When Mac Davis was 5 or 6 years old, Nashville songwriter couldn't understand why one of his best friends had to live in a bad part of town. He remembered that friend as he wrote "In the Ghetto," which Elvis Presley turned into a chart-topping hit in 1969. Davis wrote, "In the Ghetto" with Bart Herbison. Davis said it's kind of a convoluted story, but it's a true story. He had been trying to write a song called "The Vicious Circle" for ages. . The word "ghetto" was just becoming popular to describe the parts of urban areas where poor people were living and couldn't get out. They were stuck there, and everybody took off to the suburbs.
Davis grew up with a little kid whose father worked with his father and he was a black kid. they were friends, 5 or 6 years old. Davis remembers him being one of his best friends. But he lived in a part of town, and Davis couldn't figure out why they had to live where they lived, and he got to live where he lived. The Davis family didn't have a lot of money, but they didn't have broken bottles every six inches. It was a dirt street ghetto where he lived. That is where the song is inspired from

You guys are great... just found you guys and your channel. Elvis is the GOAT, you got it right on! And yes, for the most part he was remembering his childhood, but overall he was singing about all poverty stricken communities where children are born and then they have to grow up in the streets of where they were born - and in those days those poverty stricken neighborhoods were called the Ghetto. No racial, or nationality or creed, or religion or ? Were excluded if you were poor! You were a child of the Ghetto and Elvis was one of those children. Born in Tupelo Mississippi (dirt poor), then they relocated to Memphis Tennessee to the projects. He knew what he was singing about! He lived it! But his Mama raised him right!!!!!! He saw NO color in a man/woman! He loved everyone and he was one of the most Generous souls, which is in many peoples opinions, that had ever lived! His generosity is still felt today by the unknown/not really heard of, foundations left behind and managed by Lisa Marie. RIP Elvis, may the crown on your head shine bright and your reign go on forever!
Also, just a SideNote: Elvis did not write this song - Mac Davis wrote the song. He was a very popular singer in the day of the 70’s & early 80’s. Country artist with a couple of “Crossover” hits.

I myself am a music historian. I am an M. Jackson myself, but I also love Elvis. As Elvis could sing Live I have never seen as a music historian. its charisma is not of this planet. ws absurt. He had so much of it that you could just look at him when he wasn't singing and open-mouthed. Elvis once did a TV special after not being on stage for 8 years. At the time, he was no longer as popular, but 80 million Americans watched the TV special to see if he still had it. He blew everything away in that show, relegating every single singer in America at the time. in his black leather suit, he showed it after 8 years of not having forgotten. if.you will watch the show now 1 do you think it was recorded yesterday. he was so far ahead of his time. there was no one who came close to him singing live. I once went as a M.J fan to a concert of M.J in Rotterdam Holland. after half an hour I left and thousands with me. M.J did 70 to 80 percent of his songs mimic. i felt cheated. And later I saw that he did that at every concert. That's why Elvis is the goat unfortunately. Elvis did nothing practiced like M.J with all his dance steps. Elvis did everything on the feel and rhythm of his band. This man is from another planet. that can not be otherwise .. has opened all doors for the black singers. as Kayne West once said on tv, without elvis i would never have had this fantastic life .... unfortunately elvis is the goat and that hurts to say as dei hart M.J fan
Watch the comback special 68 en look voor Jailhouse rock er de rock and roll medley. Damn.

Mack Davis wrote this song for a friend he grew up with, he knew Elvis could deliver the emotion of this song correctly because Elvis also grew up very poor in a section of Tupelo Mississippi called Shake Rag (?sp) when his family moved to Memphis they lived in housing projects...

  • @davidharrison1523
    @davidharrison1523 5 годин тому

At Las Vegas, Elvis was contracted to do two concerts every day for 30 days without a single day’s break … same for back up singers & musicians, but ultimately Elvis had the responsibility. Plus there were rehearsals as well. He usually did either an 8pm or 10pm concert, & then a midnight or 2am concert every day …. So if he did the 8pm concert he would also do the midnight concert, & some other singer would do the 10pm & 2am concerts, but I don’t know whether they were contracted to do just a week or perhaps two weeks. Elvis did the month, because he was a superstar & every concert was Sold Out. He also toured around America, after 5 or 6 weeks break, apart from rehearsals. When he was touring, he often just did one concert in a certain area, before travelling the next day to another city to so another concert …. They would sleep on the coach, or if it was a longer trip, they would fly in one of Elvis’ planes, usually the Lisa Marie, named after his daughter … but he only got the Lisa Marie in 1976, so the year before his death. Sometimes he would have a vacation in Hawaii, his favourite place. He also did some concerts in Hawaii, & he did concerts in Canada, but not sure how many or when. He really wanted to do International concerts, but his manager wouldn’t allow him to, saying it was too much of a security risk, but that was just an excuse because the manager couldn’t travel outside of America.

First thank you for the reaction. Next LMAO. Elvis was dirt poor. OKAY, I am over it now lol. Anyway, I am thankful that you young gentlemen are experiencing new to you music.
The song also demonstrated the vicious, unfortunate cycle of life that some may find in a ghetto.
Most importantly I think Elvis was calling folks out. With all the talking heads wasting breath over the decades, no one has laid out and painted that vivid picture you speak of as Elvis has in one short song; nor has there been positive change. We have to help ourselves, our brothers and sisters that can not. This means provide education and opportunities that the mouth pieces only talk about the need for, but do nothing. Sorry about that, I get fired up just thinking about certain things.
Please check out the Righteous Brothers and the Bee Gees for good music as well. You owe it to yourselves to learn about Elvis. There are a few short videos here on UA-cam.
    Thanks again for the react.

His heart was with the plight of African Americans. She shopped in their neighborhoods, bought cars from them and you'll notice his background singers are black. He went to perform in Texas and when he arrived early to look things over, they told him that his background singers not allowed in because that are black. He told them that he would not perform. So they agreed to let the women in. He told them that they would give first class treatment to the women and that he would arrive with them in a convertible so everyone could see. He was ahead of his time in this respect

Awesome reaction, guys! So cool that you are reacting to The Beatles and Elvis. I also saw your AC/DC reaction from River Plate stadium. Sadly, what Elvis was singing about back them remains unchanged and may have even gotten worse since then. I like that you do your research as well as analyzing the lyrics to this song.
I would like to introduce you guys to a new band. They are a power trio consisting of three sisters, called The Warning. I think you will really like what they do. The song I'll leave you a link to (if you decide you want to do a first-time reaction) is the first track off of their second full-length LP. It is actually the Prologue to a four-chapter story told in a concept album. I would like to see what you think of them and this powerful performance. The song is called "Dust to Dust" from a show they gave in Mexico City in 2018.

He actually grew up in Lubbock, Texas that was considered a dirt poor area, "ghetto" wasn't a common term during that time. This song isn't about color by any means. It's about the cycle of life for folks trapped in poverty. Elvis was heavily involved in the black community and churches. His passion singing was Gospel much more than rock and roll.

It's one thing to write a song and it's quite another thing to be able to interpret a song. I've been an Elvis fan for a long time and he picked songs that he believed in. He picks songs where he loved the poetry. Remember this too, a lot of singers who claim they write their songs actually buy them from someone else pay them so much money and then claim the writing rights for themselves. They tried to do that in the beginning when Elvis first started. He told his manager once he found out about it, you will not do that, you will give the writer of the song credit. You know why Elvis did that? He did that because he was a Class Act and an honorable man. So I just wanted to set the record straight. God bless you you guys.

Carolyn Saint it wasn’t written for Elvis specifically. It was offered to Sammy Davis first. But when Elvis heard it and decided he wanted to do it.

Nothing about the song was personal You say .
It's personal about you not having a brain, but go ahead and write anyway.
