I just want to say that it is a thrill to see younger people enjoying the music that I grew up listening to. I was in my teens when this song was a hit, and I've now reached retirement age and I'm enjoying remembering the truly good times I had back then with this kind of music to listen to. I didn't know it was good times back then, because I was 15 years old, and you know how difficult being that age could be. Thank you for what you do and keep on doing it!
I grew up in the 70s and Steely Dan was one of my favorite bands. They have so many good songs that you could do 3 a day for a week and not have a bad song. You have Peg, Hey Nineteen, Aja, Deacon Blues, Do it Again, Josie, Reeling in The Years, Ricky Don’t loose That Number and so many more. I think Donald Fagen is a musical genius and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was one of the greatest guitarist of all time.
They've done "Do It Again". They'd have to do "Do It Again" again. Seriously though, I agree with your choices 100%. I also added Bodhisattva in a different comment. I'd love them to react to "Hey Nineteen" next, if only for the Aretha Franklin reference, now that they know her a little bit.
I totally agree I love them and I saw them in concert and it was great and the funny part is I just heard this song yesterday and thought loud be great if they played this and then it was on tonight please play some pretzel logic
In case you haven't heard them yet, I think "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Peg" were possibly their biggest hits -- and easily two of their greatest songs. Steely Dan has so many great tunes it's unfair really. And like with this one, while their music dazzles you their lyrics make you do a double take.
Just an FYI: Riki was one of Fagans college proffesor's pregnat wife that he had the hots for. He sliped her his phone # at a party and she never called him. So he wrote her a song.
SD is 🔥. So many more classics for you to dive into: Peg, Time Out of Mind, Josie, Kid Charlemagne, Aja, Black Cow, Deacon Blues, FM (No Static At All) and too many more to list. You could do one SD a week and go for months.
"Bodhisattva" is a classic song of theirs that remains incredibly unique nearly 50 years later. "Peg" was a big hit in 1978. They also did instrumental rendition of Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle-oo"
Steely Dan is among the gods of Rock n' Roll and definitely one of my all-time favorite Rock/Jazz/R & B bands!!! I request that you react to "Black Cow."
Tip of the iceberg guys. I recommend "Kid Charlemagne", "Babylon Sisters", "Black Cow", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Aja", "Show Biz Kids", "Peg", "Got the News", "Haitian Divorce", "Pretzel Logic", "Deacon Blues", much more..
I really like this song, but my favorite era of Steely Dan is the late 1970s. I highly recommend checking out “Kid Charlemagne”. It has one of the best guitar solos ever done on record and has a funky jazz vibe. Steely Dan’s album “Aja” is classic. And I used to not be a fan of their music years ago. I thought it was pretentious crap, but oh how I was wrong. So wrong. Give “Aja” a listen. The title track is amazing.
Aja marked a change in their sound, as Donald Fagen decided to write and produce the sort of sophisticated music he'd always wanted to but wasn't willing to risk in their earlier career. The intro to Josie is a remarkable chord progression that just shouldn't work but does, exceptionally so... and then the bass comes in, kicking it into life.
Kid Charlemagne, Caves of Altamira, Your Gold Teeth, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Haitian Divorce, Don’t Take Me Alive, Pretzel Logic, Green Earrings, FM, Here at the Western World, Deacon Blues, Josie, Glamour Profession, Hey 19, Babylon Sisters. Truly an infinite rabbit hole.
Guys, you've barely begun to scratch the surface of this incredible band. So many tunes for you left to discover. Some suggestions: Midnite Cruiser Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me) Kings Changing of the Guard Pearl of the Quarter The Boston Rag Any Major Dude Will Tell You Night By Night Doctor Wu Bad Sneakers Peg Deacon Blues Steely Dan is a rabbit hole that goes very deep. The level of artistry across their entire catalog is insane. An all time Top Five band for me.
Steely Dan gave me so much ‘70’s satisfaction; their work incorporated jazz elements and most tunes had brass complement. They and the Doobie Brothers were wonderful.
Cannot go wrong with SD. They only used the best musicians, producing unrivaled sound quality. Got to see them just b4 Walter Becker passed (RIP) and they were PHENOMINAL! A few suggestions: Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, and Pretzel Logic. My favorite records by this group are Gauch and Aja. Thanks for reacting.
I, too, saw them before Walter Becker died and it was the best concert I had seen in a long, long time. Incredibly tight. It cost a lot to see them but it was well worth it. I think Don Fagen is still touring and I imagine the band is just as tight.
They nearly stood alone when it came to the "type" of music they wrote and performed - I especially like their rendition of the Duke Ellington classic "East St. Louis Toodle Ooo. Can't Buy a Thrill was a great album.
Between 1972 and 1980, Steely Dan released seven perfectly-produced albums. Though some are better than others, there's not one bad song. Never off-key, not one missed note. These guys were perfectionists.
This song was the second song after "Do It Again" off their debut album!! Talk about a 1-2 punch! The rabbit hole is deep and the numbers in the Dandom are plenty.
So much Dan to do! Insane songwriters - Aja, Kid Charlemagne, Boddhisatva, Green Earrings - and so many more. This rabbit hole would suit you guys perfectly ✌🏻
Just to add to the list: "Your Gold Teeth," "Your Gold Teeth 2" --both great and not similar at all. Shows again their versatility. And to see that look come over Rob and Amber's faces: "Everyone's Gone to the Movies"
I’m 62 and I never knew these guys recorded this song. Always heard it on the radio but never paid attention to who sang it. Learn something new everyday
Steely Dan is known for their intricate and meaningful lyrics. Like this song with the verse, "Like the castle in its corner in a medieval game". Here, they are talking about the game of Chess. If yall know anything about Chess, there is a Chess piece called a Castle or a Rook. And the Rook or Castle always starts the game in the corners of the board and has only two types of moves, vertically or horizontally. They are comparing the man in the song to this chess piece, in which he feels cornered and only has limited moves available to him. Just brilliant! And the next line: "I foresee terrible trouble, And I stay here just the same". Is just as lucent in its meaning and you can feel his pain and confliction. Just brilliant again!
I was born in 1960, so these songs from Steely Dan were in my teenage years. And it’s amazing how listening to this music just put you right back there again. It wasn’t the greatest time in a lot of ways but the songs were just amazing.
Steely Dan is not a 'he', it's a 'they'. Steely Dan is primarily two dudes, the two core members were Walter Becker and Donald Fagan. This song was with their first singer, later, Donald took over the vocals. I've always liked this track. There's so many good Dan songs I would have to list 40 songs or more, they're just that good. My favorite album from them is Aja(pronounced Asia), and the title track Aja is probably my favorite track by the Dan. They started out with a core band and moved on to using various studio musicians. They would use a lot of them, and swamp them out depending on who they thought would contribute the most to whatever particular track they were recording. They were perfectionist in the studio, and spent a lot of money and time to capture the best performance of a song, no matter what. Steely Dan, named after a prosthetic phallus in William S. Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch.
Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me and Any Major Dude are my favorite Steely Dan songs. I love when you guys listen to them. One of my favorite groups.
Steely Dan is a pretty deep rabbit hole. Lots of great music and each song unique. In your listening, don't forget Donald Fagen's solo albums post-SD. The Nightfly and Kamakiriad both have some amazing music!
I was fortunate to see Steely Dan open for Elton John in '73. Went out and bought this album next day. It started my trip down the rabbit hole that is jazz.
The first person that knows what the eponymous Steely Dan was named after wins their very own slightly used steely dan. Here's a hint the answer can be found in the pages of the book Naked Lunch by William S Burroughs
My favorite Steely Dan song is "My Old School". I never get tired of hearing that song. Since you've already listened to that one, let me suggest "Barrytown".
LOVE this band... you should definitely check out more by The Dan.. one of my favorites is Babylon Sister (shake it) and Janie Runaway.. along with Kid Charlemagne. A lot of their songs have veiled drug references due to Walter Becker's (one of the two founding members) struggle with heroin addiction. Their catalogue is extensive and spans decades.. you won't be disappointed! Love the channel guys.. keep up the good work. Stay safe everyone and peace out!
This also stands out from the rest of Steely Dan's musical catalog in that it's one of only a couple of songs that aren't sung by Donald Fagen. A man named David Palmer sings lead on this one - and apparently in some of their early live appearances, Palmer sang pretty much all of the songs that Fagen sang on recordings, due to the latter having some pretty intense stage fright in those days. Palmer was really only with them for 2 years, however, and eventually quit the music business altogether to pursue a career in digital photography.
A nice song, however I believe Fagen would have sung it better. Check out the Pointer Sisters version. I always looked forward to buying a new Steely Dan record when I was young. Still one of my favourites.
I think you have just scratched the surface of this amazing band. ‘FM’, Black cow, Caves of Altimira, Don’t take me alive, Haitian Divorce, Peg, Hey Nineteen…..the list goes on. I envy you listening to songs by bands like this for the first time. Enjoy 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸
First concert. 1973 - Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill tour. Opening act for ELTON JOHN -Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour . BEST 1st Concert Ever for a 16 yr. Old.
Classic 70s, absolutely L-O-V-E it!!! ❤️👍 I was born in 71 so I grew up totally immersed in the music of that era. It's so ingrained that I know the lyrics to songs I didn't even realise I knew!
Steely Dan is one of the deepest rabbit holes you could go down for 70's music (way bigger than Steve Miller). Very difficult to name a bad song. Thus far, you guys have pretty much focused on their earlier works. Their music evolves over the course of their discography into a more up tempo sound that I think you both would really enjoy.
Just want to say you guys have one of the better sounding audio playbacks compared to most other reaction channels. Keep up the good work ! And I just Subscribed :)
You’ve done three from the first album from 1972. They grew considerably from album to album. They put out an album each year from 1973 to 1980 except for 78 and 79. I think you should bounce around a bit. They are definitely a rabbit hole group for sure. You should go to something off Gaucho 1980 like Babylon Sisters or maybe the title track to Aja (pronounced Asia) from 1977. Hang on to your hats. It’s a fun ride.
I'm not the biggest Steely Dan fan and I have to admit that as a teen in the 1970s I didn't know Dirty Work was by them probably because it wasn't Donald Fagan singing lead but David Palmer. It does have a great chorus/hook.
What an infectious, groovy groove. Strange how they keep the Steely Dan 'sound' with so many changes to their musicians. Maybe getting the best is their secret. lol
Next up going down The Dan rabbit hole are "Hey Nineteen", and my all time fav...."FM" (ABSOLUTELY do the longer version....it's a little over 5 min and on the "Citizen Steely Dan" album).......you'll love it. And remember....Steely Dan is your favorite bands favorite band.
I was in my teens when this came out, I can't imagine how my mom didn't go nuts with me playing the album over & over & over & ...etc. I was always glad she didn't pay much attention to the words, like on this song. Great one to react to, great to see you young folks learning about some old school music! I sure have fun learning new music, it's fun both ways ;-)
Can't believe you haven't ventured beyond their first album. Their 1977 album Aja is on a whole new level. One of those top 10 albums on most people's list.
Funny thing about Steely Dan is that you can hear their songs without really paying attention and be all into the music and stuff, then when you start really listening to the lyrics, you'll often be like, "Hold up. _That's_ what this song is about?" 😂 This one's a lot more straightforward, though - a lot of their lyrics need a deep dive to figure out what they're really saying. Loved the look that Amber gave when she first realized what it was about, lol.
I've always believed that Steely Dan is the epitome of irony, in that no two of their songs sound alike, but when you hear one, you know it's Steely Dan. SD tops my stuck on a desert island band list. Please do more. Thank you for what you do. We enjoy you two very much. ✌️
Amber & Jay, here are some other good songs to react to from Steely Dan: "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Kid Charlemagne", "Doctor Wu", "Black Cow", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", "Josie", and "FM (No Static at All)".
I just want to say that it is a thrill to see younger people enjoying the music that I grew up listening to. Loved Steely Dan, and Emerson Lake and Palmer. Such a depth into all of their music
They are listening to it because today's music is rubbish.
And you *Can't Buy A Thrill!!!!* 😁
You haven't even scratched the surface of Steely Dan. It gets better and better the deeper you go.
"Riki Don't Lose That Number" is my favorite Steely Dan song, I know you'll love it. 🤔🥴✌️👍
I don't consider Rikki to be their BEST song, but it's my favorite song.

Donald Fagens 1st solo album "The Nightfly" is a gem, not one bad cut. That said, "Green Flower Street" and "New Frontier" are my currant favs.
This band is perfection. Never a mistake. You will hear elements of rock, blues and jazz in their song. Lots of brass. I love that! And great lyrics.
If you’re a Steely Dan fan like me you probably can’t think of a bad song from them.
Absolutely. 👍
True.
I totally agree I love them and I saw them in concert and it was great and the funny part is I just heard this song yesterday and thought loud be great if they played this and then it was on tonight please play some pretzel logic
I'm pretty you're a bot at this point
Not one bad song in their entire catalog!
Jay & Amber, you'll LOVE their "Aja", "Deacon Blues" and "Josie"!!!!!
And Peg
I always enjoyed "Time out of Mind"
Yes Deacon Blue is a great song .
sur - Oh YA !! Steely Dan is SO good stuff !! Thanks J & A !!
They just need to do a stream listening to the whole album of Aja!
No one has a bigger catalog then Steely Dan
That's just plain silly.
Tons of bands have larger catalogs ... James Brown, Los Lobos, The Who ...
Need I go on?
Try “My Old School”. Steely Dan is another iconic group from the 70s
They've already done it. They just forgot.
"Don't take me alive" - has one of the tastiest guitar intros - Larry Carlton's influence is all over that era of Steely Dan,
In case you haven't heard them yet, I think "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Peg" were possibly their biggest hits -- and easily two of their greatest songs. Steely Dan is so good! So many great songs/hits. Black Cow is one of my favs!
You can’t go wrong with ANY Steely Dan song. Walter & Donald were the ultimate musical geeks!
This is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time.
Steely Dan's catalog is HUGE - and every single cut is a rocker! In their early period, "Brooklyn" is a rare, subtle, mellow track that is a charmer.
Brooklyn is my most favorite of Steely Dan! 💯 the lyrics are so good!
Very underrated. Great piano background.
"Deacon Blues" by Steely Dan--one of their biggest hits, and a sublime song.
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Black Friday", "Doctor Wu", "The Fez", "Haitian Divorce", "Deacon Blues", "peg", "Josie", "Hey Nineteen"
"You have sent the maid home early..." is the most yacht-rock line ever.

Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands.
You guys should check out “Kid Charlemagne “
“Hey Nineteen”
“FM”
“Show Biz Kids”
Good one!!!! You can never go wrong with Steely Dan 🤘🏽
Exactly.
Literally. You could get a list of all their songs, blindfold yourself, point and strike gold.
@@europe7249 I concur!!! You hit the nail on the head with that one 👊🏽
@@peterhineinlegen4672 totally 👊🏽
This is my favorite SD song! ✌️♥️
What an infectious, groovy groove. Strange how they keep the Steely Dan 'sound' with so many changes to their musicians. Maybe getting the best is their secret. lol
One of the best bands! Sooooo many great songs by them. Peg, Aja, Hey Nineteen, etc. So many sounds from this group. And love this song!!! ❤️
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs.
Nice! "The Royal Scam", and "Night By Night" are wonderful tunes as well. Cheers to you all.
Can't believe you haven't ventured beyond their first album. Their 1977 album Aja is on a whole new level. One of those top 10 albums on most people's list.
Absolutely explore Steely Dan a lot MORE !!!! There is so much cool music there. You have simply scratched the surface.....
Do It Again is another great Steely Dan song.
Anything by Steely Dan you can just play all day and just chill and relax
You have opened up a can of worms with Steely Dan - so many great songs!! THANK YOU
Funny thing about Steely Dan is that you can hear their songs without really paying attention and be all into the music and stuff, then when you start really listening to the lyrics, you'll often be like, "Hold up. _That's_ what this song is about?" 😂 This one's a lot more straightforward, though - a lot of their lyrics need a deep dive to figure out what they're really saying. Loved the look that Amber gave when she first realized what it was about, lol.
For the first 30 years, I didn't know just how perverted so many of their songs were, not to mention their name. LOL
Well, the band is named after a dildo....so it's not too surprising.
Deacon Blues is rated by many to be their best song. Lyrics, vocals and harmonies and musicians are top notch. They have dozens of great songs.
Their first 7 albums from 72 to 80 are filled with great songs
A top 5 band of all time for me. There's no one else like them
My favorite Steely Dan song is probably "Deacon Blues". But they have so many great songs you really can't go wrong
