THREE TIMES she has come to the Akron OH area, most recently to THE KENT STAGE on her RECKLESS ABANDON TOUR. Seen her, got to talk to her (she's very gregarious and gracious). The second time she and her band were the opening act for a sold out crowd at The Akron Civic Theatre. The crowd had paid to see Brian Culbertson's THE FUNK TOUR (and yeh, it was good, but I had come to see her). After she closed her set, an astonished group of people around me began talking: "Who IS that girl?" "Well the rest of the show must be a freebie, because we've ALREADY GOTTEN MORE THAN WHAT WE PAID FOR." Mind you, these were die-hard Culbertson fans.
This is a reading from the Broadway play Master Class. The person off screen is reading Maria. Those are Maria's lines in the actual play, not some abusive music teacher as so many other comments seem to think.
She was trained...classically...at Julliard...didn't want to sing in Italian. She's been on stage on Broadway....didn't want that particular venue...she wants HER audience, wants to sing for them, and she gives a show.... her talents are quite extensive, but singing to an audience on her own merits is her passion....she delivers. I've had the privilege to see her 3 times, to talk to her (she's very gracious with her fans, whether new or old ones) and to get autographed (and DATED, ha ha) CDs for myself and as gifts. I told her she was my second favorite singer...ever...period. She thanked me and then asked who my favorite was. Probably was a surprise at first, but she turned her head, smiled, and said "I'll take that!" It's somebody who is about 20 years ahead of her and chose a similar path of being a concert artist on her own terms. Morgan James knew and understood and appreciated that compliment.
This isn't meant to sound condescending, but my biggest pet peeve in singing is when wannabes try to tell professionals how to sing. Morgan knows what she's doing.
Just for future reference, she is reading a script and the guy criticizing her is also reading a script, look up Master Class by Terrence McNally and the lines will sound familiar, plus the title is a dead giveaway.
Wow this is a real video of her real audition? This is the first audition video I’ve ever seen and it’s shocking to hear the off screen voice and his tone
You probably can't sing it properly if you don't know what you are saying. It would sound wrong, and opera fans would pick that right away. That is most likely why she gave up on an opera career.
The world of professional opera appears to be rather hard. I agree with altruistica that the person adressing to MJ is bullying her. Professionalism by bullying someone though is not very elegant; it is sheer jealousy.
+TheMobileMan Hello MobilemanYour reaction just popped up. I never had the opportunity to see her alive, but I agree; she is a one of a kind unique talent, even worldwide and also a great pleasure to see her singing.
three times thru the Akron OH area....saw her, met her and the band members, got CDs and autographs and she poses with her fans for pics....you will have a hard time ever going to a better concert or being thanked so graciously by such a sterling performer....find her...go see her...travel a ways if you must. You won't regret the effort you make to see her live. I even asked her if I could shoot a bit of video and post it online....her response was SURE---JUST DON"T MAKE ME LOOK BAD, ha ha!" Good luck finding that response from very many performers.
Gosh, I"m not sure this woman made the right decision when she dropped out of opera school. I like most of her work but her Verdi is another level altogether.
I wonder who that insensitive person was, who gave the masterclass. His rude and absolutely destructive way of commenting is totally unnecessary and unprofessional and furthermore not helpful at all. Must be some director who thinks acting in opera is more important than singing. Guess what - it's not! That's why it's still called "opera" and not "play". An opera singer can NEVER act in the same way an actor can do onstage, because he or she still has to sing. And not a lullaby, but most of the time pretty difficult music. And btw. famous people like Domingo and Pavarotti or Mirella Freni have never felt the need to treat their students in a derogatory way. Must be, because they have inner greatness. Which that person obviously lacks.
I admit i know very little on the subject. But I think sometimes teachers in some fields are very pushy to get the bet of the studants. In a Whiplash way. I recognize in several fields this trend like ballet acting singing. people need to be very critical and sometimes harsh. maybe it is a schooling culture thing because i heard like chinese arts schools guiding is directed to negative what is done wrong. instead of paternalizing and pointing out only the good stuff like we preffer here on east. Maybe she is this great also because of her harsh teachers.
Violetta1 Sounded to me like he was reading from a script and she was acting as well. Not sure... but if he wasn't being critical and that exchange was genuine he needs to BACK OFF of my Morgan!!!!! :)
Violetta1 yeah they're definitely both just reading a scene from a script no way would anyone respond "I'm not an actress I'm just a singer" (2:35) in that situation in real life
was this at 08 when she was ay juliard? this harsness is so uncalled for. she described juliard as every singing lesson crying. they break u down and built u back up" . i dont understand that. its an old way of thinking already proven wrong and contradictive.. i hope they will change there way if newer students become teachers but maybe there so indoct... that they teach the same. sorry for my grammar i could not tell it better in my english. im dutch. we have an music school with repetation too but they dont break u down.. good musician come from it.
...Someday I'm gonna travel far and pay "good money" to hear this lady sing. It will be worth every penny...
globalproductvendors So do I....... :D
+globalproductvendors She's on a World tour with Postmodern Jukebox at the moment. you shouldn't have to go too far.

I am lucky... got to see her live twice now... I makes me smile... she is so sweet... and her man is a good fun guy too...
Morgan James! Absolutely.
This is a reading from the Broadway play Master Class. The person off screen is reading Maria. Those are Maria's lines in the actual play, not some abusive music teacher as so many other comments seem to think.
Morgan James: flawless voice.
Morgan this is further proof of how amazing your vocal abilities are!

So glad your determination took you beyond the terrorizing Juliard instructor. Keep sharing your passion !!!!
She got bored at Julliard...her jaw is where she wants it to be and her placement is perfect. Don't stress guys, I think she has it under control.
Man, I just love her voice!

Wow this is a real video of her real audition?
This is the first audition video I’ve ever seen and it’s shocking to hear the off screen voice and his tone
Great powerful voice! And yeah, it's scripted, nobody needs to get bent out of shape because he is being 'mean'.
As we all know by now, the master class should have been auditioning for Morgan James.
Why is this Lady not a Superstar?!
Brava e bella.
uhhmmm... Morgan James for Christine Daae please?!
I am sure, she is excellent and all-round-talented, butI am missing the quality of an Opera-World-Star! She should go on with her carreer at PMJ
What piece I'd this?
+Rocio Olaya B Thankyoouuuu!
anyone who knows about opera: do you think she's good enough to have been a star in traditional opera if she decided to take that path?
Alexander Lee
Absolutely, except for the fact that she struggled learning foreign languages.
You probably can't sing it properly if you don't know what you are saying. It would sound wrong, and opera fans would pick that right away. That is most likely why she gave up on an opera career.
I was referring to the commenters.

+emile de verquilleux This was a 2008 video - just see Morgan today - her success speaks for itself! She is marvellous!
+TheMobileMan Hello MobilemanYour reaction just popped up. I never had the opportunity to see her alive, but I agree; she is a one of a kind unique talent, even worldwide and also a great pleasure to see her singing.

That's the world of classical music...he was a bit rude though.

The "skip skip skip skip" part did not give it away? Lol.
Omg! That guy is brutal. I'd so kick his @$$ for her...
What's going on here?
Wow
I actually like her operatic voice better than her Broadway vocal style
