I would have to agree. I was talking about that to a friend the other day, who when she sing this song, she does Dollys. We both like Dollys better. People like Whitney’s version because of the powerhouse voice. But for me, it’s not always about that. The simplicity of Dolly’s original allows you to focus on what the song says. And as a singer and songwriter, I’m more of a lyric guy.

Dolly wrote this song as a farewell to Porter Wagoner, who gave her her big break as a regular performer on his TV show. When she decided to leave the show, Porter was angry, as he enjoyed being in control of her. He didn't realize that no one controls Dolly but Dolly! He became jealous of her success and they were estranged for many years. She always respected him and was grateful for what he had done for her, but he never got over feeling betrayed. Toward the end of his life they reconciled.

To show how big her heart is: When Wagoner fell on hard times and had to sell his catalog of songs, she bought it. Then she gifted it back to him, even though he, at one time, tried to sue her for the rights to songs she wrote while on his show (a suit he lost).

THANK YOU for saying this already! I just couldn't wait to jump into the comments to add this, and I'm glad you did already. I love, love, love how Dolly sings this, but more than that, I feel it is an authentic message from one person to another. I do love how Whitney found the gospel undertones evident in the song-don't get me wrong. But I never felt Whitney was singing to any one person. It's as if the producer said, "You're Whitney, now do your thing and let loose; it'll be a huge hit!" And yes, Whitney delivers on that aesthetic. But Dolly always meant this to be an intimate message from one person to another. One REAL person, Dolly, to another real person, Porter. That's what breaks your heart about this song.

Porter Wagoner gave Dolly her 1st big break, as the “Girl Singer” on his popular show. She intended to stay 5 years. After 7, they weren’t getting along & she wanted to leave, but he wouldn’t let her out of her contract. She wrote this song to explain her feelings to him. She said he cried when he heard it & agreed to let her go, if he could produce it, which he did & she left. 5 years later, he hit her with a $3 million breach of contract suit. It settled out of court, but the friendship was broken & Porter continued to say unkind things. Later, Porter hit hard(er) times & had to sell his music catalog. Dolly quietly bought it. Sometime after, he wanted to use 1 of the songs, found out she owned it & had “his people call her people.” Instead of just letting him use the 1 song, Dolly gifted his whole catalog back to him. They made up & stayed friends till his 2007 death. Dolly is said to have visited often in his final days & sing at his bedside.

The bridge between Dolly's recording and Whitney Houston's is Linda Ronstadts 1975 cover from her album Prisoner In Disguise. As told by David Foster, Whitney heard Dollys song and wasn't interested in doing it, she didn't know what to do with this country song. They were also going to use the song, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, which Whitney didn't want also.. David went into Long Beach to get a copy of Dollys recording. The record store only had Linda Ronstadt's album with the song on it. David said as soon as he heard Linda's recording he knew what they could do with the song. When Dolly found out that David/Whitney were using Linda's recording as the template for theirs, she called David on the phone to give him the final verse, which Linda did not use in her recording. Dolly felt it was important to the song. David said this was right before they were ready to record the song, so he had to add another 45 seconds to the arrangement.

Dolly is absolutely the Queen of Country. She embodies everything that country music is about; her kindness and generosity, her sincerity and humor, her talent being among the greatest of all times.
But there were several women that came before her and paved the way. Loretta Lynn and Patsy cline were on the charts more than a decade before Dolly and deserve that recognition. If you haven't yet, you need to react to "Crazy" by Patsy and a couple of Loretta's number 1 hits... there are 16 to choose from! I'm a Honky Tonk Girl was her first, but "Don't Come Home Drinkin" was pivotal for her career. "Coal Miner's Daughter" was her biggest hit, but also near the end of her career. Dolly is a creative artist and songwriter first and foremost above everything else. Great minds love to have ideas and their creations inspire through interpretation as a way to gain knowledge by carrying a beautiful ideal of discovery by contorting it and making it better. What this means is Whitney Houston was able to share Dolly's creation with the masses just as well as she was or even more so. Why would that insult her or not be her goal in the first place or make her judge a wonderful diva singer like Whitney Houston. And I'm sure Whitney was honored to sing this song as a music fan because she most certainly would have known who Dolly Parton was from a little girl just like I do.

When Dolly sings this song it sounds like she's singing it to you! When Whitney's Houston did her version it, it sounded like she was singing to the whole world! Both are excellent! Dolly wrote this song and Jolene on the same day! One of Dolly Parton's thing she saids, is it takes a lot of money to look this cheap! Lol if you really want to get to know who Dolly really is. Always do a live version where she tells stories about the song. Before she sings the songs! Y'all stay safe!

Dolly said she's not sure if I Will Always Love You & Jolene were written the same day, just that they were next to each other on the same tape, so they were written very close together & that it was Possible they could have been written the same day.

My favorite quote from Dolly of all time is, "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap." She's such a funny, humble person.

Linda Ronstadt also does an amazing version of this song. Linda and Dolly are the best of friends, and Dolly gave Linda her blessing when Linda aske if she could record it. They, along with Emmylou Harris released two albums in the 80"s of beautiful songs with amazing harmonies between the three of them.

I can’t listen to this song without crying. The power of this song has everything to do with her authenticity.

The simplicity of this song is absolutely beautiful, like the lady herself.

Dolly is an extremely rare talent one that is very7 very very rarely scene and what's more she is probably the most generous celebrity on the planet.
