Every Time I Get Hit, the Roguelike Changes

- Roguelikes are hard. And there’s this weird misconception with roguelikes that you have to play perfect. You watch UA-camrs play them and they talk about taking bad damage, or losing flawlesses. They get frustrated if they have low health or god forbid, lose a run. But the reality is that roguelike games are SUPPOSED to be like that. They’re supposed to be challenging and you’re supposed to lose sometimes and today I’m going to prove it. What if the only way to win a roguelike was to flawless every run? To never get hit? What if every time you got hit, the roguelike changed?

I haven’t been on UA-cam in forever because you know life gets busy. Glad to see you’re doing well!🎉🎉🎉
Pixel Dungeon when? it's on phone for free but also on steam
I hate to say this... but I love to say this um actually the term is roguelite because a roguelike is a term used for turn based games in which if you die you must restart from the beginning however these games aren't turn based!!! Lol doesn't even matter if you say rogue lite it sounds just like rogue like there really isn't a difference in how the 2 words are used (tho they do mean different things and technically roguelite is correct).
I'd like to imagine tyler just had 10 windows open and closed one out each time he got hit
10 windows or windows 10?
@@Solrex_the_Sun_King both
@@Solrex_the_Sun_King 10 tabs
How did he actually do it?
Yah not a fan of fake reactions. The hit sound was believable
As a designer, we learn about how older games expected you to die around X number of times before progressing, but in modern post arcade design, health serves more as “amount of mistakes you can make”. So it’s ok if you get hit, that’s why you get health!
well probably because old games follow the mentality of you die a lot and each time you die you pay money to play again. So it make sense them to make you die a lot XD
Also kind of same mentality with free to play games. Now they create problems and sell solutions. That even bleed to games you pay to own as well.
Modern Rogue Likes/Lites are pretty much like the Arcade Games of Old.
(Just minus the Quarter Munching)
@@Mekboy_ComputerMonster slap tboi in a cabinet, and monetize each run, I would 100 percent stand there all day playin

With brutal orchestra, you're simultaneously good as hell, but also miss really small things. Kinda love it. You do things I didn't think would work half of the time .
It’s why I love watching Tyler, he doesn’t get caught up in all the small details and still finds ways to have fun
yeah would have loved to see an attempted fennec no dammage brutal orchestra run or something like that
His speech patterns are so much like 2017 Northernlion it's unreal

Fantastic video and an important message. It's not even just players getting wrong impressions from these flawless (or just way too good for an average impression) videos btw. I've seen quite a few developers base changes (e.g. balancing) on them, cause they're often just the most visible and analyzable feedback they're getting. But they're massively distorted towards high-tier "I play games like this all day" skill levels. Something to keep in mind for sure!
I was ready for a 12 hour video of Tyler trying to flawless a rougelike until he eventually collapses from exhaustion
I love this. Some roguelikes that aren't in the video that I think would be possible to no-hit: Crypt of the Necrodancer, Noita, Hades, Magicite, Risk of Rain, Risk of Rain 2, Super Amazing Wagon Adventure.
Some that I don't think are possible at all but would be interesting anyway: Nova Drift, Loop Hero, Sword of the Stars: The Pit.
No shot you can no-hit RoR1 without Glass. Crypt has a built-in character that requires a no-hit run with dagger only, so very doable there. Noita and RoR2 are IMO about the same difficulty; Noita will eventually randomly chip you with a stray bullet or DoT stain, RoR2 has Lesser Wisps. Hades is a nice mix between 'super hard' and 'reasonably doable without relying on RNG/dodging comically under-telegraphed minor damage'.
@@awesomefuzz4008 RoR1 and 2 are *possible.* I didn't say they were reasonably doable, just possible. Noita hitless runs have been done and you get a unique reward for it even.
RoR1 also has an achievement for getting past the 3rd teleporter without getting hit.
also another one is Skul the Hero Slayer, but ur gonna need to dash a lot
@@awesomefuzz4008 You could probably do RoR2 with Mercenary with enough practice. There's a person who does every single Prismatic Trial as default Mercenary without taking hits, basically serving as sort of proof of "You can get Ethereal at any time, you don't have to wait for a specific trial"
Prismatic is only two stages, playing a full run is definitely much different. You'd need to be good at looting efficiently and get good enough damage items to carry you through later stages.
Tainted Eden seems to break into Olexa's computer so now it's not just them rerolling upon taking damage, the entire game rerolls into a different one

What a cool way to showcase these games! While it wasn’t the point of this video, it would be cool to see another showcase like this, especially since some of the deckbuilding roguelikes have unavoidable damage.
Ackshually, it is possible to take no damage on Dicey Dungeons, you just have to be up against enemies that don't guarantee damage (like Magician/Space Marine), then get lucky with your drops and get shields ASAP 🤓
How’s life
This is unhinged.
In the best way possible
I love this concept and would like to see you do more things like this
I have never seen somebody do this especially being new to watching him it gave me some good games to play that I one have not given a chance or two just never heard of
Chaotic, smoothly edited, intense, yet lighthearted. A great business card for what your channel has to present!
The smoothness of switching contexts is amazing. Had to actually take notes to remember checking out few gems on Steam. Love your energy!
Such a cool idea, keep it up! Your work ethic/perseverance to get to this point is inspiring, I hope the channel keeps growing :)
I like how the intro conversation makes it sound like rougelikes are almost Sisyphisian to play
This was a great idea, kudos to you, would love to see more things like this where you work in more rules and concepts and it becoming a full fledged gamemode
Idea: What if you did another video/made this into a miniseries where you select 3-4 random rougelikes, and whenever you get hit move down the list. When you get hit on the last game, go back to the first, but keep the progress you made on each game. The challenge would end when you beat one of the games.
Loved the video, and would love to see more of this!
Cool video, and I agree with the philosophy around roguelikes.
If there's one roguelike (with health) I could see myself flawless-ing, it's probably Noita. It would take a *lot* of concentrated effort (and runs) to do so, though.
this video was incredibly fun, id love to see another one with different games :)
Add Risk of Rain and Luck Be a Landlord next time. Or take the Pyramid concept and draft 10 random games from it.

@somerandomkidplaysvideogames yeah I saw it as soon as I said that.
This is such a cool video concept and I think you did an amazing job at executing it!
That’s such a cool concept ! I too am a huge fan of roguelikes and would love to attempt that challenge myself !
loved the idea of this :) for forward escape the fold i would actually make the rule that you can't lose hp, shields don't count as damage, that way you have a decent chance...
this is the kind of nonsense video I adore. been really loving the content youve been putting out
these videos should be recommended more often. awesome quality and commentating
This was a great video, even though a lot of people are saying that they want to see this again with different games I think I'd want it to see the same games at some point, you might get further or not as far in some of them because of the nature of roguelikes
This is a phenomenal series. I need to do this myself. I was surprised when I saw certain games pop-up. I was like, "Nobody's heard of that game, what?! No way!!"
Also very fitting you got further in Spelunky 1 than 2, and further in 2 than OG.
Really interesting video, saw some games i've never even heard of. Awesome video man
rogué likes for me embody the indomitable nature of the human spirit, it’s the finding pleasure in the trying again with the thought of “maybe next time i’ll do better”. your rollercoaster analogy was great but i think an even better is that of the myth of sisyphus. sometimes you just gotta imagine he was happy pushing the rock up for all eternity
Charming little showcase, will stay and watch some more vids.
Cool concept for a video! Wish there was some mod that would actually allow this to be seamless, but I'm pretty sure thats basically impossible. Very creative, keep up the good work gamer!
This was a fun video! would love more content like this :D
I just found your channel!! I just wanna say I love the chill vibes and cool games u find
Just watch half of this when I make the comment. But this video is soooo good. You have outsone yourself Tyler!! Well done
This was a really great video. The almost philosopher video essay-lite style was a great time to listen to

This man is a villain.
There's some Northernlion influence to the cadence in this man's speech. Subbed and pogged.

The amount of games fron this video I added to my wishlist is insane. Thank you
This video is absolutely amazing what a great concept and lovely comment.
Have to say I thought you were going for La Mulana after Spelunky Classic :)
This was super interesting! Would love to see more manaspark
that was a really good video i would totally watch a part 2
The challenge of rouge-likes is why I love them, I feel an embodiment of my childhood games, with the unrelenting difficulty and the fun characters, it allows me to just sit down and relive the difficulty of my childhood games.
A really great and creative video, thank you.
I'm learning to make video games and want my first game to be a roguelike bullet hell(I know original right?) This video felt more like product research than a break lol.
I love this video and it is so dead on, thank you!
what a fuego idea, I'm one of the dudes you see in the statistics at beginning of videos "70% of you aren't subscribed" now I'm one of the subbed ones.
the way this guy talks is so soothing. He is just so calm and chill as he rolls through these incredibly frustrating games hahah.
Much love!
Loved this...... Definitely do more stuff like this
This is the best channel trailer that isn't a channel trailer I've ever seen
This is such an interesting concept for a video.
It was you, wanderbot, and retromation that got me into rougelikes and I love you all for it. I'm still kinda bad but I've been getting better! That's what rougelikes are about, trying till you get better and using what you learned to get farther and farther. I don't think I ever would have played one if it weren't for you guys.
Same! I started with Tyler, Reto and Wander and then I eventually started watching Vee and Rhaps
Northernlion for me
Man went full Bennett Foddy mode at the beginning. Great content
Dude, you're the reason i keep recommending new to me rougelikes to my buddies.
The Slay The Spire segment perfectly describes the average STS experience.
That intro got to me, i just spent 3 hours playing isaac & getting good runs just to lose every single one, i was quite frustrated. I get on youtube, see this, and im smiling within 2 minutes
When he said this 6:16
I thought of "If she leaves you for another, there is always her mother"
Hoping to see more of this but this seems like it was a pain to edit so understandable if we don’t
Fantastic segment and approach to rogies. Can't speak for others, but I definitely enjoy watching content more if getting hit is taken well. Blazing Beaks f.e. is downright boring without health mgm. especially due to the secret room mechanic. Now how about Bombslingers, Has Been Heroes and Death Road to Canada for the next attempt?;o) Would love this to become a new steady installment like the wheel maybe switching after each level or certain amount of points? And could it work competitively with a guest like Isaac mirror runs? Cheers!
love this concept, it is really wholesome
The voice editing was really good in this episode!
16:18 that was a Northernlion noise right there.
You have a new subscriber from me sir time to go binge your stuff
Hey olexa I haven’t seen the video past the first three seconds, but you totally should’ve played the tainted lost when you played issac!!
This is because they can only take one hit and the purpose of the challenge was also to not get hit. It would have worked very well with the theme because you can only get hit once.
Hades, Risk of Rain, Dead Cells, and Vampire Survivors are all games you should try this challenge with
I'd love to end up getting a flawless run on Wizard Of Legend. It's a favorite for me, as along with items your move set itself is part of the randomness. And if you're skilled enough, you could take a win without a single item pickup, nothing but the gear you chose to start with. Whenever I get hit it always feels like it was something I did wrong, and getting that in a roguelike is an art in itself. Also the final boss hits you with the UltraKill v2 style "I'm you but better" and shmooves on you.
love the vid!
I’ve had two flawless slay the spire runs. One with Ironclad where I had a bunch of double armor cards. Ended up with literally thousands of armor while fighting the heart. The other was an ice run with the defect. I had super high focus and channeled so much ice that I’d have >60 block each turn. And I got the calipers artifact which makes block degrade by 15 every turn instead of all of it. Not as good as my Ironheart build (especially because I didn’t have body slams and calipers aren’t as good as barricade) but it works
If its light outside everyone sees floaters in his eye, or so ive been told. Havent actually noticed that in a long time, mostly in my childhood.
That was a great watch! Next time do deaf cells!
A game I'd feel confident having a flawless run would be vampire survivors though it really depends what limitation I have. Also depends how you define flawless. Like, into the breach is pretty reasonable to flawless if you define it as not losing civilian but very hard (or often impossible) if nothing can take damage.
Or a game like invisible inc. is pretty much expecting you to not lose anyone in your run (cause if you do it goes downhill pretty quickly).
God damn this tittle is the one that I know thinking of based on this week of my life that led to this comment.
The having to do all perfect and prioritizing being high all the time over my own social and work life is stressing af fr nojoke but like kinda liking the run
But instead of hit I read high
I recommend this reallybgood rougelike called "a robot named fight" its a roguelike metroidvania and its done so well that it feels like a human design every little bit of it.
For me it's def spelunky, I actually think you are goated at it, your plays are sometimes a little questionable but judt like taking casey in a no-damage run, I LIKE the risk taking
Also, could you do some more videos on that pixelated archer game thst you did a long time ago? That seems pretty cool, would like to see more of it
I think it’s considered a rougelite if you have some kind of permanent upgrade you can buy to make future runs slightly easier? I personally prefer those kinds of games as it makes losing over and over again more bearable as I have something I can work towards, however small, with each failed attempt. Not saying rougelikes don’t have their place, or that ones with unlocks that just expand the item pool can’t be fun sometimes, I just personally prefer something a bit more concrete. Great video though!
As a fan of rogue-like games, i loved your video, continue like that ^^
I love how the chapters in the progress bar let us know when you're about to screw up hahaha
This was surprisingly entertaining
Really cool vid!!!
I need a list of all the games you played in order, I NEED to try them all, they all look so fun and interesting

Amazing video for real ❤
Watching thtat nuclear throne run physically hurt
Nice video!
As someone who loves nuclear throne, I have to say it has to be one of the most brutal games I’ve ever played
and that’s why we love it ❤
There are two principles that are important to a lot of games and stories:
Making stakes high gives them value.
Challenge gives victory meaning.
As for new games I suggest Inscription Kaycee's Mod, Wizard of Legend and Hades. All are pretty much impossible to do hitless so you should be able to fit all 3 in.
Next time id love to see some traditional roguelikes likes Adom, Nethack, Brogue, Cataclysm, Cogmind and Tome, maybe URW too ^^
This is really cool!
Top video really enjoyed this
didn't realize we had the same name. "you know what tyler" COMPLETELY caught me off guard 😂
This is a really cool thing you did
I like it. Good video.
I think the argument that repeating attempts or runs in roguelike/lite games is boring or painful intentionally skips a very important part of the design philosophy, which is the concept of failing forward. In the best of these games, a huge part of the story is communicated through the ways the game world or characters change as they succeed or fail and repeat attempts. You're not just expected to fail, you're intended to - it's often critical to the game's narrative. In fact, I can think of several games where if you somehow were to never fail, you would be unable to progress some part of the game.
I mean, I totally understand if people don't find that appealing, everybody is allowed to have their own taste. And I have definitely felt frustrated if I'm just not able to get a win for many attempts in a row - and if you're playing a game where tests of reaction speed or coordination are key abs those aren't your strong suit, yeah I get how you might just be turned off if the genre entirely.
Eden D-Side is looking crazy
ngl, i was fully expecting you walk down into the mouth door in BOI as a bit lmao
Lmao I thought about it
At the beginning, it makes sense, but imagine you get junken in the Gungeon And then you die and remember you have a one percent chance of getting him if you already got them once in your entire play through swell, imagine how frustrated I was when I got ammo condo and I was the worst character for him and I had a tier 3 junken
yo this video was fye have u played noita or wizards of legend?
Cool video. Also, didn't you no hit that one Tiny Rogues run? (my memory is biased to remember that one of course) :p
Lol I did. That’s extremely true
SORRY TO BE WRITING A WHOLE-ASS ESSAY IN YOUR COMMENTS BUT YOU SAID SOME THINGS THAT MADE ME THINK
I think to get through a tough roguelike you have to be confident in a couple of things
1. I enjoy the core gameplay and would like to beat the game
2. As long as I continue to enjoy the core gameplay I can persevere.
3. As long as I can persevere I am progressing, even if said progress is not linear or apparent to me.
4. As long as I am progressing, I cannot be set back, dying can only bring me closer to beating the game. Even if I didn't learn much from that death, I am still getting closer to the day that I beat the game (That's how time works, it passes.)
5. If I'm not actually being set back by death, then there is no reason to feel frustration. Why would you be mad that you are closer to your goal?
The only way to "lose" in a roguelike (and at your life goals, in general) is to get bored or frustrated.
If you get too bored, you won't be able to make yourself continue.
"Why am I doing instead of not doing?"
If you get too frustrated, you'll convince yourself that your goal could never be reached in the first place, and you'll prove yourself correct.
"Why am I trying instead of not trying?"
I should say that there's no shame in getting bored or frustrated with something, there will be something else to do or try. You will die long before you run out of things to do/try. Even if you fail again and again to achieve your goals, you are still getting closer to the day that you do achieve a goal (That's how time works, it passes).
This means that simply choosing to keep living and to keep doing means that you are making progress, even if you feel like you are in a rut, like you're wasting time/effort. Your progress isn't going to be linear or apparent.
I think this is the appeal of roguelikes, they show you that you can win by failing over and over again, just like in real life.
Brilliant video
I've zero hit completed a run in Gungeon, only to Dragun though. Wasn't able to pull through in Bullet Hell, and Lich got me that run lmao. Favorite Rougelike by far. Really want them to make another. The variety of weapons, items, and most importantly, synergies, make that game top tier in genre for me.
