The Mikasa battleship had cost Japan a 6% of the country’s overall annual budget, and at the time of her construction, she was the most powerful ship in the world. Mikasa was never defeated in battle, and also was part of one of the most dramatic episodes in the history of the Russian Navy - the Battle of Tsushima.

And the only surviving pre-dreadnought battleship.
HMS Vanguard and USS Enterprise should have been preserved. It´s a damn shame those are sold for scrap.

Mikasa park is right next to Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka, where I served (active duty) for three years & as a civilian for six years. Mikasa park, which is the area you see in the video (off her port side), has small concerts, often during the summer months. Forward of the ship, you can see a portion of FLEACT, Yokosuka. I miss Japan (lived there for 12 years).
Lol! I used to work with Kazou (the guy around the 5:40 mark). I worked public affairs on Kitty Hawk & FLEACT Yokosuka Public Affairs. He would coordinate with us for tours of certain things & we would accompany him on tours. He used to translate for us, sometimes, when we had Japanese tour groups. He is a cool, laid-back dude.
I was onboard the USS Mobile Bay CG- 53 in Yokosuka from 1997 til 2000. I also miss it there ,Proud to be a 7th fleet sailor!
I miss Japan. I am disappointed in our nation. After 12 years of living in Japan, I come back to the U.S. to find it is a shit-hole. Me (& my family) want out. We are looking to emigrate elsewhere.
Yokosuka FLEACT cars have a license plate with a "Y".

I had more freedom as a civilian in Japan than a U.S. government employee.
I was in Yokosuka three months ago to visit the ship. Too bad I came there from Yokohama at past noon. I only knew about the Military Shop and the curry restaurants on the way home. Much of Mikasa was under scaffolding when I came

The Pre-Dreadnoughts and the ships of World War I (not necessarily mutually exclusive) are really underrated and under appreciated. I won't deny the newer ships are better and more effective but there's a certain beauty of the old pre-dreadnoughts and the like.

The nane of mikasa is taken from the forename mt .wakakusa in nara japan. They won the battle with Russia, people living in nara is proud of it.

There's still a street in Barrow, where this ship was built, named after her.
In the 1960s (Yes I'm that old !) I went to Walney County Secondary School in Barrow-in-furness, The school was on the corner of Ocean Road and Mikasa Street. The school was demolished in the 1990s ,but Mikasa Street is still there . Vickers Armstrong also built the Japanese battlecruiser Kongo just before the First World War she outclassed Royal Navy Capital ships of the time. So much that the British built the Lion, Tiger and Princess Royal
The story about the comment from the British person who went to the dance on it is pretty funny considering that today Mikasa is the closest thing to the only remaining British battleship in existence.
I will forever be salty that there wasn't a single Royal Navy battleship preserved for posterity. The Germans and Japanese probably did more for the preservation of RN battleships by making sure some were beyond the reach of the scrapper.
It would be great if, when you are listing the ship's size, gun's calibre excetera, you could have listed metric measurements too

I use a Mikasa in the game if I want some early pre dreadnought action. Properly handled she can be formidable despite her two main guns.

@@kkhagerty6315 Not at all I also have Dreadnought and a few more early first Generation Dreadnoughts. You need to have a effective strategy I never go head on with Mikasa, maneuver is the key..

I have been there before. The 305mm guns are really really too big...The AP and HE are also bigger than man's legs. And the gun is forward to the US Navy basement nearby.

その後誕生した国産戦艦にも魚雷発射管ついてますよ。（装備したのはいいが、使い勝手悪いし、戦艦に魚雷いらなくね？ってなった結果、撤去されました。なお大和型は初めから魚雷発射管は持ってません。）

When BBs want some of that OP torp game.
Up through the 1920s it was commonplace for battleships to have submerged torpedo tubes. They proved to not be very useful and largely got removed from ships that lasted long enough to get WW2-era refits.

Yamamoto saw the close up tactics of Admiral Togo and above all; the need for surprise in battle. It’s hard to think that both Togo and Isoroku were the most notable admirals of the Combined Fleet.

well that was one, another fact is that the Russian Navy was cocky as fuck, because no eastern nation has ever beaten a western nation. (got their ass kicked twice.) hell russia was soo pissed at that they technically never ended WWII with Japan, so technically speaking, WWII is the second longest war ever.
Before the Atomic Bombs were dropped Russia and The US were planning a mass invasion of Japan. the US to mostly end the War. Russia was both to end it and to avenge there humiliation of what happened to the Russian Imperial Fleet back in the Russian-Japanese War. The Russians had a habit of holding a grudge

Lets be honest having your fleet decimated and humiliated as bad as what happened to the Russians by the Japanese Imperial Navy tends to leave a scar that doesn't heal. Hell the fact that they are still sour too this day about it even after several government changes shows how royally pissed they are about it and would like nothing more then to shove it to Japan.
Lol the Russian historian says the Japanese victory was from luck and inexperience. As if equipment, professional leadership, diligent training and morale had no bearing on the outcome.
Not to mention the Russian fleet were cocky back then. They went through the riskier path than the safer one.
@@CheshireDCat I forgot the source, but I think Russian fleet was running short of coal supply. So it's either miss the battle for using the longer and safer route or push through to regroup with reinforcement.

I'm suprised the Mikasa survived WW2, considering that just about every Japanese ship except one the IJN Nagato which later became one of many WW2 ships used and sunk in the Bikini Atoll A-bomb Test.
Well, she's already encased in concrete since Washington Naval Treaty, way before WW2 starts. So she never served WW1. Encased because that was the only way she can escaped being sunk or scrapped due to said Naval Treaty.
