- Neymar leaving Nike for Puma sparked quite a debate in the football community. Why did he leave Nike and why would Nike let him go? That debate was fueled when more high profile Nike players were leaving the brand or were seen in competitors' boots: Raheem Sterling, Sergio Ramos and even Robert Lewandowski.

i think its more about Michael Jordan than basketball. he is one of few sports legends (tom brady, lebron, pele etc) and the fact that this crossover happened shows intent to collab in the future aswell as respecting the other sport

As much as you mentioned Romário as a key Brazilian player signed by Nike in the past, I'd say their breakthrough endorsement deal in the country (and arguably in the rest of the world) during the 90s was that with Ronaldo Nazario. He was Nike's MJ for football.
Totally agree, he was the one who really made boots a major factor for companies and sponsorships.

Neymar is very talented. That no one even argues. But he never reached his peak and the predictions that experts and people had on him. Left Barca, in his prime age to join a club which plays in a much less competitive league, while still scoring less goals than many competitors on high competitive leagues, like EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A. He never won a World Cup, never won a Ballon D/or, which in the meantime was won even by Modric, and Griezmann was twice in the three best players on Ballon Dor list. His stats are pretty average FOR a player of his calibre on that league, and even Burak Yilmaz scored more at Lille, and he still didnt win a UCL with PSG.
So once again, we arent doubting his talent, but he never fulfilled any expectations awaited from him.
@@armendvojvoda6289 his peak wasn’t at Barca btw, it was his first year at PSG. His G/A was insane, scored 28 goals in 30 games. He was also playing amazing, skills wise. Pretty sure he got injured though and never reached higher than that

Mbappe is a fucking World Cup golden boy, had multiple big time Champions League moments already (people forget his seasons at Monaco), 3rd top scorer in PSG history (not that big of a deal until you realize that's more than 100 goals for a 20 yr old) and we know he can lead a top team. He has NOTHING else to prove and he's barely 22 LMAO
Haaland is barely 20 and already has many goal scoring records, can dribble really well, strong, fast, deadly positioning, a ~195cm demigod etc.
Don't put Pato (always overrated, even without injuries), Bojan, Asensio on the same page as Mbappe and Haaland. These guys are much more accomplished and simplg far better. A better comparison would be Ronaldo (R9). They're all phenomenal.

The only way I see any of those players winning ballon dors is if the quality in competition drops off. Mbappe is probably the best of the bunch but you can see at PSG he’s not on neymars levels

For me I think it's not easy for the younger generation to step up the next level while those 2 still playing make a huge shadow. That happened to Neymar. Let's just give them some time.

Nike are definitely planning for the future, they pretty much have a hold of all the best young talents in Sancho, Haaland, Mbappe etc, as well as the very young up and coming talents such as Harvey Elliot, Fati and Camavinga. This means 5-10 years down the line we may see the vast majority of top players wearing Nike boots and what has always been an oligopoly may look a lot more like a monopoly when it comes to football boot contracts (although of course it’s not as simple as that).

Its clever from nike to move on from Neymar. It feels like Neymar already hit his peak performance a few years ago and is no longer the same player. Mbappe, Håland, Sancho and De Jong are the stars of the future so it would be wise to put all the effort on players like that. As a marketer who has done works for Nike, I know there are some other important factors:
A major one is the risk of controversy. While players like Neymar may have huge brand lift potential, they are also controversial. This can be very interesting for challenger brands who have a large potential growth market. Your growth can just exceed your loses and giving your brand a bit of a "rough edge" can be cool to many.
For Nike, as one of the leading brands, controversy is much more dangerous and needs to be approached with extreme caution. If you piss off 2% of your audience, that's a huge deal as they are already touching the ceiling of their potential brand awareness (as one of the most recognized brands in the world).
For clear market leaders Nike, it makes much more sense to just focus on getting more brand touchpoints and enforce and maintain the current market share.

The Tennis sport has a great way to "classify" players by brand. Different type of Personality, I think that for a consumer it should matter which are the players that each brand has so the end consumer would get better brand support
