I get lost in Warren Haynes Les Paul in this rendition...it's incredible, or as Dave said to his bandmate somewhere around the 7:25ish mark, "that's bad ass".

The BEST cover I have ever seen. " HATE WAS JUST A LEGEND , WAR WAS NEVER KNOWN " " THEY BUILT UP WITH THEIR BARE HANDS WHAT WE * STILL * CAN'T DO TODAY "
I’ve lost count to how many times I’ve listened to this song, how many chills sent through my entire body, how many times this song has touched my soul. This is first time I’ve watched this video of this song. I love how Dave zones out on Warren’s solos with a smile on his face. Real recognize real.
I met Warren Haynes after a show at the Warner theatre in DC, with my late buddy Courtney who got me into Govt mule. And everyone I can tell you Warren is the nicest dude. AND A BAD MOTHERFUCKER IN THE GUITAR.....so much love for everything he does
Been writing & home recording for a year. Then I come back to this & realise that I'm pond life. Warren's sublime choice of notes is a masterclass. The words respect & gratitude belong somewhere in this paragraph so I'll park them here.
Having walked where Montezuma reigned and climbed those pyramids back before they closed them off to the public, the temple of the sun and chichin itza in the yucatan this song has always held a special place for me. Neil young having writen this tune and Dave Mathews and the exceptional guitar of Warren Haynes makes it just that much more special, I love Dave's voice is so unique and Warren adds that gutsy touch that just puts in a special catagory to listen to. Exceptional team of musicians!
My jaw drops every time I watch and listen to this. Warren Haynes = amazing! Edit: Lets not forget to give Neil Young his ado as this is a cover by Matthews and Haynes ☺
Absolute perfect performance! I saw this many years ago at a friends house and it never has left my mind, I am a Warren Haynes fan of many years and this to me is the epitome of his live performances. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a show in Winston Salem NC in early 2000s and he was such a chill down to earth guy. i agree with earlier comment completely that this show was the end of an era in that there are no smartphones out trying to capture what should only be experienced at the moment.
This version with Warren Haynes and DM, along with the version that Grace Potter did with Joe Satriani are two of my top five songs of all time! They are both great, but different!
I love everything that Neil Young has created. I'm a huge fan of his. But as a Blues lover, I'm especially in awe of the Dave Matthews Band for incorporating Warren Haynes in this and making it... Spectacularly impassioned.
I’m going on 70 y.o. and found this video less than a week ago - it’s actually the first time I’ve ever even heard of this song, but I ❤ it! It amazes me in a way that the lyrics to many songs that were written/composed for the 1st time quite some years ago seem to have more relevance today than they did originally for multiple reasons. This is one of them imo! * UPDATE: It’s the beginning of ‘24, and since I wrote this comment, I’ve accumulated many other versions of this song. I did like Neil Young’s ‘Crazy Horse’ (IIRC) one too, but still prefer THIS w/ Dave and Warren!
One of the best renditions of this classic by Neil young, but Warren puts so much emotion and soul into this solo, together they really bring a level that touches the virwers very soul both for the historical tragedy and the loss of love for Neals lover. An epic!
This should be in a time capsule sent into space to show how bad ass of a species we are and such a magnificent creation of our lord Jesus just saying can I get a witness this is the finest of the finest
19 minutes of music I completely needed today. Peace to you all!! So grateful to have found this gem... crazy how this obscure collaboration can give the day a new meaning.

Looking for the new world

On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls, he often wandered
With the secrets of the world
And his subjects gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see
And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on
Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones
And they carried them to the flat lands
But they died along the way
And they build up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today
And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way
He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer
I can't explain with words how I feel when I listen to this performance. Especially the intro part of the second guitar solo... Unbelievable.
Superb rendition of a superb song.
It's hard to imagine that this concert was more than 20 years ago in 2003!
I could listen to this on repeat forever.....the absolute greatest
Me too. I think I will, tonight at least.
Me too!
What a masterpiece…Warren’s sound is so clean and smooth!!!
I still find myself, 20 years later, still obsessed with this version and cover of the amazing work of Neil.
These are the only guys to make a 10 minute song feel like 3
The BEST cover I have ever seen. " HATE WAS JUST A LEGEND , WAR WAS NEVER KNOWN " " THEY BUILT UP WITH THEIR BARE HANDS WHAT WE * STILL * CAN'T DO TODAY "
At the end where Dave smiles at Carter and goes 'bro, you sing too' with his expression. Melts my heart
I’ve lost count to how many times I’ve listened to this song, how many chills sent through my entire body, how many times this song has touched my soul. This is first time I’ve watched this video of this song. I love how Dave zones out on Warren’s solos with a smile on his face. Real recognize real.
One of the best Drummer’s to sit behind a Kit ! Highly underrated.
Amazing performance still to this day!
I met Warren Haynes after a show at the Warner theatre in DC, with my late buddy Courtney who got me into Govt mule. And everyone I can tell you Warren is the nicest dude. AND A BAD MOTHERFUCKER IN THE GUITAR.....so much love for everything he does
I’d pay just to hear this song live
Dave is simply an American Bad Ass. He never ceases to amaze whether its behind the drum kit or the Guitar. He is truly a genius 😊
Godlike, ascending to heaven
Yes.
Absolutely.
❤️❤️❤️.
This is my favorite DMB performance with Warren Haynes. Sends me places... happy places.
Agree
Definitely among my all time favorite songs by DMB
This was my happy place. 17 years ago sparking a J on the great lawn and listening to DMB and Warren play. What a memory.
And the space between
@@jimbeaux89 it’s originally by Neil young
Been writing & home recording for a year. Then I come back to this & realise that I'm pond life. Warren's sublime choice of notes is a masterclass. The words respect & gratitude belong somewhere in this paragraph so I'll park them here.
These guys own this song for all time, sorry Neil I love you but hey....
In the middle of this plague...this is awesome.
It would always be!
My jaw drops every time I watch and listen to this. Warren Haynes = amazing!
Edit: Lets not forget to give Neil Young his ado as this is a cover by Matthews and Haynes ☺
This should wake emmotion in your soul ...
If not . ....
Grow with it .
Blessed to hear this quality of musician
Yes
Wow! Sound of the soulful God, blessed! Orgasmic sounds of creation....deep fabric of love and ecstasy.
I love everything that Neil Young has created. I'm a huge fan of his. But as a Blues lover, I'm especially in awe of the Dave Matthews Band for incorporating Warren Haynes in this and making it... Spectacularly impassioned.
Well done I absolutely adore your deeply talented ability to paint a master piece in words!wish I could.
Agreed!😎
I keep returning to this incredibly mind-blowing performance.
One of the best songs ever played.
I love that even the band members are freaking out about how great this moment is.
One of the best renditions of this classic by Neil young, but Warren puts so much emotion and soul into this solo, together they really bring a level that touches the virwers very soul both for the historical tragedy and the loss of love for Neals lover. An epic!
At the 7:29 mark Dave's acknowledgment at how amazing and absolutely bad ass Warren is playing, makes me rewind and play it all again.. Too Cool !!!
You got me there. Simply amazing best guitar player ever
Very cool...pure talent from both of em💙🎶
O h damn I first time hearing this I'm glad I waited to find this
version so Beautiful truly!
Most amazing performance ever.....Warren Haynes is a BEAST on that guitar!
This should be in a time capsule sent into space to show how bad ass of a species we are and such a magnificent creation of our lord Jesus just saying can I get a witness this is the finest of the finest
Truly one of the Greatest things I've ever seen......Blown away !
Best song on this album in my humble opinion.
19 minutes of music I completely needed today. Peace to you all!! So grateful to have found this gem... crazy how this obscure collaboration can give the day a new meaning.
I remember when this happened, it actually was a free concert for the people. That's all the good Dave does with heart, such a decent human being.

The dvd they made from this show has Cortez the Killer and All along the Watchtower back to back. I’m sure that’s what he means, it was an epic 19 minutes
YES!!!!! IVE BEEN DOWN FOR 5 DAYS! I TRIED GRACE POTTER ABD SATRIANI WHICH IS IMMACULATE...THEN THE OG...BUT THIS ONE DID IT BESTBFORBM TODAY. POSSIBLY THE 17 YEARS OF LOVE FOR DAVE MATHEWS BAND BIASED MY OPINION. OR MORESO MAYBE COTEZ REMINDS ME 10000% of her. All in all they prolly killed close to the same amount
Warren Haynes is one of the best guitar players could listen to him anytime
Spectacular guitars. Great cover.
The greatest thing on utube
