+South Main Auto Repair - Eric, so heart-warming to see the local kids pop in for a visit, and you treat them the way you did. They are clearly fans of yours, and your encouragement will no doubt play a part in their future, whether that be in the automotive industry or not - they already have your closing credits saying down to a fine art!
PS - give Mrs O a big hug, as she sure deserves one! Like most of us guys, you are lucky to have such a fine companion to share your life with. Top video as always, sir - please keep them coming!

I couldn't understand through my speaker, what was he saying? This is what I was waiting for too and it sounded disappointing when I heard him say "broke when it got here pal". I am hugely disappointed in him if that's what he was saying but I wouldn't expect that of him, so I'm assuming I heard it wrong or it was a joke

One of the things this 69 year old enjoys the most is seeing how little has changed in 50 years, and seeing how *much* has changed. The changes are _subtle_ but profound. Fifty years ago the "fan" belts could not possibly be "serpentine"! The "rubber" molecules known to chemists were incapable of flexing that many times, and were incapable of sticking to pulleys of modern design. All pulleys in 1970 model cars, and their matching belts, were V-pulleys. When under tension the "point" of the V shaped belt was pulled hard into the *one* V grove of the pulley, to create a high friction connection. These belts *always* ran around the _outside_ of the pulleys, as in 5, 6, & 8 in the diagram shown at 16:45, they never went around more than 3 pulleys, and they never ever flexed in the other direction as in 4 & 7 in the diagram shown at 16:45. It is a delight to see these new belts. The "rubber" of 1970 would stretch such that the "tensioner" would need to be adjusted at every 6,000 mile tune-up, by loosening a bolt on the alternator, levering it with a screwdriver to rotate out and tighten the belt, and then tightening the bolt to hold the new tension. This inherent stretching made it impossible to have a non-metallic timing belt; all 1970 timing belts were metal chains.

When I remove/replace a hood, I'm in the habit of taking a 4" piece of "pool noodle" tubular foam with a slit in it and sliding it over the corners of the hood. It completely eliminates the possibility of damaging anything while working with the hood. If I'm working alone it is even more helpful. I can rest the opposite corner of the hood on the vehicle while I start the bolt and nothing is damaged even though the hood stays reasonably in place. Even with two people I still use this hack. It has probably saved me a ton of paint repair cost over the years......

Eric, just finished watching your Grand Caravan engine swap. Just an awesome reference for me. I've owned my 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan for 15 years and I've replaced just about everything except the motor. With 242K miles it's been one heck of a journey to keep her going. You are the real deal in my book, I enjoy seeing you deal with all of the unexpected gotchas of car repairs, it lets me know you're real. Keep up the great work with your videos, and thank your wife and daughter for all the help. They are great, reminds me of my wife and daughter when they help me with my car repairs.

I've noticed data PID issues with my Autel DS708 and MD802, both. For example, on my 02 GMC Sierra the auto transfer case data PIDS show opposite of what they are actually indicating. If I have it in 2WD it shows the indicator for 2WD "off" and the other indicators "on." If I select 4WD then it shows 4WD "off" and all the others "on." It's a great tool and I wouldn't give it up but it's not perfect.
Great video, Eric. I think I've shaved about 40 years off my daughters'' lives by scaring them like that. I've never seen a kid laugh and cry at the same time until I had my own kids and scared the living daylights out of them. Loads of fun! They've even gotten where they are good enough to do it right back to me later.
It's so neat that you allow those neighborhood kids into the shop, let them see what you're doing, and talk with them. I remember some folks like that when I was a kid. It doesn't seem like much but that can make a big impact on a kid's life and their future. They''ll remember Mr. O that always took an interest in them and let them see what you did in your shop. Maybe they'll even want to work on cars when they get bigger, even if only their own cars. That's a win in my book. Big thumbs up from me!

I just got to say, “Love your video series!” There were times when watching I thought you might be the reincarnation of my own father. Dad retired as a dealership mechanic in 1993 and then ran his own shop at home for another decade or so after that. He drafted me to help out in his shop from time to time when I wasn’t working at my day-job elsewhere. I learned a whole lot from him doing various repair jobs in his shop, but obviously not nearly as much as he knew.
Having the knowledge and experience to do the work you do is awesome! But you sharing that with the rest of world is even better!!!
As far as a parts supplier goes, the commercial rep makes all the difference in the world. My dad had a really good rep at the local O’Reilly’s though I do better these days with my local AutoZone as DIY’er. Sometimes an online source can get the parts I need faster and cheaper with the same quality for the parts.
Please keep up the good work you’re doing and posting on UA-cam.

Once in a while, I miss being in the service bays,as the only 4x master tech in the shop and the only guy who could open an engine for things like a piston replacement. Then, I watch a couple of your videos, and I get to have the part of the experience I once enjoyed..I don't have to try to converse with any other techs who are intellectually challenged, and I don't have to worry about getting jobs approved, getting the right parts, or trying to explain to a customer that his windshield wiper problem has nothing to do with the fuel pump we just replaced. Instead, I get to watch a guy work who is very much like I was, except he went ahead and opened his own shop and has a great wife to help him. Good for you, Eric.

Excellent video, 10 out of 10 stars! Braaaavo!!!
Being in the Salt belt also, I had my concerns regarding touching anything I did not have to, especially any components underneath. A couple tid bits I offer to fine tune this job a little for the next time.....
A, It is not necessary to remove the exhaust crossover pipe.I had enough of a fight with the down pipe. You are way better with the Fire Wrench than I am. I got what was left of the nuts loose with an induction heater.
B, I left the lower fore and aft cross member in place and found with the motor mount unbolted from the RH fame rail and undone at the cross member, lift the engine enough to get about a 3/4"nut the tall way between the bell housing and Cross member. This eliminates the need to support the transmission with anything else. You could also move the vehicle if you needed to push it out of the bay.
C, There is plenty of room to tie the AC compressor out of the way to the lower radiator support without discharging the system. On many jobs I would not hesitate recovering and breaking AC lines to make it easier, just did not find it necessary on this one.
D, Your suggestion about removing the AC studs is indeed a HUGE help. Prior to installing the replacement engine I removed the oil filter and O2 sensor also. These items really make it less of a tight fit with them out of the way.
E, I found it necessary to heat the water pump bolts quite a bit to get them to come loose without breaking on the replacement engine. 1 snapped on the old motor, no worries about that but I wanted to avoid a repeat with the other motor, Also, the factory gasket is real nice, fortunately for me it was available at a local dealer
Thanks for making this video series and doing it in such detail. BTW, I would have likely missed the knock sensor if you had not mentioned it. Thank you again.

The late 90s Dodge Caravans weren't bad, it was just the engines that were trash. My dad had a 1998 Dodge Caravan with a 3.0L V6 and got 313,131 miles on it. It happened to be Friday the 13th right when it rolled over that final 1 when an asshole black guy in a shitty POS car came flying on the onramp on the freeway so fast that he flew across four lanes of traffic, hit the median concrete wall and bounced across four lanes of traffic again and hit my dads Caravan in the rear drivers side. He hit the van so hard that it snapped the rear axle in half and put a ripple in the frame from the back to the front.
I was superstitious for him for years after that and kept telling him to not go out on Friday the 13th.
Anyway, the 3.0L V6 was a Mitsubishi engine designed specifically for the Japanese market, which was a problem for the American market. They were designed to last only about 50-60k miles due to the regulations about vehicles in Japan where cars with that many miles are generally sent to the scrap heap. It used an all aluminum alloy block and heads (IIRC) and didn't have cast iron liners, so it wore out quickly. By the time my old man had rolled 100k miles on the engine, both heads had to be replaced, as well as a ring job due to low compression on several cylinders and oil consumption. By 200k miles, it was burning oil pretty badly and left a cloud of blue smoke everywhere. By 300k, it needed liberal quantities of lucas oil to maintain any sort of oil capacity and it looked like an 1868 coal burning locomotive going down the road.
But the engine was really the only major issue he ever had with that van. The transmission and most everything else had held up well with minimal trouble. The body had been in great shape up until the asshole totaled it.

Sweeeeet! What a job! Another successful mission at SMA! :)
Not so much over here. Got a '04 Olds Alero, less than 64k miles, 3400 V6 - decided to spit the rocker arm bolt out of the head, threads and all, while the owner was headed down the road. What a racket that thing was making! Towed it here. Long story longer, ended up being the #1 exhaust rocker, which is super easy - only had to remove the coil pack, alternator and bracket to access the valve cover. Pulled the rocker out by hand - no tools needed, lol.
Anyway, got a 8 x 1.25 Time-Sert installed, then, had to slice the ends of it to match that machined cut in the base that the rocker pedestal sits in - that was a PITA. Figured I'd have that thing headed down the road in less than an hour ... until I started tightening the rocker bolt. Noticed the valve & spring moving downward. Dammit! I sent my borescope down the pushrod hole to check for possible debris. None. Stuck a long wire down in the lifter oil hole watching on the borescope - saw the top of the lifter move as it should - nothing stuck in the oil hole. Figured I'd just install it and let it run a minute, hoping it would bleed back down. Nope - dead miss due to the valve hanging WAY open - probably 1/4" ! WTF. Out of ideas now - either I button it back up and run it several minutes and hope for the best, or tear that SOB down to remove that lifter - may have got damaged from running with no load on the pushrod. Hole looks straight, threads are perfect - handled the torque and 1.5 minutes run time no problem.
If you guys have any ideas, I'm all ears!

Hey Eric I'm sure you know about the vacuum air bleed tool for coolant systems. It bleeds and fills the coolant system under 5 minutes. Purges all air out and sucks coolant into system. No air locks. Defiantly one of the best tool especially for time savers. And those hard to bleed cars

Eric, I noticed you don't wear gloves when doing the easy things like dropping the engine in but you do where gloves when doing the hard stuff like installing zip ties.

salty sma video? I remember the AvE comment. that said, I think your the only real tech on UA-cam. I value your videos above all on here. I feel guilty paying for my degree, when I learned more from you. need $70k? lol. thx for everything, best tech I know, based mostly on humility/experience. btw, wife said nothing when that mini Astro ratchet showed up. gonna try that air hammer next.

    Hi Eric,
Just happened upon your channel a few days ago. Great videos, lots of good info. Wish your shop was around here, all we have are rip off parts changers. It's awesome that you keep at it till you find the real problem. Took my 2006 Taurus in for a check charging system light, got it back with a new alternator and battery. Thought it was a bad ground but I couldn't find it. Needless to say, they've changed the alternator twice but now my headlights just go dim as I'm driving down the road, or whenever I use an accessory.............Unreal!!
    Sorry, had to vent.
Look forward to more videos, thanks.

That was great.... 'A day in the shop meets part five'.
Hire them kids to clean-up they're a couple of characters. They should be able to do oil changes in six months.
With all the extra time you spend I am very appreciative. Didn't learn nothing, but it sure was a fun ride!

Can you do a video on air ratio sensors and what they look like on your scope. I really like the way you explain sensors and scope patterns. Just a suggestion. Thanks for taking the time to do those videos keep em coming!
