~Tapping into Your Potential Where Others Saw None~
This one right here… SHEESH! What’s up Gang! How are y’all doing?
Yes sir!
Nuttin wrong with a little combustible botanicals...
🤘😎🤘
Doin' great! came to check the Rocknroll ✌️
Goose-bumps on the solos at the end.
You are right, nobody wanted to follow them. Grand Funk opened for Led Zeppelin, first comcert on the tour, half way through the set, Zeppelin's manager told GF manager to get them off stage, he wouldn't do it until he grabbed him by the throat. They shut the power off the stage, cut the performance, Led Zeppelin didn't want to be upstaged. GF also sold out Shey stadium faster than the Beatles.
One of my favorite bands and my favorite song. These guys killed it! Surprisingly they have never been inducted into the Rock & Roll hall of fame. Such a shame.
remember when..... people played music, wrote songs, and everybody grooved on it . We need that back.
These guys were only 18-20 years old at this time. Imagine that! Pure talent.
Killer Jam by America’s premier power trio Great vid
Nobody does that thing where the bass follows the melody of the guitar anymore! I love it!
One of my frivolous uses of a time machine would be to watch legendary bands play legendary music live all the time.
One of the BEST kick a** rock trios in rock history. Met Mark on several occasions back stage. A true gentleman. He actually makes you feel comfortable and at ease. Sad that the group did him dirty years ago and coerced him out of the band. We fans have to pay the price for that. The new GFR does not sound the same without Mark. My personal opinion.
No Farner No Funk!!!!
Melissa Ward here. Totally agree. Saw Mark and g rand funk a few times. Awesome performances
You are absolutely correct.
I did go and see the reincartion in Rock Hill SC
It was no were near the same. Don And Mel should be ashamed of themselves and how they destroyed a great band.
Mark Farner WAS Grand Funk!
Love Mark! I was teenager and met him backstage! Got a guitar pick I still have!
best live concert I've ever seen and I've seen many great concert!!
My all-time favorite song by this band!!
GFR is one the the best Rock bands of the 70’s YET cannot get inducted into the Rock Hall!
A must (you will appreciate): Captain/Closer to my Home
It’s almost a crime that they aren’t in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Absolutely love Grand Funk Railroad.❤️✌️🌼
Who cares what industry insiders think of them. We all know what a kick-ass, in-your-face, great blues rock powerhouse they were.🤟
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke!!!
@@michaelglick1287 And no one is laughing 🙃
@@michaelglick1287 And that’s just sad it should mean something!
They were brilliant!!! When talent mattered!!!
These were some BAD DUDES, man. They went HARD.
Saw them in concert a couple of years after this. I was a little high (just a little) but I'll never forget Mark Farner shirtless, tight red pants, armband..& by then his hair was down past the middle of his back. My little teenaged heart almost couldn't take it.
And oh, yeah, they were great. Amazing how much good music 3 guys could put out. That's why it's called a power trio.
Check out "I'm Your Captain". Interesting tale of a mutiny.
"Mean Mistreater" is a favorite. And "We're An American Band" was probably their biggest radio hit.💙☮💙
Oh yeah, he's definitely hot 🔥
Dont forget the gorgeous bass player too.
Mean Mistreater is also a favorite of mine. Live in Jacksonville, FL (1970) is the best imo. I don't think there's video for that performance but the audio/vocals is great. It's the same version from their Greatest Hits album so that should speak for itself. But Van, you should definitely hit We're An American Band next, also Footstompin' Music. The thing to remember about these 60's and 70's bands is they didn't have the tech we have now. No 'in ears' , no wireless mics or guitars, etc. I don't know much about the mixing and engineering side of it but I know that has come a long way since then too. And they just kill it. One final note, after you become acquainted with their catalog, you too will probably be just as confused as the rest of their fans as to how they are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They should be acknowledged. They are awesome.
@@michellemiles9966 There is a video for "Mean Mistreated" Mark does it on piano. Marks older and does it great. I love that song too.
All of us teenage girls in Michigan felt the same....
That groove though 🤯 An epic, raw performance. One of the best IMO.
This was long before reefer was legal in Michigan where these guys are from. Didn't stop anyone and dirt cheap. Yes, he has a great rocker voice. Glad you enjoyed this.
Oh yeah! Now you’re talkin’! I love this! Nothing fancy either. Between the three of them, they are just 19 and 20 years old. Farner’s mom bought him that $200 guitar, and check out that drum kit, it’s a basic, beginner kit. And ALL THAT came out of only three guys! The rest of their music isn’t as heavy as this one. I think you’ll really like it.
Amazing performance, for sure! 🔥❤️🔥
Definitely don’t sound like just three guys rockin out. That’s fa damn sho
Did you notice the tape and green paint job on Mark's guitar? It was hollow so he stuffed it with foam rubber, covered the holes with masking tape and painted it. He said in an interview it was the only guitar he could find and buy on credit at the time.
Is that an ES120?
I always felt that Grand Funk was one of those often overlooked great bands from the 70s. They were awesome!
They weren't overlooked! In the 1970's they were HUGE! In 1971, the group sold out a concert at Shea Stadium faster than The Beatles had in 1965.!
Ahh… sweet Michigan. Thanks for sharing this one - I hadn’t seen nor heard it before, but GFR was IT.
Great reaction! That long haired handsome man on lead guitar and vocals is Mr Mark Farner. It has been my pleasant honor to have him as one of my neighbors for 30 some years. He is as kind and gentle a family man as he is talented. I do not give my admiration or comments lightly and I admire Mark greatly. Last year he sold out our local casino in under thirty minutes. Wife couldn't get out to the garage fast enough to tell me. Missed out getting tickets. Mark has ten years on me and he still kicks it on stage like that. Keep on rocking young man! 😊👍✌
Good one. I have been trying to get Half to do this performance. The Animals did this song first. I feel Grand Funk Railroad adopted it with a greater version. Way greater by arrangement.
I’m going to check out The Animals doing it next
Mark put all the reefer words in it! I just don’t think Eric Burden and his Animals can come close to the way Farner and GF does it! What a song!
@@timothysarris9742 I agree.
I never get tired of watching this performance! I would say watch their video for "We're an American band" and then the live performance for "Heartbreaker" and "Some kind of wonderful" "I'm your Captain/Closer to home". Thanks for checking this out! Made my day. ❤🍀
Such an under appreciated band. They deserved so much more.
They had several gold records in the 70s... they actually made a lot of money and sold out stadiums
@@modeljetjuggernaut4864 I meant in the long run. They've been forgotten. Unlike the Beatles and Zeppelin, for example.
@@digimortalone2759 oic agreed
@@modeljetjuggernaut4864 if you want to know the truth, then at the end of 1970, Grand Funk Railroad already had 4 gold albums, including a powerful double concert Live Album. And for this 1970 they have sold more CDs than any other artist or band in the world!
So glad I got to see them ❤
You got it right Van, we were always high for their concerts! I think you would like Mean Mistreater and Heartbreaker by them. GFR put out some amazing music considering there were only 3 of them! ☮💕🎶🎸🎤
This is my favorite song ever by my favorite band, killer solos.
A very talented trio Damming! These guys were Good! BLOOP! BLOOP!
I’m blown away by this performance, Lord!
Ooohhh, Van! You nailed it! My men weren't called "Grand FUNK" for no reason. They combined rock, metal & soul expertly. You might want to react to "I'm Your Captain", which is hauntingly smooth; "Some Kind of Wonderful" - just a terrific "feel good" song; & "The Loco-Motion", a cover of a Motown classic. Thanks for rockin' with GFR!
I'm 59 and still rock with them especially when I'm high. Been smoking weed since I was 16. 🤟🤟😃😃 And I really love to see you react to alot of bands that I really love and I listened to in my teen years. You keep up the great work !!!! 👍👍🤗🤗
We’re so lucky to have this treasure for our viewing and listening pleasure 😊
WHO ME??? 🤣🤣😏
Grand Funk Railroad was the first band I ever saw in concert. I saw them in 1971, 1972 and 1974. They are to this day my favorite rock band and now you see why. Despite playing for a small TV studio audience on a tiny stage they gave an electrifying performance that 52 years later people are still marveling at.
Been smoking weed since I was 16 and I am 70 now and doing just fine. Saw them at the Forum in Inglewood as a lead up band to Ten Years After and Grand Funk totally stole the show.
Believe it or not, these guys in their hey day they were hated by music critics and the music industry at large, saying that they lacked any real talent or music abilities they were merely making loud noise not music. This was in spite of the fact they earned 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide and also they were bigger and out selling groups like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath.
Went to a concert, took 3 days for my hearing to come back! Thanks for this reaction, one of my fave groups💖
This was first done three or four years earlier by the band The Animals and was written by them.
This song still gives me goosebumps listening to it. They were such a tight 3 piece band and kicked ass. They were so heavy.
4:55 We're not all like "it's not good for you" plenty of us are right there with you. Especially listening to Grand Funk Railroad lol
My older sister brought home "Grand Funk Railroad Live" when I was 9yrs old. I took over that album from her.
I looked up that lyric you asked about and it goes: "And when my time is up you'll be my reefer". :D There's several references in there. Now I understand why I didn't hear this on on the radio when it first came out.... Plus, it's a bit long to get much radio play. American radio stations preferred to play songs that averaged three and a half minutes or less. It helped them increase the amount of time available for advertisements. BTW: The guys in GFR were from the Flint, MI community and they took their bands' name from the railroad that ran through it: Grant Trunk Railroad.
This song was originally done by the Animals. Mel Schacher ( pronounced Shocker ) They are all still performing. Mark just did a South American tour to sold out arenas, and he did this at 72 years old !! IMHO Don Brewer is the finest rock drummer ever and Mel lives up to his nickname, "the god of thunder "
Hey Van, I am sorry that you had not heard Grand Funk before now. This is a deep rabbit hole that needs to be explored. So many great songs to discover. Enjoy!
GFR outsold The Beatles and Elvis combined !! The best thing that ever came out of Flint, Mich, (except for maybe the BUICK) !! They were the originators of "Stadium Rock", and were the first band to fill giant arenas across the USA !! "Mis-management and fraud", by their appointed "friend", caused the band to fall apart. Awesome band !! Sad Story... Great reaction.
That is definitely not true videos of the best selling band of all time and Elvis is top 5 but they definitely were a huge band
Grand Funk Railroad easily one of the Greatest Rock N Roll Bands ever. 🤘😎 This Live Performance is the Epitome of Rock N Roll in the 60s n 70s... 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼 Dam Hippies be High AF🦹
You should definitely check Robin Trower "Too Rolling Stoned", "Bridge of Sighs", "I Can't Wait Much Longer", "Daydream", "About to Begin" just to name a few great tracks.
Right on brother, I agree. But I'm from Michigan and I do love me some Grand Funk, "Time Machine", "Into the Sun", Live
"Heartbreaker ", and some "Foot Stomping Music"
My first concert, early 70's. I was about 10. My older brother took me. The arena was full of "smoke", my first contact high. Went home and eat a whole box of cereal, next morning my mom mad as hell, eat a weeks' worth in one night.
Best story!!!. Thank you. 😊
@@Music-Is-Real-Love . you're welcome. true story. The opening act was a band called Climax Blues Band. They were great too.
@@justinpolk1331 I might have heard of that band but I'm not sure.
Looking that one up. 😃
Thanks for appreciating the funk. Love you all
I woke up with the bass line from this song in my head but couldn’t remember what song it was for the life of me. Thanks for helping me remember!!! Awesome performance
Speaking of following them. They were opning up for Led Zeppelin on there first or 2nd U S tour and early on were kicked off the tour because they were blowing Zeppelin off the stage. They were gettimg the bigger crowd reation. Also shortly after this t v appearance they sold out Shea Stadium faster then The Beatles did. In the early 70's they were the biggest band in the States.
Never knew that! Wow that’s a concern! I had the biggest crush on Mark! My son has my old guitar and Mark’s pick!
Back to ya to listen again!! Loved your reaction ❤
Yep, few people understand that this song can only truly be appreciated when listened to with the right equipment, because this was created by & for those on a level of higher learning. Thanks for sharing this with all of us! Keep Smiling.....
The statement " Who ever is following them i feel bad for you" was a true issue. They toured with zepplin and was removed the tour because Zepplins manager saw that they rocking so hard that yes they were hard to follow. Same thing happened to Skynard when they opened for bands.
Interesting information, there have been many times I’ve went to shows and the opening bands just rest it up.
I can totally believe that!!.
Great Band and my favorite song of theirs. Their song "Time Machine" is blues oriented and "Mean Mistreater" "We're an American Band" are
a few of many great songs...
YES! Love it! You made my morning(6:22 am here in N.C.) I`m ready to start this day off right! Thanks :) Another great I love by them is Some Kind Of Wonderful! Keep On Rockin' lol have to add that as I am watching this it is a wake and bake session :)
I was 13 when I 1st heard them. 52 yrs later I'm still rock'n out to them. 3 guys making some of the GREATEST music EVER ! Love your reaction to this jam. Gotta go into the garage ( hopefully you've got sound out there) & listen to their entire LP. Away for the wife & responsible's. Also what's the music during your final thought's on Inside Looking Out ? Yeah, I'm interested in who did those sounds.
GFR was the first band l saw in concert, l was 15yrs old and blown away by their performance that l've never stopped going to concerts til now 😔
If you like this one,try live “ Heartbreaker”….it is fire. Two great facts about them…they sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles did,and Led Zeppelin kicked them off as an opening act after just two days because they were too good probably…no one really knows.
Dude, Led Zepplin shut down GFR in the middle of their concert while they were playing inside looking out.
They opened for Zepplin at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. and the fans were rocking hard and loving GFR and Zepplin actually shut off the power in the middle of the song.
GFRs manager got on stage and said Led Zepplin is afraid of following
Grand Funk. The crowd went crazy and rioted storming the stage and throwing chairs , The riot police were
called in and Zep never got to play . A few nights later in Ohio the same thing happened and Zepplin threw
Grand Funk off their tour the next day.
That's the best I got that album at 13 and loved that song
Could never stand Led Zeppelin what’s his name myself…I’m serious! Never did impress me..,too full of himself…never liked men like that!😂😂😂
Both, true statements, my Brother! Saw them 3 times in the early 70's! What a
concert/show they put on! Pure energy, pure fire, pure entertainment! Hardly sat
down during the ENTIRE SHOW! Still listen to their music! BTW, Mark, Don and I
are the same age 😉!
Man...GFR!!! They really knew how to make awesome music and have fun! I quite enjoy their sound and forgot how much I dig these guys :)
Three badass F#&%IN white boyzzz throwin DOWN !!!!!! Listen to this smokin weed and it sends you through the ROOF!!!!! PS: That TSHIRT says it ALL. You KICKED ASS on this one man. You really FELT these guys and it was BEAUTIFUL to watch. One of THE greatest bands EVER!!!!! FANTASTIC reaction.LOVED IT BRO.✌❤
Grand Funk is by far the greatest American band bar none and the greatest band never inducted into The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Once you listen to more of their catalog, you’ll see how versatile this band is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Badasses, all of them! Carmine Appice, the drummer, can sing while playing (tough), and was admired for his mad skills, by none other than BONZO.
The drummer is Don Brewer, not Carmine Appice.
I've loved this band ever since I saw them play in 1970, when I was 11. First indoor concert, first time I got kicked out of a concert for letting people in free, got back in ten minutes later by someone also letting people in free. They are all great players, I especially love the bass player, with his completely laid back attitude while laying down cool bass lines. Good post
1969 was a great year! And I listen to this song all the time and was already in the LFR fam, and that was fun as hell watching you react to it Van! Mark Don and Mel rock it all the way!!💜🇺🇸👍
I continue to be surprised and impressed with your knowledge of music, Van.
These guys should be in the Rock Hall of Fame.
Mark Farner had just turned 21 in September when this was done in Nov of 1969. I saw them live in a small venue, in 73 or so, and they did their thing which resulted in melting the place, what you saw kept going song after song...I was impressed, humbled, entertained, and literally in awe.
Those boys worked their ass off on this one! ☺♥
I’m proud of you, Van. I would love to see you do a reaction to Johnny and Edgar Winter singing “Tobacco Road.” I’ll bet you $14 that you would love it too. 🤑
He would go crazy for it me thinks. :)
I have seen this performance many times during the last few weeks.
Love!
I just love seeing everyone hearing this for the first time.
We all agree, so groovy.
Man I love music from this era this is real music Raw and in your face Back when they actually played instruments
Yes!!
that was my favorite song in the 6th grade, got my rock n roll start with them!
A lot of great talent came from S.E Michigan
Great reaction. I saw GFR live in 1971 and 1973 and this is my all time favorite song by them. Yep, I'm old but I got to witness the birth of rock and roll, metal and Motown. The best music ever!
And to think they were just college-age kids when this was recorded for record execs. Incredible, raw, epic talent! Carry me back... OMG! Cheers to our incredible generation!!! 😍😍😍
Incredible generation!!!.
First concert I ever went to when they came out with their live album at the Filmore east.
They're from my hometown of Flint, MI. Named after Grand "Trunk" Railroad that runs through town here.
Remember the bridge?
@@tommy2facetv Fenton Rd? Yes it's still there
We did it all the time back then when we listen to good music........getting even higher with the music. Those were the days man.
These guys ALWAYS left it all on the stage, but this particular performance is the most passionate, energetic one I've ever seen them do. Glad you got this video, because it's GFRR at their very peak. Mark Farner is my favorite front man of all time. Back in the day EVERYONE wanted tickets to their concerts.
It needs to be said that Don Brewer on the drums is a complete psychopath and I love it. He’s got some insane solos on UA-cam
You hit the mother of all music videos. Thanks!
Glad to see you doing this one, Van. It's a classic. I think you would love "Shinin' On" by them. It's got a great groove and quite a different sound. Still funky, but a bit smoother.
GREAT JOB, Reacting to my favorite rock band of all time [didn't say the best]. My first concert 3 weeks before my 13th birthday, smoked my first one that night on the general admission standing room only floor of the Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport, LA. Can you believe they are not in the Rock HOF?
I had the cassette tape of We Are A American Band when I was at Tiger Land in Fort Polk Louisiana. The Drill Sergeant did not like it and he gave me KP for playing it!
In 69 or 1970 they sold Shea Stadium out in 4 hours. Great live band!!
He's both lead and singer thanks for showing this I'm so old and have seen so much I forgot how good they were
Saw this band in the mid 70’s and several times over the decades. Still listen to them today and usually during my workouts.
Grand Funk Railroad, the American Band that has HUGE BALLS!
I like that you give something a chance today music can’t come close to the music greatness now he helps people in jail he say he giving back to America and god
Just an incredible live performance.
Hi Guys, What I have always Liked about GFRR, is that if you'll notice they are only a 3 piece Band, when most are 4 piece or larger And for a 3 piece band to sound as awesome as GFRR can, it just amazes me. They also play an enormous amount and variety of music, I think they are awesome. Keep Smiling...
I appreciate your musicality. You get it and you know how to express and explain what’s going on in a song. Great job.
7:32 The look on bass guy's face, its like the groove is so strong,it overwhelmed him for a moment
I love Grand Funk and the radio rarely plays them
Can't wait for you to do more Grand Funk
My brother had the 8 track tape of this album back in 1972 and would play it over and over again. Closer to Home was the epic song from Grand Funk Railroad that I remember the most.
Thanks Van
My favorite group...After Vietnam - 67_70, I was introduced to Grand Funk, and being a musician, I just had to jam on their songs ! "Inside Lookin Out" was one of their best, and I had that solo down pat....
GFR is where I wet my feet at age of 8 followed by Pink Floyd. Been a rocker since!!❤️😎✌️
now that is some good ol' heavy rock and roll.
Love the reaction LFR FAMILY! This song and performance is a banger. 🤘🏼
I love this song. I have seen it reacted to many times. But you gave a great analysis of the talent.
