Solved a few problems! Went to the store and bought a good quality hook with a rubbery handle. The one I was using is a straight one which was helpful when the hook got caught I could push it through without getting the hook part caught. Now with the new hook, great. Thanks for the information. Dennis.

Thank you so much. I am happy to say my splitting yarn is less after watching your video. I realized it was the way I was holding my hook through the stitch after the YO was my main issue. 😊

my favorite tip was the last.... how many times i realize thay I'm literally bleary eyed and near death...but i keep going! ahhhhh! 💀
⭐ a couple of things ive learned in the past 50 yrs is...get back to basics! Make sure the hook rotates all the way downward to pull through the loop.
⭐ the other thing that is VERY useful is...size up! try even a ½mm bigger, and the results are 👌🏻!
    grrat video!

This was so helpful and informative, thank you. BIG emphasis on inspecting the yarn first - I bought some beautiful, soft yarn and I was so in love with it... but after trying to do a simple chain, the yarn was just falling apart in my hands. After thoroughly inspecting it the way you suggested, I realized the yarn was just terrible quality and fell apart the second I twisted it.

omg! i *just* started crocheting within the past few weeks and i keep unraveling and starting over! specifically it seems that *acrylic yarn* in certain brands split no matter what which is sooooo frustrating!
i have *new* unused yarn that’s already splitting and i haven’t even touched it yet! i’m going to try to loosen my tension and see if that helps with the splitting! *thanks so much* !!

Yes, it’s so frustrating to buy yarn and have it immediately split. Be patient with it and hopefully you can make it work!

The yarn is also very floppy and limp.
Very frustrating trying to do specialty stitches.

Thanks a bunch! I’m convinced I move too fast and my tension is too tight a lot of the time.

The artwork with the hand over the face behind you is Perfect for this video. 😆The face looks a bit more relaxed than I do when working with wayward yarn, but still - it made me giggle.
Does anyone know how to re-spin yarn with more twist? All I can find is how to remove twist, which is already (over)done in splitty yarn. I have a swift and a ball winder, but just not quite sure how to use them to put more twist in this yarn (Bambootiful from Yarn Bee / Hobby Lobby). DROPs Safran is another offender, but I recently found a good replacement for it (Cotton King 8/4); however, I have plenty of skeins remaining so if anyone has ideas, I'm reading!
Also, I discovered with the Bambootiful that a tapered hook using knife hold (I'm normally a pencil holder) allowed me to do puff stitches where I wasn't able to with my Tulip hook using a pencil hold. I read another tip that wetting the yarn can help it stick together. I have a small spray bottle for my erasable notebooks (aka smart notebook - Love love love them!) and am considering spritzing my yarn as I use it since the spray is a fine mist.

This was most informative ! Thankyou❣ is it also possible that the company making the yarn are not winding the ply's enough? Or could it be my hand movement too? I keep pausing to wind it but dang it keeps loosening on down (about 8" to 12's") towards the skien.

I found my acrylic yarn was ok. It was my hook being too sharp at the hook that was cutting into the strand as I worked. The first sharp head hook was a Clover Amour. The one I'm using now is an old phantom. Both hooks are size 3.50mm/E-4 US.

Does it matter which end of the skein you start? My yarn is split even before I get it near the hook. Tried tight tension and slack tension but it is always splits. Worst part is when I have made a mistake I have to undo the work and that then is a nightmare with split yarn. Dennis.

also its so nice to see some *male energy* in this crochet side of youtube!😹😹
*if* you don’t mind i’m gonna give you a tip: so i see you have a new channel and i was thinking you should maybe do a *how to crochet a balaclava* tutorial! that is a *huge* trend right now and it would jumpstart your channel growth i think!
*plus* i’d be the first to watch cuz i’m trying to make a balaclava.😹 i’ve seen every tutorial and i’m still not satisfied. also you have a great personality so mix that with a popular trend and that equals *views* !!

    Mike
    I have a question
    I do graphgans right
But sometimes I have a lot of ends in one spot and when I weave them in especially letters my letters or the area becomes thicker than the rest of the blanket
Someone in a group on Facebook suggested I tie a tony knot close to that blanket and split the yarn in 4 ways so u weave in 4 directions
Does that sound like a good idea if not what other suggestions can u give me for weaving the ends in in one little spot when u have so many ..
Sometimes when I drop my color in the back of my blanket I don’t need it again for awhile and I end up cutting it
This happened way to many times. Now I have to many ends
    I am still learning
Please if this gets to please help
This gift is now not ok
    Because his letters are thicker
And they say a good wash will soften it but not likely if I seen what I am saying

Most yarns are not spun for crochet. As a spinner and crocheter. I only spin for crochet. It is the main reason for splitting yarn.

Don't blame yourself for yarn splitting, if it has any cotton in it.
If you are a right handed, cotton yarn will split regardless of any supposed "hints or tricks" you might try. It's because of the S twist when the yarn is made.
However if you are a left handed crocheter, you will not have a problem.
So the very best tip or trick you can learn is to crochet left handed instead. It will be perfect every time.
Good luck, because you will need that too. A lifetime of being a 'Righty' makes it very hard to become a 'Lefty', even if it just for crochet!

Is it “left handed” if you’re holding the hook in your left hand, or holding the yarn in your left? I ask because it’s a little confusing with me being left handed for writing, but being new to crocheting.
