As a young drummer, I was just smart enough to know that I needed to play along with every Steely Dan song I could keep up with if I ever wanted to be a performing drummer. While I never came close to achieving the mastery of the drummers who played on those songs, I learned so much from them via osmosis that I was able to enjoy being a club drummer for over 20 years. Looking back now I know that learning how to "play in the pocket" was the best lesson I learned, and Steely Dan was the biggest influence for me in learning that...

Steely Dan was essentially Walter Becker and Donald Fagan (keyboard and main vocals). Plus whoever they recruited as the perfect one to play "that" instrument on "this" cut. The main guitarist on this cut was Elliott Randall, who had worked with them years before in "Jay and the Americans" and Fagan called him all the way across the country and asked him to help on this because he could feel the music and improvise. They had the other parts worked out but it needed something. So Elliott looked over the lyric sheet and asked them to play it through and then he would do it with them. He created an intro on the spot and first time through with them, the guitar stuff he came up with was working perfectly with what they had. The producer, Gary Katz, turned to the engineer and said "You got that?" - and the engineer says No, they said they were just doing a play through. So Katz said Okay, play it again guys, and this time, record it. And they did. When they finished, everybody was like, Perfect, that's it! And that recording went straight onto the album. Second playthrough, first recorded take. Later, when someone asked Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin his favorite guitar solo ever, THAT intro is what he named. Many Steely Dan songs took long hard work and rework. This collaboration was inspired from the first. Destiny.

@@ArtofFreeSpeech Both “Josie” and “Peg” have been sampled heavily by hip hop artists as well. I’d definitely throw “Hey Nineteen” and “FM” into the mix.
Elliot Randall completely shreds it on the guitar in this song! One of the greatest solos of all time, in my opinion.
And, he did it on the first take!
His solos were monsters, as were those in those in ''My Old School.'' Was the latter song's lead guitar solos done by Skunk Baxter?
@@timtorba0519 Correct. Skunk Baxter played the solo on My Old School. They had such great guitarists playing on their songs, including Denny Dias and Larry Carlton. Love the music!
You just opened up a can of some of the greatest funk, R&B, and Jazz fusion music you'll ever listen to. Please continue with more of this Band.
A request please,
of another Steely Dan song. "Josie." You'll be a Steely Dan fan after you hear that song. The song you just reacted to, was their first hit, (1972) that began a four decade long journey of greatness.
Reeling in the years was the fist tune I heard from Steely Dan, around 1973. Loved them ever since!
"Steely Dan", the band not the dildo, was the music "high end" stereo stores would play for customers when listening too the best audio systems.
Their "production value" on their entire library has rarely been duplicated.
You couldn't BE more right.
@@MidwestFarmToys That's funny, I only dealt with mostly teenagers of all colors and people in their 20's when my family owned 4 stereo stores in the Tri-State area of Philadelphia back in the late 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's
Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd and Chicago were the best bands too hear for low end, midrange and high end frequencies during the 70's.
Speakers like McIntosh, Polk, Harbeth Monitor, Altec, Advent, JBL, Klipsch, Tannoy, Dahlquist and Magnepan to name a few, really shined, especially with "Steely Dan" playing.
@@MidwestFarmToys Far from an empire, but we were in biz a long time.
I'm just saying Steely Dan was 1 of the bands we used for hearing low end, midrange and high frequencies from the speakers we sold, that's all.
I still have 4 speakers we sold back in the day.
Magnepans.
Still sound great playing Steely Dan or Steeleye Span for that matter.
@@MidwestFarmToys My original post wasn't very nice of me saying remove the Steely Dan from your backside.
I'm sorry about that.
I went for "the laugh".
It wasnt funny. Sorry man.
😀😀😀
There is nothing like the bands in the 70's like Steely Dan, Eagles, Kansas, etc for great harmonizing.
Definitely would not put Kansas on the list. But the Doobies, absolutely!
Crosby, Stills, and Nash (with or without Young) should be on that list, too.
And Pure Prairie League
I always loved "Do it again" so much harmony
It's a vicarious pleasure so enjoyed watching you react to this wonderful music for the first time, this is one of those groups where you can't find a bad song in their catalog.
Criminally underrated band.
huh, underrated??
Steely Dan is a band
And are one of the most sampled by rap groups
Try Black Cow and see if you recognize the beginning
Wow...is right. That moment you realize you're listening to something special.
Great choice! Steely Dan - Black Cow, Do It Again, Peg, Hey Nineteen, FM and Ricky Don't Lose That Number!
This music takes me back to the 70s. Was a beautiful time to be young and alive.
“ the things you think are useless, I can’t understand…”
The lyrics to this song are cold as ice. It's so friggin badass.
Steely Dan Never disappoints. Sit down and listen to the album AJA. Straight through. You don't have to do a video. Do it for your own edification. And yes, they are still your favorite bands favorite band.
If this is your first reaction to Steely Dan, you both are in for a real treat! Their catalog is amazing, and a listen to the full album of "Aja" (pronounced Asia) is a must. "Reelin' In The Years" was one of their earliest hits. The best way to listen to Steely Dan is chronologically in order of all of their recordings to get the full scope of their evolution as musicians. Congratulations, you discovered ELO recently, now you've fallen into the Steely Dan rabbit hole! edit: If you want to know where the name "Steely Dan" came from, read "Naked Lunch" by William S Burroughs. 😉
Steely Dan is a very worthwhile rabbit hole to go into
They're a band's band. Musicians have their albums in their collections.
I've seen them referred to as "your favorite band's favorite band" so many times. XD
I love to see people really digging Steely Dan. You guys are so cute.
I love the songs you guys pick. All classic songs from when I was young speaking of classic songs when you going to play tobacco road by Edgar and Johnny Winters live from 1970 I'm still waiting I'm going to ask you everyday too one or even Frankenstein live 1973 by Edgar winners The man's a musical genius
Come on guys making old man's day LOL I love your show
Steely Dan has SO many hits from my younger years.
Look up the song " Do it again " and " Bodhisattva " you'll be blown away.
Reelin in the years, is one of my very favorite songs!! It sounds like it was SO much fun to sing and play!! Like a roller coaster!
Great songs from Steely Dan!!
Incredible band. I've always really like their song "Do It Again"- really cool, smoky vibe with a killer electric sitar solo.
This was my vibe in the 80's. I used to play their music over and over.
Ok, you’ve just had a whiff of an epic five course meal, in hearing this unforgettable song. Now continue the tantalizing experience by listening to ‘Do it Again’ and ‘Deacon Blues.’ Welcome to a steady diet of mind blowing sound from Steely Dan. Great reaction, guys!
Steely Dan was awesome in the 70s and 80s. Must listen to their album Asia, everything on it was amazing.
One of the greatest bands of all time...no joke
Sublime. Everything about this song. Vocals nailed. Jeff skunk Baxter just amazing guitar playing. Walter Becker’s bass playing is just perfect. And that shuffle beat on drums!….
Good lord!
The entire Aja album is incredible. Home at Last is my favorite by them.
The title track is my favorite song by the Dan, but you can't go wrong with anything on Aja. It's an album that, for me, is unparalleled in rock history.
Home At Last is definitely a masterpiece!
Walter becker died in 2011
I love Aja. Every song is perfect. 😊
If I ever go to another concert... Steely Dan would be my pick! Every song of theirs is a HIT!
Such teenage memories associated with this song!
Clearly, one of the best bands, musically, of the ‘70s.
Steely Dan is the personification of musical excellence, technically and sonically it is beyond compare!!!
I first heard this in 1973 when I was a 19 year old working on an oil rig off Scotland..... They have been my favourite band for the last48 years.... Fabulous.
The name of the band comes from the name of a metal vibrator in the the book 'The Story Of O'.. If I remember right. Elliot Randall guested on this to play the intro guitar.
Lead singer Donald Fagen had a voice that can never be duplicated...ever.
The scariest thing is, that his voice is about the most uninteresting thing about this exquisite song song.
He had a brilliant solo career as well.
Steely Dan is a MAJOR rabbit hole. Best produced music EVER.
One of, if not the best Steely Dan songs is Deacon Blues. It’s a must.
LOL - Steely Dan is the name of the prosthetic phallus the novel Naked Lunch.
This music has a very special place in my heart
It's been a while since you've done any Steely Dan. May I suggest, Deacon Blues, FM, Black Cow, Black Friday, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Hey Nineteen, Babylon Sisters, Bodhisattva, and after you've digested these top-notch songs, I recommend "Aja" the song. "Aja" is in my opinion, at another level of musical genius.
Steely Dan’s, MY OLD SCHOOL, JOSIE and PEG are awesome.
First time I heard Steely Dan all I could say was WOW.
Y'all keep hitting on a lot of my favorite songs! Enjoy, guys!👍
Steely Dan is a studio band ,two guys Donald Fagen and Walter Becker( R.I.P.). They get the greatest musicians to play on their albums . From guitarist,to horns,to back up singers. The more you listen the more you'll realize you can't go wrong with them.People consider them some of the greatest story tellers in music....peace
Interesting side note: That line from the Eagles song Hotel California that says "They stabbed it with their steely knives......" is a reference to Steely Dan, as the two bands had a friendly rivalry in the early-mid '70s.
This song shows how tight they were in transitions. After the second guitar solo, such a perfect transition back to the song. This is what comes from being perfectionists. You don't allow any sloppiness in transitions.
The band takes their name from a William S Burroughs story. Steely Dan was a seggs toy.
Aw the very young years of listening to the radio while doing my homework and putting down the pencil to play air guitar to this. Like you said, fun and playful!
My favorite steely dan track is “fm” or “my old school” or “do it again” or………
My favorite Steely Dan track is whichever one I listened to last.
"My Old School" is a banger.
FM... no static at all😁
