.410 was originally a British land owners round that steadily grew popularity as a light weight downed pilots round post WW2. Great for small game, defended myself and two other against wolves with it during a winter hunt/primitive camp. .410 is adequate as long as you dial it in well and know it's very short range limitations. Cool video idea you guys.
You are exactly right. Folks from where I live in S.C. have been cleanly taking deer and pigs with a .410 for a long long time. I think the biggest challenge the .410 faces is getting past a lot of hunters' egos. They think it's a child's cartridge or a "starter gun" but used properly it is very effective.
Grew up learning on a single shot 410, rabbits, squirrels, the occasional partridge. I still think it made me a better shooter. back when ammunition was easy to find I had a good 410 round that patterned well at 25 yards for my kids to hunt turkeys. I am going to get some TSS loads and see if I can leave the 3 1/2 12 at home.
I’m 57 years old. I have hunted with my 410 since I was 11 years old. I have killed untold numbers of upland game of all types. I now have a new Henry single shot 410 that is totally awesome.
I was 8 years old when I got my first firearm. It was a Sears & Roebuck bolt action single shot .410. It took a lot of squirrels and rabbits. Flying game is a different story. My brother did nail a woodcock with that same gun. My stepmother's father was a about 5' 6" and 120 pounds. He loved to turkey hunt with the .410. He had a break action single shot with full choke. He even shot deer with it before Missouri restricted deer to 20 gauge and higher for deer. He got a 12 gauge shotgun but hated the recoil. One of my uncles had a Savage Model 24 in .22 over .410. For him it was the best squirrel gun he ever had.
It is a bolt action shotgun. It only holds one shotgun shell. They were very common when I was a kid. You learn to load real fast when you missed or there was more than one bird or animal.@@jamesrx4514
I think what some folks miss is that a #6 pellet leaving a 12 bore at 1300 f/s carries the same energy as a #6 pellet leaving a .410 bore at 1300 f/s....and you just said that...an analogy that I use to explain shot density to folks is throwing golf balls and ping pong balls. They are about the same diameter but the golf ball is much denser and that relates to how far it travels and how bad it hurts when it hits you.
I had four .410 single shot Savage guns. I have given 3 to my grand nieces and I have one more that's just about old enough for hers. I won't have any but they will hopefully enjoy them forever.
That's exactly how you should plan gun ownership. Pass them down to relatives. Hopefully they treat them as important family heirlooms and not quick pawn cash for their meth fix.
I have a Winchester Model 42 .410 I bought used for $50,00 back in the mid 60's. I used it for rabbits and Pheasants. I took many a Ring-neck with it. Still have the gun today.
I've hunted with a Stevens 410 for many years mainly in my youth. I and my hunting partner picked up Tristar semi-autos 3 years ago, and started reloading 3" hulls with TSS using the improved choke in #9s primarily for doves, and #7s for Turkeys, #7s for upland birds, #7s & #3s for ducks, geese and cranes. For waterfowl #7 TSS is in the pipe for the 1st round and #3 TSS for the other two. All of these loads have clocked 1420ish thru the crony. TSS has been devastating with these pellet sizes on everything we hunt. The #3 TSS packs quite a bit more punch (it equates to BBB lead shot) (and 40 to 60 yard is no problem) however, there is only 36 pellets so you need to be on your game. As others have said and I agree its a good idea to pattern your gun and its really a seasoned shooters gun. As a youth I started hunting with the Stevens 410 and probably went thru 15 boxes of shells before I ever hit a dove or a pheasant so it was a bit frustrating at first but eventually got better with the little gun. I also reload for all my other gauges but in the last three years I've only shot the 410 with TSS reloads. The Tristar is a little over 5lbs with little to no recoil or muzzle blast. I will continue to use it as long as I can get the necessary reloading supplies after my current supply runs out. Sweet sweet little 410 gun.
I used a 410 ga single shot for rabbit hunting. Most shots were close range, it didn’t damage the rabbit as much as the higher pellet count of the 12 ga.
For starters, use 2 3/4 12 ga shells if you want to get better. Or just use a 410 from the start. A short 410 is also crazy great as home protection gun.
I do fly in fishing trips on a regular basis and i just got a .410 for the specific reason that its light, easy to pack. its not my round of choice obviously, but in this situation where every pound counts, it works.
He goes over it pretty fast, but I have seen a .410 with an open choke tube that a guy loaded with his own triple-ball shells, using paper-patched muzzleloader pistol balls. The cool thing was that at 60 yards all three balls were in a 5-6" triangle. His worst pattern was 8". That's MUCH better than any commercial 000 buck loads I've seen for a .410.
I have that Stevens 301, and it does a number with TSS! We use TSS on turkey, and 3" lead rounds on squirrel and ruffed grouse. Great small game setup and pretty versatile!
You fellas are so young 😂. Gotta love the excitement over ammo, calibers, and firearms, that some of us older guys have been using since before you were thought of 😉. Truthfully, you young men are very knowledgeable and I'd be lying if I said that I haven't learned many things from your podcasts. I was hesitant to click on this "410" video but I'm glad that I did.

Been awhile since you posted this I realize, but an installment delving further into .410 slugs -- groupings, penetration by designs & materials say out to 100 yds -- would be appreciated (when there's any ammo available to shoot that is : - )).
I'm not a 410 guy and probably never will be but it's cool they're improving it. Young or smaller framed kids a 410 is good because it doesn't have a lot of recoil and with better shot technology it just makes it that much better. Great podcast guys!!!
I love the 410 for squirrel. I never was much of a squirrel guy, but recently started REALLY enjoying the extra time in the woods with a gun so small and light.
I just bought and sold one of those 301 .410 Turkey models. A gun you can’t find ammo for is just a cool paper weight. Didn’t take a loss on it so no damage done. Had a .410 growing up and took many squirrels and rabbits with it. As well as a couple deer. Eventually moved away to the 12 exclusively. Then got nostalgic and bought that 301 and over the last year have only found 2 boxes of shells. Small bore reloading components aren’t any more available than loaded shells.
Hey guys if by chance you read my comment I have a question for you will the new Henry lever action .410 shoot and cycle the TSS loads. I'm really debating on buying one n will for sure if they'll shoot those loads. I love the .410.
The problem with 4 10, It is an expert's gun . And a 28 Gauge literally puts it to shame . You cannot make an a² load ,4 10 you can make a² load out of 28 Gauge. The 28 Gauge will pattern much better than 410 ever will
I have an old family friend that has been using a .410 with normal lead game load for turkeys here in Michigan for decades (not sure if it’s always been legal) but he swears by it and hasn’t used another gauge for turkeys since.
I have that exact 410 Savage. I bought it in January but I cant find ammo for it yet. Its a cool light weight gun. I bought it for when my kids are big enough to hunt. Im thinking turkey hunting is a great segway into other areas of hunting. Plus we can use it for squirrel and rabbit hunting too.
I have 2 boxes of TSS 20ga Turkey loads for my daughters shot gun, I still need to pattern them to see which choke they like but I have heard really good things about them. Also I have been looking at a .410 semi auto for fun shooting. With TSS loads it might be more useful than just fun.
Very cool to hear that the .410 is making a bit of a comeback. Just got my Dad's old guns and he had a .410 in the mix. Hopefully the ammo won't cost an arm and a leg to get at some point.
Ain't much you can't take with a .410 if you use it within limits, same as anything else. Between bird, buckshot, and slugs you just stalk in close and lay em down. Makes flying targets a bit more fun, but even a 7yr old can slip up and drop a deer or squirrel. Heaven knows thousands have lol. Great survivor gun, camp gun, bugout whatever you wanna call it. I got a few single shot and a bolt action 3rnd'er, that bolt action is sweeeet cause it's so light and versatile.

I love the old Steven's double trigger- bouble barrel I had years ago . I killed a lot of pheasants, rabbits and squirrels with it . I practiced on pidgin and eventually killed ducks too . Double trigger guns made it nice for game and distance considerations . I never liked recoil so the 20 and 410 were very nice to me .
I met old guy in a store, that used .303 brit brass cases to reload for his 410. He just used a cardboard disk and some wax to close it up. Don't know how true that is, but you could look into it.
I 've always heard regarding wing shooting with a 410 is it's either a youth caliber or an expert caliber. I can't imagine being able to use 9 shot 28,20 or 12 gauge tss at 30-40 yards on a duck. That's a game changer. Very expensive though. Federal 3" 410 #9 tss pellet count=294. Federal speed shok 3" #4 steel=240 pellets. Velocity is 1100(410) vs 1400(12 gauge).
410 is perfect squirrel gun 👍. Doesnt tear the meat up. Gotta aim sharp though, especially with a full choke. But with a little practice you can still nail a squirrel on the run. Its easy to point and shoot a bigger shotgun and hit running squirrels but i dont like meat all torn up and full of lead
A bolt action 32 inch rifled barrelled full choked .410 isn't a joke gun by far whether with a slug, bird shot or magnum pistol bullet. Food for thought
How do you like it? I got the short version as a gift from my old man. Well actually he ended up ordering two on accident, he couldn’t wait... hahah I’m still trying to figure out what I’m gonna do with it.. 🍻
I’ve hunted with a 410 off and on since I could carry a gun. My favorite squirrel gun is a bolt action mossberg 183D. Toss a slug in there and it is plenty capable of taking down deer.
Picking up a TPS Arms M6 tomorrow. interested to see how the .410 does on grouse and quail... It's a combo .22 hornet rifle so should be fun for small game/varmint. It's not an ideal turkey gun unfortunately. but I'll probably just use my 12 gauge for that since its what i got lol.
I just bought that same Stevens Turkey model. Mostly for the squirrels here that stay out of range of my pellet gun. But I might just hunt turkeys with it. Won't be using anything that cost 50 bucks for 5 shots though. lol #4,5, or 6 if I can find them. I do plan on getting a cylinder screw in choke and some brenekke (sp?) slugs if I can find them. And a red dot. Deer hunting is moslty dense woods here. I use a 30-30 with open sights almost exclusively. But would like to take one with the Stevens 301. FYI up here in Maine, you can legally hunt deer with a 22 magnum rimfire rifle. I think it is the only state in the union. Not that I would, but nice to know.
I bought a mossberg 500 410ga TSS turkey gun. It came with a turkey choke. I bought mine for squirrel hunting. The pattern master black turkey is a very good choke. Tristar make a auto loader 410ga. It's there turkey gun. It has a pistol grip and camo. Only way shoot a 410 much is have a reloader. Last squirrel season I killed 100+ with mine.
The step from 20gauge to .410 doesn't necessarily need to be taken. 28gauge is a thing, and I do think it's starting to grow. Benelli put out Super Black Eagles in 28 not long ago. Just as a matter of geometry, the small bore stuff quickly struggles with pellet counts, trying to fit all of that into a diminutive space. At some geometric point things become much easier to stack pellets and get a decent pattern.
I am an old turkey hunter and if you can not get a turkey within 20 to 30 yards you are not supposed to shoot at it. Many birds have died with #6 standard loads and head shots only. All this is is to sell . Great the Vortex fellow said it all.
I have a Bond Arms derringer that fires .410/.45 long colt. I fired a .410 from the 4.25 barrel 😮. It rocked my hand ✋🏽. Next shot was 2 hands. It would be a excellent vehicle gun .I keep it in the cup holder ready. What would be a good .410 slug to use for defense to end the threat?
.410 slugs work for deer just fine at reasonable ranges. BB's and an extra full choke will do fine on turkey, squirrel, sitting rabbits. BB's and a full do well for running rabbits and flying birds that are further out, modified for closer in. It's never not been good for hunting, just requires more care and precision to use well. 24 BB's in 1/2 oz, plenty capable.
I just Bought me the Stevens 301- 410 Turkey Gun. I`m getting older 65 to be exact I have a 16, 20, 12 and Compound Bow and Cross Bow. I was looking for something lighter to carry with less kick so I`m going to give this 410 a try on Turkey next year. Thanks for the information enjoyed it. Going to Sub to see what you Guys are about.
I've shot 12, 20, 16, and now 410. I can't handle the recoil of my 835 anymore. Ive traded it for all 410s. I have a 500 Mossberg, Yildiz o/u, and now a TriStar Cobra 2. I reload all my shells. I reload lead for squirrels and skeet. Bismuth for waterfowl. The bismuth crushes birds over decoys. I was shooting 7s but now going to 9s. I'm even looking to duplex them for ducks. No crippled birds. I agree it is an experts gun. Enjoyed your show on the 410 but TSS is going to have to come down in price before I switch.
The .410 is totally legit for hunting. But as with any weapon you must be familiar with the loads and limitations. I know the "father/creator" of the TSS turkey loads. All of his TSS loads are amazing.
I had no idea they upped the game on .410 like this. I’ve never been able to hit a damn clay with .410. My mom never missed but I had to use at least a 20
It’s always been a legit shotgun in my opinion, #6 and I wish Remington would bring back the paper loads for the fact I found it kept the bore clean compared to the plastic loads.
All I’ve got is a few boxes of 28 ga left on the shelves around here. I have seen some places with a box or 2 of 12 ga lead #6 shot they were asking $15.50 for a box of 25 no thanks.
@@-B_G- Used tungsten and bismuth shot for waterfowl hunting, I know it's effective. I guess for turkeys and relatively stationary targets at close ranges it's an option.
jayfxdx- I have a turkey . 410 and with tss 9.5 will outshoot and out penetrate my 12ga with #6 3 in magnum lead loads at 40 yds. It’s very impressive stuff for shotguns
@@-B_G- Sounds like it fills a niche for turkeys quite nicely! My shotgunning consists of a waterfowl hunting in Saskatchewan with 30+ bird daily limits and a case of 3.5 nitro steel BBB. TSS or bismuth is just to much $$$
jayfxdx- sounds like a waterfowl paradise, snow geese this time of yr? All we shoot here in GA is wood ducks with a 3 bird limit, and occasional mallard or teal. 20 ga with #4 steel is what I use in fall waterfowl season

What round for does? Thank you.

I met old guy in a store, that used .303 brit brass cases to reload for his 410. He just used a cardboard disk and some wax to close it up. Don't know how true that is, but you could look into it.
I have one of the Mk.III SMLE Enfields that was converted to .410
@@2k7duramax Now thats pretty cool
I 've always heard regarding wing shooting with a 410 is it's either a youth caliber or an expert caliber. I can't imagine being able to use 9 shot 28,20 or 12 gauge tss at 30-40 yards on a duck. That's a game changer. Very expensive though. Federal 3" 410 #9 tss pellet count=294. Federal speed shok 3" #4 steel=240 pellets. Velocity is 1100(410) vs 1400(12 gauge).
Can you do .17hmr?
What’s the sight on that camo stock shotgun?
Looks like a Vortex Venom.
In shooting clays with 410 (3” #6)
A bolt action 32 inch rifled barrelled full choked .410 isn't a joke gun by far whether with a slug, bird shot or magnum pistol bullet. Food for thought
A rifled barrel with a full choke?
@@-B_G- A rifled barrel with any choke.
Pick up this week a Henry Lever Action 410 Shotgun... Can’t wait to shoot it at the range this weekend
How do you like it? I got the short version as a gift from my old man. Well actually he ended up ordering two on accident, he couldn’t wait... hahah
I’m still trying to figure out what I’m gonna do with it..
🍻
@@DSToNe19and83 I love mine !!! Awesome shooter … You can check my unboxing video on my UA-cam Channel
With new loads my `16 ga is killing my 3.5 inch 12s.
Love 410 always have. I use it for raccoon and squirrels just for funsies. Easy hide getter
I’ve hunted with a 410 off and on since I could carry a gun. My favorite squirrel gun is a bolt action mossberg 183D. Toss a slug in there and it is plenty capable of taking down deer.
I have 3 .410 shotguns i love them all. I have a single shot pump and semiauto.
I have a Tristar
I have a couple 410 including a new lever Hinic. Love them.
When talking of BBs do you just mean shot or the size BB ? Confusing.
Would like to see a 308 10min video. Getting a new rifle and looking for more info on the 308
I really enjoy your content guys!!!
I would love to hear what these guys have to say about 28 gauge
light weight single 410 with #4 perfect squirrel/rabbit gun.
I think it’s the perfect survivalist chambering. Slugs for personal protection and deer sized game and shot for rabbit and bird sized game.
I love my ruger no.1 such beautiful rifles
You should do 300 norma next episode or 300prc vs 300 norma
A .410 would be good for close range small game, like grouse in the woods.
As a minimum...yes.
More than one deer would Love to disagree with you (if they could)... ☆
Model 97 Winchester hammer was first turkey gun. Cool factor even 40 years ago was great.
.410 slugs work for deer just fine at reasonable ranges.
Enjoyed your show on the 410 but TSS is going to have to come down in price before I switch.
.410's are a blast to shoot! A lot of people don't quite realize the versatility of them either.
The .410 is totally legit for hunting. But as with any weapon you must be familiar with the loads and limitations. I know the "father/creator" of the TSS turkey loads. All of his TSS loads are amazing.
Can we please get a cartridge talk on the .300 Winchester long mag?? 😂😂
I had no idea they upped the game on .410 like this. I’ve never been able to hit a damn clay with .410. My mom never missed but I had to use at least a 20
My friend took a bear with .410 slug with bad shot placement. It’s most definitely a respected round
I love my mossberg 500 gold trigger in .410
It’s always been a legit shotgun in my opinion, #6 and I wish Remington would bring back the paper loads for the fact I found it kept the bore clean compared to the plastic loads.
I'd love to get a 410 can't find the Shell's anywhere
Get a 20 gauge, theirs ammo everywhere for it.
@@bcjdwbiernfjherwfbowfib I'm in Tennessee there's no 20 gauge anywhere
@@johndusablon1895 dang.
All I’ve got is a few boxes of 28 ga left on the shelves around here. I have seen some places with a box or 2 of 12 ga lead #6 shot they were asking $15.50 for a box of 25 no thanks.
7mm Mauser review please
Have a side by side 410 love it for small game birds
The 410 is a legit rabbit/squirrel/ruff grouse option, beyond that I really have my doubts.
Tss .410 round will outshoot a 12 ga with lead in most cases. Don’t doubt tss, it’s on a different level
My shotgunning consists of a waterfowl hunting in Saskatchewan with 30+ bird daily
limits and a case of 3.5 nitro steel BBB.
