Possibly the greatest rock and roll performance of all time.
Pretty close. I would say Santana at Woodstock playing "Soul Sacrifice" is #1, and this performance is #2 and #3 is Vanilla Fudge on Ed Sullivan playing "Keep Me Hangin' On". #4 is The Sensational Alex Harvey Band play Give My Compliments To The Chef on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Just my opinion.

I think you may be right !
Completely agree...and from a 3 piece band. Unbelievable really!!
That’s the way we rolled ….. signed, your Grandparents
That's us!! Me and my hubby! LMAO!!
@@susanfigueroa872 But we damn sure have some memories and stories to tell ….. lol
🤣
AMEN! we all more alike than different...
Amen Ron.
One of the best jams to ever be caught on tape. We are so lucky to have this performance forever.
Mark lives just down the road from me. He is just a genuinely kind down to earth family man. As awsome a man as he is talented. He just booked a show at our local casino, it sold out in under thirty minutes! I came in from working in the garage and the wife said Mark's doing a show at the casino. Made a beeline for my phone to call for tickets. She says I heard the ad before she could come and tell me it was sold out. Thought about stopping in to see him and schmoozing some tickets. Hope he might book a second show.
He has ten yrs on me but he still jams it like he did in this video. Just fricking awsome.
Lucky... I am genuinely jealous for the first time.
It is astounding that a three-man band could produce such a spectacular masterpiece. Definitely their best work among many other great songs throughout the 70s.
@Rob Blues They did. They were one the biggest bands in the world . Selling out stadiums. You must be young
This band did great stadium rock and then turned around and produced some great radio rock. Never even been nominated fro the Rock Hall of Fame. Critics hated them, but the fans loved them. I've told everyone that I would never go to the Rock and roll Hall of Fame until those idiots put these guys in!!!
...and they were ALL in their early to mid 20's.
This is one of the greatest rock performances of all time!
I been waiting for this one. This is what happens when you get 3 extremely talented musicians in sync Its magic I love this song Keep Rockin
Me too ✌
Made my day ♥️ Rock On, young dude 😁
DAMN, actual music on actual instruments. Played and played and played harder. Hell yes! Awwww, how concerts were, I miss them so freaking much.
What a trio !
Yes!!!! This is an absolute Epic performance by GFR. I've seen it so many times and never get tired of it. You don't see talent like this anymore. 😘✌
Bro, they laid everything out in that performance
I'm of that generation. We had talent everywhere. Real instruments, real musicians and no sound boxes. Yeah, we just that cool, I'm 65 and still ROCKN OLD SCHOOL********
65 yrs old and have been to soooo many concerts. This song and this group is the ONLY CONCERT WHERE I WOKE UP THE NEXT MORNING TO BLACK AND BLUE HANDS FROM CLAPPING SO MUCH!!
GFR was a very underrated band. I’ve been a fan since they first came out. I’ve got every album and saw them in concert. It put the biggest smile on my face.✌️
Haven't heard this in 50 years, saw them in Houston Colosseum 1970 after that harmonica playing he slung it in the crowd and it nearly knocks some girl out. Those were the days.
Another song by GFR to look at is "Locomotion"
They are arguably the best R&R trio in history for a few reasons .
1) They are all great rock musicians.
2)They are all great singers.
3) they are all on the same page musically
4) Their sound is incredibly dynamic and full for just a trio which in no easy feat .
Unfortunately, in spite of all that they only had one style of music. If you only heard a couple of their songs, you basically heard them all and they gradually lost favor with the pubic .
He bought guitar on 4 payments of $50. The tape is covering holes where he took some pickups out. Gotta love the masking tape lol
If we were at that show we would be like WOW!!!!!!!! Awesome reaction!
I remember my mother and aunt listening to them as a child growing up. God, I miss those times.
dude! first time I've like your vid before I've watched!
That boys and girls was ROCK-n-Roll!
60's, 70's and 80's. Three decades of musical magic that, by the looks of it, will never happen again. What a great time to be alive and young.
Thanks HazeBruz. Watching you enjoy GFR was a real treat.
man, back then was no internet and cell phones, all the music magazine an newspaper folks talked trash about Grand Funk, but the folks buyin the records and going to concerts did not care...oh yeah, they got some funk
That's why they're called grand funk And you just got railroaded
By 1971, Grand Funk equaled the Beatles' Shea Stadium attendance record, but sold out the venue in just 72 hours whereas the Beatles concert took a few weeks to sell out.[6] HB you da Man!
Do I'M YOUR CAPTAIN/CLOSER TO HOME!
Do TIME MACHINE!
Do WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND!
Do SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL!
Do MEAN MISTREATER!
Do SHININ' ON!
Do BAD TIME!
They have a lot of good songs like Tine Machine, I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home, Some Kind Of Wonderful, We're An American Band, Heartbreaker, Bad Time, Mean Mistreater, or my favorite Footstompin' Music. Love your vids.
They are all from their commercial period !
@@gillesmorin9439 that doesn't make them any less good songs though. All The Girls In The World Beware is from that period and is jammin' song.
@@rickybutler2826 I was talking for my own taste !
The red album was there best and the most heavy !
Cinnamon 1970 in Atlanta Georgia as a teenager best live band I've ever seen they kill it on stage. Now ask yourself why are they not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame they should be.
That funk is truly grand
Definitely in the top three of all time greatest rock songs.
Party time! Great band. Mark was 21 here?
He was 21 if they did this before September......20 if before.
I feel so lucky to have seen them when they were still a three piece power band in 1971. In 1972 when I saw them again they had added keyboardist Craig Frost.
One of my favorite bands ever!!! Especially the early stuff!!!!!
Not a big fan of GFR when they first came out . But to see them perform live .... OMG , these guys gave it their all , and then some .
People just don't understand how great these guys were....this video was filmed over 50 years ago. Let that sink in....they were GFR GREAT!
Woke up from a nap put this song by chance I was born in 63’ my God. Words cannot express. Your reaction was spot on, damn right I subscribed. To the five thumbs down take your fucking finger off the mute button. Or go back to sleep,
Love and Respect G
From a California Man
That drum fill @ the 7:59 mark is sick
I might have to agree with you. That was amazing.
Saw them in Hyde Park London when I was 12yrs. Changed my Life forever. I guess it's why my Kids and my Grandchildren don't understand me....
DUDE RUSH IS NOT EVEN IN THE ROOM
Over their career, Grand Funk has had 19 charted singles, 8 Top 40 hits and two Number One singles (We're An American Band and Locomotion, both selling more than one million each). The group has now accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide.
They're from my great lake state of Michigan, Flint Michigan to be exact. They have many great hits
Saw them in 73 awesome show!

Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother
never heard this song cool
Don't forget to breathe while you're watching this
Now you see why those of us that were getting down in the 70's think the bands and music 🎶 is beyond any.
The song is very loosely based on a prison work chant from the 20s or 30s probably. First modern recording of it was by The Animals in 1966. You might like this as a point of reference, though I do really like Grand Funk's high energy interpretation too! ua-cam.com/video/H8M1MpkozJQ/v-deo.html
Think on it Brother...
This is 3 white boys, in 1969! Love how the Brother just strokes the bass, during the guitar solo!
And this was 'before,' the 'Funk, age,' of the 70s!
ZZ Top, another 3 man band. 3 Dog Night. Rush too!
"Where was you, back in 69, smoke 'n dope and drink 'n wine, just an outlaw!"
I won't need coffee now. Wow, that will wake you up 🕊❤
The best live performances Ever !!!!!!
Michigan Boys laying it down
Unbelievable Flint Michigan
More GFR"I'm your captain/closer to home","we're an American band","paranoid","heartbreaker","black licorice","TNUC" ,"some kind of wonderful" ☮️
A Plus all the way
Love you brother! You're gun, but you also know what you're talking about!
Love the rush reference
you have got to do Santana Live at Woodstock soul sacrifice!
Lead singer mark farner is part American Indian
Welcome to the Unappreciated world of Grand Funk Railroad. BTW...NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
They're actually still on tour but the original singer Mark farner still tours as a solo act

It is unbelievable this bad is not in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. This injustice needs to be rectified.
fuck yes!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a freakin' joke.
Why would you care what the R+R HOF says? They put Madonna in years ago! They're a joke!
Time to blow up the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame......and start over!👊🏻
@@roberthuber3518
I second that motion!
Sometimes being old has its benefits. I grew up on all this cool shit
Going on 60 in August, yeah some good rockin back then. 😎✌🏽
The one and only GFR... so many bangers to choose from, try "I'm Your Captain" or "Black Licorice" or "Were An American Band" or "Shinon On"
the lead singer Mark Farner was only 20 or 21 when they did this song.......he was born in September 1948, the drummer Don Brewer was also 20 or 21, also born in September 1948.......the bassist Mel Schacher was 17 or 18, born in 1951 ......amazing !!
Funny cuz Mel looks older than the both of them 😁
2023 listn since 1979
I was born in ‘51, I was 17 when Grand Funk hit the scene, changed music forever!!!!
Well, informed, I'm impressed. You gotta be a Hometown girl. If you haven't you must read the book , From Grand Funk to Grace..... By Mark Farner
@@bobsimilar3304 i will....i love him !!!....thanks for the suggestion.
1968 and they were barely out of their teens. In fact the bassist was 18 here. They sold out stadiums- and are still snubbed by the RRHOF.
They were inducted in 2020 or 2021

@@laruewatson6881 They were inducted into The Michigan Hall Of Fame! The RRHOF went the band's like GFR and others out because every year they will make more news for them with the people they don't let in.
Love GFR...
Dude is.just ROCKIN that Bass, GEEZE
you cooking with gas now! lmao
One of my favorite Simpsons moments:
HOMER - "Whaaaat? You kids don't know Grand Funk Railroad?
The shirtless guitar of Mark Farner?
The competent drumming of Don Brewer?
The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher?"
Saw them in 1971, my freshman year in college. They kicked ass! I didn't know then that they weren't much older than me. Not in the rock and roll hall of fame but Madonna is............WTF!
It's political. I think the public should be involved in voting .
@@kierstenridgway4634 For sure 😡
Yeh, go figure!
That performance is hard to top.
This was the first band I ever saw live in concert. I was 14 and a freshman in high school. I couldn't believe that only three guys were making all the music I was hearing. This particular recording is not from a concert but a show given for radio executives and A & R people. There were only about 3 dozen people in attendance which is why you don't see the audience.
Seriously, this is one of the best jams of all times, And one of the best live videos of a jam of all times, mark farner ( Lead vocalist, lead guitar, lead song writer and the guy on the harmonica ) is one of those fucking assholes that sucked up all the talent for himself so knowone else could have any.
I only knew the GFR they played on my local classic rock station growing up; they didn't play this and it's tight as hell! I've got 5 different bands it's reminding me of at once but it's its own thing! The groove in the middle makes me think of "Hush" by Deep Purple which you GOTTA crank someday bruv 🤘
P.S. Don Brewer, is kicking ass on the drums
Vary vary under rated drumer
Agreed but a douchebag for screwing Farner
I Own Every Grand Funk Railroad Album & Cd's
Seen Them In Concert 4 Times
What A Great Band To Be Jammin To At The Age Of 9 Years Young With Head Phones
But Yet Not Even A Mention At The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame , So Sad
5 / 12 / 21
They began as a garage band in Flint, MI. Later Mark could only find one guitar he could buy on credit and that's what he played here. It was hollow so he stuffed it with foam rubber and taped over the openings. Kinda crude but he made it scream despite the tape!
Hagstrom cheap Swedish guitar he was the only rock guy I ever saw play 1.
GFR are my homies...Flint, Mi.! The drummer, Donny Brewer was my cousin's classmate and his mother was a teacher of her brother at Swartz Creek HS.
Actually that’s a Messenger guitar. Twin cables, he. Stuffed and taped the sound holes because of the incredible amount of feedback at the overdriven volume levels he played. Got it for $200 on credit. He tells the story frequently
People also forget to mention for about $200 it also had a built-in "Hendrix" style fuzz tone
The greatest live jam in Rock History.
This is what I grew up on. Listening to this kind of incredible music daily! It was definitely the best time to be a teen. I am soooo thankful to have been able to enjoy it when it was first released and played over and over. Gotta admit this generation had the best music!
No autotune, no edit, no session overdubs, no remix baby. Just pure, full throttle FUNK, GFR style. Can you believe how lucky we were to have bands like this to follow?
This is an AMAZING performance from Grand Funk! Smokin'!♥️🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
A Blue Chip performance if there ever was one - Masterful.
This was my jam when I was in junior high. All the great music coming out at that time just boggles the mind.
Dudes put the groove in groovy!💜💜💜🎵🎵🎵
Grand Funk - Some Kind of Wonderful, Bad Time and I Want Freedom.
The funkiest 3 piece band ever. 🔥🔥🔥.
Can't dismiss ZZ Top.
Yo HazeBruv! I been waiting for you to react to this one! Your reaction brought a smile to my face from ear to ear... ✌😁
Check out their song some kind of wonderful.
Just think, that's in 1969!!💕 love your reactions, my very favorite.
Grand Funk added Craig Frost on keyboards in 1972 which l think really enhanced their sound. They became more competent as musicians as they got older. Lots of great songs to react to.
*The Guitar Player Mark Farner still performs today!* ....Many Hits Songs!
