I have had a few mechanics do free inspections. I took my Civic to a shop after a test drive and five technicians stood under the car on the lift telling me how clean it was and they would buy it. They did see a leak from the rear main seal. They told me to just check the oil weekly and have the seals replaced when I did the timing belt. I wish they had noticed the lights pulsing like my girlfriend and I had. The voltage was not being regulated, so I needed to replace the alternator. Still, I bought a 1999 Forester from a dealership and they had me walk under it on the lift and see how clean it was. However, it turned out the head gasket was seeping, but I would have been okay had I had the head gasket replaced with the timing belt.

Subaru peeps are stupid they think oh its Japanese it wont rust and will run forever. Any car not maintained and especially one from the North with road salt from winter wont last nearly as long as usual.
Japanese cars are known for being rusty as hell, here you can't even trust a 2010 subaru. I know a guy who sold a nearly perfect 2011 outback and got 6.5k for it, 5k is total ripoff for 2003 rust bucket
Reminds me of this time working at Jiffy Lube an older I'd say elderly woman came in she had a subaru too, said if we can check it out because she recently bought it and smelled burning oil. Me being one of the more experienced people there and liking looking at cars for people, I did. She took a bank loan out for $4,000 for this car. Had a shabby oil pan gasket replacement, had oil leak, transmission fluid leak, power steering fluid leak, the frame was rotted out. I told my manager and we had to break it to this lady without giving her a heart attack that her car is very unsafe and she shouldn't be driving it but she said she's been traveling mainly on highways with her family. Heart breaking, absolutely heartbreaking.
I like your video intro or lack there of, most people on UA-cam have 30 to 60 sec intros which get annoying and Iam sure most people skip. I like the way you videos are just a quick “hi” and then straight into the video. 👍

Ah the classic dealer move, detail the interior, clean/wax the exterior, then put it up for top dollar. In my trade we call that a “special”, unfortunately a lot of hard working folk fall for it. I’m glad this guy got his money back as not many do.
It seems like vehicles are getting flimsier and flimsier while the prices keep going higher and higher! I am quite frankly, disappointed in nearly every newer vehicle offering out there, especially for the price they're charging. They are not even worth HALF that much (to me, anyway).
@@mattltech ...I see so many rotted-out crossmembers and sub-frames on later model vehicles. Those are parts that should NEVER need replaced unless damaged in an accident, and should outlast the rest of the vehicle...regardless of harsh winters and exposure to salt and deicing chemicals. Seeing this video, and all of other cars you have to work on, makes me appreciate living in the southwest. No rust here, just tumbleweeds and 110 degree summers. Glad the customer got their $$ back.

@@DontCryAboutIt ...Especially for $5K. At that price, at least the body, frame and underpinnings should be intact. Also the vehicle should be able to pass the equivalent of a full, legitimate state inspection for that price! $5K is a heck of a lot of money for a car that is over 10 years old, and the customer by rights should be able to get at least a couple of years worry-free service before it needs anything beyond basic maintenance.
Subies tend to go for more because of the AWD. $5000 at a used car dealership doesn't seem wildly unreasonable. I'd say it's a fair $2500 or $3500. Basically any vehicle with 15 years of NY salt is going to have serious rust issues. It depends on if those leaks are leaking a lot. The rust was 6 or 7 out of 10 for NY.
VSurfn yup so true, they hype the hell out of them then when people complain about all the issues they have they stick their heads in the sand and pretend it doesn’t happen, subaru’s are junk
luckily it was running down the back of the engine and landing directly on the hot exhaust, so i was trailing blue smoke down the highway and the burned oil smell. otherwise i would have not known and blown the engine. caught it in time, thought it was the rear main seal initially but was relieved it was just the switch.
Would that truck happen to be a Chevy? My Chevy van has the oil pressure pickup right at the back of the engine. It uses a little extension and apparently the diesel engine vibration was enough to fatigue the 1/4 brass extension. Luckily it cracked and started leaking before it broke clean off. Soon as I poked the sensor it just broke off.
88 Dodge Ram actually. sensor is right behind the distributor. also my oil gauge is working again with the new sensor installed. 318 gas engine 338,000 miles. glad you caught yours in time too.

I just bought Renault Clio 2001 for 650€uros and its rust free. Minor issues, but drives good, has inspection ok and AC works. Maybe its different in Usa?
Canada too. We salt our roads due to the snow and ice which is what does the damage. Cars used normally succumb to the rust in 8-12 years. Usually first to go are the rocker panels, brake & fuel lines, door bottoms and the bottom of the door pillars. Then more serious stuff.
My 2nd car is a Full loaded Mint condition Hyundai Sonata GLS 2004 with 136k when bought came with brand new tires. All it needed was MAF sensor which i have done the job for $16 dollar. Ahhh the joy of living in Arizona. I have a legacy that’s over 15 years old. 311,000 miles on her. No rust at all. Just put on new shocks and suspension bushings all around and she still rides like new.
Bryan Ryan well the region you live in has a lot to do with it as well, I live in Ontario. Our roads are brutal, not quite as bad as Detroit, but definitely close. Tons of potholes and really rough roads. And salt, tons of it in the winter. Salt kills things, my last cummins needed u joints every winter because they would rot internally and blow apart. The exhaust would fall off every year to no end( even after it was replaced with a stainless one( the mounts just rotted) This truck was a plow truck with salter so the front end was really rough. Like 1/4 turn driving straight down the road. I went through the front end every year and it would get better then go back after a couple months. But it only ever blew one trans (plowing snow for 7 years).
I just looked at a 2015 Subaru Legacy earlier today. It has 132,347 miles on it, bought it from another dealership a little bit ago. It came in for a service and inspection. I found coolant stop leak in the cooling system, the passenger front axle boot had a big tear with no grease, and both rear struts were leaking. Recommended replacement of engine, radiator, heater core, and all cooling system hoses due to the stop leak. I also recommended replacement of the axle and both rear struts. The customer contacted the dealership they bought it from and the dealership told them they were on their own. They ended up doing just an oil change and holding off on the service because they weren't sure what they were going to do with it. I feel really bad for them for getting pretty much scammed on that car.
You have the trait that makes it easy to sleep at night and be able to look at the person in the mirror every day. That's what we call personal integrity. The job is hard and down right makes you feel evil sometimes, but people will always thankyou in the end.
I've never seen a car look that good ontop, while being that rusted underneath! And i say that coming from Northern Ontario where they salt the roads 6 months out of the year.

Yes, to answer your question. Dealer probably paid $2,000 at auction. Your other issue, main street getting paved. Just call Dominoes. They'll help you out.
I own an auto repair business that started in 1963. One of the many reasons we have remained in business so long in an ever changing market is honest work. I too see deals like this on a regular basis and it breaks my heart to have to give some one the bad news when they could have avoided it in the first place with a buyers check. I have been able to get people out of these jams just as you did but some times there is no way and they are stuck with a turd. 3 times a year on my tv ad's (right before school starts, post holiday new year and right before tax season) I run a buyers check banner. Amazingly it rarely gets attention but almost without fail on the times it does I usually have to tell the prospective purchaser not to buy the car because of all the faults and damage hidden. If only more people just took the time and had one done they would end up likely saving money in the end. Kudo's for your honesty!
What a thoroughly nice Gentleman, I really like this guy. Honest and goes well above keeps all us subscriber's and keeping his customers happy. Good on you Brother. Keep up the amazing work. Merry Christmas to you and your family Sir 🎅👍
I got so excited when I first saw this video because my next door neighbor(who was from Vermont) had this exact same car. Same year, color, interior and he finally sold it to Carmax because it was so rotted underneath it just wasn't worth saving. Then I realize his had the fairly rare 5 speed transmission where this one was an automatic. But the story was the same, looked beautiful on the exterior and interior but due to 15 years of Vermont weather, the underside was toast. Sad to see it go because the car was so fun to drive with the manual. Great video when Eric O comes to save the day!
I got a 2001 Outback Wagon 5 Speed in 2007. I live in Vermont as well. Nice on the outside but had to be junked in 2014 with 175k on it. Similar fate with rust.
I thought everyone (especially in salted roads states) knew that you gotta take the car to your mechanic before you buy the thing. It's worth the small charge/fee to know what the deal is (or isn't).
@random user That's true enough. If there are issues significant enough for me to notice, then there's no need to proceed at all. Also, never take a spouse who knows nothing about cars with you to shop and/or inspect a vehicle. I made that mistake. Once.
Yeah I always pull a piece of cardboard out of my trunk and the walmart/stanley spotlight. Looking at frame rails/jacking points and complete exhaust for starters. If that shit's gone I don't even start poking around with a screw driver.
Actually, pretty much everytime Eric shows the bottom of one of the cars that has been driven in winter in NY. I have a 1956 Cadillac that has less rust than the subi had after two winters
I am glad I live in the Pacific Northwest coastal region, specially southern British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Northern California coastal region are great!
I had a 94 del sol that gave up the ghost 6 months ago. Surprisingly there was very little rust except here and there. And I live in Minnesota. Land of salt and rotted cars. Wonder if it was the build quality or material quality because of how it was taken care of...I thought it would have looked like this Subaru.
Probably even less. I work at a used dealership as a mechanic and they get cards for 300-400 bucks. Ive sent a few back that look like the one in this video, simply because I am not going to do the work (As we would be losing money) and I am not going to put a car on the lot thats a hazard either. @@genericusername1365 Sadly not everyone does that. Ive seen some pretty shady vehicles lurking in some of the other lots around the area that I would be afraid to even put on a lift for fear the arms would just bust through the rust =/
Good for you for the honest opinion on this vehicle! Good shops like yours are hard to find. I guarantee if I lived near you, you'd have a customer for life.
You can disable the seat belt buzzer on a Subby you just need to turn the key to the on position then buckle/unbuckle the driver's side seat belt 20 or 25 times and then cycle the key. The light and chime should come on for a couple seconds then go out and never annoy you again.
Only problem is the blazing sun does a number on the paint in my experience. You'll see a 1997 Chevy truck barrelling down the road with not a speck of rust, but it will look like they park it in a wind tunnel full of sand on the weekends....
In the southern states, you don’t have to worry about rust but you DO have to worry about the car being a “flood” car, and carefully check it for evidence of mold and mildew. Every area has it’s own set of issues to look for.

Remember the good old days when people would schedule pre buy inspections? I usually did at least one a week for years. They just dried up a few years ago, I don't know what happened. Smart phones= stupid people, I guess...
I actually did that last year. I told the seller that I am interested in his car, and I am willing to pay for pre-purchase inspection and do the carfax on it. Cost me $330 total. I even told him that if the came back bad, I won't be mad, but I can't buy his car either. He knew I was serious, so he didn't consider other people's offer, let me do the inspection and pay the inspection, and the car was mine the next day. However, I did have 2 friends came with me to test the car out and they know cars so I also trust their instincts too.

Use a 10mm to take off the three bolts to check the timing belt condition; 4. look under the oil cap while running to check for blow by and also see if there's any sign of water/coolant in the oil.

I bought a mini like that back in the UK..A real cut and shut!..The fuel pump was electric at the rear when it should have been a mechanical driven by the engine.
I bought a really nice looking Mercury Grand Marquis. It was very noisy, which is unusual. I was underneath the car one day, and noticed a shipping label on the frame. This car had been wrecked, and the frame replaced. It had many electrical gremlins, that I attributed to a damaged wiring harness.
Thanks for taking the time to make this. It helps to know what to look for when buying a used car. For most people, as long as it looks nice and the radio works it's fine 😂
The smart thing would have been for the customer to have paid this mechanic to pre-check the vehicle before buying it! Rust is just too expensive to fix.

He's right. I live down south in the desert and used dealers get these types of cars all the time. You can usually tell because you open the hood and the mounts are rusted and the aluminum parts are corroded, something that should never happen. They usually get it "inspected" by a friend that will pass anything. Then it gets sold to some unsuspecting idiot that just see's a shiny paint job and drives it unaware of the problem till the next "inspection". I saw one car that had the rear quarter panel in the wheel well rotted so bad it had a 2 inch hole that was obvious when you bent over and looked. Somehow it had a valid inspection sticker.

The first good thing I heard about jiffy lube my whole life. Good job, man.

The oil leak is too late to save it from rust.
My truck just blew its oil pressure switch, so it's got a nice rustproof undercoating now, even the back of the tailgate.
lol yeah that will do it. Hopefully it didnt blow the engine. Oh and you need to refresh that undercoating at least once a year.
luckily it was running down the back of the engine and landing directly on the hot exhaust, so i was trailing blue smoke down the highway and the burned oil smell. otherwise i would have not known and blown the engine. caught it in time, thought it was the rear main seal initially but was relieved it was just the switch.

I got so excited when I first saw this video because my next door neighbor(who was from Vermont) had this exact same car. Don't be too anxious to have a street repaved by your shop. A shop near me used to love the side street in disrepair by them. It helped to diagnose suspension issues. It got repaved and now they can't get noises.
That Subaru looks like it has been under sea water for a decade!
10 years in NY will do it....
That's very normal in Canada due to salt , snow
she shouldve taken it to you before she bought it.
Exactly, it's like when people buy the car, THEN get the Carfax (or AutoCheck, or some other NMVTIS service). It's just putting the cart before the horse.w
Great to see there are still honest mechanics out there. Kudo's to tou for being one!
Same in Iowa. BAN THE BRINE!
Mk4 Volkswagens also have a unique smell. Every single one I've owned has had a waxy/crayon smell. Very very odd
They all have that crayon smell. It's in the glue that in the carpeting. You have to replace ALL the carpeting with non-VW carpet to get rid of it. I personally LOVE the smell. It's as unique as that special "glow" from the CEL!
Love seeing Mrs O... so many of us watch your channel and that’s why she received her refund... great job Pal..
LOL. WHY WOULDN'T YOU LOOK UNDER IT WITH A FLASHLIGHT BEFORE BUYING? I would of caught that and RAN
I've sold a lot of cars over the years in the 3K - 8K range. Less than 5% get a prepurchase inspection, less than 10% open the hood, and less than 20% even ask any mechanical questions beyond "is there anything wrong with it?"
Especially since they live there and know this happens. Strange indeed.
Two words: woman buyer
@@ModMINI What should I ask and look for? Being serious.

I found an 03 Baja. Sent the boyfriend to look at it. Fucker never even bent over. Now I'm stuck with a rusted out truck. EX boyfriend now. What is a gal to do? How much can I sell whole to for parting out? Many good things still left :(
The problem is you won't know all that's going on with that thing until you start tearing things apart. Once you start tearing things apart you'll find more things wrong with it so I think it's a good idea to take it back to the dealership
Or in this case, you tear it apart and then super glue it back together.
Man, I'm gonna tell ya about a trip I made last August from Birmingham, Alabama to Warsaw, NY. 1000 miles of uninterupted driving.... and loved every inch of it, keep up the good work and I'll keep watching and keep cussing these broken bolts
It will go in an auction down south, where there are no vehicle inspections. Somebody will buy it and get ripped off. Shame.
Clorox Tree i didn't say they are retarded. Most people on "buy here, finance here" lots don't know where a car came from. They look at the body, the interior and buy it. Last used car I bought, I had the guy put it on a lift, and asked him about the oil leak. It was funny! I finally bought a Villager from him for $1800 and drove it for three years before I gave it away
Stephen Lutz who told u there’s no inspections lmao so is there a magical line where inspections stop
David Pruitt in Kentucky, an out of state vehicle transfer inspection is: brake lights, horn, no window cracks, back up lights, headlights. Deputy Sheriff runs the VIN, then gives you a certificate to give to the County Clerk. They don't even check tire tread, much less the frame. They never open the hood.
If you look at about 15:20 where Eric is doing his extro, check out the funnel hanging on the wall... it looks like a caricature sketch of Eric!
