Thanks Eric. I retired from the trade 2 weeks ago and was missing it right up until I watched this vid and am so happy to have made the decision I did. All the best to you all for 2017
Hannah is without a doubt the best mechanics helper, I have ever seen. She gives her undivided attention to the task at hand, and not on some cell phone or fixing her hair. What an asset to any business. Oh by the way, one of us is going to have to change the ring tone on the phone. Every time your phone rings, I jump up and check to see if it's my phone ringing. ;-) . My wife even asked the other day, Ken is that your phone ringing ? Yeah I know, it's my phone...Oh well. This job is not for old men , like the movie said.....take care..Ken
I admire your percerveirance Mr O, I have been a tech for 18 years and would rather chase electrical all day long over engine exchanging. You keep a positive attitude on a pita job as this. Cheers Eric.
i dont now if anyone else suggested it before, but try holding trans up with a ratchet strap, that way it gives you more room and if you have to raise the vehicle you don't have worry about jack being there. I love the videos, keep them coming
I think it's great that Hannah helps you. She is building skills and confidence and will have a lifetime of memories. The world needs people like she is becoming!
For we home gamers, it is great to see that you struggle with the same things that we do, but you have a 12-step program to get a solution. I learned kneeling over my father's shoulder, holding the light and ducking wrenches when things didn't work out. I can afford to pay someone like you to do it right (and faster) but I like to get my hands dirty and fingers bloody, so anything purely mechanical on my '08 Dakota, I try to do it myself. My family knows to have the band aids ready whenever I pull the compressor and air tools out!
Dealt with a bolt like that once - many years ago when I was young and stupid. And broke - so no air tools. Took 2 of us with a cheater bar and 2 cans of penetrating oil...and about 3 hours. Never, NEVER again! :-P
toysareforboys Thay Nano is a lil beast. Picked it up after watching it taking a beating on another vid. I now have a 35 cfm air compressor to run all my Astro/Aircat toys. Astro and Aircat are good alternatives to SO or Mac.
I love your video's Dude, they are the best! I can relive the glory days, look at all the scars on my hands and remember all the fun I had working on my rusty Michigan cars. Now I retired myself to let the other guy do my work and gladly sit in a chair and watch. I will hand you the wrenches any day. I loved it having a gopher, running to get my tools and cleaning the gaskets and cleaning up the rust. Now I do that and let the younger guys rip the skin off their nuckles

Loving the series so far! One thing though, when asking Hannah to lower the engine a little, I wouldn't have my arm in there, just in case she accidentally turns the valve the wrong way. Brain fade can happen to the best of us! Keep them videos coming!
Eric, You are the Astro test lab. The top side of that bolt is in a little well that holds water as well as salt and dirt. I broke one once. It is a hardened bolt. I had metal spirals raining down for 45 minutes.
Swapping engines is a nice change of pace sometimes. Thinking outside the box pays off most of the time! I live outside the box most of the time and have had a hard time following instructions b/c most of the time I laugh at them and throw them to the floor. My parents used to tell me that all the time before & after they beat me :D

You know even when your aware of risks like that sometimes you have momentary lapses. I got my hand trapped under something after a lifting strap on a versa lift broke. I should have known better than to have my hand there but I couldn't get a hold of the thing anywhere else.
Hi Eric And happy new Year to you and your family. I really enjoy when you show a video that proves a method not in the routine maintenance manual. There are still backyard mechanics like myself that do not have a lot of equipment at our disposal to do a job. Also great comment for Hanna regarding just how much help the assistant is even just cleaning up and passing tools. It saves hours of your time. Brian & Shotty

Was curious why you did not pull the radiator. I can't tell from the video but I have seen a lot of radiators are now held in with a few bolts and then sit on rubber grommets. I may seem like on an inch or two but it could be all you need, and less worrying about contact with the radiator. I love your videos and have come to appreciate what it means when people say 'California car' when it comes to rust. I am still amazed you get anything done without major structural pieces just crumbling from the rust.
