I love watching the younger generations reactions to the older classic rock. I had the Mark, Don, and Mel tape of Grand Funk Railroad. As a teenager, I parked my car behind my Mom's car, blocking her in. Since I was sleeping, she just took my car (1963 Chevy Impala 2 door) to the grocery store instead, and this song was just starting in the tape player. She had to pull the car over, and try to figure out how to either eject the tape, or turn it down (mid 1970's). Priceless memory.
Saw them several times back in 70s. This was my favorite song of theirs for a long time. Listen to Brewer on those drums, just constant. Still like them.
It gives me extreme pleasure to see young people (I’m 69) discovering music from high school days. GFR was a band to see live and this performance proves it.
Just three guys making that big sound. All of them talented beyond measure. They were one of my favorite groups back in the day. I still have all of their albums.

1) GFR sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles. 2) Check out their first "live" album-3 piece power rock at its finest. 3) They had some solid hits after Todd Rundgren started producing their albums. 4) I saw every show they played at Public Hall in Cleveland and the show at the Toledo Sports Arena where they recorded their second "live" album. GFR is why I started my first band. Glad you've found them.
GFR are the main pioneers of heavy, fast and refined Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and subsequently trash metal! (i.e. all powerful, loud and fast rock ..) Listen to the first albums of DP and LZ, 1968 - it doesn't even smell like heavy, loud, and even more high-speed and technical hard rock, - solid, unhurried, not a lot weighted rhythm & blues! Moreover, LZ 1 almost all consists of covers (shame !!!), DP has the same story .. And here, after the release of GFR, in 1969, 2 powerful albums at once ("One Time" and "Red Album", which then quickly went platinum), and one is heavier than the other, and after GFR began to collect stadiums and rattle all over the world, selling about 50,000 tickets in 2 hours (a record of that time), everyone quickly "changed their shoes" and began to play a powerful and hard hard rock !.

Coming of age in the greatest musical era of our time (mid 60's through mid 70's) I was very familiar with Grand Funk Railroad's hits that were played on the radio. But I had never heard or seen this performance until about a month ago when I stumbled upon it while watching "reaction videos". Since then, I have watched every reaction video to this performance that I have found. This is the most amazing, intense, passionate live performance I have EVER seen! These guys were at their peak here, with Mark (the lead singer) being only 19 years old, while the other two guys were 20. In this performance everything was at it's peak: their musicianship, the vocals, the front man and the group's stage presence. By the end of this performance, I felt like I needed a cigarette and a shower. I likely will die before I see another performance as amazing as this.

When they opened a show for someone, they always "Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep !! With a following of Rabid fans they soon became the Main Act !! And filled stadums across America and the Globe !! btw, When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !! GFR was the originaters of "Stadium Rock" they sold out Shea, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took 3-weeks to sell-out Shea !! I saw them in '71 at Pirates World in Dania, Fl. Promoters sold 15.000 tickets for a 10,000 venue and the people rioted and over-turned 3 Miami police cars !! If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and left them NOTHING, they would have been the biggest Band EVER !! Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to ever come out of Flint, Michigin (except maybe the GM Buick). Long Live GFR and Mark Farner !!
I'm from the Detroit area and was in high school when they were big. I've always heard of them upstaging their headliners and just grin. I know about the 72 hour record for Shea Stadium but have heard that it took the Beatles 7 days to sell out used in the same sentence. But the record sellout still stands and worth noting. One of the most hard rocking bands back then. Wolf Hunterz blew it though. They should have grabbed the live performance video of Inside Looking Out that was done at Shea. Have a good day.

Fun fact!!! Grand Funk opened for Led Zepplin, Peter Grant which was Led Zepplin touring manager got pissed and made Grand Funk get off the stage because he was worried they upstaged Led Zepplin. Obtw i grew up not far from these guys. I didnt know them but I have seen there recording studio they built to practice and lay down tracks. I love all the music that came out of Michigan.

Zepplin's manager assaulted Grand Funks manager and threatened him to get your band off the stage. Terry Knight went on stage and said Led Zepplin doesn't want Grand Funk to play. Well the crowd went crazy and stormed the stage, throwing chairs and they had to call in the riot police , This was Olympia stadium in Detroit. 3 days later in Cleveland Ohio the same thing happen, the crowd loved Grand Funk and wanted them to keep playing. 3 days later Led Zepplin threw Grand Funk off their tour. Grand Funk also played a double bill with Zepplin at Boston Garden and blew Zepplin off then too ! The crowd kept chanting " Grand Funk ".

I was 14 when I saw them at RFK Stadium in DC! I'll NEVER forget it! My first rock concert was The Doors, then Jimi Hendrix and Janice at Atlantic City Pop Festival! I was a fortunate child then I went to Woodstock!

In spite of them earning 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide, they are hated by critics and the music industry alike even still this very day. Most of us who really love, respect, and appreciate them are in our late 50's to up into their 70's. Seeing you two as our generation would say "diggin it" does my heart good and gives me hope that younger generations will recognize real talent and real unadulterated unsanitized music.

Grand Funk put the FUNK in their music! Mark Farner, guitarist, Don Brewer, drums, and Mel Schacher, Bassist. Mel and Don still continues today with GFR. Don used to be a guest on his friend's radio show with his wife, Sunny Quinn. Sunny was a radio DJ on local station in South Florida. Sunny And Don helped in charities for the local area especially the holidays. Don was part of a band, Bob Seger and Silver Bullet Band. Bob is one of his closest friends plus native Michigander. Finally, you doing some classic rock that influenced today's rockers including yourselves.

i loved your reaction. i saw them in new orleans 50 years ago (aug 1970) the summer after my high school graduation, my first concert. They blew me away. I can not believe they are not in rock and roll hall of fame ( should be hall of shame) BTW, as far as I know, this is a song about being in prison (inside looking out) for marijuana, hence the reference to making "nickel bags". also the oldest one here is 21, the others 20 and 18! Three youngsters making all that music. oh yeah, Mark Farner , lead guitarist, also played the organ on some songs.

@@aryansigrid - I’m not sure what his views were in 1969 Aryan, but he’s a conservative Christian today. I saw an interview where he talked about teaching Frank Zappa how to shoot firearms, who was staunchly anti gun before that. Frank went on to be an NRA lifetime member.
I was a huge fan after the "Survival" album came out in 1971 when I was in Junior High. I highly recommend their cover of "Gimme Shelter" from that album.

Hendrix and Cream should be next on their quest of the classics. Especially, Eric Clapton, only 3 times Inductee of Rock Hall: Yardbirds with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, Cream with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, and his solo career. Eric at 75 still rocking today!
This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.

I got to see them do this live at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN in 1970. Also saw Steppenwolf and Led Zeppelin in 1970, the year I graduated from high school, at the same place. It was good to be alive then!
Mark Farner - Woman wanted him. Men wanted to be him. I'm proud to say that I became a fan at 10 yrs old (bought this album when it first came out) and never stopped. As a guitarist, I also never stopped playing along to their music. When I had my Marshall half-stack, the volume of the stereo along with my amp, made the needle jump, so I had to record my album on 6, and then moved to CDs, and now that I've been re-building my vinyl collection for the past 4-5 years, and somehow, I lost my, copy of this Live album that I bought new in maybe 12-13 years old in the 70's. I still had the huge poster that came with it! Argh! I was absolutely sick over it. Fast forward to my 60th bday, (people always peg my age in the 40s, which I have no problem with!), my sweet wife found an original COPY in excellent condition that had the POSTER (very difficult to track down!). I'm framing it for my studio. Great stuff. Well known fact, maybe already mentioned here, but they sold out Shea Stadium in 72 hours! Broke the Beatles record even! I mean that was unheard of. The stadium was shaking so much that the stadium architect, owner, or mgmt were worried about something collapsing.

according to my parwnts they weren't underrated in the 70s, they were competing with The Dead for top live band and music fans knew it.
They were great. Mark Farner is one of the best rock guitarists ever. It is unbelievable that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

My older brother took me to see them at Cobo hall in Detroit in April 1971.. Just before I left for Vietnam.. great concert..

In spite of them earning 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide, they are hated by critics and the music industry alike even still this very day. Most of us who really love, respect, and appreciate them are in our late 50's to up into their 70's. Seeing you two as our generation would say "diggin it" does my heart good and gives me hope that younger generations will recognize real talent and real unadulterated unsanitized music.

They were big at our high school. I was in a parking lot during one of their concerts and they were so loud I didn't even have to go inside.

Grand Funk put the FUNK in their music! Mark Farner, guitarist, Don Brewer, drums, and Mel Schacher, Bassist. Mel and Don still continues today with GFR. Don used to be a guest on his friend's radio show with his wife, Sunny Quinn. Sunny was a radio DJ on local station in South Florida. Sunny And Don helped in charities for the local area especially the holidays. Don was part of a band, Bob Seger and Silver Bullet Band. Bob is one of his closest friends plus native Michigander. Finally, you doing some classic rock that influenced today's rockers including yourselves.

i loved your reaction. i saw them in new orleans 50 years ago (aug 1970) the summer after my high school graduation, my first concert. They blew me away. I can not believe they are not in rock and roll hall of fame ( should be hall of shame) BTW, as far as I know, this is a song about being in prison (inside looking out) for marijuana, hence the reference to making "nickel bags". also the oldest one here is 21, the others 20 and 18! Three youngsters making all that music. oh yeah, Mark Farner , lead guitarist, also played the organ on some songs.

This is what your boomer parents were listening to. This was what I grew up with. Rock music of that time was unforgettable. The music critics of the time shit all over them. Seeing them in performances like this make s you wonder 'What were they thinking?" This is the shit! Thanks for taking a step back into the past.

@@aryansigrid - I’m not sure what his views were in 1969 Aryan, but he’s a conservative Christian today. I saw an interview where he talked about teaching Frank Zappa how to shoot firearms, who was staunchly anti gun before that. Frank went on to be an NRA lifetime member.

GFR, Ted(the motor city madman) Nugent, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, and the MC5 was the southeast Michigan/Detroit area wave of rock back in the 70's.

I was a huge fan after the "Survival" album came out in 1971 when I was in Junior High. I highly recommend their cover of "Gimme Shelter" from that album.
Its a shame we dont ever hear of survival much easily their best

Hendrix and Cream should be next on their quest of the classics. Especially, Eric Clapton, only 3 times Inductee of Rock Hall: Yardbirds with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, Cream with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, and his solo career. Eric at 75 still rocking today!
Not quite the first trio band. Let's not forget about Cream.

This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.

I got to see them do this live at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN in 1970. Also saw Steppenwolf and Led Zeppelin in 1970, the year I graduated from high school, at the same place. It was good to be alive then!
Mark Farner - Woman wanted him. Men wanted to be him. I'm proud to say that I became a fan at 10 yrs old (bought this album when it first came out) and never stopped. As a guitarist, I also never stopped playing along to their music. When I had my Marshall half-stack, the volume of the stereo along with my amp, made the needle jump, so I had to record my album on 6, and then moved to CDs, and now that I've been re-building my vinyl collection for the past 4-5 years, and somehow, I lost my, copy of this Live album that I bought new in maybe 12-13 years old in the 70's. I still had the huge poster that came with it! Argh! I was absolutely sick over it.
Fast forward to my 60th bday, (people always peg my age in the 40s, which I have no problem with!), my sweet wife found an original COPY in excellent condition that had the POSTER (very difficult to track down!). I'm framing it for my studio.
Great stuff. Well known fact, maybe already mentioned here, but they sold out Shea Stadium in 72 hours! Broke the Beatles record even! I mean that was unheard of. The stadium was shaking so much that the stadium architect, owner, or mgmt were worried about something collapsing.
