Hi, obnoxious history student here. Just wanted to say that this looks absolutely exceptional the only alteration I would suggest is that since Dresden was targeted because of it’s railway network it would make sense if the fires were more concentrated around the railways and their stations. Again though, absolutely beautiful work I’m definitely subscribing after this.
You're spot on; unfortunately this city scape is actually of Cologne, not Dresden, as we couldn't find a high enough resolution image of Dresden for this scale. We tried to replicate the best we could the patterns of the targets though in terms of areas with large buildings etc.
With something like this, the results have to be better than the CG alternative and this absolutely was. Awesome technique, great content. Subbed instantly.
I respectuflly disagree, you can do this very well in cg but it would be extremely time consuming. However this method not only is wayyyy less time consuming but also has the added benift of being accessible and anyone can do it! :)
Very True but you also have to take into account render times, volumetric smoke would take extremely long to render even on fast computer, but yes if you were smart about it you could just used composition to add the smoke after you rendered the scene
I thought that it would be a bunch of people making a fully CGI scene, but this just blew my mind and truly shows that practical effects are by far the best way of filmmaking.
@@InCameraTV it’s pretty unreal. It gives me hope for stuff like this if I ever have to cheat an aerial shot because I always try to slide the cam and sometimes that doesn’t actually matter. Thank you for breaking me of this.
JP has such an incredible eye for not only details but being able to execute the craziest stuff. It's hard to beat the actual Bomber video but this one went from printed paper to a bombed out city in like 5min!
Your attention to detail is commendable. your crew has way to much fun when they achieve the results your looking fore , I'm shure as a result of many hours of experimentation. This project is near to my heart but i am fascinated to see the processes in the development of this most realistic film Thank you foe showing your work. Ontario Canada .
As someone who is a creative/artist in a different field, this video doesn't have any practical value in terms of technique etc but it does give me an invaluable feeling of inspiration. Watching your videos these past few months have helped give me back the joy I used to have for creation. I do also find the video's subjects incredibly interesting and your presentation style instantly likeable. Thanks for all the effort you guys obviously put in to the channel.
Citizen Kane used this effect back in the 40s. Since they couldn't afford hundreds of extras they had a photo of a crowd, cut around their heads and moved lights around them to make it look like the heads were moving. Its so cool to this technique still used today, just goes to show you, computers will never replace a good old fashion Leonardo da vinci paint brush
Guys, this is crazy. It's so simple (as you say, it's just paper and a little bit of light), and so complicated in the same time, I really love your work. The result is impressive. Thank you.
If you guys were to use LCD TVS playing videos of fire patterns, or moving red/orange/yellow imaging your fires/lights would be animated...Further selling the affect. A cheaper solution would be to use your LEDs but then moving some sort of patterned paper over them (Between the light and the map) or blowing your fog underneath the map. Just some spitballing for future projects. Love the channel!
This is pretty interesting to illustrate the impermanence of things. The people who burned in the city might have felt like it was hell. The worst experience of their lives. 70+ years later, it would become a artwork film set.
Incredible work and I think looks even better than the effects that we're done in the height of the original practical effects era of the 1980s you guys have the top filmmaking channel on UA-cam
Wow thanks so much we really appreciate it. This was our largest scale and most time consuming project yet so it's great to see all the support so far! There's so many amazing filmmaking channels on youtube, so your comment is extremely flattering, thank you!
WOW! I have had an interest in the bombing of Dresden ever since I read _Slaughterhouse-Five_ as a kid. I actually deep-dived and learned everything I could about it. There was a time I could have told you exactly how much of each kind of ordnance was dropped from each wave throughout that night, what the ambient temperature was, how many Lancs were in each squadron, etc. I mean it. I was obsessed. I even outlined a script about it that would follow a German family throughout the night as they tried to avoid getting killed.
Might make a good book ? We need to remember the past so we can hold our Politicians in check if they start to get too radical . Unfortunately , these lessons don't work in Russia or Iran . Ontario Canada .
I think my favorite part is JP's little search light servo rig and that accidental ambient/flare pass. Those two things really tie it all together & give it some much needed life.
It's incredible what you can do with pretty much practical elements; and a lot of work and dedication of course. I'm impressed with every single project you guys been sharing with us, can't wait to see the final work on this one!
great shot, I love how it warps the passing of time because on the ground nothing moves. It's an abstract representation of the horrid destruction of war: a larger than life presentation. Not sure if that was the intension or it just came out that way, but I love it!
You need way more subscribers. I'm not a cinematographer or anything near this but I love this video's so much. To see how something comes to existence is so satisfying to watch
Wow thanks so much! There's something extremely rewarding about seeing sheets of paper, plush toy stuffing and LED lights turn into a shot for a movie! Great to have you on board though my friend
@@TheEplestugas Yes I go that too, did a reverse image search. I mean it doesn't really matter for the effect, great nonetheless. But it's funny, especially because it's so far away :D
Thank you guys. Love this project as it involves one of my passion, the history of Bomber Command in WWII However can I comment on some elements. Love how you built the ground plane with spot fires and bigger conflagrations. I agree about the searchlights, but having one sweep across the lens would be an opportunity of a massive spike in contrast. What I think is lacking is the random but quite frequent flashes of ‘cookies’ exploding on the ground. Looking at original footage of raids, which I am sure you have also viewed, these cookie flashes have a characteristic pulse of bright yellow light then fades over a second or so through orange. You might think this is too literal, but I think it is an integral part of the true visual effect. Also flak bursts possibly represented by very short ambient flashes, and would be backed up with sound. This flak would also leave traces at or around the aircraft levels, so giving the opportunity of having some stationary traces of smoke moving under the viewer. My biggest problem with your ‘final’ run is the relation of ground to aircraft. I presume you panned the camera over the ground to give the impression of movement. Is the viewpoint from a Lancaster or a much slower moving craft. Why then are the Lancasters going so much quicker. And the density of aircraft is completely unrealistic. No form of ‘formation’ could be flown at night, and often the aircraft might be flying on slightly differing headings. And differing heights. I am sure you are aware of target indicator flares visible cascading from a set height to the ground, but I think this would be unreasonable to comment about. Fantastic piece. Thank you so much for showing your thinking and the technical side, and an insight into the levels you build and and your post production.
You folks seem to outdo yourselves with every passing episode. This channel better blow up soon! We need more inspiration and informative videos for filmmakers and lovers of practical effects. This is like what Indy Mogul’s Backyard FX could have been, had it continued to evolve. The footage reminds me of last year’s California wildfires. Just absolutely haunting. Brilliant work as always!
