    I just started with dead cells like 2 days ago. It's on the Xbox game pass so I would say that it is definitely a great game for beginners. It's brutal, yet rewarding. Every time I die I don't feel cheated. I know where I made my mistakes and just go back in to get angry over and over again.

    First of all, man I love your intro, I would usually have cursed your entire family on 10 generation for having spent so long in a 6 games video to talk without starting to present one of the games, but not only your explanation was really accurate and awesome, you educate people to the genre definition as well as shutting every « these aren’t roguelikes, your description said roguelikes » comment ( I could have been one of those 😔 )
    Second, thanks a lot, rogue legacy is so often forgotten, I dearly love that game, like you it was the first roguelite where I have invested a lot of time and made me get more of them, kudos for this little gem.
    Concerning the list itself, you said not having put Isaac due to the difficulty, the list being for newcomers to the genre, I would think that dead cell and enter the Gungeon can be pretty brutal. I would have included risk of rain 2 ( for the multiplayer possibility, making runs less hard and more fun to approach the genre ). I’ve hooked a few of my friends to roguelites with that one. Neon abyss is a fantastic one too, and a lot easier as well.
    Nonetheless great video ✌️

    the game I got me into roguelites was neon abyss. When I first got into the genre I didn’t understand it at all. The first one I ever bought was wizard of legends but it was hard and I wasn’t getting it. than when I got neon abyss I actually learned the style of game was a rogue lite. but being a platform 2D shooter made it easier for me to grasp. I think what it was, when you die you go to a area where you can upgrade perks. The perks made it easier for me to get that it’s permadeath but you get something for playing. Once I got into it I started playing wizard of legends and now I love it, I also got enter the gungeon and now I’m waiting for the switch to have dead cells on sale lol. Great guide

    What i love about Dead cells is that the game is a platformer, that doesnt feel like one.
    I really suck and hate platformers (probably related btw) but dead cells was an exeption for me, you don't have to do extremely tricky jumps, or fall to your death just because you jumped a little bit early or something, in dead cells there is no fall damage, you just get stunned if you fall from a REALLY long distance, you have a lot of tools for movement: rolls, wall jumps, wall runs, double jumps, smash jumps (jump then smash everything below you), you can actually AUTO GRAB on ledges, and climb up platforms automatically, so none of that "oh you didnt grab that ledge" or "you were 1 pixel below the ledge-grabable zone" or "you didnt perfectly did the double jump so now you wont reach lol" bs.
    Everything feels extremely smooth and fast paced.

    Didn't skip to the end of the book! Thanks for the honorable mention of Into the Breach. I understand the turn-based mechanic didn't do well on the starter pack concept oh well.. It's good that you highlighted the pausing in FTL as decisions depend on how much you want to manage these fights.
    I'll give those Action / Real Time Roguelike games a chance, starting with Enter the Gungeon! Cheers!

    I’d say Isaac is more new players friendly over gungeon at least from my experience, I had to play with the wiki constantly open for weeks and before I started recognizing weapons and synergies while on Isaac you just need to turn on the hud that show the stats and 90% of the items are explained by themselves. Gungeon also has a more complex overall structure (like secret floors and kinda hard to find secret rooms) than Isaac in my opinion. Great video nonetheless and you definitely deserve more recognition

    • @SkipMcLazy
      @SkipMcLazy  3 роки тому +3

      I see what you mean. I think the built in guide/ammonicon in gungeon helps. No, you won't know what an item is the first time you see it, but at least you get the full explanation after that. But I see what you mean.

    I feel like the turn based and grid based criteria on the berlin definition is the reason why everyone is so fussy about roguelike vs lite, the turn and grid based mechanic is probably because of the software limitations (or era difference idk, if you know a thing or two about programming you can make rogue from scratch in a a few hours of work)so that shouldn't really be a big factor in determining if a game is roguelike or not

    • @SkipMcLazy

      Yep! You read my mind

    • @davidskidmore3442
      @davidskidmore3442 2 роки тому +2

      The turn-based grid playstyle was due to the game being played on old green/amber on black text-terminals. Every key press went to the server, it sent commands to re-draw the ascii-art map. I agree that it's pretty limiting to the genre to require that.

    Dead Cells has discovery. Discovering new enemies/zones (I get that is low hanging fruit), discovering secrets and secret areas. Most importantly there are the secret zone areas where you get bits of lore to slowly understand some of the story going on behind all the hacking and slashing.

    My first rogueli(t)e was Enter the Gungeon. Here's the list of all the ones I've played.
    Enter/Exit the Gungeon: not brutally difficult, lots of focus on the high variety of weapons. Quite a few neat references. Lots of learning how to dodge the enemies. 5 main stages, 5 optional stages, no looping. -Blasphemy op-
    Nuclear Throne: like Gungeon, but way faster gameplay and way harder. Lots of characters to unlock, requires dodging skill and strategic choice of mutations, allows you to loop infinitely instead of taking one of the two endings. -Fish can roll.-
    Risk of Rain 1/2: probably my favorites. Lots of very unique characters and items, has difficulty options ranging from easy to terrifyingly hard. A bit ring dependent, but the game isn't afraid to let you become game breakingly powerful. 2 final bosses, infinite looping, wave based survival mode. RoR2 may get more dlc at some point and both have decently big modding scenes for pc. -bungus moment-
    Crypt of the NecroDancer/Cadence of Hyrule: my third favorites, maybe a tie with Gungeon. Dungeon crawlers with rhythm based movement. Almost entirely skill based. No infinite mode, but lots of very challenging modes and characters to try. Necrodancer got a new dlc recently. -Reanimate!-
    Dead Cells: -finally a non top down game- my second favorite. Incredibly difficult with optional assist mode, loads of stages, tons of well balanced weapons. Watching the game looks like pixel soup but playing it is much better. Unlocking everything is a very long grind. Not infinite, but high replay value. Still recieving free updates and some paid dlc. -they literally added frying pan nunchucks, you gotta play it-
    Downwell: very short 4 stages + 1 boss, not super hard, it's literally 3 dollars just go get it
    Blazing Beaks: like Nuclear Throne but much easier and slower paced. Items have a risk reward system where you pick up bad items and cash them in for good ones later. I think it loops infinitely, I never beat it.
    Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon: Necrodancer if it was a puzzle game. Loads of characters, 3 major updates planned, infinite loops. -Propellor Rat best girl-
    Wizard of Legend: insanely high moveset customization, pretty difficult. All about learning to dodge and finding nice move synergies. 6 main stages, 4 boss stages. -lightning chain go brrr-
    (I have also played Hades, Skul the Hero Slayer, and GoNNER, but not enough to summarize them here)
    Edit: wrote this halfway through the video, didn't notice most of these were already mentioned. Oh well.

    hi, you talked about it in the video about roguelikes and roguelites-but I want to bring up the fact that I think the games listed are too different from each other in general. It's probably so you can help new people find even their most out there wants, but the only two ones that are semi-related are Skul and Dead Cells since they're both action platformers.
    BUT
    now that I think about it. A lot of the classic/traditional roguelikes are REALLY hard to get into. Like, they're so much fun when you know them, but trying to learn Nethack takes a week to get the basic commands then another week to know early game survival.

    • @SkipMcLazy
      @SkipMcLazy  2 роки тому

    I like both traditional turn based Roguelikes and the action Roguelikes. Just depends on what I feel like playing at the time.
    Also the card games that play as Roguelikes.
    I generally keep the three as their own sub-genres, and recommend them as such depending on what someone is looking for.
    I have friends who won't enjoy a classic Roguelike, so I'll recommend action Roguelikes instead. And friends who don't like actiony stuff, so I'll tell them about good turn based Roguelikes.

    I’m surprised Risk of Rain 2 isn’t on the list. With its three difficulty settings, item descriptions in game to let you know what they do, third person shooter gameplay, and artifacts that can modify your runs to make it easier or harder, Risk of Rain 2 feels incredibly friendly to people who never played rougelikes.

    For anyone wondering, from when he said the definition has changed over time. Now rougelikes have you restart the same everytime while in rougelites something caries over to your next run. I see the Berlin interpretation what makes Rouge (the first game in the genre) Rouge but not what makes Rouge a rougelike. That is why the definition is so strict. In fact from what I've seen there is an extra rule that say it has to be text based, so yeah, that isn't happening anytime soon.

    • @SkipMcLazy
      @SkipMcLazy  3 роки тому

      There are varying degrees even in there. What about games that unlock items? It's still progression, but relatively starting over. Best to not worry about the technical definition. 😃

      @@SkipMcLazy Personally I say that if it makes the game easier (or harder) than it's a rougelite. Like I would say enter the gungeon is a rougelite since none of the weapons are "better" just more variety. I would say this opinion got me into many arguments but the only time I ever talk much about rougelike/lite games is now and when I recommend the genre to friends.

It's not too overwhelming due to how slowly things unlock, though I do think you should use the platinum god website to know what items do (or use the mod that has item descriptions after you've "beaten" the game once)

      I also started with BOI:WOTL and flash isaac, they haven't aged very well imo. I think base game rebirth is a good starting point for beginners in roguelikes (better than most of the recommendations in this video). Just save DLC for when you can actually beat the Blue Baby/Mega Satan/The Lamb pretty consistently.

    That's a nice video and a very solid list. I would just like to comment that you got the meaning of "non-modal" a bit wrong.
    A modal game is a game which is separated in two or more modes. The easiest (non-roguelike) example is Pokémon. In Pokémon, you have a "walking" mode where you can explore the world, and a battle mode. You can't use Pokémon attacks while in "walking" mode, and you can't also wander around the city while you're in a battle. These modes are separate, which means that Pokémon is modal.
    In a non-modal game, you should be able to attack at any time and also move at any time. These should not be separate modes for a game to be considered non-modal.
    So, Slay the Spire is actually a modal game, since you have the part where you move through the map and the part where you battle, and they are very clearly separate. Dead Cells, on the other hand, is actually non-modal, as you don't enter a "battle mode" when you reach an enemy as you do in Slay the Spire.

    I'm new to the genre. I've only played enter the gungeon and I'm loving it. I'm like 50-60% done so I was wondering what other similar games are out there. To me the genre is just about unlocking new items each play session until you have the skill neccesary and items good enough to reach the end. Basically the same thing you describe in this video. I don't care if it's also a card game, a third person shooter, a close combat hack and slash, etc. That's not what defines the genre.

  • @sagehashtag6215
    @sagehashtag6215 Рік тому

    this video is so well made, but my only problem with it is the choice of games. everything checks out as a starter roguelite until we get to dead cells. thats where everything speeds off track. dead cells is honestly the hardest roguelite i've ever played, which is said the same by many people. most people take at least a month to complete their first 0bc run, and dont even get me started on 1+ BC. you just gotta remember that you're speaking to noobs of the genre who have 0 experience whatsoever. I can also say the same about gungeon, because they really put hell in bullet hell. gungeon is also a pretty damn hard game that noobs are going to have a really hard time getting through. I think that the video is so good, but you just need to reconsider at least these choices as both dead cells and gungeon are very hard games that noobs wont be able to get a good grasp of.

    I'm gonna go ahead and be that guy and just say that I was playing ADOM, ZAngband, and yes, even Rogue back in the early 2000's in high school. Those old ASCII games take a lot of time to just simply learn the controls for, much less make it past the first few floors of the first dungeon. While I'm no snob or autist, I can understand why people in the "Traditional Roguelike" community get particularly anal about others bandying the term "Roguelike" around when the VAST majority of people have no clue what "Rogue" was. Couple that with the fact that the people who play these games are enthusiasts for ultra-hardcore gameplay and strategy to the exclusion of "graphics" altogether, making them a niche of a niche of a niche of gamers. The underground of the underground of games. So, unsurprisingly, having the mainstream essentially co-opt their term and applying it to games that are in many ways loosely if at all based on anything resembling the thing it supposedly took inspiration from, frustrates many of the Reddit-Users. Kind of like the way slang or inside jokes become memes, the term "Roguelike" has taken on a life of it's own. The fear here, I guess, is that the origins and true meaning will be lost as more and more companies adopt this term to lend credibility and entice people to buy their games. As an example, most of the games you mention in your video, "Hardcore" might be a more apt classification, but because of the dilution of the term, using "Hardcore" in games is recognized simply as a nebulous marketing term to provide a consumer with that brief fleeting anticipation of an authentic experience only to crush that hope in short order with the realities of the gaming industry, but I digress.
    This is admittedly my first video of yours, so take a like and a sub. Also, if you haven't already, maybe try giving the old school Roguelikes a spotlight or overview video and give them some love. Great suggestions in this video, keep up the great work, I'm off to check out your other videos.

    I really think this genre would just be infinitely better if they had the option of permanent character progression or difficulty mitigation in some way. Hades did it perfectly where I could turn on a modifier, if I wanted, that increased my defense every time I died until I could actually make it through the game and it didn't penalize me in any way by turning it on. Unfortunately I know of no other game in the genre that does this.

      Slasher's Keep makes dying part of the core gameplay. You scale, get to a point where enemies outscale you, die and you keep some stats and perks with every death. The game is designed for you to die multiple times in a run. I've only had a no-death run once but I cheesed the game pretty hard.

    the definition of the roguelike gender is diferent from the rest because of being so specific, but we must consider, when it was created, we only had copies of rogue and just a few things experimenting with the formula.
    look to the soulslike for instanc, we have many games the exactaly copies dark souls, they have estus, bonfires, staminas, but what makes dark souls unique is very simple, the ordinary enemy you find is as strong as your character, and many are even stronger, facing two at once is usualy deadly. same for roguelike, justa have a game with random regeneration and something resembling a perma death.

    I agree that starting with Isaac is a bad idea. I started with Isaac when it was still in rebirth like 4 or 5 years ago and it was so hard to learn the genre. In Isaac I feel like your more dependent on getting broken item combos compared to other games that have a greater reliance on skill

    Wouldn't recommend enter the gungeon, it is slow, very hard (even for rogue like standards) has a lot of hidden mechanics and is one of the most luck reliant in my opinion (this game without a really good weapon tends to feel like a slog). I would recommend hades on the place. And even tho I love binding of isaac I wouldn't recommend because fast reseting until you get a good item looks strange.

    Heh. I don't like metroidvania games so i didn't like deadcells too. This game is my enemy right now because all of the roguelike lists occupy place for this game. Hades is another enemy. Though i liked hades for it's story and the way it progresses and i think good of this game i didn't quite feel enough gameplay there (lots of god combinations didn't change gameplay much). I like kind of rogue like where you get some abilities\disabilities, have to adapt and create build around it.
    List in the video is good though. I think i will download Crypt of necromancer now
