Nice video. For my maverick 88 security model I would use the magazine end screw to help mount a bayonet instead of sling. Most of the times it's not needed, but for SHTF, it's good to to have a bayonet mounted. For sling you can just attach to any of the magazine tube mounts.

Right on. I always have a can of CLP in my range bag. I have a shotgun cleaning kit, but to be honest, I haven't cleaned it yet! I was having trouble with a certain brand of shells sticking in the barrel and not wanting to eject, but I had a gunsmith bore it out just a bit and that cleared right up.

He bought an additional Mossberg 500 28" barrel on Ebay that had choke tubes (watch the video - these are difficult to obtain). The Maverick 88 security line comes with a fixed, cylinder-bore barrel and is not compatible with interchangeable choke tubes.
Yes you can, but it depends on the barrel. The barrel that came with it wasn't threaded for choke tubes. If you can replace that with a barrel that is threaded, then you are good to go.
I'd be really worried the sling attachment on the end of the magazine tube (see 4:33 in the video) would get flipped up after a few rounds and then the next shot would smash right into it and ricochet back at you. Have you checked the clearance? Might want to consider moving the sling mount back on the magazine tube.
I'm not sure that's a problem, but I did have to replace it once. In a more recent video, you can see where I installed a short spike on the end of the magazine tube, so I moved the sling mount down to the small rail I mounted there.

@ I ended up getting them online . I’m in northern Alberta and the town I’m in does not have any . But I did end up getting a cylinder choke for my 20 gauge .
VFX where did you get the side saddle shell holder? I purchased one and had to return it cause the receiver screw was to short did not reach the plate and the seller had no replacement screws.
This is what I used and the base works nicely. All the hardware fits. The only problem is that the removable shell holder slides a bit from the recoil.
I have seen adapters to the pistol grip, spacers that straighten out the pistol-grip and the stock, or have you taken care of that? Just curious? I also have a Maverick 88, you have a great set up on yours I hope you enjoy it.
Not sure what you mean. I do have a pistol grip that fits, but somehow before it got to me, it got a little twisted or skewed. Not sure how, but I haven't seen any others like that. I got it for a decent price on ebay. Was looking for an FDE one, so they're hard to find. But shooting with the stock is a lot more comfortable.
Sadly, no. I just happened to find it on ebay once and bought it for $100. Mossberg used to make them, but I think now they are discontinued. I've looked around for an official link, but haven't been able to find one. So all I can suggest is keep looking on ebay and maybe another one will pop up.
Sorry about that. I wanted something that was FDE (or similar) and that I could remove, but didn't need to be velcroed to the receiver, but didn't have rails or anything else I didn't need. I usually keep the polymer shell holder off most of the time while shooting. The aluminum mounting bracket is pretty slim and it's actually more bronze than tan, but I thought it was a good solution. Not really. I was just watching ebay for Mossberg barrels and someone was selling one that fit. This was the first one I came across and from what I've seen, it's hard to come by these days. If you're looking for a hunting or skeet barrel for this particular shotgun, just keep watching ebay and take notice of the distance between the breech end of the barrel and the attachment lug. Most aren't long enough.
Doesn’t the 88 have a fixed choke? (Meaning having a little storage compartment specifically for chokes is-for that shotgun-useless)? What am I missing, other than the obvious “who says you have to use it for chokes, anyway?”
I like your mods they all seem very functional to me. I will say though you have about 7 different colors going (OD green, coyote tan, grey, black, flat dark earth, camo). It works though!
Well, let's see. The gun is black wit hFDE furniture, which is why it caught my eye. I don't think there's any OD on it; everything I bought was basically tan, but with some things, there wasn't much choice, so the side saddle looks more coyote. The grip tape is grey. I got that because I have grey tape on all my pistols and there's not much choice there. It's either grey or black. The stock pouch is sort of multicam, but I was hoping that wouldn't clash with the FDE.
i would remove the butt stock shell holdewr..its a pain to load from yout stock especially in a self defense scenerio..also the metal shell holder that covers the whole receiver is raised up on top so you can still see your front sight
@@robbhays8077 Just Mossberg 500 barrel. It is a genuine, non-gunsmithed barrel. Mossberg did make them a while ago, but they don't anymore. I'm pretty sure they are rare, so you are lucky to come across one. Keep looking and maybe you'll come across a used one that someone's selling on ebay. Just check on the measurement of the end of the barrel to the lug where the magazine tube attaches. It will need to be noticeably shorter than usual.
Have you seen the little rubber gadget that goes up into the loading port allowing you to feed and RELIABLY cycle the 1.75"shells? They work great and really increase the capacity of the gun. You can get the shells in slug, buckshot and birdshot variants. Plenty of power for defense in slug variant and very recoil friendly. I believe it is called "opsmod variant 2". Like 15 bucks and installs in 10 seconds. Fits the 500 590 and 88's. A must have.
@@danthe2Afan That's one way to look at it. But the last thing I want to be thought of is rude, especially if I'm not trying to be. Now if I am trying to be rude, then that's different.
Nice setup you have. Personally I would look for a shorter front sight but that works. Pistol grips are fun toys but forget about accuracy with them, a shotgun needs to be AIMED just like any firearm and shouldered. If you can find a full stock w/ pistol grip you would never have anything else.

In a recent comment, I was accused of being rude. That is certainly not my attention. If I've said something rude, let me know and I'll apologize directly.
Mossberg lists the weight as 6.5 lbs (like all their similar shotguns). It doesn't feel like that to me, but the accessories I have added are pretty light and don't add noticeable weight. There's a lot of cool stuff that you can put on it that doesn't really do much except add weight.
Nice shotty but as you gain more knowledge you will find it best to mount your light on your forearm grip it will give you total control of your light without changing the position off your free hand
Interesting idea. But in order to do that, I'd have to change out the foregrip to have a rail to mount the light on. And I'm not big on having the light on a part that moves back and forth. I do like it on a stable location closer to the muzzle. On my guns playlist, I try out various different shotgun lights: ua-cam.com/play/PL-j0Mfj9QbRtYO1EfLrGnlAVicb3ey4z7.html
Sorry, no. I didn't think of that when I uploaded this. But if you check the comments, many people ask this question for particular items, so I answer those in my replies.
I just found one in CA at sportsman’s warehouse. Went in to buy ammo for my other 12 gauge and on a whim asked if they’d gotten any in and lo and behold there it was. With a fat 28 inch field barrel on it lol. Bought it anyway on the spot. 270 out the door. They’re out there you just gotta be the first one there in the morning unfortunately.
Hey, are you ignoring Hat, Shoes, Gloves!?! How can you accessorize and ignore Hat, Shoes, Gloves?!? And with March right around the corner those Fall colors are out! Maybe bright Lime, or Brilliant Blue or even Day Glow Pink. You know just open yourself up to Easter Pastels! Cummon; snap snap Butch!
I thought the video answered that. It didn't cost much and adds to the functionality. You can take from it what you want, but if plain jane is your thing, that's OK as well.
Good question. Recently, a new comment popped up, strongly accusing me of being rude and saying how terrible I was in my comments. The person making this comment was quite adamant. So, I'm just seeing if any of it is true.
Walk in a room with an armed intruder and you have a light on your gun you will be shot within 1 sec. Unless you are going to flash bang the room before you enter, I wouldn't run a light or laser. Jic..it ever happens...
But they are a valid tactical accessory; it just depends on how you use it. Some info out there suggests that a light is a must for a home defense shotgun. I think being able to turn it off quickly is key.
That is so weird. Many people have told me that and I heard it more than once when I worked at ILM. It used to freak people out there when they heard me, but didn't see me. Because of that, I was actually planning on coming as George Lucas to the next company Halloween party if I ended up being there that long.
For a "budget build" you sure spent a bunch of cash on accessories. You mention the pouch for choke tubes, but the 20" security barrel isn't threaded for tubes, and the field barrels that are threaded will not fit the 20" magazine tube. Besides, a Mossberg field barrel that is threaded for choke tubes cost nearly as much as the Maverick 88 itself. And the pistol grip ... with it installed, you have to break your ready to fire hand position to activate the action bar release, and you cannot remove the trigger group for a field strip with the pistol grip installed. You bbq may need to field strip of the gun and a dropped on the side of the receiver, because that sometimes causes the litter pins to use our of position, thereby locking the entire action inoperable, requiring pistol grip removal (additional hand tool) to reset the jammed lifter. It happened to me, btw. PITA Thought - can the barrel get hot enough to reform the polymer heat shield? I heard that happening on a pencil barrel Bushmaster. But ??? Additionally, while some accessories are nice and tacticool, the more you add, the more you snag. Also, why but 2-point sling attachments AND a single point attachment? Budget build?
Autocorrect messed up one paragraph. What i meant to type is that if dropped flat on the side of the receiver, the pins securing the litter can jar out of position, and the action becomes locked up tight. To reset the action, you have to remove the trigger group and field strip the action components. The pistol grip blocks removal of the trigger group, so you have to carry a hand tool required to remove pistol grip. Otherwise you're dead in the water.
No problem at all with the polymer heat shield and I'v found that it is actually a helpful feature when I'm doing a lot of shooting in a short time. That barrel really does heat up. As far as the pouch, you could put anything useful in it, even extra shells. I do actually have choke tubes, since I found a barrel for this gun that is threaded for chock tubes. It was on ebay for just $100, so quite a deal; for just $300 I have a good hunting and defense shotgun. As far as the pistol grip, I do find that I like the full stock much better. As far as 1-pt vs. 2-pt. sling, that's just a preference. Either one is OK, but I find the 1-pt better for tactical use and 2-pt better for general use. I haven't hunted with it yet (with my 28" threaded barrel), but when I do, I think I would prefer the 2-pt.
Your stock Sucks!! A Kicklite stock is the way to go. I also made a custom sling mount attachment point at the base of the mag tube from stainless steel. Blue force gear 3 point sling and a mounted side saddle. I also have the heat shield and fiber sights. I'm finding this a very useless video!!!!! With the barrel your getting way out of the truck gun short as possible. If you like it great. I have a JM 930 for what your attempting with a cheep pump.
My stock stock sucks? Okay. I can't understand much of what you are writing, but I do see a lot of exclamation points. It's not a truck gun; that's not what I need. But it's helpful know know how useless you found this video.

This is what I used and the base works nicely. All the hardware fits. The only problem is that the removable shell holder slides a bit from the recoil.

You're just discussing modifications of your shotgun.

a pistol grip is unnecessary for a home defense shotgun, they never fit correctly. I would never attach a pistol grip on my 88 Maverick.
You won’t find a new one for $200.00 in 2021. 😤
Sadly, you are right.
Congratulations..ur upgrades are more money than the maverick..which isn't hard do

@@vfxtutswithdan1893, yep just say some star wars shit and you have it nailed! Nice gun review too.
I've been accused of being rude. If I've been rude to you, let me know and I'll apologize.
PITA
Thought - can the barrel get hot enough to reform the polymer heat shield?
