To sum it up. If you’re training for long events, or like to be off grid in the mountain for days on end, then go with Garmin. If you’re an average sports enthusiast that goes to the gym 3-5 times a week, run 3-4 times a week, with a sprinkle of trail hikes here and there, then go with apple. Apple Watch UI is really smooth due to its processor, since it’s supposed to be an extension of the iPhone, which is one of the reasons for its short battery life. On the other hand Garmin UI is the complete opposite, it’s there and it works, nothing fancy, which is why its battery life is superior. If you have an iPhone, Mac, iPad, pretty the whole apple lineup, go with the ultra; they “talk” to each other very well. Garmin benefits greatly if your phone has an android OS, speaking from experience. To simplify everything, Garmin makes sport watches that just happen to be “smart watches”, while Apple makes smart watches that just happen to be “sport watches.”
I will describe my experience here, you people can judge me. I was using an Apple watch ultra for my running and strength training for 21k and I was very upset with the confusion of the Apple Watch to force me to use third-party apps to configure my interval runs and consolidate my information at the end of the day. I sold my Apple watch Ultra and move back to Garmin, bought a Forerunner 965. The out-of-the-box experience was excellent, I can connect my account with my trainer app on my iPhone and download my interval runs automatically. Better training status, better battery. I don't care about LTE or phone functions on my wrist. I want my training data being collected and consolidate efficiently.
My exact experience, I'd argue if you take fitness seriously at all then just get a Garmin. I tried moving back to Apple Watch/fitness after being on Garmin since the 305 and it was an expensive mistake.
I had the same experience, but with swimming. On Apple Watch Ultra is impossible to make interval training. Sold my Apple Watch and got back to my Fenix 3 (!!!!)
I will not judge you but I will judge Apple. What you described in nothing special, especially it is "just" running. There is still no roadmap available from Apple in terms of their commitment to more serious semi professional weekend warriors, which I asspire to be one. :)
Did you sell your Garmin because it can’t answer your phone call or reply message? You dumb people bought Apple Watch but expect it to work like a sports watch, yet you never expect Garmin to work like a true smart watch. You fail the watch for being this dumb, the watch didn’t disappoint you and it does what it’s designed for.
Deciding factor #7 in Garmin's favor is their excellent customer service. I've started with Garmin with Forerunner 310 and even then when my wife's Forerunner broke way out of warranty they replaced it for a small fee with a re-certified unit. It just happened to me when my Fenix 6x Saphire broke, almost 3 years since purchase and they are replacing it with a re-certified unit for $150. Those watches are awesome but also pricey and having an option to get a replacement past warranty keeps me as their customer.
Yep, Garmin has replaced watches for me after the warranty has expired as well. Their customer service is top-notch! Apple's customer service, on the other hand, is non-existent. Problems with Apple devices only days after purchase and they were unwilling to help me. Garmin has earned a customer in me!
It's great that they are replacing it for minimal cost but breaking after 3 years is a bit of a concern. If you are spending a lot of money on something, I want it to last longer than 3 years before failing.
YESSSSSSSSSSS. I am using a Fenix 5X Plus since its launch on 2018. I still did not pulled the trigger on the Epix 2. It is quite amount of money. Before my Fenix I had a Forerunner 235 that I gave to a friend of mine right after I've bought the Fenix, and he still using. He had a problem in 2020 where humidity was under the screen. Garmin replaced a 5 years old watch at no cost!!!! Try that with any other company. Then last year the forerunner stopped charging. They replaced again, but with an inexpensive cost of 70 bucks.
I tried the Ultra and moved to the Forerunner 965. Somewhat for map/nav features, but ultimately Garmin is so much better for multisport training integration, sensor support, interval and other workout types, and training and recovery metrics. It will be years before Apple is anywhere close on those things imo.
Yeah I don’t think that is Apple’s priority. Their model is to let the app developers come up with the killer features and meet that fitness demand for the pros, meeting the needs of the majority of people with their basic tracking.
Except that the integrated sleeptracking and heart rate monitoring has pretty bad accuracy compared to the apple watch. So if you want accurate data then you need a chest strap
@@OverEntusiastmine doesn't. Sleep stages are accurate and heart rate accurate compared to a HRM. Each user's experience will be different you can't make sweeping statements based on your own experience.
@@Fozzee.1970 Of course I do not make statements just based on own experiences. I have based them on this youtuber who does a way more in depth test than most tech reviewers. ua-cam.com/video/cNVV1PwwpmY/v-deo.html
Excellent summary and contrast. I think the Apple watch ultra looks to fulfill all the potential of what a smartwatch can be, and has fitness functions, while the Garmin is for competitive athletes or people serious about fitness, and has smartwatch functions. The garmin has many more metrics that track and analyze performance, and Garmin Coach and was a major reason for me to buy Garmin (not to mention the buttons). But the AWU looks much better from a UI perspective and can do a lot more phone things. Both great devices, but for fairly different purposes. The Garmin is probably narrower in its focus on fitness and advanced health/activity tracking. While the AWU is a mini phone.
As a Garmin user, I'm about to switch to AW simply because Garmins are plagued with heart rate sensor inaccuracies. Most Garmins have the issue where it fails to measure heart rate accurately when you start any exercise, often it picks up after 10-15mins and sometimes it never does (happened to me during a race once). This is a total deal breaker for me. I'm also surprised that this is not being mentioned in any videos despite there are many people on the internet having the similar issues
it's not being mentioned because people that buy the epix want it for ultra running, golf, hill climb and other serious activities. this is a watch for people that take sports seriously and not a for heart monitoring lol.
@@rafael6693 I have a FR 955 and other running focused models have the same issue. At this price range all the watches have to be accurate with all their sensors anyway regardless of what sport they are focusing on.
Great comparison. I would add that the Garmin can be operated with real keys vs touch. Not sure if you can do everything on the AW without touch. Touch just doesn't work in water
I have both and wear both all the time - well, not the AWU when I go to sleep. To me, they are totally different kinds of watches. The AWU is an extension of my iPhone and another very useful and compact/mobile endpoint for my Apple ecosystem. For running and other sports activities, there is no comparison: it's the Garmin Epix Pro 51. Now, I have no need to take the phone with me on my runs, gym workouts, hikes, or whatever other physical activities. The AWU handles my phone calls, Messages, Apple Music, other general stuff and general Health info and the EP51 handles all the detailed sports and health-related data. They can each do some of what the other is best at, but not nearly as good. I also use the AWU with Stryd on my runs so that I can get another set of running data along with what EP51 is providing. So, to me, they are very complementary and I have two wrists, so why not both? I know that around $2K for both is a lot but is surely a lot less than luxury watches from the likes of Rolex, Omega, and Cartier, etc., a few of which I have and almost never wear except for a few stuffy social events every now and then when I have to wear a suit. I think both are great and love 'em. I have things set up so they don't overlap and each does what they are best at.
@@nazar_ua I wear the AWU on my left wrist and the EP51 on my right. It's not inconvenient or uncomfortable at all. Before I got the EP51, I had the Forerunner 745 and wore it on my right wrist but only for running. Now, I consider EP51 the main watch although the AWU has pretty much replaced my iPhone for any outdoor activities as well as the gym. I don't even take the iPhone out with me when going out on short errands. The AWU has liberated me from having to take the phone wherever I go and that's a good feeling since I can take phone calls, receive and send texts, play my music library through the AirPods Pro 2, and handle a lot of the general phone stuff. I'm also using Siri and dictation a lot more now with the AWU when I didn't do that with the phone. It's so good to not have to have the phone with me all the time.
@@fitdude If you have the budget, I say go for it. I also wondered if I actually *need* to have two watches on me most of the time but, now, I feel it's one of the best tech product decisions I've ever made. Now it feels weird if I don't even have one watch on me. Haha. But, seriously, having the best of both worlds is really great. They complement each other so well.
I have the AW Ultra and the Epix 2 (not Pro) and I completely I agree with your analysis. I use them both, but one is a much better smartwatch and the other a beast of a fitness and sports watch. All of your points reflect exactly how I feel about them. Some people ask me about the differences and now I can point them to your video! Thanks :)
I'm curious, do you only wear the Garmin for training or also the rest of the time? I have an AW and an older Forerunner I'm thinking about upgrading. I have my eyes on the FR 965, but it is expensive and a little much if you don't wear it outside training and the AW does a better job there. Not sure I want to wear two watches.
@@Nyelands that is really a dilemma also for me. I'm currently using both, the Garmin with an extended band so I can use it on my biceps or ankle, but I agree with you that it's not the most practical thing. I really love the AWU capabilities as a smartwatch, but Garmin's analysis wearing it 24/7 is much more insightful. I don't want to lose the data that takes weeks to build like HRV status. It's not an easy decision and I understand your concern. I was even sleeping with both watches, which is crazy because both devices are big. I've decided to stop using the AWU for sleep even though syncing Connect to Apple Health does not transfer sleep stages. I'm sorry I don't have the answer for you. I will continue testing what's more convenient, but for now that's where I am.
@@paolaroblesgil Sounds like we have the same dilemma. I was thinking what I would prefer if I had to chose one or the other. A great smartwatch with so so fitness tracking or a great fitness tracking watch with so so smartwatch functionalities. One thing I love is being able to go to the supermarket right after running, Garmin Pay will work for that. Then we have music and LTE being able to answer to text message or take a call. I use it sometimes, but rarely. It would be nice if you are on a longer run and if you're not going straight home after afterwards, maybe enjoying the sun somewhere and not feeling disconnected and feel like you have to go home to check your phone. At the same time do you really need all the smart functions and notifications or is it really more a stress factor. I don't usually listen to music while running, on rare occasions I do, but then I could bring my phone, or wear two watches. Haha! Sorry for the long message, just thinking out loud.
I’ve just traded my Fenix 7 SS for an AW Ultra 2 and I cannot be more disappointed at the moment, the out of the box experience is just disappointing sadly. I regret it a lot. I mean, great hardware, but if the software and experience is no different from the standard AW… I don’t see the Ultra justified. I’m trying so hard to give it an opportunity but the desire of switching back is there. Great video as always!
I think the biggest difference is that the Garmin Epix Pro's main focus is a sports watch and designed with athletics tracking foremost. The Apples is a media device/extension of your phone that CAN be used as a sports watch.
Being a city guy who walks for exercise, the iWatch is the ticket. Having cellular means I have full connectivity when out and about. That is important to me. In the evening I throw the iWatch on the charger and it's ready in the morning. I don't tend to hand-carry my iPhone around and it basically it sits on my desk at work or on my nightstand.
Good review here, but would also point out that the price difference here is $300 with the Pro’s priced in north of $1k. I mention this also because WorkOutdoors and Athlytic are the two apps that make the AWU very comparable to Garmin for mapping and training readiness and they are both discounted here as having to be bought, extra. The flashlight is a tie here, imo. They both have them and they both work for backups. If anything, Garmins torch is over the top.
I got both. I use both when I go for runs but for everyday tasks I use my ultra all day while I put away my Garmin in a drawer until the next morning when I need to go for a run.
I’m a golfer and cyclist; typically golfers using range finders and cyclists use bike computers (currently neither are Garmin). Wearables devices especially for golf has become more popular (not sure about wearables for cycling). So I too have an Ultra 2 but am thinking about getting an S70.
I have an iPhone (and a Macbook) but I'm more attracted to Garmin due to the fact that I don't need smart features. I use to receive few calls and messages per week, if I'm doing sport I don't want to be disturbed at all, it's a moment only for me so I enjoy the lack of connection. Apple Watch is a good looking smartwatch that makes me think about tech/fashion/nerd/generic fitness etc. Garmin is a solid sport watch device that makes me think about athletes/sport/professional healthy tool etc.
Epix for the win. I came from a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to the Epix Gen 2 Sapphire and for the things I like to do, it is well beyond my expectations of its functionality.
I’m using iPhone and I got Epix pro 51mm. Love the combination. I carry my iPhone everywhere, I like the bigger screen than Apple Watch. I ran Grindstone 100 two weeks ago, headlight dead, the Epix led light was my life saver.
Garmin Epix Pro 100%. If you're into working out or competitive sports, there isn't a competition, :D Garmin Epix Pro is even wearable to dinner as much as it is in the mud. It's also a conversation starter. Whereas the Apple Watch you might get teased for wearing that.
I am a casual runner who runs 12km or 21km daily at night (100-120km weekly), together with doing leg workouts or core workouts in the morning and sometimes I will go for swimming in the pool in the weekends. I had been using Apple Watch for years and currently on the Ultra. I am considering to trying Garmin because I am kinda bored of the iPhone. However I currently don't see any Garmin watch as a good replacement for my Apple Watch. Firstly it is a better phone replacement. It allows me to I travel 1hr+ to other places for my runs without my phone. I hate to bring my phone as I am running as I makes me constantly worry that I am vibrating too much that it damages my phone. (e.g. Camera OIS). With cellular, I can remain contactable and it can auto contact emergency support with fall detection. I can also play live streaming radio or Spotify or Apple Music on the demand without downloading beforehand. With wider support from banks for Apple Pay as compared to Garmin Pay, I can use it to pay to buy my food, drinks and transportation around the city. I need to switch my bank if I am going to use Garmin. Secondly, the ECG function. I understand that it is a gimmick for most ppl. I don't see its importance until when I took the COVID-19 vaccination (This is not a debate on anti vac) and felt a bit weird on my left arm. Took an ECG with my watch and learnt that I am having a lot Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) in my heart rhythm. Good thing I know about it and pause my workout for a month just to be safe. While my PVCs episodes reduced, I still do it time to time to make sure my heart is okay before a run. Thirdly, the software. As this video mentioned, there are just more apps for Apple Watch. My favourite app is a live rain map of my country. Almost all of the weather forecast apps are super inaccurate. There are a number of workout apps and watchOS 10 seems to be integrating third party workout suggestions into their first party workout apps. Apple has pretty decent track record so far for updating their watches. Its 2018 Apple Watch Series 4 is still supported for the upcoming watchOS 10. Also for fitness features, Apple don't seem to be gatekeeping new features from old watches much. At most they are just blocking some new watch faces from some older watches and the locking of GPS before the workout start option. In my use case, I also use Gentle Streak for training readiness but to be honest, I always force myself to stick to my training regimen which isn't that healthy I know. Nevertheless, can someone explain to me how did having a Garmin watch over a Apple or a smartwatch helped made you a better athletic especially if you are just a casual who does not do trail running or extreme sports like me. All I know is that AW Ultra battery still sucks in comparision. AW standard workout app does not have routing support. AW Ultra don't have 24 hours heart rate sensor. Otherwise I feel that the advantages of my AW Ultra still outweigh the advantages of a Garmin in my use case.
the one thing you forgot to mention is that the garmin can be used 100% without the touch screen, like when you are wet from sweat or rain. as a matter of fact you can turn off the touch screen and only use it on maps or none at all in situations where the water would make thje screen unusuable . I honestly love my Fenix 7x , if i need smart features i use my phone which lets be honest , most people carry with them anyways. I have a wrist strap to load my phone on my weist while i run. no need to sacrifice so much for connectivity.
When I'm out running, the least thing I want is to have phone calls and messages coming in on my watch. I just want to run and listen to music. No outside world thanks.
Agree. In addition AW for me is better at sleep analysis, HR, weather and counting activity wo. activating a training, like when shovelling snow, or during a recent move to a new place. I have had both AW and Garmin on the wrist simultaneously for a while, and have chosen AW after finding the Training Today app for training readiness, and recent updates to the Athlytic App. I don’t want a HR strap, and love the freedom with LTE of leaving my iPhone at home on many occasions.
Both Apple Ultra and Garmin Epix Pro are huge rocks. Heavy and thick. I prefer light and slim watches. I hope Garmin releases a watch exactly like Furerunner 965 but with flash light! That could be an instant get for me.
I've been an Apple user my whole life and really enjoy the ECO SYSTEM of compatibility and ease of use. I trail run, mountian bike and play golf. The Ultra 2 was such a GIGANTIC dissapointment. I bought a Garmin S70 for Golf and fitness and could not be happier. Also text messages still come up on the display, and the view of details while working out is amazing on the Garmin. Not to mention the battery life.
Like you I’m a golf and cyclist (e-bike/light road); interested how the S70 handles cycling (do you have a Garmin Edge and if so does your wearable interact with the Edge?)
@@BenjaminRodriguez-dt5gz I am an iphone user & I am in apple echo system.. I have iphnoe 14 pro max, ipad, macbook pro, apple tv & airpods pro2 but only the apple watch I hate.. I use only garmin 165 music & it is perfect to pair with my iphone..
I had a Forerunner 955 for about a year. Got the AW Ultra because I thought it was smoother and nicer and they finally were figuring out sports... (plus running without my phone) then about two months later I got the Epix Pro. Not going back. I have my pretty screen AND my amazing battery life + waaaaaay better performance features (plus my handy flashlight). If I want to call someone, I can do what normal people do - pull out my phone. A running vest means I can bring my phone with me - I don't need a standalone watch anymore!
Good post. If I was a runner I'd imagine I would still bring my phone, even if I wore Apple, because of the camera. I bike a lot and take plenty of pictures.
@@Nyelands Nah honestly. I think I prefer it to be honest. I just try to pack light, but sometimes things come in handy. Hate things in my pockets haha
Great review! I was using the AWU since it was released and really enjoyed it. I did however recently move to the Epix Pro because a mate recommended it and I took the plunge after doing some research. I then went back to try out the iOS10 on the AWU and missed the fact I had to much more fitness data all centralised in one app and I didn’t have to charge it so often. I’m back on the Epix Pro and will prob stay there. 😊
I think the reason one sees so many requests for comparisons is that the market is really fluid. New features are continually being added. The definition of what’s a smart watch is blurring. Ultimately that’s a good thing. Interesting times!
Really helpful boiling things down like that, and man that flashlight, it comes in very, very handy when you least expect it but its there and it works
Looks like your in the BayArea. Great video, theses are the two I’m looking into. I have Apple phone but then I have the Garmin InReach mini. I get tired pulling out my phone on a hike. So far I’m leaning towards the Garmin.
Great review. I’ve had both and they are both great but the Apple Watch is basically a small phone which is great if you use it instead of your phone. If you run with a cellular Apple Watch you’ve basically got a phone on your wrist. You’re connected and you haven’t got a huge phone in your pocket. I settled with a Garmin because I can ride over 100 miles and I can run a bit and I use a Garmin for cycling. If that’s got a problem I have a Garmin on my wrist. The Garmin is a tool for training with a long battery life the Apple Watch is a small extension of a iPhone.
i think my favorite part of this video is how daves brand new 51m Epix Pro looks like it survived navy seal hell week, then did 1 tour of active duty military service, followed up with 2 spartan races, a leadville 100, 14 yards mowed, 2 oil changes and tire rotations, then 2 weeks fire jumping out west to keep wildfires at bay.
One thing I like about Garmin, you can charge it off the wrist with a small powerbank and the cable especially on ultra runs while tracking your gps progress. I have the first gen instinct and the battery life isn’t what it used to be so i do this. Does the AWU have the same capability as well?
Imo cellular connection sounds nice, but the reality is that we almost never go out without a phone, be it for workouts or not. If I want to use a smart device, then I'll just use my phone. Cellular connection and 3rd party apps aren't enough of a reason to give up on like 10x bigger battery life and a much better out of the box fitness features, when you want to buy a fitness watch.
Not comparing apples with apples (no pun). They aren't the same category of watch. All I want from a watch is basic info how far how long heart rate ish I don't prescribe to being too pedantic about exercise data. There was a time but after 35 years of endurance sport I have gone months without a watch I know where I am with heart rate and effort without a watch telling me, I know when I'm recovered don't need watch to tell me and I don't need a map to tell me where I am so I bought an AWU for its convenience of music, Apple Pay and cell interface all of which I find very useful. Its a cell phone lite you can exercise with
For me I had AW then I went to Garmin but now back to AWU because I don’t’ need to carry my phone around. I still have cellular whether I’m on the run or working and since everything I have is in the Apple Ecosystem so it’s just convenient for me to use the AWU. I just run half’s, marathon, and hikes so AWU is pretty much all I need. Honestly at the end, just choose whatever device you like 😊 and Enjoy whatever activity you do!
For me that is mostly hiking and packrafting for exercise, the Garmin was the logical choice. The mapping is just better, especially offline, which I am a lot of the time. You need to figure out your need, and go for it.
What options are there for Apple Watch Ultra like one on Garmin ecosystem, particularly Garmin training calendar where you can add 5k,10 or marathon plans and it displays under Run activity for that day?
I am an apple fan boy and love all the products. I bought the AW ultra when it came out. I just loved it at first and thought this was amazing. My main activity is cycling so I use bike computers for data. I got back into running and that’s where it all changed for me. The data out of the Apple Watch in terms of built in stats is just so poor. How does the Apple Watch not have a health app on AW that you can look at? I decided to buy Epix Pro 51mm and I will never go back as the watch is just amazing and such a better sports watch. Amazing video 👍🏻
I own the AWU and am getting the the epix pro gen 2 because of the mapping. I find with AWU as soon as I lose phone signal, the mapping gets really bad, or just stops working. My friends instinct was still showing us where we where on a backpacking trip, when my AWU stopped showing it. Plus for back country stuff having to charge my watch all the time is no good. I love my AWU though. Its a great smart watch.
Gave the 965 a shot but ended up back on my Ultra. Much like you said Dave, for 99% of people one watch or the other will suffice with a few adjustments. For me, it’s the LTE (on-call nurse who finds it handy to go on a run, but be able to quickly turn around if I’m called in). Yes, I could carry my phone, but prefer the convenience of being a phone call or text away from my wrist. Plus, there’s audible and podcasts which are bonuses. Loved my time with the 965, but ultimately, for me, it’s the Ultra (for now). We’ll see what this fall or the next cycle of watches brings! Always exciting with running tech 👍
I’m an Apple user, went straight for the garmin Epix pro 51mm battery still going after 15 days with 3 to go ( using in screen off mode and gesture when tracking.) track my cycle commute twice per day. GPS set to auto mode. Screen set to 2/3 brightness. Don’t care for phone calls or messaging. My garmin shows me all my other notifications calender reminders etc.. Will probably use the flash light in the darker months. I have sight issues so go for big everything I can easily read the display really bright and colourful. One thing that has surprised me is I tend to use the buttons more than the touch display.
I've used a bunch of different smart watches over the years, i never text/call from my watch, i find it awkward. I use my watch to glance at notifications, track fitness/sleep/steps. I never could quite get to grips with charging a watch daily or on alternative days, its downright frustrating when your watch dies and you realise all that important sleep/step data has been missed. A device with no power is no use, no matter how good it is. For this reason, garmin is just on a whole other planet! A month's battery was alien to me and i initially had anxiety the battery was going to die and i couldn't stop checking, but i have only just got comfortable with the fact that the watch is an absolute battery beast. I really only charge it once every 3 weeks, its so much better than all the other smart watches (for my use case). FYI the watch I use is a Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro, which is like an epix but just has some extra aviation specific features. I can't see myself ever going back to anything with a short 1/2 day battery life.
One huge factor for me is that I've been using Garmin Connect since around 2011 and I have a ton of data with it and I'm not sure that it could be imported into the AW.
I have the fenix 7 and the Apple ultra 2, I like both of the watches, I use footpath on the Apple and it’s really good, you pay 24 dollars a year or 2 monthly. If I was going on multi day hikes I would bring the fenix but if I’m going on just an overnight camp I’ll bring the ultra.
Let’s not forget that the Epix Pro looks so much better than the AWU! It is looks like an Omega or something from a distance. Also the black titanium is better than uncoloured
one of the biggest reasons I prefer the AWU is i love to listen to music and audio books on the run/walk etc. Yeah you can use music on the gamins but youre stuck with having to add it and change it and no audiobooks. I also run when it's insanely hot outside and there have been times that I have had to call for a ride a mile or so from home because I over estimated my ability to finish the run.
When you talk about the AW requiring apps to do certain things "at an additional cost", I think it's important to note that while that's true, there is an upfront cost difference between the two, with the Garmin costing more.
One additional difference that I can think of, and it’s not just limited to these two products being compared, but generally across entire product line, is the fall detection / incident detection feature. In Garmin it works only during a certain type of outdoor activities. While in Apple Watch we have the option to keep it ‘always on’. I would love to see Garmin extend this feature to ‘always on’.
I wish every review covered this. I bought an EPIX (Gen 2) only to learn later it was not a feature as advertised for Mtn Biking activity. Huge missing feature and Garmin lost me to Apple.
I agree, this is one of the killer features of the Ultra, especially when paired with the newer iphones because it will even use satellite signal to automatically message for help if you crash or fall and don't respond. This is huge for me because I hike and run on trails without cel signal every weekend. Pretty sure garmin has a similar feature if you buy their satellite device but I could be wrong about it being automatic in a crash.
It honestly boils down to this one simple concept: the Garmin is a sports watch trying to be a smart watch and the Apple Watch Ultra is a smart watch trying to be a sports watch. Both are consistently making strides to be almost as good as the other, but neither are quite there yet. Comparing one to the other is like comparing apples to oranges. You have to decide what you want the most of: smart watch features or sports watch features. Until they both are as good at being a smart watch and a fitness tracker, you’ll just need to decide on one or the other IMO.
Got an Ultra 2 only for cellular and messaging away from the phone. Also, battery life goes far beyond a general Apple watch. I would never use the Ultra over my Fenix 7X for anything outdoors...
As much as i love my apple watch ultra 2 i really want a epix pro or fenix 7 pro solar sapphire for the battery life and maps and garmin workout metrics im confused on epix pro and fenix 7 pro
They’re basically the same Watch with a different display. The Epix has an AMOLED similar to an Apple Watch which is bright and vibrant. The Fenix has an MIP display which is a bit dull in comparison but it’s better on battery and is always on 100% of the time it also feels a bit more analog.
So Garmin wins the fitness side. What about general smart watch type features? Things like notifications for messages, key apps? Does it tie into Apple Heatlh and Apple Fitness?
It's true that Apple metrics are ''harder'', buried in the Health app. However, the Health App Home Screen can be easily customized with your favorite metrics (I.e. VO2max, Resting HR, HRV, etc.). I Have a Fenix 6 Pro and a AWU2, but regardless of the watch I use, I prefer to view my metrics/data on my phone.
Great review! Helped me a lot. I own a Fenix 6X and was considering to upgrade. But for me the key to upgrade is the cellular connection. So I guess I will have to wait, if Garmin ever brings this feature. BTW was is your Greek tattoo on your arm?
Nice video, but I don’t think the part on the AW being able to do pretty much the same on health and fitness metrics is entirely accurate (yet). Apple’s current HRV implementation for example is pretty much useless for stress and recovery. No third party app can develop good metric based on bad or insufficient data. 😊
Actually the "Training Today" app has a cool workaround for getting better HRV from an apple watch. The equivalent "body battery" i get as a result is just as accurate as garmin - if not more. The apple watch could tell I had covid, the garmin said I was "ready to train hard" when I couldnt get out of bed.
Can someone tell from their experience whether AWU is more reliable when it comes to accuracy. Like sleep and fitness tracking, HR, sleep stages, etc.. is the data more accurate on AWU or Garmin Epix Pro?
Hi there, I have a question about Apple Watch. Is there a way to measure rest time while doing intervals on the track with the Apple Watch ultra (using the action button)? I understand that I can set an interval workout with the workout app, but sometimes I just want to freestyle a workout. Right now when I press the lap button within the stopwatch app, it will only show me the total elapsed time. Is there a way to see how much time has passed since I pressed the lap button so I know when to start my next interval? PS. I do use the work outdoors app and I CANNOT use the action button to start a new lap which I thinks wastes the money that I spent to get that extra button ='(. This is why I specifically asked about the using the action button.
@@ChaseTheSummit I’m a little surprised. 😊 I thought it’d be the epix. 🤷♂️. Trying to decide between these is proving difficult. I have the apple ultra and it’s fine but I just really want to track more and the battery life is a factor. My training runs are split between road and trail and all of my races will be trail. I also swim a few times a week and attend CrossFit classes 2-3 times a week.
Thanks for the good review. If I may say, they are two very different watches, each for its own unique purpose. Unfortunately, 3 days battery life kills the AW entirely.
@@ChaseTheSummit I find all AWU compilations - the ones with actual info in them- very difficult to read, in a point which i don't enjoy the experience. I get the impression that Garmin especially 51mm has larger fonts and larger info in the face screen. Am i wrong? i haven't tested the Epic 51mm.
No one ever really says this; Garmin is a sports watch with some smart features. Apple Watch is a smart watch with very capable fitness/sports features. It all depends what you want.
Sounds like you've got the right tool for the job!
Epix pro is now the ultimate SPORT watch
What about garmin descent mk3i
nuh uh it's the Garmin Marq Gen 2 Athletic Performance Edition
Me too
Yeah I don’t think that is Apple’s priority.
Bought the Garmin as a flashlight with an added bonus of a smart watch
Yes, but every outdoorsman will pick garmin just on battery.
I'm also surprised that this is not being mentioned in any videos despite there are many people on the internet having the similar issues
agree with you, sometimes it showed me heart palpitations up to 150 while walking. Compared with another smart watch and the difference was obvious
I bought a Polar Verity Sense to combat this, simple fix to get more accurate HR monitoring
it's not being mentioned because people that buy the epix want it for ultra running, golf, hill climb and other serious activities. this is a watch for people that take sports seriously and not a for heart monitoring lol.
I have things set up so they don't overlap and each does what they are best at.
do you wear them on both hands or on the same hand? Is it convenient?
I've been wondering if I shouldn't do the same, so I have the best of both worlds.

Epix is a sport Watch, Apple ultra is a smartwatch! This is the difference. I love Garmin’s ecosystem! Thank you for this video!
Great video, I'd definitely go for the Epix pro simply because I'm an outdoors type and looking forward to a new S24 ultra next year.
I think the biggest difference is that the Garmin Epix Pro's main focus is a sports watch and designed with athletics tracking foremost. The Apples is a media device/extension of your phone that CAN be used as a sports watch.
Exactly right it will never compete with garmin in those categories
i ended up going with the EPIX PRO due to i am an avid golfer.....LOVE this watch and everything about it...cheers all
Being a city guy who walks for exercise, the iWatch is the ticket.
The flashlight is not a tie! One has one, the other doesn't.
I got both. I use both when I go for runs but for everyday tasks I use my ultra all day while I put away my Garmin in a drawer until the next morning when I need to go for a run.
Yeah that’s basically what I do too, Garmin for exercise and AWU for everything else.
Lol!!!!
The apple watch reminds me of a vtech toy watch for kids
@@asmrtake1097OMG, I’m never getting that image out of my head!
Excellent review and spot on. In a nutshell, Epix is for serious outdoor athletes / use while Apple is for everyday urban use. Period.
Mic drop
Really excellent analysis with no BS filler. Keep it up! I have the Garmin Epix pro and Android. Will stay there.
the one thing you forgot to mention is that the garmin can be used 100% without the touch screen, like when you are wet from sweat or rain. as a matter of fact you can turn off the touch screen and only use it on maps or none at all in situations where the water would make thje screen unusuable .
I see that the titanium bezel in the epix is very much more scratched than the Apple Watch. Is this because of usage or is weaker?

How’s the faces options in the Epic compared to the Ultra?
this was the best comparison on youtube of Apple Watch Ultra vs Garmin Epix, thanks a lot!!
😂 “durability testing”
One thing I like about Garmin, you can charge it off the wrist with a small powerbank and the cable especially on ultra runs while tracking your gps progress. I have the first gen instinct and the battery life isn’t what it used to be so i do this. Does the AWU have the same capability as well?
It can charge mid-activity but the charger is magnetic so it’s a little harder to situate in a backpack or running vest or the magnet will let go.
You need to figure out your need, and go for it.
great video. thanks. did you mention the price??
looking at something different to Garmin epic..as my gen 2 really irritates my wrist where the pulse sensor is....
What options are there for Apple Watch Ultra like one on Garmin ecosystem, particularly Garmin training calendar where you can add 5k,10 or marathon plans and it displays under Run activity for that day?
Maybe Nike Running Club app… I found it pretty seamless with AW. It’s pretty basic though.

@@dariuszwojcik1601 yes this works in some ways but it needs to be paid for and not as good as Garmin data which is free.

The watch competition is tough , but in 2023 epix pro is the king 🤓
You can reply to a text with the Ultra, only pre canned with Epix. Both are amazing though.
Great video!
Can you do a review between garmin descent mk3i and ultra 2
Thanks for your time and amazing efforts!
Where/what is Endurance Score that is shown at 4:05? I don’t see that on my Epix
This is new to the Epix Pro series but will roll out to the original Epix Gen 2 soon!
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks for taking the time to answer
Finally someone helps in taking the decision to have a smart phone on wrist or a watch with fitness focus 🧘
Thanks Dave, I have the Apple Watch Ultra but really won’t longer battery life and some of the workout benefits of Garmin. Great review.
One huge factor for me is that I've been using Garmin Connect since around 2011 and I have a ton of data with it and I'm not sure that it could be imported into the AW.
It can not be imported!
What’s the cheapest Garmin Watch with similar offline map as the Epix? Thanks
Probably a used or refurbished Garmin Fenix 6 or 5 Plus.
Let’s not forget that the Epix Pro looks so much better than the AWU! It is looks like an Omega or something from a distance. Also the black titanium is better than uncoloured
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And for gym workouts? Which is better ?
one are the best smart watch in the market, the other is the best sport watch in the market.
one of the biggest reasons I prefer the AWU is i love to listen to music and audio books on the run/walk etc. Yeah you can use music on the gamins but youre stuck with having to add it and change it and no audiobooks. I also run when it's insanely hot outside and there have been times that I have had to call for a ride a mile or so from home because I over estimated my ability to finish the run.
Why not regular AW 8 or 9?
When you talk about the AW requiring apps to do certain things "at an additional cost", I think it's important to note that while that's true, there is an upfront cost difference between the two, with the Garmin costing more.
Подскажите, пожалуйста, на солнце на каком дисплее лучше читается информация, на epix pro или на fenix pro?
Is there any app or add-on for Epix that make possible to fallow Bitcoin price in real time with internet connection via wifi or bt?
Integration with all my Mac devices is the key, I will give up feature’s the Garmin has for that
I think Apple Watch Ultra is a great watch but I prefer the Epix ... the cellular feature I really like to see on the Garmin.
I would never use the Ultra over my Fenix 7X for anything outdoors...
can you compare new running metrics like stride length and etc in comparison to ones from a strap like garmin hrm pro?
I use my watch a lot at the gym, probably the AWU will be the best option right?
yes
It's true that Apple metrics are ''harder'', buried in the Health app. However, the Health App Home Screen can be easily customized with your favorite metrics (I.e. VO2max, Resting HR, HRV, etc.). I Have a Fenix 6 Pro and a AWU2, but regardless of the watch I use, I prefer to view my metrics/data on my phone.
Main issue with AW is their battery, it’s obvious. But also awful that u have to buy subscription on multiple apps to make it work as intended.
Which one should I buy epic gen 2 pro or ultra 2 ?
This video still applies to the Ultra 2.
Great review Epix Pro next for me (upgrade from VivoActiv4)
Great review! Helped me a lot. I own a Fenix 6X and was considering to upgrade. But for me the key to upgrade is the cellular connection. So I guess I will have to wait, if Garmin ever brings this feature.
BTW was is your Greek tattoo on your arm?
Is it not the Gen 2?
I also use Athlytic which is getting very good results…
Can someone tell from their experience whether AWU is more reliable when it comes to accuracy. Like sleep and fitness tracking, HR, sleep stages, etc.. is the data more accurate on AWU or Garmin Epix Pro?
There are scientific reviews on UA-cam and if I remember correctly, AWU has better accuracy.
Garmin Epix Pro Gen 2 51mm ❤❤
Another great video. Which watch do you find you wear daily? If you’re not making a video and just using it for your normal day?
Lately it’s the Forerunner 965
@@ChaseTheSummit I’m a little surprised. 😊 I thought it’d be the epix. 🤷♂️. Trying to decide between these is proving difficult. I have the apple ultra and it’s fine but I just really want to track more and the battery life is a factor. My training runs are split between road and trail and all of my races will be trail. I also swim a few times a week and attend CrossFit classes 2-3 times a week.
Thanks for the good review. If I may say, they are two very different watches, each for its own unique purpose. Unfortunately, 3 days battery life kills the AW entirely.
Which one would you say that has the largest (easier to read) fonts?
They're both easy to read. The Apple Watch allows you to customize font size.
If you want to Chase the Summit, looks like Garmin is the way here 😉
I like this channel much better rather than the other ones which just cherry pick all the negatives about everything
No one ever really says this; Garmin is a sports watch with some smart features. Apple Watch is a smart watch with very capable fitness/sports features. It all depends what you want.
