Battleship Bismarck is perhaps one of the most famous ships of World War II. She was the perfect embodiment of the predominant idea of her time that only steel behemoths with powerful armament and strong armor could dominate the seas. The fate of battleship Bismarck represents both the greatest triumph of that idea, and at the same time-its dramatic collapse.
Naval Legends usually features ships that still exist today. But you’ve been asking us to create an episode about Bismarck for a very long time, so we decided to make an exception! Of course, the only fitting format for this episode would be Naval Legends, because the purpose of this show is to inform you about the history of famous ships and battles of the 20th century.

Talk about inaccurate… the swordfish survived not because of its armour, but because it had NO armour - the heavy German AA was punching clean through the cloth skin without detonating. Second, Bismarck’s shots didn’t miss because of prior damage, in fact she nearly zeroed in on the old Rodney when a lucky hit blew her main fire control clean off the ship. So yeah. Glossed over details, with the ones that are left being downright misleading, and reused CGI from previous trailers? Certainly Bismarck deserves more than this!
Also didn't the bismarck sink because the crew scuttled it ?

@@saltyvanilla3304 Eeyup, there's a lot of confirmation bias about it. We even got a bunch of other vessels that aren't as well known, Cod, Little Rock, Cavalier. I'm happy those had their time since you can so easily find stuff for names like Bismarck anyway.

Is it just me or the this video is bad in terms of quality, compares to other Naval Legends? Short duration, no new CG Visuals, ships that engaged the Bismarck were not mentioned as well as smaller incidents and details. Might just be that my expectations were too high.
No you are right. Its blatantly shit. I was waiting too for this episode and its quality is too bad for me not to dislike the video. Just a camera going in circles around a model. No CGI, no historical footage, underwhelming storytelling. I guess its true that history is written by the victor.... Germans always get the worst ( i am not german btw)

I have never heard anyone pronounce "Prinz Eugen" that badly. I mean, it hurts to hear a English speaking person say "Luftwaffe" or "Kriegsmarine", but that was a completely other level.

You me both! I was also expecting a quality Yamato type video but this, this was an underwhelming lazy pile of boringness that horrendously undersold the Bismarck story. Having wanting this video for such a long time & to get this as a result is absolutely criminal. Why they're using models which don't get me wrong are amazing but WG has 1:42 scale for all that....

@@Kenny212_2 It was designed to fight as a battleship in close ranges. Bismarck was not designed as a commerce raider like Graf Spee - It was an evolution of the Bayern and was built to fight another Jutland battle. The Kriegsmarine ended up foolishly using their capital ships as commerce raiders.
It had Fantastic Armor as for the main Hull Armor, I don't know where the debate comes from if that's in dispute, maybe the Armor scheme and layout, the Germans made the best Armor period always have and still do, American, British and German in that order. I can't think of any Warship that took as much Punishment as Bismark, Ten Ships attacked it all night and they could not sink it, the Germans Scuttled not just to prevent capture but survivors said because they would not stop attacking it and Men were being maimed & Killed as they were trying to abandon it, they were not shown the same mercy Bismarck gave Prince of Wales. According to the Bismarck Expedition, they could not find a single Penetration of the main Hull Armor after taking Hundreds of hits from the largest Guns.and the Torpedos didn't do much damage, the Ship was incredibly strong especially when looking how intact it is.
Bismarck's spare Armor is still at Blohm & Voss Shipyard where it has been Tested and pieces were given to other nations to test but is used for Crane testing, Blocking for Ships, and temporary Weights.

The Bismarck never had AA mounts on the B and C turrets and secondary turrets. She also never had the double radar tower on the top of the conning tower like Tirpitz she had the single like the gun director towers fore and aft

So Bismarck was assigned the task of sneaking out into the Atlantic, and raiding allied convoys, how’d that go?
It immediately got spotted, got damaged after landing an historically lucky shot against the old ass battleCRUISER hood, then tried to run away and got obliterated by the British.
The bismarck, a ship that was supposed to sink allied convoys, sunk a grand total of… zero merchant ships.
Sinking of the hood was an historically lucky shot, and also a massive british blunder. They really should’ve known better after Jutland not to use their battle cruisers against battleships, since at Jutland, 3 of their battle cruisers immediately blew up and sank after engaging german battleships, yet none of the german battleships at Jutland get this “legendary” status. Why Bismarck? It was an abject failure. A waste of german resources. The legendary status assigned to Bismarck is difficult to defend.
Imagine a may event where you play as or fight against the Bismarck at full ranges. When you complete the operation it would act like chapters in a story. The first part would be the Hood’s destruction, second would be repairing and changing course (or sailing and charting a course for the brits in all of the ships from the real operation), and third would be the Bismarck’s destruction.

Edit: after reading more of the comments and rewatching the older naval legends videos, I have to agree that this video seems lacking on comparison to other videos in the same series... How does the Sovietsky Soyuz (which was only laid down and then scrapped in the dockyard) get a video longer than Bismarck? Bismarck is probably the most famous battleship in the Atlantic( if not in the world)

this episode felt so awfully inadequate and rushed compared to other episodes, the fact that WG tried to cover the entirety of the battle, the ship, and a bunch of other unrelated facts in a 10 min documentary basically ruined everything. I do not know whether this was deliberate on part of WG but I choose not to believe in the Russian bias conspiracies even though in the current state of this video its certainly tempting me to believe in it, but this is just unacceptable, honestly

I expected at least a 20 minute video. I'm disappointed. Battle 360 did the documentary way better.
It is a shame really. They always had great graphics and narration. But not bothering with basic things such as pronunciation is so frustrating. And it isn't a conspiracy. This is the russian way. They do everything like this.

As a Brit I admire the Bismarck which is ironic but her lines are unmistakable. The secindaries in the game are insane. Love the ship

This is truly a beautiful ship. This is my 3rd favorite battleship behind the Iowa and yamato. I do wish the tirpetz was rebuilt and survived the war. It would be cool to walk on one of these ships
at the end Bismarck sink because the crew scuttled it, He received about 500 hits of various calibers and minimum 18+ torpedo hits
16 torpedoes hit it and 500 shells caused just 5 holes
It died a warrior's death, the gates of Valhalla were open to it!
I don't think her sinking is from a Torpedoes launched by the British Heavy Cruiser. I think the crew scuttle her and open the sea valves, flooding her port side watertight compartment
wartime survivors (British Sailors) of the HMS Cossack actually said, they think the brits didnt sink the Bismarck, their conclusion is: "The Germans sank her themselves, they scuttled her, so we wouldnt get her". and yes Bismarck is the only ship to be called a he, but the brits didnt know that at that time.
Edit: mind yourselves that the Cossack was one of the British ships to be closest to the Bismarck when he sank, they saw everything themselves.

That was a respectful and honorable documentary about a ship that will live forever, not by the politics that created or commissioned her but by the men who sailed her. Thank you war gaming.
Its all fun and games till War Gaming raises Bismarck out of the ocean for specifications.
The irony is that the ships sent to sink her the Rodney and George V and other smaller ships were all eventually scrapped, and the Bismarck still exists in almost pristine condition on the bottom of the ocean.

I got to correct you here WG, Bismarck actually hit the bridge of HMS Rodney and badly damaged K.G.5, he took a lot of torpedo hits which none of them caused any damage, nor did the cruisers that attacked him before.

He did got hit by torp. But silght damage, turtleback at its finest. Unless the one that got his rudder, yeah its really jamming his stern.

My grandma lived through the war as a kid. She then learned about the hood and bismarck battle on the sea. She knows everything to detail on what exactly happened. She is 90 now, still recalling everything what happened during the war. Even survived the winter we dutch call, "honger winter".

The Bismark was one hell of a beast on the seas, didn't go down without a fight.
I thought Bismarck was ultimately sunk by scuttling charges set by the crew.
She was but everyone says the brits sunk her, tho it was even confirmed that none of the shells fired from the royal navy ships ever got through the thick layers of Bismarck's armour.

He was scuttled. Although I already knew, a video I recently saw explained how easily debunked the thought of the English sinking Bismarck is; Ships when they have air in them usually crunch and squish and explode when they go under the seas due to pressure and such. The ship would not be easily recognizable and not in as good shape as he is now. But, if water is in the hull, then the ship goes down easier and stays in clean shape. The video examined the Bismarck under the seas and showed how clean and preserved he was. The hull, what was visible, appeared fine, so the Germans did scuttled Bismarck, and let him sink, the British did not "sink" him.
I mean does it really matter because by that time even if the crew sunket it was still basically useless I mean the thing was like a hoping metal of death Ben sinkable Bismarck literally became it's a weakness because it would not go down to literally they started shooting superstructure which was like destroying every component up there honestly if somehow Bismarck made it out there I think they would have not fixed her because Dan those repair cost would be scary

Yes charges were set but at that point the ship was going down. Anything more was just speeding up her end.

I have never commented on UA-cam but I had to for this one. This is massively disappointing wg. This ship deserves an ACTUAL naval legend video, it's not like there is not a lot to talk about in terms of this ship. It's sad how long people have been waiting for this episode and all we got was a 13 minute video on the story everyone and there brother knows of how the ship sunk and NOTHING ELSE. This gets an absolute dislike from me.

Bismarck also had a massive swastika painted on her bow and stern decks. These were painted over so that she didn’t scream “German” to any orbiting Allied aircraft. When Bismarck was found on the bottom of the Atlantic, the paint covering them had worn away, revealing the swastikas in near perfect clarity.

One issue only, Bismarck wasn’t “she” Bismarck was “he”, the only ship on the Kriegsmarine called “he” for his power.

Actually, I think it may have been both torpedoes and scuttling at the same time. Although, regardless of who delivered the final blow, the British killed her rudder and rendered her unmaneuverable.

If we look at Naval Traditions then the Bismarck would be a "She"
But if we look deeper into History then the Bismarck is a "He" "He" is historically correct because Germans called The Bismarck a "He" back then during WW2 such as Ernst Lindemann,The crew of the Bismarck,and U-556's crew I think I'll go with a "He" because of This other ships such as Tirpitz,etc will be ALWAYS a "She".

Such a lazy episode from WG, im disappointed to say the least, having waited 4 years for this and all we get is? All of the CG footage are scenes from sabaton's bismarck, otherwise all other footage are just a repetitive cycle of models, don't get me wrong, the models are beautiful, but seriously? this is the best WG can do? Even the Sovetsky Soyuz had better footage, seriously, a class of ships that was never built has more CG footage than a true naval legend? People came here to see the bismarck, yet nearly a quarter of the episode was dedicated to the swordfishes and various royal navy ships, I hate to say this but I would have to give this episode a dislike, such a disappointment for waiting so long. Even though this episode was only 10 mins it felt like forever, it was boring and unexciting, seriously, a short, low quality episode and you dedicate this to one of the most legendary ships in naval history? petition for WG to redo bismarck!
I kinda agree, while I still enjoy the video but it kinda disappoint when they reuse the old material, one of the thing that I always wait from WG Naval legend is their new superb animation, sad they didn't make it on this one
while Im glad they finally did bismarck, i think this could have been one of the most detailed episodes, since the story of the bismarck was one of the most prominent events in WWII. This could have been the longest and most detailed episode, but they seemed to have cobbled together some footage and called it a day...

I agree. Very poor and shallow episode. WG should talk about ship's construction - show not only strenghts but also weakneses of Bismarck - outdated artillery layout (2x4, while 3x3 was already in use) and not so strong armor (320 mm sides, while for example Vittorio Venetto had 350 and KGV had 373 mm). Also history of Bismarck's mission was really pathetically shown. Some destroyers attacked Bismarcks? God! There was one of the craziest's naval duels during WW2, when polish destroyer Piorun alone confronted Birmarck im 60 minutes gun battle! Also Piorun was blinking her lights to Bismarck sending Morse message "I'm polish destroyer Piorun"!
Also you should add, that during her last battle Bismarck was trying to surrender, but british officers "honourably" decided not to see these signals. Very gentleman's way of fighting, but one should not expect anything different from Britons.
I have to second this... the "Naval Legends" series is great and its very good to get more info on these ships and other combat equipment of naval scenes... but this is just lousy at best, Short and recycled... I do hope they start to pick up quality again.
