whenever we woke up hungover on college weekends, Steely Dan was at the top of the play list. It was a subtle rock, helped to lift my foggy& groggy head off the pillow and start my day, even if it was noon. incidentally skip baxter lead guitarist in the Doobie Brothers was often featured on Steely Dan songs. check out Steely Dan LIVE on Midnight Special And you’ll see what I’m talking about

LOVE this one! There's a great story behind it...
In short, Donald Fagen befriended Rikki, the wife of one of his professors at Bard College. She was a writer who had grown up on the college’s campus and graduated from the university with a B.A. in Fine Arts a year before Fagen had enrolled there. The two found themselves at the same party, and despite Fagen’s knowledge that she was married - and the fact she was pregnant at the time - he gave Rikki his number.
    She never called...

Rikki was the wife of one of Donald Fagen's professors, who also happened to be pregnant. He met her at a party and wanted to date her so he gave her his number. Rikki ended up divorcing her husband and moved to France to study French poetry. She returned to the states and has written several books. Her name is Rikki Ducornet.

To me, Steely Dan created perfect records. The writing, the arrangement, the execution, the layering, the production--all perfect. Think about when you sit down to write something or draw something or cook something. How many times do you say "that was exactly what I was trying to do?" With Steely Dan, they just "nailed it." Aja is a perfect example of a perfect album.

  • @charlessarver8350

It was his number he gave to a woman. True story. The “Rikki” in the title is thought to be Rikki Ducornet, a New York writer and artist. Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen met Ducornet while attending a small liberal arts school, Bard College. Rikki herself, however, commented in 1998 on the meaning behind the song and offered a more philosophical approach rather than assuming the single to be just an unrequited love song.
“Philosophically it’s an interesting song; I mean I think his ‘number’ is a cipher for the self,” she said.

omg my most favourite steely dan song. i know it's considered their most commercial hit but i absolutely love how silky smooth and melodic this song is!
rikki is an actual woman whom songwriter donald fagen met at a party and was smitten. she was married and pregnant at the time so i love how it has a forlorn but yearning feel ❤
the intro is also an homage to the jazz classic "song for my father" by horace silver.
p.s. the "number" y'all are wondering about is donald's phone number, which he gave her in the hope she'd call. she did not.

What is the song about? Donald Fagen was at college and a professor, who was married, was flirting and expressing interest. Just as it was about to get going and take off she stopped calling and left the school. Thus... "I hear you're leavin', that's ok. Our little wild time had just begun." And ultimately... "Rikki don't lose that number"... his phone number. I love the solo in the middle. Epic.

Rikki was Rikki Ducornet, a New York artist. Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen met Rikki while attending a small liberal arts school, Bard College. Rikki and Fagen found themselves at the same party, and Fagen gave Rikki his number, which later inspired the lyrics.

Next time you're listening to the Dan check out Don't Take Me Alive. A bit more rockin and has one of the best intro guitar solos ever.

Steely Dan has so much variety, you would be wise to make sure you do them at least once a month.
"Peg" would be a great one to do next, but "Aja" would really wow you.

He’s telling Rikki, a girl, that she shouldn’t lose his buddy’s phone number. He’s trying to help her and his buddy to not let their relationship go.

This song came out in the spring-summer of 1974. It was a HUGE hit. Saving their career. It was almost banned from the radio. People thought the "number" was a joint. It wasn't. It was an actual telephone number. Investigate who/what the song is about. lol!

The best thing is that you have been exposed to Steely Dan at a fairly young age, so you'll have many years to enjoy them. They are a band that you always come back to and never change the channel when they come on.

Steely Dan were heavily influenced by Jazz music. That opening piano riff that you're grooving to is directly taken from a song called "Song For My Father" by Horace Silver, a pianist in the 50's and 60's.

My bestie in 9th and 10th grade and I both had a crush on a boy named Ricky. Every time I hear this song I think of them. Sadly, both passed away from drugs. But the song still brings back memories of those special years before responsibilities and early adulthood.

A flawless discography. You just can't lose with the Dan. 🎵🎶 [edit] 7:50 Amber is right on the money here. SO much of the beauty of Steely Dan was in the "clever use of simplicity", of knowing when NOT to clutter things up. Simply flawless. RIP Mr Becker, you were part of something truly special. ☮
