Elvis was a humanitarian, and an advocate for Black artist. He grew up in a black neighborhood and say in the choir in a black church. To understand him you need to see " Elvis Presley and the Black Community". Because he took a lot of abuse for singing "Race Music," that they called it in the 50's. I was 11 when he came on the Sullivan show, and my father would not let me watch him. He helped the careers of James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Roy Hamilton. He gave away cars and houses to people He didn't even know. He helped build St. judes hospital and the Pearl Harbor Memorial. So much more to him that most people don't know. Mac Davis wrote “In the Ghetto” and I’m always so blown away by how he was able to capture the ongoing cycle of poverty experienced by too many, and how those unfortunate circumstances are no different today, 50+ years after Elvis recorded this.
What Elvis did to Mac Davis's song was nothing but magic! Together it was surreal.
Elvis said that a Reverend once told him "that to dangerous to say . . .SING." So dispite being told not to record the song, as racial tension were so high, ELVIS decided the song was beautiful & had an important message, so he recorded/sang IN THE GHETTO
Mac Davis wrote this song and Elvis recorded it in 1969. Every word still rings true in 2022. Great music is timeless.

I grew up a huge Elvis fan, and still love listening to his music today ty for reacting. I would recommend American Trilogy live from Hawaii Concert. I watched this concert as a kid and was glued to the tv...awesome show. He was a one of a kind performer with a great voice

"Great" reaction?? The young lady clearly didn't get the actual message the song was trying to convey. Judging by her facial expressions, she acted as though she was listening to "Jingle Bells", or some other lively tune. The guy was much better, and at least seemed to have a clue.
Elvis has a very deep rabbit hole to go down. Even the same songs at different times is very well worth the watch.
He was being born in the ghetto in Tupalo Mississippi his father was in the penitentiary so his mama moved them to the ghetto in Memphis Tennessee where he was raised playing with black kids and went to a black church where he learned his love of gospel music and he never forgot where he came from

Why should any reactor be "positive" when reviewing a song with such a tragic message? Personally I felt that this couple (especially the lady) focused on irrelevant details that distracted them from taking in what Elvis was really trying to convey in this timeless classic.
@@hardtofindoldschooljams1114 Your misunderstanding my point. I watched a few reactions from them, and they seem to be able to point out the best of the artists. Some people just want to know "Can he really sing" and when he does, that's sometimes a shock because young ones just think of Johnny Bravo, or bad imitations. When they see the real deal, it's fun and almost a relief. As far as the song, the karate stance at the end, and the way he looked while singing it, took away from the meaning. Great Mac Davis song, and Elvis wanted to do it, but it doesn't look like that in this particular concert.
@@c-mancleveland4632 Imo, Elvis's movements (for the most part) were pretty subtle for the majority of the video, and the chop at the end of the song did not take anything away from its meaning, to me. I have watched a lot of Elvis videos, and this is the only one that I can remember that he seemed pretty solemn, which is required when performing a deep song such as this.

He started young singing in Southern Baptist black church choirs. So good picking up on His Girls as he called them respectfully as I perceived from ones interview. That Black gospel Choir thing, that you would have had to been it or feel, Is what the stories the girls Ive heard have said, is that after concerts he would often get them to all hours sing Gospel with him in the big room...poor girls as it seems if he was "there in momet" it would be for hours.......

Elvis was born in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (ua-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/v-deo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Yep Elvis grew up dirt poor they didn't even have running water they had well water. Back in the day the South was not a rich Nation it was poor very poor. Some places in the South are still very poor the Appalachian mountains being one of the poorest places.

Hi, I'm glad you have taken the time to listen to this song in particular. I'm going to say something you may not want to hear, I'm sorry. I'm an Australian white male. Boooo. lol. But we were raised on Soul music. We all loved it from the 1920's through to the 1970's. But then it changed after Disco and they sold African Americans to Gangster music and Rap. And that wasn't to give you strength, it was to preclude you guys from white people, to make a point of difference, reward {financially/fame} for those who "made it" and the "rest" were sheep to follow. It steered you to have almost your own language. Example, 'aksed' instead of 'asked' It doesn't even spell check #nojob4u. She smiled almost throughout the entire video, and then restricted her post-performance comments to "who cares?" details about background singers, etc; If you are going to criticize a reactor, criticize them about a LACK of reaction.

This isn't even the whole song and not his best version - look for one recorded several years earlier.
Sorry but you two are the sad state of the youth and it makes me angry and sad. Don't do what I'm about to recommend on review, do it in your own time but look at any documentry about how he felt about black people and what he did for speaking up and how they felt about him
I always wondered why people automatically assumed the word and conditions associated with the "ghetto" were exclusively black. All races and nationalities have poverty and poor living conditions.
