While it seems to play a lot like Hades you actually need to play it more like an MMO or something. You want to figure out a spell rotation and when to use basics and how many rotations of it it takes to build up signature charge. You basically wait till and enemy is vulnerable, do one of your rotations, dodge till your spells are off cool down, repeat, and throw in a fully charged signature spell. Don't worry about getting signature every room it's basically there to just make sure a room doesn't take too long. By rotation 2 or 3 of your spells you almost always get it and then just use it to clear the remaining enemies. The real fun is figuring out what combat pattern to use with each spell load out you find. Even the same starting build will end up playing differently once you get a few more spells in the run. Very few of the spells are actually bad if you have the right build and play style. Anyways try it co-op if you get the chance. I really think that's where the game shines. Do you perhaps know Iratus: Lord of the Dead? It's quite a bit like Darkest Dungeon, but with you being the ancient horror, in this case the titular arch-necromancer Iratus, which is trying to escape the dungeon. Combat reminds me of DD, but the progression through the story is a lot more akin to Slay the Spire with you having a map with branching paths. What I like is that instead of having to watch for the stress of your minions, the mindless undead you command can damage the health or sanity of the enemy, both of which being viable playstyles against most enemies.
This video was great - editing, presentation and topic, all of it! Nuclear Throne really reminded me of Enter the Gungeon and I'm now interested in Slay the Spire. Also, I suggest checking out West of Dead, Gunfire Reborn and Roboquest - the first two especially are some of my favorite roguelike/lites from this year!
Good recs, I've heard of the other two but I'm not familiar with West of Dead. Also, I didn't know the original rogue was on steam. I definitely need to play it at some point given my love for roguelites lol
Really enjoyable video. Gotta check out a few of these games. I'd HIGHLY recommend you check out Gunfire Reborn if you're looking for another game to add to the list.
One aspect of risk of rain 2 that I feel is often overlooked is that the logbook entries are just so well written. I would legitimately buy a risk of rain book because of how well it’s written.
Nice vid! I'd recommend trying "One Step From Eden" and "BPM: Bullet Per Minute" to discover more roguelikes. The first one has kinda hardcore gameplay but is very lovely in his artistic direction, and is very unique. The gameplay is a big mix of many things, a bit disturbing at first but very enjoyable once you get the hang of it. The second one is an fps where you have to time shooting and reloading with the beat. The game is a little bit odd with the visuals, but it is also very unique and fun, especially if you like rythm games.
I picked up One Step From Eden a couple months ago and definitely need to play it! It's been on my short list for a while lol. I've heard of BPM but I'm just so bad at everything rhythm related
I'll recommend Invisible, Inc. It's a tactical stealth roguelite, sort of like a roguelite XCOM. It's made by Klei Games, the team currently working on Griftlands.
Really cool video, whose quality is unexpectedly high for such a small channel (and its seems that's the case for the channel itself too). Regarding Isaac, I don't know if you played the DLCs (your footage seems to be from the vanilla rebirth version), which implemented a lot of qol changes, amongst a lot of new content.
Thanks! I did just play vanilla rebirth, and I actually didn't realize the DLC had those QoL changes. I was under the impression they were mostly just more items and monsters, but those QoL changes would make me want to revisit it.
a couple of rouglikes i didn't see on the list which you might wanna check out. just as an fyi i have not played either but i did watch some of both 1st one is a bullet hell rougelike called steredenn a bit older and i didn't really find it enjoyable to watch but one that i did find really fun to watch is one step from eden a combination of card game rouglike like slay the spire but has more of a real time combat system. also a few others that are pretty old but still seems like fun is tower of guns, 60 seconds and finally sword of the starts (though this one is seriously massive) seems similar to void bastards combat wise. in all honesty a lot of the rougelikes i find are from a channel called rhapsody and he does a lot of different ones
I've played a lot of those games, but none of those can reach The binding of isaac, the variety of enemies and biomes, boss, items, objective to reach to unlock new items. For me it's just better than all other games i've played. Like hades, once i beated the final boss like 4-5 i dropped it. But it's just my personal view.
For TBOI i suggest you atleast use the item description mod and there are other QoL mods that help you can still unlock items and get achievements with certain un-gameplay changing mods ive almost 100% one save file and have 91% achievements on steam... until repentance comes out
@@InsertReviews Also, the game has so much more than what you described it as in the video. There's so much depth in the game it's insane, the synergies, item combos that allow you to literally break the game nad become a god, and you can even make your tear size bigger than your actual screen so it hits everything in the room etc. but it requires time to unlock most items so you can get more synergies and good items, so you can unlock even more stuff. If you have at least 40-50 hours to invest into binding of isaac, it's a great game. The lore and cinematics at the end of the runs are pretty great as well, makes you care about the characters and the religion stuff in the game. For me it's at least 200+ hours of fun. If you want to give it another shot, first thing i would recommend is enabling the extra hud in settings so you can see your characters stats and the items you picked up, without pausing the game and in detail.
I think Hades is pretty fun .. for about ten hours. Then it really starts shining for all the wrong reasons. Elysium and especially Styx are among the worst stages in games like these, capped of by what is THE worst boss fight I had to suffer through in recent times. Shoutout to Dead Cells though, because for me, that game gets the genre so perfectly right it's scary.
Loved the reviews! Played most of them and agree totally. So if this is true and our tastes are similar, I highly recommend Caveblazers, for me it's the title I return to most often after having played more than 100 hours.
Wait a second, in Dungeon of the Endless a pg is the engineer from Team Fortress 2! Btw great video, I'll subscribe and share, you seriously deserve more audience
I was so hyped for risk of rain 2 since the first game is one of my most played favourite games period. The soundtrack by Chris Christodoulou alone is worth playing the game. Unfortunately i lack of skill for risk of rain 2, its too flashy and gets messy quickly. Bummer.

Nice list! I've definitely been wanting to try some of these (like One Step from Eden and Gordian Quest), but I haven't even heard of a lot of them. I'll have to look into more of these. Ziggurat 2 was just released, but it's early access so it has a while to go for the full release.
This is a great video very informative too! though I've recently came back to binding of isaac because of its upcoming huge dlc binding of isaac repentance!
i tried dicey dungeon and it gets boring so fast and feels too easy... :( love the graphics though. kinda disapointed but nice video i enjoyed the others games a lot :)
I know right. I see it so often on my Steam store page but brushed it off as just another roguelite game, until last winter sale when I decided to give it a try. I've already sunk 40h into it since.. SO addictive
He also said the game is highly dependent on RNG, even though EtG is one of the few roguelikes you can actually win with your stock loadout and no upgrades.
Criminally underrated channel for sure. Great voiceover, great editing and informative for someone who's dabbled in the roguelike/lite genre. You definitely deserve more subs
Isaac has always been like this, you had to keep in mind everything that you've picked up. The game doesn't hold your hand at all. It was part of the high skill cap in my opinion. The game is definitely easier now that you have those options, which lets you focus on other parts of the gameplay.
What a channel for the UA-cam algorithm to randomly throw my way.. it must have heard me talking to my friends in discord about my favorite roguelites! Great video dude
Really nice video! Edit: I think you should check out Crypt of the Necrodancer, its somewhat but not very old (came out in 2015), but have been enjoying it Edit 2: If you want something a bit more new, I would suggest Ring of Pain
Thanks! I've heard good things about Crypt of the Necrodancer, but I'm awful at everything rhythm-based so I've avoided it lol. I've never heard of Ring of Pain before but that actually looks right up my alley.
Oh it's published by humble games too. I actually usually check out the indies they publish but missed this. I think I'll pick it up in the winter sale.
@@InsertReviews Ring of Pain is alot of fun, it'll only take you about 5 hours to beat a run of it on normal, but it's very interesting, being more of a puzzle than a fighting game. Not a huge amount of depth, but a standard run will only take you 15-30 minutes, so it's REALLY good to just pick up and put down, which I think is one of it's greatest strengths.
I highly suggest trying out “Children of Morta” for a dungeon crawling rogue lite with quite a few different characters to play as. It also has an actual story with lot of voice acting.
I got the game back in 2018 put in like 5 hours and didn't touch it. Beginning of 2020 I decided to do a run for the hell of it and I played it 28 hours that week and kept up that amount of gameplay for like a month and a half, while also going to school. Its a fun game but if you aren't good at it, it isn't fun imo.
That feels like an... unfair review of Isaac. A good part of the difficulty is only being able to shoot in the 4 cardinal directions. There are a few items that allow you to shoot anywhere, but they come with their own downsides. I also think that the unknown nature of the items is fun, as it adds another layer of skill; learning what they all do and how they synergize with each other to make powerful combos (such as ludo + brimstone). Plus, even if that’s not your thing, the top mod in the workshop is a mod that tells you what every item does by standing next to it. Granted, to use the workshop instead of third-party loaders you need the afterbirth DLC, but it’s COMPLETELY worth it for the amount of content it adds.
Isaac also shines the more you unlock characters and items. It's also a great time to get into isaac because of the repentance dlc announcement which is planned to be released Q1 of 2021 in which they claim "The Binding of Isaac: Repentance is so huge, so new and so feature-packed that it makes previous updates look like prequels. There are more features, improvements and new secrets, too many secrets, than most games would include in an official sequel! It's an immense amount of new content to explore, even if you're at 1,000,000%!" so go to the steam store and buy it right now!!
You can also use platinumgod.co.uk to easily find info about any item, you can even search by appearance if you don't know what it's called and are afraid of picking it up in case it's bad. So it's kind of a valid complaint but it also doesn't really make a difference and it can also be fun to experiment without knowing what everything is. The first complaint about shooting controls is absolutely unfair as different shooting would totally change the game (in a bad way imo).
@@deadlymoogle2 non-explicit synergies exist in pretty much every roguelike. He didn't mention synergies in enter the gungeon either, nor did he mention synergies in darkest dungeon
Whenever you say "Classic rougelikes" have started the genre, its more of a modern resurgence. The genre begins in describing games that were similar to UNIX based PC game: Rouge. A newsgroup (email), for players of Rogue (1980), Hack (1982) ever hear the term "hack 'n slash"?, Moria (1983, Tolkien stuff), created and defined the term "rouguelike" and the influence would later lead to things such as Diablo (1997) and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (2005) in between the years. All this comes way before Spelunky (2008) existed. If you read all that history, give a go at Crypt of the Necrodancer, it was unlisted in the video and is a real fun one, play on the beat to reach the stage end, fantastic music. Coin Crypt is a gem in the rough, a deckbuilding style game with lots of characters each having their own ruleset to the game.
I feel like rhythm games appeal to people who like music but don't play instruments. If you do play instruments rhythm games feel extremely tedious often just relying on the simplist of rhythm mechanics as the core gameplay. When you've practiced music to a metronome for countless hours, having that same idea in a game becomes extremely unnatractive.
@@bbbbbbb51 There's a lot more complexity to the game, its a roguelike that forces you to play to a tempo, you can buffer inputs and skip beats, so its not so much about timing or matching inputs as it is the driving force for the game that keeps everything in motion.
I love darkest dungeon so much not only because I love the gameplay, but because of the art and aesthetic. I really enjoy that Mike Mignola eldritch horror aesthetic. Great video!
I feel like Wizard of legend is one of the roguelites that's massively polarizing. I personally love the game, and the skill cap is low enough that I was able to play the co-op with my non-gamer girlfriend, but I can understand how some people wouldn't like it given some of the strange mechanics, and decently high knowledge requirement. Love the whole video though, thanks for exposing me to new rogue lites!
I played about 300h + on this game. The first 20h make you addicted like shit. But after you get used to the Hit stun mechanic: Understanding your basic attacks have a little stun, you can just basic attack through every room wihout getting damaged
In the mean time, if you haven ‘t seen, check out Iratus Lord of the Dead. It’s a shorter/easier DD style game, where you play as the monsters. I honestly found it to be more fun then DD.
Actually really impressed thought i was watching some well known reviewer but seeing your subscriber count you're definitely underrated, nice work on the video
I recommend buying afterbirth+ for the binding of isaac. It adds a lot of content and several quality of life options, such as being able to see your stats as well as what items you have. Either way, great video!

I'd add one thing to the rogue legacy section. Not only is it a classic in the genre, it's actually the game that coined the term roguelite, as other games at the time just called themselves roguelikes.
Bad take on gungeon. The game is not RNG dependent; you can ask anyone who is even half decent at it and they will tell you that it has nothing to do with luck.

Also the genre starter "Rogue" was recently released on steam. For self-interest it could be neat to check out.
The logbook entries are actually really good! I didn't even notice them until a while into playing but it was a nice surprise when I found them
You should try ScourgeBringer, it has some of the smoothest combat I've played in any roguelite.
My two cents to the list:
Curse of the Dead Gods (early access, but definitely worth checking)
Synthetik (once you get into the rhythm, it's great)
Do you.....enjoy violence?
Just got to the wizard of legend section of the game, I played it with my friend as coop man it was so bloody fun
i feel like you've been blessed by the algorithm bro, happy for you, your videos are really well made, not you average sub 1k channel for sure
you should try dark devotion, i'm actually not sure if it fits your kind of game but you should like it a lot
I think my favorite is Counterspy which no one ever seems to mention.. I quite like Hades & Dead Cells too..
Children of morta is very much in this vein and definitely worth a look
I'll recommend Invisible, Inc. It's a tactical stealth roguelite, sort of like a roguelite XCOM. It's made by Klei Games, the team currently working on Griftlands.
Awesome video, hope more of these games come for Ps4/Ps5 :)
Thanks to UA-cam algorithm for recommending this video.. Loving your channel👍🏼
@@InsertReviews also new dlc is out on march 31st i think
a couple of rouglikes i didn't see on the list which you might wanna check out. just as an fyi i have not played either but i did watch some of both 1st one is a bullet hell rougelike called steredenn a bit older and i didn't really find it enjoyable to watch but one that i did find really fun to watch is one step from eden a combination of card game rouglike like slay the spire but has more of a real time combat system. also a few others that are pretty old but still seems like fun is tower of guns, 60 seconds and finally sword of the starts (though this one is seriously massive) seems similar to void bastards combat wise. in all honesty a lot of the rougelikes i find are from a channel called rhapsody and he does a lot of different ones
I've played a lot of those games, but none of those can reach The binding of isaac, the variety of enemies and biomes, boss, items, objective to reach to unlock new items. For me it's just better than all other games i've played. Like hades, once i beated the final boss like 4-5 i dropped it. But it's just my personal view.
beautiful review video!
I was hoping to hear your opinion on atomicrops. You should definitely try it out its a great Rouge like
I suggest trying out Hyper Light Drifter. Really fun and beautiful game
I suggest Synthetik to one's who like guns and top-down shooters, underrated game.
Look for red sparkles to find the teleporter on Risk of Rain 2 😁 (blue sparkles on lvl5) :)
Great contet, rly sophisticated, keep going
For TBOI i suggest you atleast use the item description mod and there are other QoL mods that help you can still unlock items and get achievements with certain un-gameplay changing mods ive almost 100% one save file and have 91% achievements on steam... until repentance comes out
Definitely think an item description mod would be good for me if I play a lot more of TBOI since that was a major annoyance for me lol
I can't believe I didn't see a single comment about Star Renegades or Loop Hero
You should check out Heroes of Hammerwatch, I had a lot of fun with that one.
I definitely need to look more into that one! Also love the Gritty pro pic lol
Hey i recommend you to play the following roguelites/like:
Heroes of hammerwatch
Spelunky 2
I think Hades is pretty fun .. for about ten hours. Then it really starts shining for all the wrong reasons. Elysium and especially Styx are among the worst stages in games like these, capped of by what is THE worst boss fight I had to suffer through in recent times.
Shoutout to Dead Cells though, because for me, that game gets the genre so perfectly right it's scary.
Definitely try sword of the stars the pit. One of the greatest I have ever played
Loved the reviews! Played most of them and agree totally. So if this is true and our tastes are similar, I highly recommend Caveblazers, for me it's the title I return to most often after having played more than 100 hours.
Thanks! I'll add Caveblazers to my list, I haven't heard a lot of people talking about that one
Hopfully we will see you reach 1k before the end of the month
They did my boi Isaac dirty ( item synergies is the main pitch )
Wait a second, in Dungeon of the Endless a pg is the engineer from Team Fortress 2! Btw great video, I'll subscribe and share, you seriously deserve more audience
Yeah that have a couple TF2 characters as a free update which is funny, and thanks, appreciate it!
Really sad this list is missing two key home runs. Streets of Rogue and Synthetik. Both would be up there in this list
Admit it, Hades is what got us all into this
One step from eden is pretty fun I'd recommend that
please do a part 2
I bet you'd be a big fan of Monolith!
This is a great list! But how could you omit one of the greatest, Rad?
I was so hyped for risk of rain 2 since the first game is one of my most played favourite games period. The soundtrack by Chris Christodoulou alone is worth playing the game. Unfortunately i lack of skill for risk of rain 2, its too flashy and gets messy quickly. Bummer.
You gotta play Noita, it takes a bit to get into but it's really fun
rogue legacy, binding of isaac are great ... I also reccomend NOITA , and new ones like BPM
You should try out Risk of Rain 1 (the original) - it is super fun, and like #2, it has a great soundtrack.
I've heard good things about the first risk of rain, so I definitely plan to check it out (eventually lol)
@@InsertReviews It's on Switch as well as PC - I have copies on both platforms, but I like it on Switch for travel.
Simple the best channel on UA-cam. Wish you lot more subs.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Other games you may want to try
So many I'll keep the big one in the top
Bloody Rally Show - Top down racing game with GUNS and BLOOD - Blood fule your car
Gordian Quest - Card game like Slay the Spire but team based
Dungeons of Dredmor - First RL on steam
Dream Quest - Look like SHIT, play like a DREAM
Invisible, Inc. - Stealth Turn Based stratgy
Heart&Slash - Megaman Legends-Like
20xx - Megaman X Like
One Step From Eden - Megaman Battel Network Like
Mmmmmmmmmm I see a pattern here
Diehard Dungeon - a Zelda Like, not great but was good for it time
Risk of Rain - The first game is great, it was 2D game like Megaman
Hero Siege - Simple Arena Shooter, I loved it a lot back in the day, I need to play it again they add so many new DLCs
One Way Heroics - Is weird Runner JRPG ... it weird, there a One Way Heroics 2 but never played it
Tower of Guns - Good FPS
Ziggurat 2 ! - I didn't played it yet I think it relesed 2 weeks ago
Hand of Fate 1+2 - Batman: Arkham Asylum Combat sysatem
Siralim 2 - Pokemon Horror Like!
A Robot Named Fight! - MetroidVania RL
I have so much more I tried to make as Short as I can, Still let so many other games away
Pixel Dungeon is a nice lil pocket roguelike
no Crypt of the Necrodancer on this list makes me sad :(
I'm surprised you haven't played gunfire reborn yet
Rogue Legacy is a cool game, but it's waay too difficult, it's the hardest rogue like I ever played probably
i tried dicey dungeon and it gets boring so fast and feels too easy... :( love the graphics though. kinda disapointed but nice video i enjoyed the others games a lot :)
Thanks! Yeah I think Dicey Dungeons is really great but doesn't have quite the longevity as some other games.
Good video, I recommend Iratus: Lord of the Dead
Risk of rain 2 is so good. I slept so much on it, wasn’t sur rig I would like it but holy shit it sucked me in
Yeah I've put 130 hours into it and still go back. The hope for a god run where the game breaks itself always keeps me wanting to play again
RoR was such a fun game, that the moment RoR2 dropped in EA, I snatched it up at full price.
I know right. I see it so often on my Steam store page but brushed it off as just another roguelite game, until last winter sale when I decided to give it a try. I've already sunk 40h into it since.. SO addictive
Bought it on sale on psn 8 pounds, amazing 10/10
I bought it on ps4 and on steam
"Enter the Gungeon is kinda slow." Tonic the Sledgedog wants a word with you.
I know right, it really isn't as fast as Nuclear Throne, but there still is a challenge in rooms outside of Bosses, specially in the later floors
@@lagc5103 it also gets faster after reaching a certain point
This dude probably gets killed by the rat!
He also said the game is highly dependent on RNG, even though EtG is one of the few roguelikes you can actually win with your stock loadout and no upgrades.
I had a stroke trying to comprehend Tonic the Sledgedog
Who else is grateful when you just click the video and then there's a timestamp and game name on desc
I just watched the entire vid because of that
Criminally underrated channel for sure. Great voiceover, great editing and informative for someone who's dabbled in the roguelike/lite genre. You definitely deserve more subs
Thanks man, appreciate hearing this, and I'm glad you've enjoyed my videos! We're slowly growing, but it's a process haha
@@InsertReviews It will explode sooner or later mate. Great stuff. I thought you have like 300k subs or something 😄
I suggest checking out Gunfire Reborn! Early access with a borderlands feel
I see "borderlands feel" I click buy. I'll have to check it out
@@incog0956 it’s really good. I’ve got like 30-40 hours and still haven’t beaten it with stupidly op gear.
I would also add BPM here - awesome rhytm rogue-like shooter, but yea - Gunfire Reborn is super awesome
playing the binding of isaac without enabling the hud that tells you the stats and what item you've picked up is pure madness lmao
That came in the expansion or a mod not available on Steam, easy to miss.
Isaac has always been like this, you had to keep in mind everything that you've picked up. The game doesn't hold your hand at all. It was part of the high skill cap in my opinion. The game is definitely easier now that you have those options, which lets you focus on other parts of the gameplay.
he doesn't know the pure awesomeness of all the dlcs
@@Darkenbox Literally, it's been improved so much since base rebirth
Yeah I always recommend just buying all the dlcs on your first play through of Isaac just bite the bullet because it’s worth it
During the entire Spelunky section I was just screaming ”THERE’S A RUN BUTTON”
I was watching the end of the first Spelunky clip and I was like "AAAAH BLACK MARKET"
What a channel for the UA-cam algorithm to randomly throw my way.. it must have heard me talking to my friends in discord about my favorite roguelites! Great video dude
Really nice video!
Edit: I think you should check out Crypt of the Necrodancer, its somewhat but not very old (came out in 2015), but have been enjoying it
Edit 2: If you want something a bit more new, I would suggest Ring of Pain
Thanks! I've heard good things about Crypt of the Necrodancer, but I'm awful at everything rhythm-based so I've avoided it lol. I've never heard of Ring of Pain before but that actually looks right up my alley.
@@InsertReviews ya ring of pain is really good and relatively new, but hasnt made it too mainstream yet
NecroDancer doesn't require any skills with rhythm, but it's a fantasitc game with an incredible OST. Highly recommend it.
I highly suggest trying out “Children of Morta” for a dungeon crawling rogue lite with quite a few different characters to play as. It also has an actual story with lot of voice acting.
Finally, me and the other three COM fans were waiting for someone to mention it.
Yes! I liked this game a lot! Unique and very fun class-based Roguelike
Dude, I was gunna suggest this game as well. I’m playing it for the first time right now and it’s great!!
I was surprised wizards of legends makers didn't make COM
Enter the gungeon is just a must play classic
eh, I've played it but it's not my thing, im not sure why tbh, just for some reason I don't like it
@@nepnep1802 same I'm pretty good at other rogue likes but for gungeon i just find it really hard and not that fun
Binding of issac is better
@@nepnep1802 I like game with sword more than game with gun
The cardinal shooting is a big turn off
Him not even mentioning item synergies in isaac made me upset. That's such a core mechanic of the game, I wonder if he even put time into isaac
Honestly, the artstyle is really great, and I think it's something you can appreciate even if you didn't like the core gamplay
My fave game is Darkest Dungeon. Now That I heard about 2, this is could be the next
In the mean time, if you haven ‘t seen, check out Iratus Lord of the Dead. It’s a shorter/easier DD style game, where you play as the monsters. I honestly found it to be more fun then DD.
@@Vacoona Thanks. I will try it
I can’t wait for DD2
There's a sequel coming out?
Actually really impressed thought i was watching some well known reviewer but seeing your subscriber count you're definitely underrated, nice work on the video
I recommend buying afterbirth+ for the binding of isaac. It adds a lot of content and several quality of life options, such as being able to see your stats as well as what items you have. Either way, great video!

@@JimGodx Lmao thank you for pointing that out. Fixed it
I'd add one thing to the rogue legacy section.
