Every CSI show had a Who song as its theme. This became such a signature at the time that many of us who were fans would take bets as to which song would be used by the next show. They updated the song a bit for the newest version of CSI, but just a minor tweak.

This song has kind of a funny story: Pete Townshend had just come out of an exhausting meeting with record executives over The Who's royalties, and even though he got what the band was entitled to, he felt totally demoralized by the experience and went on a drinking binge to get it out of his system. Waking up in a Soho doorway and a police officer letting him go because he recognized him really happened.
The funny part of the story is he ran into the Sex Pistols over the course of his binge, and they were legitimately concerned with how drunk and despondent he was.
Just the idea of Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious patting Townshend on the back going "It's gonna be okay man" just cracks me up.

      LOL!

    • @lajollascott
      @lajollascott 2 роки тому +19

What makes the story even funnier/sadder is that Townshend THOUGHT it was Johnny Rotten, but it was actually Steve Jones and Paul Cook, the guitarist and drummer. Pete just assumed if there were two Sex Pistols there, one of them must be Johnny Rotten. So he was embarrassed, which made him extra pissed, and he staggered out and passed out shortly thereafter.

Sadly this was Keith Moon's last album on drums. He died shortly after this being released. Years later bassist John Entwistle also passed. It was always said about the Who that like most bands they had a lead singer in Roger Daltry, a lead guitarist in Pete Townshend, but also a lead bassist in Entwistle and a lead drummer with Moon. Everyone of them was a virtuoso on their instrument.

You need to react to "Love Reign O'er Me". To me it's not just the greatest song by The Who, it's the greatest song of all time. You hear the soft voice of Roger Daltrey as well the lion-like roar of Daltrey in that song as Roger puts on a vocal clinic for the ages. The drumming by Keith Moon is off the charts. It's a long, epic song with very deep lyrics. Another great one by The Who is "Bargain".

I've been a drummer for 50 years...with all the monster drummers out there, in jazz...Rock...etc....Keith Moon stands ALONE. His life was as crazy as his drumming. I always called him, "organized chaos". He seems to over play, do one fill after other and STILL keep the groove!😯He's like a painter throwing paint on the canvas at will and getting a beautiful art piece. He once drove a car into a hotel swimming pool! He once broke into Mick Jagger's hotel room while he was sleep as a goof! You have to check out the live studio version of this, where they filmed it for their movie, "The Kids Are All Right." You get to see Keith in action. The CREPPY thing for me is, the chair he is sitting in on the album cover...it says, "Not to be taken away"...he passed not long after that.

He passed only a month after the album was released. Every classic rock star has a Keith Moon story. When you ask them about Keith Moon they all get the same look on their face. Another song around the very same time was Charlie Daniels Devil Went Down To Georgia & the only version I heard on radio then had lyrics "I done told you once you son of a gun" instead of the exact same song only not edited that I heard 20 years later that says "S.O.B." The Who were an INCREDIBLY talented band. First, "THAT DRUMMER" you mention is the late Keith Moon, undeniably one of the best drummers (and craziest human beings) who has EVER lived. Second, the man on the bass guitar is the late John Entwistle, regarded by many as one of the greatest bass players of all time. On lead guitar you have crazy talented Pete Townshend, who was the principal songwriter and did violently entertaining windmill moves with his guitar before smashing it all over the stage. (Look up the videos). And finally, you have Roger Daltry, who I still maintain is one of the best rock vocalists of all time. Thanks for your reaction! More WHO, please!!

That magical, manically crazed drumming, Keith Moon ( RIP). This is one of the best rock albums ever, period .I grew up on this stuff , and Led Zepplin, etc.

Keith Moon is the drummer. He passed in 1978 at the age of 32. He blew up his drumset on the Ed Sullivan Show. He was the craziest drummer ever and that's what everyone loves about him

it was actually the Smothers Brothers show where he blew up his drum kit! it was a real bomb, Pete's hair caught fire and he had permanent hearing damage. They're lucky someone didn't die. He knew how to make his own bombs and he loved blowing up hotel toilets. No toilet was safe from him.

This song used to be my ring-tone, "Who Are You" for years. If you want to be blown away by The Who check out 'The Real Me'. You may not know the name of the Who's bassist, but after listening to this song you will.

Bargain, Real Me and their other darker songs are my favorites. Who Are You is about the Sex Pistols specifically, and the punk movement of the 1970s.

Congratulations to both of you for recognizing The Genius of Keith Moon's drumming. Keith Moon was considered one of, if not THE greatest rock and roll drummer of all time. Unfortunately we lost him shortly after this album was released. If you look at the cover picture on the album he's the one who is sitting on the chair, and the irony is that that chair says "not to be removed"... I remember buying this album the week it came out, and how devastated I was when I heard the news about Keith. He is sorely missed. And Amber the other place you recognize the song from (other than CSI) is the cartoon movie "Horton Hears a Who". You have three kids I'm sure you've seen it😉

Keith Moon gave a master class in rock drumming on this song. Like you felt, his drumming moved this song along and at the same time his dynamics were perfect for any point in the song. In the intro he did more with a highhat than most drummers can do with a complete trap set

The difference between the louder and softer parts is called "dynamics" in music and very few have used them as effectively in their songwriting as Pete Townsend.
In 2001 a benefit concert (The Concert for New York City) was organized by Paul McCarntney for the victims, their families and the first responders following the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
The Concert was like a who's who of popular artists including The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Elton John, James Taylor and many others. Other celebrities spoke between the acts. It was a very moving Concert. First responders and people who had been in the towers during the attacks and victim's families were given seats in the front rows.
In most people's opinions (including mine) The Who stole the show. One of their most powerful performances, and their songs "Who Are You" and "Won't Be Fooled Again" took on a whole new meaning. I think the concert may be on UA-cam, but you should watch it, even if you have to buy the DVD I guarantee you'll be glad you did.

Keith Moon, the first of the legendary 60's/70's drummers that left us way too soon. He died in 1978, John Bonham was the 2nd in 1980. Both as tragic. Two of the best drummers of all time. Oh ,do "Won't Get Fooled,Again" , you're welcome.

Many people thought it was a bass from the moment this tune was released right up to the present. It's an acoustic 6 string played by Pete T.
And the piano by the way? It's Pete too. Yup.
