This song was written by the late, great Mac Davis. He originally offered the song to Sammy Davis Jr, but Sammy turned it down because he said "I didn't grow up this way". But he knew someone who did grow up this way - Elvis. So the song was offered to Elvis and the rest is history.
Mac Davis didn't write this song for Sammy Davis to sing. He wrote it, and thought of Elvis singing it. Do you research! Mac has written many songs for other artist. But not this one!
Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee at high school age. In both cities, they lived in poor, mostly black neighborhoods. He grew up exposed to black culture. He loved gospel music, soul, rock & roll, etc. He sang in the choir of a black baptist church while in high school. Check out “Elvis Presley and the Black Community - that echo will never die”. Elvis is a rabbit hole that will amaze you at every turn. There is a reason he is such an American icon and the King of Rock and Roll. He was an entertainer that put it all on the line for what he passionately believed. The songs that others have recommended are a testament to what he believed and promoted. Please keep in mind that he sang these songs during the height of the Civil Rights Era. Elvis was the complete package. He had the talent, the looks and the stage presents like no other. Whitney Houston recalls the first time she met Elvis, “Actually you don’t really meet Elvis, you actually just look at Elvis.”
I think you would really like to study Elvis background. Elvis was not only born in the hood, he grew up in one of the poorest neighborhoods in THE poorest time in America, the Great Depression. He grew up dirt poor, in a shack his father built with no running water and no electricity. His twin brother died during childbirth, and the Presleys were so poor that his brother had to be buried in a shoebox.
He's right. @@DexTVReacts . Elvis mother AND father both picked cotton along side blacks to bring in a bare bone minimum income. This was the lowest of the low. Most of Presleys friends in Shakerag were black & broke and they considered the Presleys significantly poorer than them. Thats what one of his good childhood friends said in an interview for the great Elvis movie that came out last year. Yet Elvis played and prayed with his black friends. Elvis' mom would make sandwiches for these kids even though they didn't have enough food for themselves. THIS is what made Presley the legend that he became in my opinion because his his generosity to poor people in his adult life is just as legendary as his singin.

Elvis lived in a ghetto known as Shake a rag, in Tupelo, Mississippi, until he was 13. He always said he “could never earn enough money to forget what it was like to be dirt poor!! “ Now he’s caught your attention, please listen to some more. You’ll not be disappointed. 👌💕🕺
Actually Elvis was born and grew up in East Tupelo, not Shake Rag, which was nearby. East Tupelo was regarded as being “on the wrong side of the tracks”. One of Elvis’ black childhood friends said the only thing worse than being black in Tupelo was to be poor white. Essentially Elvis’ and his family were very close to the bottom rung of society, both in Tupelo and later in Memphis.
@@sallycook I had heard that they had to move there when he was young because Verna was sent to prison for altering a cheque? And they couldn’t keep up the payment on their house. ? 🙏💕🕺
@@julialesleysheppard Hi Julie, yes it is true they lost the house next to Elvis’ grandfather when Vernon went to jail. Sometime later, well after Vernon was released, the family did move into a black section of Tupelo but it was a nice area with professional people like teachers and such. THE LEGEND Mr BB KING spent A LOT OF TIME WITH ELVIS: 'Before Elvis we had Little Black Sambo, separate black restrooms and water fountains, and colored events that kept us away from the whites', BB King noted as he mention that Presley would attend events especially designated just for African-Americans. In June 1956, Presley ignored Memphis's segregation ordinances by attending 'Colored Night' at the local fairgrounds amusement park. The following December, King was there as Presley opened up almost unbreakable racial barriers by attending and supporting the segregated WDIA black radio station's annual fund-raising event for 'needy black children' at Memphis' Ellis Auditorium. King wrote in his autobiography that he 'liked Elvis. I saw him as a fellow Mississippian. I was impressed by his sincerity. When he came to the Goodwill Review (the event WDIA fund raisers of 1956 and 1957), he did himself proud'. 'The Goodwill Revues were important', he wrote. 'The entire black community turned out. All the DJs carried on, putting on skits and presenting good music'. In his autobiography, King said he held no grudges because 'Elvis didn't steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he'd grown up on, same is true for everyone. I think Elvis had integrity'. BB KING: 'If anyone says Elvis Presley was a racist', charged B.B. King in the 2010 interview. 'Then they don't know a thing about Elvis Presley or music history. 'Many nights after we finished our sets and I'd go up to his suite', King stated. 'I'd play Lucille (on Elvis' guitar) and sing with Elvis, or we'd take turns. It was his way of relaxing'. 'I'll tell you a secret', King winked and laughed. 'We were the original Blues Brothers because that man Elvis knew more blues songs than most in the business - and after some nights it felt like we sang everyone one of them." 'Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism', The King of the Blues, B.B. King said, 'With Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. And when I say that, believe me I should know'.

Elvis grew up in a black ghetto in Tupelo Mississippi. It was in 1935. He was so poor they buried is stillborn twin brother in a shoe box. He loved people he loved people. See his story "Elvis Presley and the Black Community". He changed culture in the 50's when white stations would not play black music and he changed that. He helped the careers of James Brown and Jackie wilson, break thru. Thanks, great reaction.
Muhammed Ali said about Elvis "I dont admire no one but Elvis is the kindest must humble person I know, he Elvis) came to my training camp once and stayed there for 2 weeks). Elvis and Ali were freinds till the day Elvis died. James Brown, jackie Wilson, sammy Davis Jr. was also among Elvis' really good freinds.

So sad, that this song is relevant till this day. Elvis never forgot where he came from. He helped everyone in need, if he heard about it. He gave the money, he earned from his Aloha from Hawaii satellite concert ( 1973), to a cancer fund ( about 75.000 dollar/ today maybe half a million). Can't tell you everything, if you are interested, watch King of Kindness, 200 Cadillacs, or A Generous Heart. He never asked for any publicity. Some songs with message: If I can dream Walk a mile in my shoes Clean up your own backyard Change of Habit "Suspicious Minds" Great reaction! Thank you!💚🌞
Actually the Aloha From Hawaii Concerts proceeds went to build the Arizona Memorial. Elvis believed it was important that the servicemen that died during the attack on Pearl Harbor never be forgotten. His name is on the plaque that is at the Memorial today!
@@marion_RYes, you're correct. It was the 1st concert E was in Honolulu that he raised the funds. I believe he was there already filming Blue Hawaii and heard they were trying to get funds together for the Memorial and he wanted to help.

@@DexTVReactsElvis was the first superstar. The entertainment you see in Vegas today, with big names playing there while they're still on top, wouldn't exist if not for Elvis. 50 Cent said that too in a documentary. His gigs in Vegas drew in people from all over the world. I remember in the 70's when he was on your and they announced the date tickets would go on sale for his concerts you had better be there when the door opened because they were usually sold out within at least 24 hours. My mom got lucky twice in 1972 and Elvis was the first 2 concerts I ever went to.

The first time I heard this song, I didn't even know what a Ghetto was nor was I a mother, but it made me cry. I was a 10-year-old kid living in Australia but my mother explained about racial injustices and the domination by white supremacist in countries all over the world, including my own. Mum was such an empathic, loving and kind person to everyone every day. Last year, Mum died a few days after we had planned to see the Elvis movie. In memory of my Mum's legacy to me I took my own daughter to watch the movie 3 1/2 hours after my mum died. I cried when "In the Ghetto" was played with the movie credits because the words still are as powerful and true as they were 54 years ago and that is tragic! I will forever be grateful to the way my mother loved and respected everyone around her...We can only try our best to treat everyone with love and respect and believe that "Every drop of rain raises the Sea. We CAN all make a difference." Thanks! I needed that rant!
Hey what's up Eddy! Thanks for sharing your story with me! I appreciate your mom for telling you about history. Sounds like she was an amazing woman. I know what it feels like to lose a parent. Man thats crazy! So humble! I had no idea he was connected to black people like that. Singing in black churches?!? I gotta tap in a little more to Elvis! Give me more songs to react to please!
This is late 1960's. He was warned not to do this song. At some venues they would tell him his back up singers couldn't come in. He'd say if they don't come, I don't play. Try American Trilogy or If I can Dream about MLK and Bobby Kennedy. He is the King and GOAT.
You need to check out Elvis and the black community documentary on UA-cam. Also, his 68 comeback special and various performances from Vegas, mainly from 1970 to 1972. Then aunchained melody in 1977 just before his death. I could recommend so many for you to watch. Elvis king of kindness. Elvis 200 Cadillacs. There are many clips of him showing just how funny he was too, and so, so kind and generous
He was a good man, he stood up for black people back inn the 60s and they tried to and did boycott him on a lot of radio stations but he did not care. He had three faithful black back up singers and they tried to make him fire the girls and he would not, he lost his twin brother at a young age and was dirt poor but would sneak down to the black churches and night clubs just to listen and be expired buy the music, and put his music on hold to serve in the Korea war. But his manager was a bad guy and he was hooked on pills and took so many pills just to sleep and perform and his heart finely sed no more. I and my family loved Elvis, RIP
Hi Dex, this was my first time sitting in with you today, thank you for allowing me to do that! I enjoyed the time I spent with you today so I subscribed and left a like for you while I was here. Yes, Elvis grew up in a ghetto. He never forgot it either! Best of luck with your channel!

"If I Can Dream" - performed in his 1968 Comeback Special - a few months after MLK was murdered. It talks about MLK's Dream. Listen. Elvis was raised poor in the South and just lived with a lot of Black folks who he saw a just folks. He just did not see any reason race should divide people up. He attended a Black church. He hung out with Black musicians and loved "Black music" - and he was right. He introduced "Black music" to the White American public who would not put "Black music" on White radio stations. He included Black performers in his backup groups and demanded they be given the same deference shown to himself. People who just listened to him thought he was Black; people who saw pictures of him knew he was White. It was at this point "important people" started talking about how rock 'n roll was going to lead our country to hell. But Elvis kept it up.
This song always moves me. Check out Elvis singing If I Can Dream from the '68 Comeback Special (white suit version). I think you'll like it even more.
Thankyou for your great reaction to a song that is still true today sadly. Just a bit of info on Elvis is that i guess his father was that "angry young man" who was imprisoned for forging a cheque for work he had done and was not paid well enough, trying to feed his own poverty-stricken family.
Elvis was below the poverty line he grew up dirt floor poor in shot gun shacks ( share croppers homes) and the ghettos of the south ( yes we have them here) im from Tx and I had great depression poverty in the 80s and 90s and can somewhat relate but elvis never forgot his neighbors or the African American families that helped his growing up and he was also native American and folks forget that jim crow crap was hard on us too..im Cherokee just like he was and id have mad respect for him even if he wasn't my distant cousin.....his gospel music is good too...he hated being called the king he said there's only one king ..king Jesus..very cool guy..and I say yes and amen to what Elvis said.. and I'm only 41 but I like old school music and I like seeing people like you react to his music with a open mind and ❤too many reaction folks are apprehensive to elvis at first because of some stupid rumors but his life and how God used him debunked the rumors and the documentary Elvis and the black community further elaborates on his story..
Elvis grew up in Tupelo Mississippi Very poor family There are many pages devoted to the KING of Rock and Roll. He has a large charity of songs from Gospel Rock & Roll . I met him prior to his death. One of the most kind men, a real southern boy . He took me out for pizza and we had his favorite BBQ Pork Pizza a a little hole in the wall in norther Memphis. When I had heard he died. I was truly devistated. I met him through his cousin.
Young man, watch Elvis and the Black Community pts 1 and 2. That will tell you basically all about Elvis growing up in the poorest part of Tupelo, Miss. And Memphis, Tennessee. And his relationships with Black artists and others. I'm glad you're another younger generation that is interested in Elvis. And yes, he was and is the greatest entertainer/singer/humanitarian/spiritual man who also humbled himself before God. In your journey listen to Elvis's gospel music. He will take you to church! That's, sadly, the only genre he won grammys for. But that's alright. We fans know he could sing anything. Looking forward to watching your reactions. God bless.
Elvis was born in Tupelo Mississippi , he had a twin Jesse Garon Presley who passed , he had a blondish red hair, when he started singing he dyed his hair jet black , Elvis loved Gospel and sang freely with African Americans
Another country singer Mac Davis wrote this song. Both he and Elvis were from the Ghetto. After leaving Mississippi his family moved to Memphis Tn. The backup vocals are done by the Sweet Inspirations which one of them is Whitney Houston's mom.
If you watch the You tube video that echo will never die about Elvis, you will learn so much of where he came from and who he was and what he stood for. Respect
Elvis was raised in a very poor Black community in Tupelo, Mississippi … one of four very poor white families living in that community. So yes, Elvis knew what it was like to be very poor. His friends were the black children he grew up with, so he always had a strong affinity with Black people & Black singers. Among his friends when he was a superstar, were Mohammed Ali, James Brown & Sami Davis Jnr. Sami Davis Jnr was offered this song, but turned it down because he had not been raised in poverty, but he knew his friend Elvis had been. So he suggested the song be offered to Elvis, & although Elvis was told not to sing it, because it could destroy his career, Elvis felt strongly that people needed to know what it was like growing up in the ghetto, so he not only sang it, he recorded it. Great Reaction from you.

Not my Research but this is great info: Thanks so much for your reaction to Elvis (Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16, 1977). Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (ua-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/v-deo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

THIS is what made Presley the legend that he became in my opinion because his his generosity to poor people in his adult life is just as legendary as his singin.

his mamma taught him respect? is that why he left a girl at the hospital to get a douche?
Elvis lived in a ghetto known as Shake a rag, in Tupelo, Mississippi, until he was 13. He always said he “could never earn enough money to forget what it was like to be dirt poor!! “
Now he’s caught your attention, please listen to some more. You’ll not be disappointed. 👌💕🕺
It's Shake Rag friend. Probably a typo. 😊
If you listen to the Baz Luhrmann interview with Elvis’ childhood friend Sam Bell ua-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/v-deo.html you will get a better idea of that neighbourhood
Thats an amazing quote! I will be reacting to more Elvis ASAP! I'm excited! Thank you for the comment!
'We were the original Blues Brothers because that man Elvis knew more blues songs than most in the business - and after some nights it felt like we sang everyone one of them."
'Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism', The King of the Blues, B.B. King said, 'With Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. And when I say that, believe me I should know'.

Got the song on my list! Will be doing it soon! Thanks!
Elvis Presley: Caucasian brother who was touched by the Gods themselves....voice of an angel, kind, generous, beautiful, and still the King of Music. EP was gangster, yo. Peace ✌🏼💯⚡❤
These stories keep getting better and better! Friends with Ali is dope! No one told me about that.
For another song with this kinda feel, If I Can Dream (live version '68 Comeback Special).
If you want to know more about Elvis the man, Elvis & The Black Community

So sad, that this song is relevant till this day.
Elvis never forgot where he came from. He helped everyone in need, if he heard about it. He gave the money, he earned from his Aloha from Hawaii satellite concert ( 1973), to a cancer fund ( about 75.000 dollar/ today maybe half a million). Can't tell you everything, if you are interested, watch King of Kindness, 200 Cadillacs, or A Generous Heart. He never asked for any publicity.
Some songs with message:
If I can dream
Walk a mile in my shoes
Clean up your own backyard

Check out “Elvis Presley and the Black Community - that echo will never die”

Not my Research but this is great info:
Thanks so much for your reaction to Elvis (Jan.
Elvis was born in poverty in Tupelo Mississippi. He knows all about living in the ghetto.
Elvis Presley MUST DOs: CC RIDER, WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES, LAWDY MISS CLAWDY (1972 Video), ONLY BELIEVE, RECONSIDER BABY, YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE, LIFE, LET US PRAY, HOW GREAT THOU ART, AMERICAN TRILOGY, HE TOUCHED ME, MILKY WHITE WAY, I JOHN, REACH OUT TO JESUS, BY AND BY, AN EVENING PRAYER, TIGER MAN, MYSTERY TRAIN, MAMA LIKED THE ROSES 🎤 🎶

I'm native American myself and proud to call Elvis my cousin albeit distant but family is family and oh yeah he was told not to cut this and he pretty much told them to screw off and Elvis cut it anyway and he was just ahead of his time and very few entertainers today can come close to him only two Hollywood guys now can come close to him in the kindness to others dept and thats Keanu Reeves and his edgier brother from another mama johnny depp .you hear how those two are really nice to their fans and humble and not phoney well Elvis was doing that longer and he probably inspired them who knows i don't know the guys i mentioned but theyre the only modernday egalitarians that can come as close to elvis as far as not being a jerk goes..but elvis was a breed all his own and he passed before I was born and we only found out he was our kin after doing our family tree but mom and I were fans long before that😊
