LOVE this one! There's a great story behind it...
In short, Donald Fagen befriended Rikki, the wife of one of his professors at Bard College. She was a writer who had grown up on the college’s campus and graduated from the university with a B.A. in Fine Arts a year before Fagen had enrolled there. The two found themselves at the same party, and despite Fagen’s knowledge that she was married - and the fact she was pregnant at the time - he gave Rikki his number.
    She never called...

Jay & Amber, you'll absolutely LOVE their "Aja", "Deacon Blues" and "Josie"!!!!!
edit- Jeff Baxter (pre-Doobie Brothers) on electric guitar!! That's Jeff wearing the beret.
Its Rikki Ducornet. Ducornet said they met at a college party, and even though she was both pregnant and married at the time, he gave her his number, although not in the same context as the song. Ducornet was intrigued by Fagen and tempted to call him, but she decided against it.

One thing I've noticed about you two is how Amber has really come a long way in how she can analyze a song and the different parts and different instruments while Jay just kinda flows along with "the groove' and giggles over the lyrics a bit! You two really play well off of each other and it's a lot of fun for us to watch. Keep it up. It's a great show. Deacon Blues and Black Cow. I'll patiently wait because there are a hundred other SD songs you could play as well. Cheers!

I could reel off 2 dozen Steely Dan songs you need to hear. Kid Charlemagne is an absolute must, but I suggest saving it until later. My first pick would be "My Old School". it is one of their earlier songs, but so much fun with a rockin' tempo, great guitar licks, and awesome horn parts. But whatever you choose you can't go wrong with the Dan! Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this one. Have a great weekend, RSR Fam!

omg my most favourite steely dan song. i know it's considered their most commercial hit but i absolutely love how silky smooth and melodic this song is!
rikki is an actual woman whom songwriter donald fagen met at a party and was smitten. she was married and pregnant at the time so i love how it has a forlorn but yearning feel ❤
the intro is also an homage to the jazz classic "song for my father" by horace silver.
p.s. the "number" y'all are wondering about is donald's phone number, which he gave her in the hope she'd call. she did not.

To me, Steely Dan created perfect records. The writing, the arrangement, the execution, the layering, the production--all perfect. Think about when you sit down to write something or draw something or cook something. How many times do you say "that was exactly what I was trying to do?" With Steely Dan, they just "nailed it." Aja is a perfect example of a perfect album.

Another excellent reaction! The Dan are my favorite band because they check all the boxes: when I want to jam, when I want to chill, when I want to think, when I don't want to think, there's a Steely song to fit the need... They're raw and rough, but also smooth and highly technical... A couple of suggestions... Don't Take Me Alive rocks hard... Aja and Home At Last are as good as smooth jazz gets... Haitian Divorce and Caves of Altamira also show off these guys' (and the studio musicians') talent! There are very few meh songs in the entire Steely catalog, and almost all are end to end phenomenal! The pianist (and writer/composer) is Donald Fagen... You guys give me so much hope for the future of music! Keep up the great work!

This is going to be long as I've just jumped the Rob squad train! ❤you guys are great and I so appreciate your response to older music!
    1. The house of the Rising Sun, is based on an old blues so about illegal brothel/ gambling/drinking establishment where the I assume grew up. And he's telling folks to avoid that life. I believe. You can search the original as "Rising sun blues".
    2. Tiny Dancer is an ode to a "seamstress for the band" who became an lover and traveled with the band hence the references to the headlights on the highway.
And yes he's an amazing pianist classically trained since a child. And one of you mentioned how hard he played! At times during his tours his fingers would burst and bless and have to be bandaged but he'd play on just as hard night after night! 😮
So yes he does play hard!! He has an expert command of it!
Lastly Led Zep is my all time favorite and I can't tell you anything and everything about them! As an 17yr old even gained some close proximity! We imagined ourselves running off with them as "groupies" but of course it was quickly pointed out we were underage, so alas they were very sweet and respectful but oh you can just imagine how much more we had hoped for!! 😂 I'm retired now and live a quite solitary life and your videos have brought me so much joy and helped me remember my first strong reactions to this stuff it would make your hair stand on end!
Please contact me anytime you have questions about a song or what it's about as I am truly (not bragging) a WELTH of information! So much love to you both for bringing back one of the first and most important joys in my life! MUSIC💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

Walter and Donald did amazing things as Steely Dan and their masses of top studio musicians. This is one of their first hits and a great tune. You might want to try My z old School, Dr. Wu, and Kid Charlemagne .

Yes, some jazz-rock from Steely Dan! This was the biggest song chart wise landing at #4 in '74. Want to hear some whiskey drinking music checkout Deacon Blues next. Thanks. 😎

Steely Dan is one of my favorite 70s bands...you guys should check them out a lot more often!! Amber, the song you forgot about that you did was My Old School...one of my many favorites. You guys should do Peg next. There's also Josie, Kid Charlemagne, The Fez, and Haitian Divorce. Even after doing these you'll still have a lot more great music to listen to!!

My favorite Steely Dan song (among many awesome songs of theirs). I was 14 when this came out, and it so reminds me of a great summer at the South Jersey Shore. Their music is so atmospheric, and this song always puts me in the best, most nostalgic mood. It's the same with Do It Again and My Old School ... all have such different sounds and create totally different moods, but they all bring me such joy.

Love this song from my childhood! My mom said it made her think of my dad because when they were dating it was popular and my dad's name is Eric, so she thought of him as Ricky I guess!
Also do Peg next, one oy my faves by Steely Dan!

Also love this one off of their album Pretzel Logic. That unmistakable Steely Dan sound, so smooth and creative. Donald Fagen has done some great solo stuff, you should react to 'New Frontier'-a great song by him-Colin Ward

Pure 🔥. Too many great SD tunes to count. Check out Peg, Babylon Sisters, Josie, Deacon Blues, Black Friday, Time Out of Mind, Black Cow, and Kid Charlemagne. You could do Steely Dan Sundays and have classic tunes for the next year.

I'm with you, Jay -- "Do it Again" is my favorite Steely Dan song. The Eagles also admired Steely Dan's lyrics, and how they would take on uncomfortable subjects. Love the reaction, as always. Peace! 💗
