@@aus_liam444 I made a suggestion (a hack) for making simple base rocks using plaster and aluminum foil. Apparently this was WAY out of line and I am an idiot for even thinking such a thing. Great community.
This channel is such a godsend, I absolutely love it. Great advice on how to produce all these fantastic, old-school practical effects from an era of filmmaking that is sadly fading. As a fan of that era, and as a filmmaker who is always seeking to learn more techniques, I can't thank you guys enough for providing content like this!
I love the old school techniques but its so easy to do this kind of thing in CG now. Even with CG it still needs cinematic knowledge to make these shots work.
A lot of people on channels with similar themes to this one talk about CG as though we're still living in 1986. CG is absolutely PHENOMENAL at so many things that practical effects cannot possibly hope to recreate. To say that practical is 'so much better than CG' is just rubbish. Yes, practical is much, much better than terrible CG, but that goes both ways. The guys from InCamera have spoken very positively about CG in some of their other videos so this comment is not intended as a dig at them in any way!! Practical is obviously a big thing for them, but they are certainly living in the 21st Century :-) And yes, you still need to have a bit of a brain on you to make this stuff work, CG or not.
The dry for wet technique is good to know. I'm so shocked that this channel hasn't blown up so much info that is relevant to a filmmaker, Photographer, Miniature maker who is also a youtube who needs to get a video for their DIYs. #film, #miniature, #praticaleffects, #photography, #specialfx, #fx Thanks
This was amazing! Can't wait for the rest of the episodes. When the sets are real, your mind accepts the dangers as real which is why the suspense just isn't the same with CGI. Congrats to the InCamera crew on the best underwater FXs in recent years.
Now that's a compliment, thanks Stephen! And we completely agree, your mind knows when something is real or not; that's what makes practical effects so magic!
So cool how you only need to dress the miniature set for camera to make it look good. Don't really have to worry about how it looks from other angles. Really helps save time and resources. Really cool.
One of the best lessons you can learn when filmmaking, always dress to camera! Similar to the Psycho house episode where only the sides facing camera were painted and weathered!
I love how your videos are also very helpful to folks who only work with virtual cameras and lights in various 3D applications. The rules still apply. ;)
We love and Film with In-Camera Special Effects, Models and Miniatures, and every technique from over a century of Cinema at DreamFactory Entertainment and Imagination Workshop Studio.
I did a similar effect. I took a $7 kids swimming pool, filled it with water, placed dollar store black foam board half way around and then shot the entire pool full of spray fog. Then I pulled a weathered model boat across the pool via fishing line. The effect was pretty cool. Smoke definitely does make the difference. I may have to try some of these techniques. Fantastic video!
I have to echo Daniel Broadway. It's huge that you skillfully teach the skills involved. However, you also spell out where we can "cut corners" to save time, money and resources. The concept of "dressing to the camera" is a game changer. It's a simple idea, but clearly rooted in experience. Thanks for this!
Apparently for filming "The Abyss" the dry-for-wet mas made consistent by using a light-meter and a light and aiming for the same light-value when "smoking up" for each shot. I thought that was pretty clever.
Great video guys. I don't understand how your channel is still so criminally under-subscribed. This is my first comment on UA-cam, but I've already given it a like and shared. Thanks for your hard work, your content is awesome.
Thank you so much for that Matthew; it really helps us please the holy algorithm! Continued support like yours will hopefully helps us grow more and more!

"Making their way to the depths of the Pacific ocean, in search of the fabled wreckages of the Bermuda Triangle" Yes. By Bermuda. Very much in the Atlantic ocean.
@@InCameraTV OOOOH. Now I'm excited! I've been trying to track down the Bandai model kits for a while now so I could do some camera experiments myself.
Pro tip: Try starting the Bermuda Triangle search in the Atlantic Ocean first, it might not be quite as successful if you search the Pacific :) Love this channel!
Brilliant work guys :) If you had the suspension wires thus from the sub to the boom: \ / rather than | | , then I think the sub wouldn't be so prone to spinning/wobbling around. Just a thought. Amazing results :)
Omg yessssss guys! V excited to have met you all last week for the Fable shoot and to see the cockpit up close 🤩 10/10 for yet again another amazing video!! Can't wait for the next one!
Your Sub Commander is a genius with his non verbal expressions. 😀 Near the start of your episode you mentioned about a focus thingie. That's how technical I am. may I ask what options I have to focus a manual Sirius anamorphic lens that I bought second-hand to mess around with? It will go on a Panasonic GH5 and a smallrigg cage. Your episode are inspiring me to go well beyond my skill level, bank ballance and comfort zone. But its fun playing with new toys.
Amazing, absolutely amazing. Love it! Have you guys tried something like Film Convert to add a little bit of a softer film look to your shots? They're very good as they are, but maybe it would bring out a little bit more of that realistic light rollof, that's inherent to filming with practical models and sets. I have a feeling you guys would film on 35mm if you could. You're using Black Magic Cameras, so it would be no problem to properly simulate film stock.
That's a great shout, we rarely have the time to go that far with the post on these videos, probably should have for this one. You know what they say, a film is never finished, just abandoned 😉
@@InCameraTV Exactly, it's difficult enough to get something completed. Especially on this scale with making-of, tutorials etc. I can run some free tests for you if you want. Would gladly help out artists, that keep the tradition of practical FX alive. Just shoot me a mail with some ungraded stills to the business email on my channel and I see what I can come up with.

So excited to hear you play Squadrons!! 😆 That was the first game I thought of when I saw your gaming chair, I thought “you know what this would be perfect for…”
This technique goes back as far as the 1940s. They used this Dry for Wet technique at ILM on THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (1990) in fact. Only difference is the miniature was twenty feet (20 ft.) long. Bigger the better for believability. Oftentimes 1/6 scale. And photography would often be filmed "Overcranked" at speeds of 240 frames per second and higher even to give the illusion of massive hull of a submarine in the ocean. Basically sell the shot or what we call in the business a "Suspension of Disbelief".
I love that the effect you used to sell that there's a bigger ship out there is basically the same effect that ILM used in The Empire Strikes Back to say, "Hey, remember the big Star Destroyer from the last film? There's a bigger one of those now!"
The Phallic pillars reminds me of the item that Kirk is holding in that episode from season 1, That Are little Girls Made Of. Which I think is funny title.
