In the '60s (yeah, I'm old) there was a TV show in the US called "Secret Agent" and this was the theme song. I remember singing this along with the TV every week.
Secret Agent Man was a television series starring Patrick McGoohan from 1964-1967. The Johnny Rivers song played during the opening titles. It was a t.v. show title song. The show also played in Britain as Danger Man.
"Secret Agent Man" was a big hit for Johnny Rivers and was also the theme song for a mid-sixties TV show called "Secret Agent" (in the UK it was called "Danger Man"). The show was about a secret agent, what else. After the James Bond movie "Goldfinger" came out everything went spy crazy in this country. Suddenly there were all kinds of Spy/Secret Agent movies and TV shows. Some of the more famous TV shows were "Man Fron UNCLE", "I Spy", "Mission Impossible", "Get Smart", and "The Avengers." Then there were lots of spy themed games and toys (Anyone besides me remember the "Six finger"). It was a fun time to be a kid, although most of those toys would be banned today.
I saw this comedy group that parodied this song as "Secret ASIAN Man". But yeah, spy thrillers were HUGE back in the 60's! And "loose lips sink ships". 😉
In the 60's Secret Agent's were everywhere, on TV in the movies and in real life. 📺 TV had The Avengers 1961, Get Smart 1964,Man from Uncle and I Spy 1965,Mission Impossible 1966 the year this song came out 😅 In the movies numerous James Bond movies, agent 007. 😂 cartoons Secret Squirrel, Rocky and Bullwinkle with Boris and Natasha, and MAD Magazines Spy Vs Spy 🕵️♂️ the 60's definitely had a Spy craze 😳 Peace✌️ and Love❤️ your 70 year old forever hippie😀 Gary😊
There's one guitar player who used to hire me to do shows with him. He was so hooked on the big Johnny Rivers hit "Memphis, Tennessee" that it turned up in every show. You should check that one out, too!
"Seventh Son" is another good one by Johnny Rivers. "Secret Agent Man" was released in 1965 at the height of popularity of the spy thrillers, like the James Bond movies and some of the knock-offs seen on network TV.
This was a hit when I was really little kid. Some people thought the chorus went: Secret "Asian" Man, just from hearing the song on the transistor radio. Mountain of Love or Baby, I Need Your Lovin' are two big 1960s hits by John Rivers. His last hit was Swayin' to the Music (Slow Dancin') in 1977-78 when I was a Senior in High School. Its got to be one of the most Romantic Songs of the period. Thanks for this reaction!
This is a great Johnny Rivers song. Secret agent movies and TV shows were all the rage in the early to mid '60s. Yeah Jay, James Bond, The Man from UNCLE, I-Spy, Matt Helm movies (Dean Martin) and Harry Palmer movies (Michael Caine), Our Man Flint. and all the other ones that Mike Myers parodied in the Austin Powers movies. This song was huge. Most of us children of the '60s remember the chorus by heart and most of the verses.
One of the best TV theme songs. It hit number 3 on the Billboard charts in 1966. Johnny Rivers also did a really good version of Midnight Special, which was used as the theme song of the late-night concert show of the same name.
This was the theme song for a television series I LOVED as a kid. Patrick McGoogan was the secret agent. The same guy who played that horrible king in Braveheart as an older man. I had a crush on him as a little girl.
Oh, heck yeah! This one (if I remember correctly) was for both Bond and "Danger Man". In 2000, there was a show called "Secret Agent Man", but I never saw it. Always loved that guitar riff!
Johnny Rivers is mostly forgotten, but very relevant in the '60-80s era. Was well known and respected, and contributed much in the community of session musicians. His mentor and greatest influence was none other than Chuck Berry. Still living, still playing, and his daughter, Vanessa, was a VJ on VH1, where he often appeared.
I got to see him live in concert back in 1971. I’ve always said it was the best concert I had ever been to. I think because it was so personal. I have recently been to one that rivaled that concert, The Nicotine Dolls put on a great concert, they have so much fun. You should check out one of their best songs - What Makes You Sad
Early to mid 60's were prime Spy movies and tv shows. They all had theme songs like this. My favourite spy show was Get Smart, a comedy written by Mel Brooks
One thing to remember about a period piece like this is the time it was released. We were very involved in the "Cold War" and spy shows were everywhere. Yes, James Bond was the King, but we had spys and spy stories every where! Even our cartoons... "Rocky and Bullwinkle" were 'secret agents' poking fun at the tensions between USA and Russia. That music is classic "Go Go Dancer" beat!!
This song totally captures both the '60s international spy craze and the groovy '60s jet-set go-go party vibe (also spoofed in the Austin Powers movies). Johnny Rivers was a great talent.
Secret Agent was the American name of the show that came from Britain called Danger Man. Patrick McGoohan played the main character, John Drake, and he was handsome and smooth. McGoohan was the highest-paid actor at the time in Britain because of this show and went on to create and act in one of the most bizarre and compelling shows ever called The Prisoner. Give it a watch! You’ll either love it and want to keep watching or not like it at all.
McGoohan was a fascinating individual. He was offered the role of James Bond twice and turned it down because he found the character too violent and immoral. He had two conditions for his character in Danger Man- no kissing, and he must use his brain before using a gun.
The Prisoner really messed with my head as a kid. It was the beginning of my love of brain twisting stories and mind f#@$ movies. It holds up today. I'm surprised there hasn't been a reboot yet. I Am Not a Number; I Am a Free Man
I too am in my 60’s and I LOVED Secret Agent Man and The Prisoner which was an absolutely addicting fantastic series. I still watch full episodes on you tube. He was a very talented actor. Patrick Mcgoohan also costarred in the movie Jamaica Inn as the abusive uncle. That movie was based on a Daphne Dumaurier novel starring Jane Seymour. At the end of the song, you can hear someone shout, "Do Batman, Johnny!" This song came out in 1966, the same year that the TV show "Batman" started out as a monstrous success. The show's theme song was also catchy, which explains the reference.
Great reaction, Jay and Amber! This song was from the Secret Agent TV Show which aired on tv before I was in school. I knew this song, well. My oldest brother was in his teens back in the 1960's and he played this song on his guitar and sang along with it. I used to listen to him with a big smile on my face.
Fun fact. Patrick McGoohan, who played the Secret Agent, followed up Secret Agent with The Prisoner, where he played an imprisoned secret agent that literally had his name taken away and was only referred to as a number.
Another TV series in the early seventies, "The Protectors" was about a group of secret agents, as the title says, Protecting people against Criminals, The theme song was "Avenues and Alleyways" sung by Tony Christie. He's definitely worth a listen!
... two of my favorite Johnny River songs are (1) his cover of the 1959 Buck Owens classic "Under Your Spell Again" in 1966, and (2) his cover of the 1965 Beach Boys classic "Help Me Rhonda" in 1975.
I hope y'all love Johnny Rivers He is one of the best . He's still good at Almost 80 or 80 already Hey y'all watch him live where you can see him in person .. you'll be glad you did

Didn't know this was from Danger Man, but I've always loved this song! Five years before I retired 2 years ago, I worked in a really outstanding team of programmers. One of the team was a wonderful lady from Taiwan. We used to break into different songs while we were working, and this was one of them. In Sunny's honor we changed the lyrics just slightly... we sang "Secret Asian Man" instead. Worked just fine! One of the supervisors cracked up... he was 50% Korean, and 50% Japanese!
This was the theme song of the series Secret Agent, starring Patrick McGoohan. My Mom loved the series. He was a great actor and his adventures led him to all kinds of places. The last movie I saw him in was Braveheart, he played Edward Longshanks.
Back in the day, this song was red hot! It came out just when the Bond movies and spy TV shows were catching fire. This riff was awesome, we all wanted to play it, or see somebody play it.
@@johnsilva9139 I always loved the song. It was years later when I heard it was the theme for a show. I read on wiki a while back that it was written for the American airing of the show, using American star Johnny Rivers.
This song "Secret Agent Man" was my favorite song by Johnny Rivers. When I was growing up, I would buy any 45 RPM record Johnny Rivers released. We couldn't wait to come home, put it on the turntable and crank up the volume. I also loved the TV show Secret Agent Man, starring Patrick McGoohan. This era of the 60's, 70's and 80's was the best time to be alive and experience so much, and the times were so much simpler during that era of mostly everything you can think of. I'm so happy I grew up in that era. Glad that both of you have the chance to experience and jam to the music of that time. Love you both and the channel.
It absolutely is J. That was everything in those days. There was 007, the Man from UNCLE, Matt Helm, on the BBC was the Avengers, spy movies, TV shows, and music all directed toward secret agent stuff.
🔴🟠🟡🟢🔵🟣 The most famous recording of the song was made by Johnny Rivers for the opening titles of the American broadcast of the British spy series DANGER MAN. It was also used in the movie BOWFINGER (1999) with Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy 🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪
Thanks Jay and Amber! Such a classic Johnny Rivers from his long storied career. Next perhaps you can take in his last top 10 hit: Swayin’ To The Music (Slow Dancin’) from 1977.
PS Johnny Rivers recorded this for the opening titles of the American broadcast of the British spy series Danger Man, which aired in the U.S. as Secret Agent from 1964 to 1966
This theme song was particular to an American audience. "Secret Agent" was a TV show imported from England in the early-half of the 60s. However, the show there was titled "Danger Man" w/o this title music.
Secret Agent Man was a British TV Series when I was a boy back in the early '60s. The title role was played by Patrick McGoohan: who many may remember as the antagonist in Mel Gibsons' epic film "Braveheart,"
The Cold War. The Iron Curtain. Red China. James Bond was in the movies but there were easily 8-10 popular spy-related shows on US television in the 1960's. The theme music often took its cue from the famous guitar riff in the Bond movies. In the case of Secret Agent Man, they used a famous pop musician to perform the theme, also like the Bond movies. Mission Impossible and James Bond are the surviving franchises, but they had lots of competitors (and take-offs) back in the day!
Y'all have heard part of this song in Austin Powers, I believe at the end of the first film. I'm so glad you're reacting to this though! Definitely a favorite of mine. Absolutely iconic guitar riff 😎
The twanging guitar really drives this great hit of Johnny Rivers and his distinctive voice and lyrics fit in perfect with it, taking us on an adventure. I think I first heard this in 6th grade when secret agent shows were the rage, like "Man from U.N.C.L.E." I enjoy your reactions, you always make it interesting and bring back great memories!

Love Johnny Rivers. Seventh Son is a great song. It rocks and blues.
I swear the guitar riff is the James Bond riff, but just different enough to be not the same. It's still amazing.
Yep. Sounds very 007ish.
I also think "Undun" by The Guess Who sounds like the James Bond theme in the "Too many mountains..." part.
Yep, the three notes in the riff and the final chord are directly from the James Bond theme that you hear at the very beginning of every movie
It most definitely is Monty Norman's Bond riff.
The guitar is played by the songwriter PF Sloan, writer of Eve of Destruction and many more, who also played the opening riff on California Dreaming.
Fun fact. Patrick McGoohan, who played the Secret Agent, followed up Secret Agent with The Prisoner, where he played an imprisoned secret agent that literally had his name taken away and was only referred to as a number.
If you want slow Johnny Rivers, there's "Slow Dancin'" which came out about a decade after this classic.
I find it amusing when J calls uptempo songs with a beat “a little slow”. Makes me feel ancient. 😂. Love you guys.
My teenage brother used to sing along with this song. He is 74 now.
Johnny Rivers has long been a favorite of mine. Some other good ones from him, "Summer Rain", "Slow Dancing", "Mountain of Love", and "Seventh Son".
All of those suggestions are good ❤
My picks as well. ❤
Slow Dancing was one of the songs we considered for our Wedding. We went with I Like dancing.
"Poor Side of Town"
I hope y'all love Johnny Rivers
He is one of the best . He's still good at Almost 80 or 80 already
Hey y'all watch him live where you can see him in person .. you'll be glad you did
You remember that from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. It wasxfeatured heavily in it.
Love Johnny Rivers!! This song peaked at #3 in 1966. Based on a British spy series.
Thank you for the wonderful memories not only was this a great song but the theme song for one of myself and my brothers favorite TV shows …man the memories. Thank you for that.
☮️❤️🙏🌍🌎🌏🇺🇸❤️☮️
Johnny's voice on "Slow Dancin'".....Score!
"Summer Rain" for the back to the land Hippie movement and the time then.
When I was young I would have sworn that he was saying "Secret Asian Man".
Me too.
It does sound like it
YES !!
Back in the day, this song was red hot! It came out just when the Bond movies and spy TV shows were catching fire. This riff was awesome, we all wanted to play it, or see somebody play it.
He wrote this in the 60s after the first "James Bond " movie came out. The movies were so popular he did it just for fun.
Sloan and Barri wrote this for the TV show.
@@debjorgo Always wondered if it was written specifically for the TV show, or if it had been recorded before and they then licensed it for the show.
@@johnsilva9139 I always loved the song. It was years later when I heard it was the theme for a show. I read on wiki a while back that it was written for the American airing of the show, using American star Johnny Rivers.
This was first recorded in 1965 by a nondiscrept studio group called The Challengers @@johnsilva9139
My favorite J Rivers song! Love it!
Johnny Rivers had at least several hits that I remember from back then. Secret Agent Man is one of my favorites. "Summer Rain" is another
Great choice!!! Always loved Johnny Rivers and this song is soooooooo cool!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Used in Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls.
Nintendo 64 and Playstation 1 came out around the same time. PS1 1994-95, N64 1996
It absolutely is J. That was everything in those days. There was 007, the Man from UNCLE, Matt Helm, on the BBC was the Avengers, spy movies, TV shows, and music all directed toward secret agent stuff.
BBC didn't show The Avengers. It was shown on itv. The nearest the beeb got to a home made spy series was Adam Adamant.
@2:40 It was the theme originated for Danger Man , called Secret Agent when it aired in the U.S. (1964 to 66)
Great TV show theme! Summer Rain by Johnny Rivers, that's the one you need to hear next!
"Danger Man" was the series this song was written for. It aired in the UK from 1960-1962, then again from 1964-1968. Patrick McGoohan was the star.
Love Johnny Rivers!
There was a show called Secret Agent on TV from 1964-67 as broadcast in the USA but was an English TV show called Danger Man from 64-66.
Definitely need to listen to "Summer Rain" by Johnny Rivers.
I’d also recommend his Baby I Need Your Lovin’ from 1966.
PS Johnny Rivers recorded this for the opening titles of the American broadcast of the British spy series Danger Man, which aired in the U.S. as Secret Agent from 1964 to 1966
PPS Jay you said this song was “slow.” Define slow please. For its time, it is a rocker.
This theme song was particular to an American audience. "Secret Agent" was a TV show imported from England in the early-half of the 60s. However, the show there was titled "Danger Man" w/o this title music.
I've loved this song since I was a little girl.
Secret Agent Man was a British TV Series when I was a boy back in the early '60s. The title role was played by Patrick McGoohan: who many may remember as the antagonist in Mel Gibsons' epic film "Braveheart,"
This was and is one of Johnny's top tunes,it is great
The Cold War.
I've always liked this song.😊TY for your reactions.
Y'all have heard part of this song in Austin Powers, I believe at the end of the first film. I'm so glad you're reacting to this though! Definitely a favorite of mine. Absolutely iconic guitar riff 😎
One of my FAV songs of the 60’s 🎼🎵🎶🎼🎵🎶
The twanging guitar really drives this great hit of Johnny Rivers and his distinctive voice and lyrics fit in perfect with it, taking us on an adventure. I think I first heard this in 6th grade when secret agent shows were the rage, like "Man from U.N.C.L.E."
I enjoy your reactions, you always make it interesting and bring back great memories!
Love your 60s music.
Me too, Johnny!👍🥰
Three more awesome Johnny Rivers hit songs are "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'", "A Man Can Cry" and his last '80 hit "China".
Best song Johnny did was Summer Rain.
Still have the 45.
Have the album
I really wish they'd react to this beautiful song.
