1970 I am 8 years old growing up in Ojai, Ca, listening to this song in the backseat of our car from the the car radio. Just loving it. I got 50 cents a week for doing chores and I spent every dime on 45s. I bought this 45 as soon as I could skate down to the record store. LOL

There's something otherworldly in Donald Fagen's voice - it's like a unique musical instrument, all of it's own. And the music of Steely Dan has a depth and beauty, unequalled I think, in the entire pop/rock pantheon.

Fagen is such a card, I remember hearing an interview he did on NPR in the 90's, probably 'Fresh Air' with Terry Gross, I don't remember, when they were discussing his (then) new album, 'Kamakiriad' and one cut in particular that had the lyrics 'She's a virus wearing pumps and pearls'.. the interviewer, who was a woman, asked Fagen .. 'those are some pretty misogynistic lyrics, don't you think?..' and without missing a beat, Fagen answered,.. 'Hey man, if you don't like it.. make your own album..' I almost had to pull over, I was laughing so hard.

The lead guitarist, Jeffrey Allen "Skunk" Baxter is known for his stints in the rock bands Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers during the 1970s and Spirit in the 1980s. More recently, he has worked as a defense consultant and chaired a Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense. How about that.

I'm 54 and I first heard "King..."' when I was in my late teens. Damn those overlaying guitar textures are just too good. Cheers from a fellow human that doesn't just listen to music but appreciates the talent it takes to make real music with real musicians.

Jeff Campbell - Thanks for your comment. So much you can say about these guys- the greatness they achieved partly by moving to LA where so many great studio musicians were available. One aspect I really love is Fagen’s smart lyrics, which are often head scratchers. Leave it to an English major to go long on meaning and metaphor. Only found out today what “ King of the World” is about after a lookup on song meaning sites.

Several years ago while driving and listening to kJazz, this catchy mid 60's tune came on called "Song for My Father" by Horace Silver Quintet. I recognized the beginning piano intro...thinking out loud..ahhh this is where Becker & Fagen got that piano hook for "Rikki don't Lose that Number". This song will always remind me of my uncle's wedding in 1974, I was a flower girl, riding in the car with the maid of honor & bestman, my cousin Bruce -a groomsmen chauffeured us from the church to this beautiful hill top park for pictures...while a Steely Dan 8 track tape was playing 😊💖
Thank you Jamel for playing this song
