I’ve watched a couple of these disassembly videos and why did NOONE but you mention the tab on the top of the bolt can be pressed in. That makes things so much easier
I’m not sure but when I looked at the reassembly it only made sense to mention the tab. I’m glad to help!
anyone else watching cleaning videos before buying?
I usually watch range tests before and cleaning videos after or I make my own.
:)

Ive owned my 88 for yrs. Somewhere around 3500 rounds. Never cleaned. Only a good wipe down. Never had a problem.
These things are tanks in durability.
Right on!
Holy shit 3500 rounds with out a cleaning and it still shoots that's amazing
Just bought one of these and this was a massive help since I like to take things apart and tend to clean my guns about once a month to make sure they are in working order even if I haven’t shot them since the last time I cleaned them , thanks for a very easy to understand and in-depth disassembly and re assembly
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Travis. This was hands down the most effective lecture on the Mossberg 88/91. Appreciate it.
I’m long winded but I always assume beginners will watch this video. Thanks again.
Thank you very much for your detailed yet simple instructions -- I was able to follow it to strip, clean, lube, and reassemble my new Mossberg Maverick 88 today. 😃
Good deal! Glad to help!
Thank you so much. My son is 15 and started trap shooting club a couple weeks ago. We just finished cleaning his gun for the first time. Your video was SUPER helpful!! ❤
Glad to help and I hope his season goes well!
This video should be considered as essential as reading the owners manual.
I bought a Maverick 88 for my son-in-law as his first shotgun and emailed him a link to this excellent tutorial.
Thanks for watching!!
Thank you for this video. I have built a couple ARs. I have had every one of my handguns completely disassembled but have never completely broken down my Maverick 88. I always just remove the barrel and clean it and hit everything else with an air hose. Now I know how to break it completely down and put it back together.
Glad to help!
I just ordered a Maverick 88 20”. Great video! I appreciate how detailed you are.
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic tutorial. Thank you for showing us how its done. It saved me a lot of time
Thanks for watching!!
Finally a simple straight forward channel, thank you! Ive messed w guns all my life learning on my own which isn't so good but when nobody shows ya n ya wanna know ya gotta wing it.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, this was very thorough. I'm glad this exists now
Thanks for watching!
Very nice video, and Im with you Sheriff Matt. Had carried myG19-3 for over 20 yrs, Duty weapon, all weather,no issues. Was searching for the G45-5, hard to find one due to popular item, and finally added one to my collection. At 70 yrs young, still practice the 7yd and little more on occasion, and that G45-5 performs. Has improvements over the G19-3, and is now my CCW. 17 rd mag had me hooked, and short slide/barrel flies out of holster. Thank you for sharing. Your vids are spot on. Good luck. Well done.
Thank you for watching!
Great video, just helped me clean my first shotgun, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
this was definitely very helpful and possibly the best explanation ever
Thanks for watching!
For a second I thought you were a Mossberg Tech! Hands down the best maintenance TUTORIAL I have seen so far. Just picked my security model last week and already put several rounds through it. READY for the first maintenance. Have the same version as you (black on black) same stock shell carrier and same velcro side saddle. I will also recommend the heat shield and truglo green pointer sight. 👍
I wish I worked for Mossberg! Sounds like you have a solid build on your shotty! Thanks for watching!
I will definitely recommend you get the Magpul stock! 👍 that was the last upgrade I bought for it and hands down probably the best one.
Just got the Maverick 88 security myself and I'm hearing you on that eat shield and sight!
do it! game changer and adds some cool looks! I also bought the Magpul stock and that is by far the best upgrade. @@thebean3995
Best video on the Mossberg.
Thank you!
Just got this exact gun! Before watching this I did have a hard time reassembling ! Thanks
Glad to help!!
Just got one of these on a trade deal. Pretty good for dove. Thanks for making this video. She is smooth acting now.
Thanks for watching and I’m happy to help!
Thanks for the easy to understand, and easy to follow
video I bookmarked this for future reference I just ordered a Maverick 88 😎👍
Glad to help and thanks for watching!
Great help. Organized with good videography. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Detailed video! Well done. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial, I like the step by step and the extra tips. Just picked up my Mav 88 cruiser for the house. I’ll be on this video throughout the weekend lol
Right on! The video should come in handy!
Definitely was worth the watch .
Thanks for watching!
Super helpful, thank you!!
Thanks for watching!
I can transfer these steps easily to my Ithaca model 37. Thanks Travis 🤠👍
That is good to know! You are welcome!
37 is alot different no comparison to a 88maverick
@@edwardkujawa of course it's different 🤨 it's the method... the process I was referring to.
Thanks
You are welcome!
This was super helpful. I’m a bit rough and it really feels no different than before I cleaned it, despite confirming the cleanliness with a light, but I’ll just have to see how it does at the range and compare. Thanks for the great tutorial!
After the first or second range trip you will start to notice the action smooth out a bit.
@@travisp11 Good tip, I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you
Well done. 👍 The maintenance of one's weapons is very much overlooked by many. As a retired gunsmith and police armourer for thirty years, 75% of weapons I had in for repair were simply poorly maintained and filthy. A sad thing especially when the weapon belonged to a fellow officer.
And I was impressed that you use Clenzoil. After 63 years of shooting and cleaning my weapons, I've used dozens of oils, cleaners, and such. None proved to be superior. The absolute best is Clenzoil. There's nothing better...
Thank you for the kind works! Yup, Clenzoil is my go to! Thank you for watching!
I've always been taught to only clean in the direction of the barrel. It adds a bit of time to cleaning your weapon since you have to unscrew/rescrew on the tools, and it might not make a huge difference, but I do it every time.
Same here. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
This reminds me, I need some range time with my 870 Hardwood Home Defense.
Absolutely!
Great video thank you for the help.
Glad it helped
Certainly not as easy to clean as my 9mm but I finally did it for the first time today after maybe two or three range trips with the shotgun. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Great video for newbee's the correct way to clean your fire arm! They should be teaching this in gun classes!
Thank you!
Awesome video! Thank you!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you. Great video
Thanks for watching!
Just got myself a Maverick 88 took it to the range for some target shooting and just cleaned for the first time.Your video definitely helped me out. ✌️
1. Clean out the barrel and add rust protector. Baby oil (parrafin) is good.. 2. Spray some dry lube in the bottom of the receiver. 3.Wipe off the excess. Job done in less than 4 minutes.
Good advice!
Thank you
You are welcome!
Haven't got an 88 yet, but best takedown & reassemble I've seen. Thanks
$240 @ MidwayUSA isn't bad at all.
Thanks for watching!
Drink every time he says "set that off to the side"
I prefer “just a drop of oil or two”
Great video
Thanks!
Very good.
Thank you!
Excellent video. Just purchased my 88 and so this video is huge for me.
Glad it helped!
Nice!
I have a model 88 i love it I Have one that i can change Chokes. Im very Happy with mine
It’s a great shotgun!
I’m just as weird as you.. thank you for a thorough tutorial.
Glad to help and thanks for watching!
Thanks so much!
Just future note, I was new doing this and it was hard to see how some of the internal parts were lined up while reassembling. Would be better if you showed the parts to the camera more slowly
Nonetheless, thanks!
I got some new studio lights so things should be lit up much better in my cleaning videos from here on out. Thanks for watching!
I should clean mine some day.
Not my favorite to clean but the second time was much easier.
@@travisp11just got my maverick 88 ran maybe 20 rounds thru fixing to do a full breakdown and clean just to learn something!! Just learned how to clean my edc 9mm I’m a new gun owner I’m only 21. Definitely plan on keeping my firearms clean .
@@travisperry4814 right on!
Dude same
Are the parts just wet with oil/solvent or is it just the lighting? That Lucas Gun Oil with the needle tip might be warranted here, instead of just oiling all over and hoping the oil seeps from the end of the pivot pins to where it is needed. You need a workshop, bro, instead of stinking up the kitchen with Hoppes! 😀
There is a coating of oil on the parts but the finish of the shotgun is also shiny. Yeah yeah, I hear ya. I need better lighting in the man cave and I can do my work down there.
The manual says , coat all metal parts lightly with gun oil. I will say, this is a little more than I use.
@@brianhoxworth3881 that’s fine. I usually wipe off a the excess after each step.
Can I use hoppes #9 as the lubricating oil instead of the clenzoil? Are you using CLP on all the parts first and then following up with your lubricant?
I have since switched to Aegis Gun Care products but you can do a coat of CLP or a coat of Clenzoil, wipe it off and then re apply and you are done.
What about spraying parts off and especially inside the receiver with gun scrubber spray?
You can but just be sure to lube afterwards.
Hey everyone! Quick question, I bought the Maverick 88 cruiser two days ago and am having an issue I never had with any weapon I own. With the barrel on this shotgun won’t fully pump forward and lock there (thought it will without the barrel on, making it essentially useless at its current state. Any idea why it’s doing this?
It sounds like maybe the barrel isn't 100% re seated in the receiver or maybe one of the bars that locks into the bolt came out. Possibly the shotshell follower popped out on one side. Try a dissassmbly and reassembly and see what happens. The bolt is a bit of a pain to get back in there.
Is it necessary to clean it right out the box?
I always do just to inspect and make sure there are no issues. You also get manufacturing grease and oil inside the gun when they are built and that can gunk up.
where did you that ammo holder for the stock?
Amazon I believe.
Does this apply for the Mossberg Maverick 88 cruiser too? I'm assuming they both have the same types of parts just no stock
I would think so but I’m not sure. But my guess would be yes
👍👍👍
Hi. New maverick 88 security owner here. Fantastic video. I'm looking to replace the forend with something closer to the mossberg 500 stuff so i can install the streamlight racker and to do that you need the mossberg 500 action bar assembly.....ok so my question is, do you have to remove the bolt and all the metal pieces inside in order to remove the forend or can it be done after just removing the barrel? Thanks for your time. And your video will be saving me some cuss words and aggravation. Thanks again.
The bolt connects to the arms on the forend so it’s basically a full disassembly.
@@travisp11 ok thank you. I appreciate it.
Mossberg is easy to field strip n clean
It is!
I just ordered this model. Is it a good idea to do this before I fire it for the 1st time?
I would. Get the factory grime and grease out of it before you shoot it. This will also ensure that there are no issues inside.
i sure hope that pin doesn't come out on it's own. kind of scary to think it's just that pin really that keeps me in the game
I don’t think it will walk out. I’ve never had that happen on a shotgun
What is the brand name of the vice/stand you are using?
MTM Site N Clean I believe. I have done a review of it on my channel a while ago. I love it.
I have one more piece above the trigger assembly, now I have to figure where it fell out of exactly...
If you look up a parts diagram on the Maverick 88 you should be able to see where that part rests in the trigger pack.
@@travisp11 yeah it was the ejector thing. I hate this gun, lol.
I heard that you have to clean after every range visit. But do you have to clean to this degree?
You don’t but I do.
Is there a way to tighten the hand guard?
I don’t believe so.
Unfortunately, I do not believe there is.
Chuck the brush & rod in a drill AND GO!
Not a bad idea!
did you shoot it ? looks clean
I believe I shot it before I cleaned it. I would have wiped it off after getting back from the range but nothing was cleaned until I made this video.
First time gun owner: Q. I'm probably being overly cautious but I can't get a shell into the magazine (20 gauge) it only goes about 3/4 of the way. I don't want to force it what am I doing wrong?
I would take off the magazine tube end cap, the spring, the stopper. It’s possible there is a shell limiter in the mag tube
Can you link the products?
I would except you would have to go to a separate website
Can I get links to all the items you are using ? please and thank you
I have to be careful for the links I post on YT videos anymore, especially for firearms accessories. Most everything I bought can be found on Amazon.
@@travisp11 I understand UA-cam is like a hawk they will keep an eye on anybody on a sharp point, but thanks for answering my question, have a good day 😊
@@jeffreycounts91599 you too! Thanks!
You ever have problems with your magazine/barrel mount screw not wanting to tighten? When I remove the screw and thread it into the magazine tube, it goes without issue, but, it won't hold thread to tighten while seated in the barrel mount and off comes the barrel! The threads can't be damaged or the screw wouldn't go in by itself apart from the barrel. As per the owner's manual, I've only finger-tightened the screw, never used a wrench on it. When I find a 7/16-inch fine threaded bolt, it will replace the stock screw, no matter how goofy it looks, it just looks like a poor design.
I would send it back as some part of it could be manufactured out of spec
@@travisp11 Definitely a manufacturing issue. The barrel mount doesn't allow the nut to tighten straight. A 7/16x1.5 hex bolt solved the problem. Good as new... probably better.
@@rockwellrhodes7703 Mossberg customer service should take care of you!
@@travisp11 Only problem with that is I don't have weeks and weeks to wait around for that to happen. But, as I said, I fixed the problem, myself. I don't know where or how it happened, but, the gun was modified or they didn't use a proper screw to begin with... rest assured, what's in there NOW will work!
I'll only add that this is the third gun I've bought from a certain shop and it will be the last, I've had issues with every one. Can you say "Old Boys Club"? I think they have their clientele that matter. There are getting to be a lot of those in the land, these days.
@@rockwellrhodes7703 I’m glad you got her fixed and yeah, it’s time to shop around for a new FFL

hey! my wife won't let me do this on the kitchen countertop lol you rule!
When I was married my wife was fine with it so long as I wiped off the counter top with a Clorox wipe when I was done. Plus, the Adsense revenue the vidoes generate quiets them down a bit. Thanks for watching!
