You and I are as some people say; “Mood Kindred.” Playing MHFU right now for another video and the experience from this game certainly helped. Seeing the building blocks of the series and having fun putting them together is something that I believe is sorely lacking in World. Hammer bros for life!
I have no idea how peole bought this game on release day, played it in its entirety and said: “…Yeah, I want more of this” But boy am I glad those steel-balled gods stuck through
What this video doesn't show is the online portion of the MH experience which made everyone want to keep playing. Back then when you where online you had rooms that allowed a total of 8 hunters, which gave people time to talk and plan out what people wanted to get. It was like old school WoW where half the fun was the friends you made along the way. Because this was the first entrance into the now long running series, there are plenty of exploits people used. The best example of this is head locking (HL) with a lance. This exploit allowed a hunter who had a lance enter the zone first (as back then the first hunter who entered the zone first had the least amount of lag) and start attacking the monsters head. Once the monster stumbled the lancer would position themselves in front of the head and would start a two thrust combo that would continuously keep the monster in the stumble animation. That allowed the other 3 hunters to attack the monster freely.
@@H4m54 damn I totally forgot about headlocking. I definitely played to hangout with other hunters, I remember there was a little culture of saying hey everytime someone entered the guild hall, nowadays no one really interacts like that and I've alwayswished Capcom tried to cultivate that community again somehow. I remember also having to figure out roles for Lao shan lung battles, a hammer user for the feet, Lances on the head or greatswords
I really have huge respect to anyone who've endured to play the earliest monster hunter titles bc playing that game with those hitboxes are so annoying lmao
They are exceedingly annoying, but the thing about them is that learning when exactly to dodge makes half of their attacks do nothing. On top of that, lance and greatsword are pretty OP!
To be fair, this was the closest we got to real-life difficulty if the Monster Hunter world was real. Nevertheless, it’s still hilarious that a literal gladiator sword bounced off a f*cking wasp.
Indeed! The difficulty has a sense of realism to it and felt grounded. In modern MH we feel that lore-based “descendants of super humans” bit but with MH1 we felt like peak, normal humans. Of course, the weapons and monsters are still pretty fantastical.

It's cool to see someone make Hammer look like a viable weapon in this game, since it has no knockout ability. Which has mostly been seen as the Hammer's greatest strength.
Hammer Bro for life. Even without the knockout ability, I made the raw damage work! In my opinion, the Hammer is strong enough without the knockout ability given its sheer damage output, but it became truly viable around the Tri days when head hit boxes became easier to hit.
Capcom basically makes the game way too easy now for all newplayers or what I'd rather refer to as Casuls.. Back during my days, that Hammer is actually a Godsent since its full charging strike goes through deflection and saves us a lot of time in fights against Khezu, Basarios, Rathalos (during early gameplays when our equipments are literally still shits from top to bottom including weapon). I'm honestly baffled by how easy Monster Hunter is these days where you can ride stuffs, mount enemy, grab onto them, run & roll while carrying eggs without breaking it, fast gathering mats (unlike in the past), and much more.
I was hardwalled by Rathalos for years. I got the first Monster Hunter at age 9. I tried everything but couldn't. Until I got the Ogre Tusk Bonelance. I still remember getting my first tail cut ever. I still remember Rathalos limping away through Area 9, the single worst area to hunt in, and one last stab into its leg when it finally went down. I had spent a day getting all the materials for that hunt. LG Barrel Bomb+, Flashes, Mega Potions. It's been 19 years and I still remember it.
Ah, man. We all had that hard wall moment in a classic MH game. I remember with my first game (Tri) the bloody Royal Ludroth of all monsters was my hard wall. Wasn’t until I finally learned elemental weaknesses with a qurupeco hammer that I took him down. Challenge, and the catharsis of overcoming such obstacles fuels us for the future, and ensures that our passion for that thrill continues to push us forward in these challenges to experience such a feeling again.
@@TemplarBlonic There's just something so deeply satisfying about the prep that goes into it that you don't get in later games. They're still great, I have thousands of hours in MHFU, MH3U, and MH4U, but it hit different in MH1.
@@SoyElDoug Agreed. Every single piece of a puzzle in the fights ahead require meticulous gathering and planning. Seeing your own work succeed- with no hand outs or help, is exceedingly satisfying. I find that Tri did that before you unlock the farm, and even then you need to spend a lot of time upgrading it before it becomes actually efficient. Everything needing to be gathered, stored and combined- your own work and efforts paying off in the end. MH1 had this exact effect. Even if it /shows its age, it is still a pretty satisfying game.
Nostalgic. Let's see what I remember... The hero of Kokoto killed a monoblos with his sword and shield. The dual swords are hidden and the only longsword swings like a greatsword. Powderstone 😂

Literally this. I unironically had no joke to put for Bullfangos because of how horrifically awful they are. Thankfully they weren’t nearly as common as the dreaded Velociprey and stayed dead, compared to the Velociprey.

Remember being a small child and swinging a great blade into a Yian Kut Koo for 20 minutes straight and wondering if the game was broken. That feeling when we killed it the first time and got the massive loot haul was just fantastic. Then when we finally discovered how to climb vines, it was a game changer.
The first bits of confusion and despair when fighting your first monster being imploded into a sense of confidence and tenacity when you see the monster flinch and start going down is a rush like no other!
When your shitty beginner blade bounces all over Kut-Ku: "What the shit?!" After reading some online FAQs: "Oh, the monsters have weak and hard points? Interesting!"
Seeing the first game and how the evolution of the other games got better. This is amazing seeing how this franchise got so badass over the years. Never played the first Monster Hunter but it seems like it would be a pain to play lol. Kinda funny how Proof of a Hero was actually a main opening for Monster Hunter but became the Hunters boss music in the other games. Capcom loves their music man.
Capcom has always been fantastic at music, even in their really rough experimental projects like MH1. You can see the baseline of the series even in the first game, but it’s definitely a pain get to through! Feels like playing through history, which is a nice feeling.
I love every single moment of my childhood playing this game, also that extreme fear when I got to faced my first Velociprey ever right after its cutscene and Yian Kut-ku; not to mention Gypceros which glows in the dark Swamp Zone is pure horror. The only quest that I thoroughly hate with all my heart back then was carrying Powderstone from top Volcanic Zone, carrying Herbivore egg from Desert Zone across Genprey + Cephalos.. Oh I forgot to mention that Khezu fight without sound that bounces all my melee attack despite having a blob jelly-like body.. Overall, I'd still play it again on my PS2 if I get to go back in time lol.

Excellent video, only emboldens me to try out MH1 one day. I’d ask for god to have mercy on my soul to partake in such a quest, but even those lands do not fall under his domain.
I'm only a minute and a half in, so I'm probably going to sound stupid if this is covered later in the video, but in MH1, the only insects that indicate an insect gathering point are fireflies. Also, if you're playing on an emulator, I HIGHLY recommend playing with a controller that has back bumpers, that way you can bind the left and right D-Pad buttons to the bumpers. If you have a PS4 controller, Sony actually sells a relatively affordable attachment that plugs into the Ext. port and adds reassignable back bumpers. I went from getting bodied by Yian Kut-Ku to soloing Rathalos in a matter of days with the bumpers.
I remember getting carted so hard by a Bulfango in a mushroom quest and being stressed in an egg quest later on only to face more fear inducing stuff. People who say Dark Souls is hard have never played old MH games. MH was there before even Demon Souls was a thing. It's sad to see MH getting less credit. Especially the old OG Mh games
Wire bugs are absolutely insane! Just kind of odd how they render the Barioth and Tigrex completely… moot. Not that I was a fan of either, but now they’re both exceedingly easy to take care of.

You see a Crusader fellow in the English parts of Hunsterverse’s community, it might just be me!
Played this to the death, Rathalos flying 24/7 (he brings his wife too late in the game), Gypceros crap fest, Monoblos fight full of genpreys, Plesioth madness, BULLFANGOS, gathering rust stones, and those bullsh*t egg quests. The best and most vivid memory of any monster hunter I played was getting stunlocked to oblivion by Rathians' instant running attack while she pinned my helpless 14 y.o. ass against a wall. She took her time too.. :') I really hope mainstream gaming goes back to more challenging gameplay instead of graphics again.
Oh how I hated that so much. It was an issue until World, too! Every game before World had issues with arenas and Rathian being able to spam that stupid charge! I do hope that we have more “read, not react” mechanics in Monster Hunter like we used to. There are still reads but not nearly as much of the hunt is reliant on it as it was before World.
Knight Blonic ideally, it should work as a spectrum. Attacks that need to be read shouldn’t function as they do in early games, with literal 0 frames of windup, but rather with very quick animations that happen under specific conditions (I.e. Garuga doesn’t attack for X seconds, it takes a step back and charges)
You honor me with your generous, honeyed words! I’ve only been getting better, too! My most recent video exemplifies this! Stick around and let me know what you wanna see! I’ll test myself to try and make ya’ actually excited to see it!
Man I still remember it like it was yesterday. Started the first quest and hitting the square button, hoping for a giant swing of that greatsword I equipped. Instead, I chugged down a potion followed by that iconic flexing animation.
God, playing any other monster hunter game before world (hell maybe even mh4u) is like reverting back to a cave man fighting things with wooden spears. Back in my day, we used paintballs and we LIKED IT. Glad im subbed
Hah! This is true, but back then it was like some kind of masochistic pleasure that came when you finally completed an upgrade and you felt the power of your upgrade on the challenges ahead. Tri probably hit the perfect sweet spot. MH4U was amazing and World did something alright with its variation depending on the online, but nothing will ever be as satisfying as Tri/3U IMO. And I’m honored! Hope you stick around!
Completely forgot that the older ones didnt indicate where you could gather, took 10year old me about two weeks to figure out how to gather in fredome unite lmao
Hah! Yeah, it was definitely something to get used to. Thankfully, some of the gathering areas got a lot more obvious and recognizable later on... and in Tri they were naturally able to be seen and pop out to the player but not like complete eye sores, like, say, World, where it just screams "GATHERING POINT."
This video got me to play the Japanese version of MH1. I've not been able to get online as of yet but it's been surprisingly fun! Considering I got no QoL, can't even sort my box, I've been really enjoying the gameplay loop of gathering and selling, and each attempt at a nonster feels like a true challenge considering a good amount of them can combo you to death if you aren't careful. Inching and scratching for every bit of progress makes every victory feel truly earned. And this is my 2nd true MH I've been wanting to play besides 3U. I may be a masochist though lol
I miss small monsters being a threat but not nearly as obnoxious as they are in MH1. Tri/3U did it right with the Jaggi, Baggi, Uroktor, etc. all being threats that you should take out and served as actual obstacles instead of, say, the Jagras from World who do no damage and never attack. However, the Leshen fight with those Jagras sucked. That was above even MH1 levels of aggravating.
@@TemplarBlonic Yeah, I think 3rd gen small monsters had just the right amount of aggression to feel like a threat without being too overwhelming. As for the Jagras in the Leshen fight, I actually liked that mechanic. I think it would be good if it's only available on specific conditions, like if it's a monster that hunts with a pack, or it's Gore Magala affecting them through the frenzy virus.
Here's a thought of mine while playing through MH1. The issue with the critters in modern MH is not just their lack of aggression. They also die way too easily. The MH1 Ioprey, for example. They are already ridiculously aggressive, but also, their hp is high enough that they don't die after a few hits. Making each and every unit a legitimate threat. There's no killing them all in one fell swoop, and even if you do kill them, more will come. I think these 3 factors of aggression, bulk, and infinite reinforcements make them an even bigger threat than the main monster sometimes. Now, do they need to be this tanky in modern games? Maybe not. But I hope in MH6, they're not complete pushovers that you kill without even realizing it. At least make the player feel their presence first. They came close with the Girros. I just wish they were a bit tankier. Edit: Also, I think their hitbox is larger? I have trouble dodging through these guys whenever they get me into a corner. So, 4 factors, if I'm right about this one.
@@kurosan0079 I agree. As a Hammer user especially, I completely forget the existence of smaller monsters in modern MH. They are such non-issues that you forget they're there, unlike MH3 and the like where you had to manage their numbers every couple of minutes with the main pack leader to make sure you don't get swarmed. It was a nice balance. Hopefully we get fresher small monster tactics with MH6!
You forgot the sushifish gather mission, took me like 30 minutes for me to start googling where I can find the f'n fish, which is at area 11 for anyone wondering.
This video, good lord I know my start for PSP on MH1 was kind of bad too, then I moved to MH2 and started getting the hang of it, but this is hilarious so much that I just *had* to subscribe! Also, same thing happened with proven point: You didn't give up and came back through the end.
You honor me! Thank you so much! The Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Experience should be coming between now and November so you can get more laughs! Never give up! Anything is doable with sheer willpower and the distinct lack of knowing your limits! Hah!
I started playing this game in early 2005 because my friend advised me to pick this game in local game store in my city (because the cover was very cool he said). And of course i enjoy every detail from this game including the 'madness difficulty' when the hitbox was sooo crazy back then. And finished all of quests (except online quests) in middle of 2010. I need 5 years to become a good Monster Hunter. 😁
MH1 had so few quests compared to, say, MHFU and MH3U but the amount of experience you garner and the difficulty more than matches it. Well done, my dude!
You named the game perfectly. It’s like thrusting your body through a hall of serrated hooks just to grab an ornament that isn’t made anymore for bragging rights!
Hah! Yeah, MH1 was ludicrous! Soulsborne is hard but MH1 is entirely based around obtaining everything through your own merit and time. Even healing items!
@@TemplarBlonic too true. In gen 1 every single item mattered. Especially flash and sonic bombs. Now I just wish they’d cut back on experimentation and try and perfect what they learned from Tri(online and underwater combat) 4U(terrain combat), Generations(special abilities), World(general QoL and world building) and Rise(faster transportation and snappier combat akin to Old World).
it makes me so happy to see people who can enjoy this game. i think the PS2 games, when they finally click, give way to a special, unique experience. while the online mode holds a great portion of the content which is otherwise inaccessible - which i am happy to have access to, thanks to the dedication of so many other fans - the game can still be enjoyable without it.
Old MH has that feeling incarnate where it takes a while but when it FINALLY clicks you feel such a dopamine hit after every success. Amazing feeling! I look forward to reliving my entry into the series with 3U. After MHFU that’s the goal!
The thing about that, though, is that although it is obnoxious and ends up in any mistake in heal timing being punished, you get instantly healed for the healing portion unlike in new games where it is progressive healing.

You and I are as some people say; “Mood Kindred.” Playing MHFU right now for another video and the experience from this game certainly helped. Seeing the building blocks of the series and having fun putting them together is something that I believe is sorely lacking in World.

I have no idea how peole bought this game on release day, played it in its entirety and said: “…Yeah, I want more of this”
But boy am I glad those steel-balled gods stuck through
It wasn't release day I got it, but your welcome.
Played it at age 12 and defeated fatalis with my clan. Back when you could only fight fatalis with a gun bc he'd one hitko you
back in our day we were driven by sheer ketamine to kill this fellas
It's not the most infuriating thing, it's the attacking with right analog stick and the super aggressive small monsters 💀
Skill isn't enough, the entire game is just plain bullshit, especially those damned egg delivery quests
i still see the plesioth hip check me in my dreams
yeah and the combat is weird. left stick to move. right stick is the melee. each direction a different attack.

In my opinion, the Hammer is strong enough without the knockout ability given its sheer damage output, but it became truly viable around the Tri days when head hit boxes became easier to hit.
sure but triple pound is still one of the strongest moves
gs didnt have any charging
@@farts77 triple pound and the final hit bashing the skull...pure ecstasy
@@ammagon4519 Ecstasy barely does justice to the feeling of what landing such glorious strikes feels like!

God those were good times. There was a lot of suffering but almost a decade later and I still can't stop playing the series.
Indeed, friend! It felt good experiencing this game and appreciating what we have now, on top of appreciating the older games.
Favorite part is 8:28. Reminds me why I fell in love with the series in the first place. All the trials and frustration pay off in the end.
While looking back I can see the pain the game truly is, I loved it so much when it came out. Proof of a Hero just hits so hard for nostalgia now and forever.
Indeed. Old MH was something so new and enjoyable. It has aged, but it still has its merit!
this guy literally erased all traces of Bullfangos from his experience to protect his sanity.
Literally this. I unironically had no joke to put for Bullfangos because of how horrifically awful they are. Thankfully they weren’t nearly as common as the dreaded Velociprey and stayed dead, compared to the Velociprey.
You can really tell the soul of monster hunter was already there in the very first entry, and by soul, I mean endless pain and suffering
Pain, suffering… but also the drive to keep pushing forward and become better. Not just stronger, but more efficient and capable to take on insurmountable odds!

i made it my own personal goal to kill the rathalos before delivering the egg, i even took a long time mining just to upgrade the highest tier lance(paladin lance+), farmed up the flash bombs and woo lad, nothing is more satisfying then taking sweet vengeance on an overgrown lizard, i made sure this was the first major monster kill.
Vengeance fueled by spite is a powerful thing!
When your shitty beginner blade bounces all over Kut-Ku: "What the shit?!"
After reading some online FAQs: "Oh, the monsters have weak and hard points? Interesting!"
I love how you get disrespected by the felynes that supposedly were helping you for money
Always! They get hit by the big ol’ Rathalos and BAM. They think I’m to blame!
Old Monster Hunter is when you arent the main protagonist.
Not the main protagonist, but still pushing through to conquer the day!

Dude this game challenged me like no other and I LOVED it.lost data twice and beat it twice. I've followed monster hunter since then.
Ahhh, this brings me back. You can't imagine how much my mind was blown when I first used wirebugs... Well, maybe now you can.

@@MHMega Even if there was no startup, you'd typically still get used to when monsters threw out these moves because it was based on your positioning.
Trime That doesn’t mean Garuga teleporting itself into a 0 frame charge animation is good design. It looks bad and doesn’t really make sense

I'm glad you and others got enjoyment out of my torture! Hah!
The fact that MH became what it is today considering the first game dumbfounds me.
Indeed! It laid the foundation for what the series is.
Ah yes my childhood game, Handle with Care is the best Quest ever
Handle with *pain.* Genprey fill me with wrath if I see one now!
Rocky is plenty motivational, but nothing gets me as hyped as “Proof of a Hunter.” When that started up, I knew $hit was about to get real
Indeed. Rocky part was still half-joke half-serious. Proof of a Hero is when it gets serious.
Man, small monsters back then were ruthless. I miss it, honestly.
A timeless classic.
MH1 had so few quests compared to, say, MHFU and MH3U but the amount of experience you garner and the difficulty more than matches it.

@@TemplarBlonic too true. In gen 1 every single item mattered. Especially flash and sonic bombs. @@redkoba2671 Although I don’t agree with the missing of bad hit boxes, I do miss the impact and reward of taking time to farm items to take out monsters. It felt like the fruits of my labor were productive!
@@TemplarBlonic oh yeah the hitboxes are just a nostalgic thing I love from unite, thank goodness for the proper ones in recent games tho. Yeah it felt good feeling that your effort paid out after quests and farms
That hammer strike with earthquake effect is pretty cool to look at
Nothing like the power of a hammer having an effect fitting it!
Truly one of the monster hunter of all time
But really though, its incredible how japanese companies keep the essence and legacy of the franchise after so long, I could totally tell this is a prototype of MHW, everything you're familiar with is there, and it came out 14 YEARS BEFORE. Respect
Agreed. The fact that they’ve stuck with the main skeleton is impressive.
Now I just wish they’d cut back on experimentation and try and perfect what they learned from Tri(online and underwater combat) 4U(terrain combat), Generations(special abilities), World(general QoL and world building) and Rise(faster transportation and snappier combat akin to Old World).
2:13 the kingdom hearts music, the kratos, and the funny. These are the components of a perfect clip
Hah! I tried to make sure I crafted the perfect agony of the cacophony of chaos I had to endure.
it makes me so happy to see people who can enjoy this game. i think the PS2 games, when they finally click, give way to a special, unique experience. while the online mode holds a great portion of the content which is otherwise inaccessible - which i am happy to have access to, thanks to the dedication of so many other fans - the game can still be enjoyable without it.
Old MH has that feeling incarnate where it takes a while but when it FINALLY clicks you feel such a dopamine hit after every success. Amazing feeling!
I look forward to reliving my entry into the series with 3U. After MHFU that’s the goal!
The worst part is, you flex everytime you need to heal
The thing about that, though, is that although it is obnoxious and ends up in any mistake in heal timing being punished, you get instantly healed for the healing portion unlike in new games where it is progressive healing.
Ah yes, the original elden ring on the ps2, but with marsh mellows as weapons, the game.
All I gotta say is right stick hunting feels great I will not stand for this slander... just don't worry about the camera
As a old Monster Hunter PS2 player, i can confirm all of this suffering. Therefore why the later games are barely painful.
It’s like the best form of having a kid: painful all at once then wonderful as it gets older.
A great trip down memory lane, what was the song used during the rematch with Rathalos?
Playing a classic era MH game definitely put me in a trip down memory lane. I never played MH1 originally but now I officially have bragging rights. Hah!
ua-cam.com/video/9gBTKiVqprE/v-deo.html Here you go, friend. Royalty free "Dragon Castle" by Makai Symphony.
@@TemplarBlonic Congrats! That's another MH to place under the belt, also I'm surprised that song was available, the first time I ever heard it was in an official Dragonball Heroes commerical, didn't expect to ever hear it again out of that.
@@bobsmith8405Thanks! Maybe someday I can get the private server working and finally take down the Fatalis. Next on the list is FU, which I hear has even whackier hitboxes... After that I'll have the main series of games played, but those will receive videos as well during my next playthroughs!
Really? Surprising given how Dragonball has so many tunes under their belt.
@@TemplarBlonic @Crusader Bloonicus sez DEUS VULT! You're in for a real treat there, but hopefully, the private servers will work for Fatalis. Also as for the commercial see for yourself, it makes me wonder which other songs are available from those trailers now. Check at 51:25 onwards ua-cam.com/video/HVFuavRIZjY/v-deo.html
@@bobsmith8405 FU is the game that instilled the fame of the series way back when-- I remember that specifically. Then Tri brought a massive amount of new fans in(such as myself) due to the availability on the Wii and World made it mainstream. Looking forward to trying it out and playing it through to the point of taking on Fatalis of that game! That'll certainly be quite the video, too...
I hope that I can get the servers working or that there will be a loophole that will allow the US versions of the game to connect in due time. One can hope!
Hah! Small world with music selection. Never knew that even existed!
I played MH since the 10 years old, started with THIS.
The kutku made me leave the game 3 times, and the rathalos 10 times, but THIS is gold
Pd: Haha I was forgetting the mf unique hr quests, THE TROUBLESOME PAIR!
HAH! I have experienced your pain, friend! Kut-Ku was rough at first but this game retaught me how Monster Hunter was originally about "Read, not React" gameplay. If you got down their combos, you were set. Still challenging, but you could learn intricate holes in their hitboxes and avoid damage almost completely.
I am honored that you enjoyed this! It was a tough journey of a game but it was worth it... if nothing else but bragging rights!
@@TemplarBlonic Haha and the right control with the attacks... god.
Thanks for reminding me so many things friend
You forgot the mission to Kill Rathalos and Rathian at the same time.
Less “forgot” and more… too comatose to try.
There's your first mistake
using sword and shield
Every game until World forces you to use Sword and Shield at the beginning. The first hammer was 3000+ zenny and the beginning quests only gave 700 at max.
In other words… PAIN.
@@TemplarBlonic Nah I remember MHFU and MHPortable 3rd letting you use a different weapon in a chest.
They're still unupgraded garbage but hey, the option is still there.
@@magosexploratoradeon6409 Did that really start with FU? I remember Tri not giving you other weapons. Odd.
@@TemplarBlonic Yeah they do, I think the same is also with Freedom but I don't remember it as much because I mainly played FU.
@@magosexploratoradeon6409 yes in freedom, you had all of them too, which was really helpful because you could sell them and buy some armor
More or less how my playthrough went after picking this back up
Then you understand the struggle, good sir!
