living room watching a WW II Doc film. " Honey come quick......you're about to crash into the Island again "
whats crazy is the US navy never actually had an essx class carrier sunk during the war. in fact after the WASP was sunk off guadalcanal in 1942 they never lost another fleet carrier not only could they deal out pain they could absorb it too
Except history channel now has shows like American Pickers, Counting Cars, Ice Truckers, Axe Men, and Pawn Stars. I can't wait until they start showing real history again.

@@Slavic_Goblin it would have been weird if there wasn't conscription during the largest conflict in human history in one of the major countries. But the saying that hard times create strong man, strong man create easy times and easy time create weak man who create hard times is true. Definitely the society in general is to blame for the fact that people expect others to do stuff for them and bitch about everything. Just the downside of good and easy times
@@karlleego2513 Haven't heard truer words then that in a long time!
I like how this video is less about the Essex and more about the planes.
There are 3 types of player here

People that play Azur Lane
People that play both
I miss my Essex carrier in game
Why can't you play it anymore?
@@Doncroft1 they removed tier 9 carriers from the game very early on.
This episodes are better than the documentary shows on history channels

The quality of these Naval Legends episodes is absolutely fantastic!! Keep it up Wargaming!
"Imagine: a small island country controls a territory 17 times bigger than its own,"
Uh.. Great Britain anyone?
They said that to reference the UK. But unlike the UK, Japan failed to hold ob their holdings.
Funnily enough, I heard that the company/team developing WoWs for Wargaming were previously a film company. Probably why these videos are so good.
My great-grandfather served on an Essex Class carrier Shangri-la CV-38 during the Second World War as a radio operator. He passed away when i was a little kid so i didn't get to ask him about his service.

Really we showed up when WWI was almost over. Without our manpower it would have ended by December 1918 or January 1919
@@jasondietrich833 oh I know, it was pretty much finished when the US showed up. Of course, 4 years ago I just started my history degree so I've learned a lot about different historical topics, including more in-depth on WWI
Japan: Noooo u cant just make 150CVs while we can only make 18
America: Haha 150CVs goes brrrr
the Corsair was a fighter/bomber.
I really love this series made by a game and it's better than most history documentary
I've been on the aircraft carrier in the video it's a beautiful ship
When are we getting one about the goddess of the pacific. ENTERPRISE
Buff my girl back you Russian cheerleaders 😑
loving this series.
These short documentaries are so great! Keep 'em comin'!
The trouble with the F4U Corsair is that pilots had trouble seeing past the engine when landing on a ship so it was relegated to mostly the Marines. Colonel "Pappy" Boyington of the Black Sheep Squadron flew one of these
the Royal Navy took some and it worked pretty well for them.
Bring us back odd tier CVs pls
My favorite Naval Legends episode.
I served aboard the uss shangri-la CVA 38
She is now a bloody beautiful Character in Azur lane
Fun Fact in Cebu, Philippines there's a hotel called ShangriLa hotel
Thank you for your service sir
Thank you for your service sir

*The aviation of the Essex aircraft carrier, the terror of the ocean*
Sabaton: *Observes*
These ships need to be reintroduced into the game. Without them, US Navy would not have won the War in the Pacific.
The USS Hornet (CV-12) is a museum ship in Alameda Naval Base, only a hour away from me
Noice! I’m near an aircraft carrier museum too!
My great grandfather was on the uss essex cv9 in world war 2
Ahhh CV-10, the USS Yorktown, such a familiar sight. Living in SC, I always enjoy it when I go to Charleston, crossing the bridge, and seeing the Yorktown in her permanent place on the Cooper River at Patriots Point. Always such a lovely sight to see
Enterprise senpai
"The Big tail beast"? I though he was know as: "Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class"
Diego Vinicio Majia Quesada I heard that too... it was nicknamed that cos of SB2C
Well it's not like nicknames are mutually exclusive.
It had a lot of nicknames. "Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class" and "Big Tailed Beast" and some others. Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class and Big Tailed Beast are the most common nicknames for it.
They probably chose The big tail beast because they can’t say bitch on their video
Great Video's, Keep them coming.
My pop served aboard the USS PRINCETON CV37 during the Korean war
My grandpa served on the USS Essex
I love how every single one of them just needs the capacity to have HVARs.
That's true, but unfortunately at the sea/air battle at Midway all the SBD's were shot down!
6:15 is footage of a V-1 being downed by a Spitfire or Typhoon/Tempest.
"Endured trageties"
Uss Massachusetts: *Press X to doubt*
interesting how a lot of the hanger footage is from the USS Midway in San Diego....which is not an Essex class carrier. lol
I sort of expected them to focus on the USS Yorktown (#2) in Charleston and the USS hornet (#2) in San Francisco
Or Lady Lex in Texas... They also barely discussed the ships, and focused on the aircraft...
The coursair actually had an inverse gull wing instead of a gull wing
I'm so sad that all those great Warships like the Yamato and Musashi have been sunk. I would have loved to see the Yamato as a Museum Ship. Same with all the ships that fell victim to Operation Crossroads.
NEXT Unryū-class vs Essex-class,
these carrier was built after the reaction, from attacking Pearl Harbor.
-How quickly are they built
-Which damage did they get and still floating
-How many death from Torpedo, Bombs and near-misses Bombs
-How strong are their armor
-How fast they are and how far they can go
-How many planes can they carry in operation
Btw. Essex can carry 100 planes and Unryū 65 planes, but Ikoma can carry 75 planes.
(don't forget what if Japanese send the last version of their aircraft?)
"You don't stand a chance of winning in front of Essex class!"
This is why the were removed
What about USS Midway
It’s a midway class, not an Essex class
The Essex are the real unsinkable ships I think.
Can someone tell the list of musics that they have in this video? I'm so addicted to it....
0:35 That is the Yorktown in Charleston
Kamikaze was hell, I saw a war veteran describing it as unfair, I can't even imagine being a pilot in a wildcat slowly climbing up the latter of my plane seat, knowing that my enemies are ready to take me down with them, to that point I think I would've already threw up and pissed in my pants, probably shaking as well too with a really sad face and my eyes quietly crying, knowing that I probably won't come back, btw I'm 20, and these guys were about my age, it really made me think..
WHAT IS THE SONG AT 16:18 plsss
Some of these museum planes are on the USS MIDWAY, which was built to replace the Essex class carriers

what would be funny is if they added an amrican teir 15 class of aircraft carriers the nimitz class with f18s and and all i would be premuim and it would cost real money of about 20 dollars it would be against all teir ten ships now that would be a rage quit deal
Against the nation with over 400+ divebombers to bear against those 18" guns LOL
make a Naval Legends Video about the USS Enterprise(CV-6) plz i need this in my life!!!
It had the most battle stars of any ship even now
One thing about the propeller is that it doesn't look big enough.
+Treetop64 Not to mention that they were obsolete in the air to air role in Korea, so they were primarily used for Close Air Support.
+MrDgwphotos In fairness, they did quite well in the CAS/Interdiction role.
Japan did not have any domestic sources of iron ore or coal two key ingredients for making steel
They also were dependent on US oil imports and scrap iron from the US in their 1920-30's military buildup.
The US built 175 Fletcher class destroyers during the war. Not total destroyers. Just Fletcher class destroyers.
This puts the History Channel to absolute shame
just why i love WG because their channel teach us a lot of stuff than History Channel
The arrival of the Essex-class carriers effectively ended the effectiveness of Japanese carriers and Japanese submarines.
Japan: great I got 18 carriers, more than the Royal Navy!
US: I got 150
Japan: whoops
OK who was the Hellcat pilot who lands on the deck but crashes into the
Carrier's Island breaking his plane in half? That landing is in almost every WW II
film showing operations on US Navy Carriers. It seems he survived the landing
but I bet he hated being in the kitchen and hearing his wife from the living room
watching a WW II Doc film.
" Honey come quick......you're about to crash into the Island again "
whats crazy is the US navy never actually had an essx class carrier sunk during the war. in fact after the WASP was sunk off guadalcanal in 1942 they never lost another fleet carrier
not only could they deal out pain they could absorb it too
Hornet (CV-8) was the last US Navy fleet carrier lost in the war.
So can someone help me i am about to build a 1:350 scale u.s.s essex and i need the right type of gray that would fit on a carrier
Feels like watching a History Channel program.
ChristianRG2000 that was the battleground because of the location of the islands between Japan and Indonesia
Except history channel now has shows like American Pickers, Counting Cars, Ice Truckers, Axe Men, and Pawn Stars. I can't wait until they start showing real history again.
