Nestled among pearly the white luxury super yachts of Athens, is the world’s last remaining heavily armored cruiser of the 20th century and living monument to Greek history, RHNS Georgios Averof. Were it not for the budgetary constraints of the Italian government, and the will and testimony of a deceased, but generous benefactor, the Greek navy could have looked a lot different from the one that were equipped to dominate the waves in the First Balkan War, and help resist Nazi Germany in both World Wars.
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

Greece has no right other than conveniently trying to manuplate the internation law. I certainly do read and suggest you do the same. Turkey does not claim the whole sea but Greece has the audacity to do exactly that. Treaty of Lausanne created a situation where all the countries could use this sea without having to involve any neighboring countries. Greece is trying to change this fact and block Turkey's exit to the international waters. We will NOT allow it! It had non exiatent AA in 1911 configuration and no torps in 1925 configuration... 24 knots is really crappy for anything that isnt a dreadnaught... The only strength i trully see is that upper deck armor that is tier 10 equilivant... Making it god tier brauler...they could balance it by other giving him bad gun dispersion, bad torpedo protection or bad firing angles (where you either use 3 turrets or get punished by citadels while broadside). In my opinion...a brauler, identical to NC would be amazing in tier 4 or 5...after that, i find it unfair technology wise for Averof to deal with ships like Nagato, Sharnhorst, Belfast etc.

There's a good reason Averof is called a "battleship" by Greeks, since she is a relative anomaly in the usual Hellenic Navy dogma of mobility over armour, firepower and staying power, and an armoured cruiser, though nimbler than battleships, battlecruisers and heavy cruisers, is likely still well above the expected Hellenic Navy displacement requirements for a combat ship, don't forget it was an opportunistic purchase.

Two more stories about admiral Kountouriotis which demonstrate his daring, heroic character and his patriotism.
After the Battle of Elli the Greek goverment congratulated but also admonished the admiral because ''he exposed the most modern and valuable ship of the fleet to great danger''. He answered that ''the battleships are intented for use in battle'' and ''possible damage or destruction must not discourage us from the nessesary actions.''
In 1913 the Ottomans bought a super dreadnought which was under construction in Great Britain by Armstrong Whitworth (It was the Rio de Janeiro ordered initially for the Brazilian navy). This alarmed the Greek goverment as with this ship the Ottomans would take the upper hand and another war would possibly break out. Kountouriotis went to prime minister Venizelos with a plan: he will take a torpedo boat and wait in the open sea near Gibraltar and as the ship is coming from Britain ''I will nail her with two torpedoes and sent her to hell. Of course after that you will have to disown me and dismiss me from office (I don't care) , Greece will pay reparations but Turkey even if all hell break out will be unable to move against us'' (the words are exact). Venizelos freaked out with such a daring proposition and didn't answer. However, the WW I shortly broke out and the ship was consficated by the British authorities and entered service as the HMS Agincourt.

On August 12, 2020 The Hellenic frigate Limnos was sailing near Oruc Reis [ a Turkish petroleum survey ship] when it came into the path of one of the Turkish naval escorts, the Kemal Reis - Barbaros-class frigate.
The Greek frigate maneuvered into a head-on collision with the Turkish Barbaros-class frigate [among the most modern frigates in the Turkish Navy], and in the process its bow smashed the rear of the Turkish frigate, according to Reuters sources.
Hellenic Navy Commander of the Hellenic frigate Limnos - Captain Ioannis Salaries, was commended by Hellenic Defense Minister Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos regarding the incident which occurred while the Turkish Oruc Reis survey ship was moving between Cyprus and the Greek island of Crete, shadowed by a number of Greek frigates. During their brief talk over the radio, Commander Ioannis Salaries told Panagiotopoulos that he had done his duty.

Before the battle of Elli, in December 1912, Averof's engineers made a cross and donated it to admiral Kountouriotis for good luck. As the Turkish fleet appeared on the horizon, Kountouriotis told his crew, that whatever was touched by the cross they made for him, nothing could harm and that they should fear nothing. When the Turkish fleet opened fire, Kountouriotis raised the flag signaling the letter "Z", meaning that the Admiral's ship will move independently from the rest of the fleet and telegraphed to the Greek government and the rest of the fleet : "With God's help and the wishes of the King, I am sailing with unstoppable momentum against the enemy of the Nation", charging alone against the entire Turkish fleet. During both the battles of Elli and Lemnos Kountouriotis commanded the Greek fleet standing alone, outside, in Averof's weather bridge, holding with his left hand the cross, his crew gave him, against the forward side of the weather bridge of G. Averof.

It is remember me, that the Hellenism was, is and I'm sure, they remain the rulers of the east Mediterranean Sea. The Greeks, instead of other cultures, did not build ships only to carry out soldiers and wars. Their Voyages has was not only carry trade goods, the Greek culture, technology... They was explorer and adventurer. They share their findings with other ruch cultures and come back from their journeys with new storys and findings. The Minoan, the Athenian fleet which wins many great wars, whose strategy is compulsory in the most important naval schools.

This has been a fascinating documentary! I am going to make a point of seeing this historic ship. I had no idea of this historical treasure, but you live and learn. Just for the record, a Turkish gentleman told me ( comment section of another video) that he hopes there is no war between our respective countries because Turkey would wipe Greece off the map. Somehow I think not and not only because of this documentary. Greece will not start any wars but will rightly defend its self. War mongering is not a Greek trait, however, it will rise to the occasion when its sovereignty is threatened as done numerous times in the past. May there be peace in the world. History should have taught humans invaluable lessons. Long live Greece and western heritage founded on ancient philosophers.

If Turkey could wipe Greece off the map like that they would have done so already. The reasons why they dont even try are multiple but can be summed to one basic truth. Many have tried wiping Greece and Greeks off the map, many times before, but they failed, cause we are still here. So to sum it up as we say here in Greece whenever we hear a threat, turkish included:

Fun fact: Today, Greece has one of the largest fleets in the Mediterranean, meant to be on par with that of the Republic of Turkey.
Funnier fact: Both navies have ships built by the same countries, mostly Germany. Greece and Turkey have the same classes of submarines, all of them german, the only difference being the Type 214 subs the greeks bought, which the turks currently don't have.
Even funnier fact: Both the greek and turkish navies have more combat ships each than the actual german navy, with slightly more frigates and corvettes and twice the number of submarines. Between the both of them they'd outnumber the german navy 2 to 1, so they could beat Germany in a war.
Add to that that Greece has one of the largest armored forces out of all the countries in the EU, with Turkey more than doubling them, mostly with older models (most turkish tanks are Pattons awaiting modernization) and they could totally march all the way to Berlin and beat the hell out of their main supplier of weapons.
It's unbelievable how much these two countries mean for the german military industrial complex. I wonder if one of the reasons why there's still strong opposition to Turkey joining the EU is because they want to keep the Greco-Turkish tensions high to keep selling both of them weapons.

Interesting to know that it was actually a Cruiser since we all grew up knowing and calling it a Battleship. Also, at the same dockside, right next to Averof there is another historic museum/ship of the Hellenic Navy named "Velos". One of the very few Fletcher-class American Destroyers still surviving afloat. Too bad all the camera angles missed it. May be in a future episode.

Actually it is the last (acc. to the documentary) ever commissioned armoured cruiser. The class was replaced by the battlecruiser which was better armed and protected following the lessons of Tsusima. That's probably why the Italians wanted to sell it before its commission. This means that at the time of commission it was actually obsolete if you relate to the major powers of the world (GB, Germany, France). But it didn't matter. All it mattered was that it was the baddest MF in the neighbourhood and that it's crue and navy was lightyears better than the adversary (still is BTW, read the recent news ;-)

What an amazing Presentation !
Something to add, from from my grandfather's war stories. The Averof was so scary to the turkish sailors, that they had a nickname for it: SEYTAN PAPOR = SATAN SHIP. The Greek sailors gave it a more loving nickname: BARBA YIORGOS =UNCLE GEORGE
Needless to say that any ship is only as good as its captain and crew. Koundouriotis was by style and ability the Greek Nelson.
