    Great video! By the way, Multi-Band GPS means the device can receive GPS signals via multiple frequency bands, not that they can connect to two satellites (they natively receive signals from all in range). The multiple frequencies help to reduce errors caused by environmental interference. Also, our watches need at least 3 satellites to be able to triangulate location, but often use 4 or more!

    The Apple Watch Ultra smoothing is interesting because while it’s not “accurate” to the distance your body moves, it is accurate to the distance you are concerned about. In other words, when running a marathon you don’t care about the zig zagging distance you run since the goal is the race length. That’s also why the pacing is more accurate. For example, if I run 400m on a track, I just care about the 400m time and not about any zig zags and the extra few meters I may run (in the case I can’t run straight haha). Great review(s) - really like this kind of video 👍🏾

    • @DeeKay1911
      @DeeKay1911 17 днів тому +1

      @@MalcomJones Spot on! Running several marathons the bang on distance-pacing is what you need to hit your goal! Also regarding the track the Apple Watch Ultra is bang on with the track mode (several brands have a different take so many good)

    • @ShervinShares
      @ShervinShares  17 днів тому +2

      Yes this is such a tough one to pick. Do you go with actual distance data or the distance data that best matches for a race
      Even if workouts are off - is it better to run a little more & faster just you’re ready for race day with zig zagging

    • @adamluthfie7
      @adamluthfie7 12 днів тому

      agree. this means the apple watch ultra algoritm focus on the things that is important.

    Great video. The math is off for whoever said that marathon majors should be 26.4 miles or greater. An extra 0.1% of 26.2 gives 26.2262, barely a difference in the grand scheme of things. In all likelihood you did run a quarter to a half a mile in excess just with all the weaving around and deviation from the shortest line however.

    I don’t really run so the Ultra has been great for what I need. Hiking/backpacking/bikepacking along that sweet trail we have all the way to Canada is fairly well tracked through it. Compass/waypoint complication is great for when I wander through the woods. Brothers employee discount also doesn’t hurt lol.
    Sister is a runner and definitely prefers the Garmin. If it’s purely for running it’s pretty hard to beat. Battery life is insane on her solar.
    Meanwhile our 70yo father running or volunteering in every marathon around the city denies our offers for anything he wants. Wild considering he got us into tech/running/cycling. Man wants the latest iPhones but not a watch when he runs daily smh.

    i'm still curious about people in reddit saying "buy HR strap" when you can actually get values from optical sensors from watches nowadays. i mean when they tell that, they tell it like smart watches' HR monitor is soooo bad.

    • @krabn
      @krabn 18 днів тому +4

      yea. it's not 100% accurate but you get good range on where you're at. i sold my polar H10 monitor a year ago, i get very close values so i don't think it's worth it anymore

    • @antigen6870
      @antigen6870 17 днів тому +4

      For marathon intensity which is steady state it's the optimal conditions for wrist HR, it's only when someone wants to integrate interval training, or some other sports with wrist flexion that strap is then considerably better.

    • @Adurianman
      @Adurianman 17 днів тому +2

      Depending on temperature, how tight you have it, and your skin colour (darker skin blocks the optical sensor more) it ranges from accurate to wildly inaccurate and actually tracking your running steps per minute. Before my most recent watch which is the fenix 7plus with the new hrm, every gps watch I used would not pick up my heart rate accurately at all no matter how tight or loose I have the band in non steady state slow run activities compared to my chest strap

    Bro u nailed it !
    awesome video really ! need to get my first watch, i do mostly trail (training and racing) and some HM with elevation too! never too flat :p
    so for me elevation need to be accurate, but when i compare it's crazy for my brain that's they cant have accurate metrics on official races in 2024 watches. as u said well 'a fitness tracker' yeah just to have some numbers but dont think too much about it since not one is fully accurate on distance and elevation, so all the datas r "wrong" with the algorithms.
    When i see that i m like i should just keep my strava premium account and still run with my iphone. strava is way less accurate than watch ? since they use the tech of a phone (better than a watch) im like maybe not that mucH?
    so yeah i guess when u have one, u have one u dont care anymore :) but for a first choice i dunno where to go! i have in my mind a garmin, pace pro or suunto race (s)
    if u have any advice im ready to listen and understand, thanks again for this top vid !

    Very cool comparison Shervin! Thanks for putting in the work to get all this data. Wouldn't the distance of Apple Watch Ultra 2 be least likely to be correct given the amount of weaving required in the race? Doesn't seem too likely that is only .06 miles over an entire marathon. It would seem the other distances, which were all very close, are more likely to be correct. Great video! 💪🏃

    • @ShervinShares

When I run at what should be the same pace as what's clocked on the watch (for zone 2) on the treadmill, I have a much harder time keeping my heart rate low. From your results, I guess there must be something else going on. The watch 10 wasn't significantly off in your data.

    GPS devices can interfere with each other if they are in close proximity. This can happen due to **GPS jamming**, where GPS signals are overwhelmed by unknown signals, leading to inaccurate or incomplete locations. So, devices that are close to each other can cause interference and affect accuracy. And not just your waches on your arms. There were lots of waches from other runners...

    Great video. I actually find the trail loop on the Apple Watch Ultra to be the worst band for collecting data. The standard sport loops do a better job for me. Think it’s the width of the titanium lugs that push the band wider on my wrist. When I first got my ultra I was like it’s not great at reading heart rate but for me it’s actually this band style.

    @3:14 the commenter messed up the math. They added 1% to the distance (multiplied by a factor of 1.01). The actual USATF guidance is 0.1% (AKA a safety factor of 1.001). So an actual marathon is about 42 meters longer than the official 26.22 distance (roughly 26.25 miles), not the 420 meters as their comment suggested.

    The funny thing is, I would say it's safe to say all if not mass majority of runners and also viewers of this video period are not Pros. The fact that by your data the ultra 2 was only 3 seconds off shows how little the count down style actually matters overall. Pair that with the fact the apple watch is a much better smart watch period compared to the rest, I would say for most runners they should go for the apple watch ultra if they have an iphone.

    Regarding the Apple Watch Ultra 2… to achieve the most accurate heart rate (HR) readings, as close as possible to the Polar H10, I tried two bands: the Trail Loop and the Ocean Band. The Trail Loop is a soft, very comfortable band, but it causes more movement while running compared to the Ocean Band, which is stiffer yet still fairly comfortable and stays more securely on the wrist. This results in less movement that could interfere with HR accuracy. Therefore, I’ve found the Ocean Band to be much better suited for the AWU2 (which is heavier than the AW10) to obtain a more accurate HR.

    uhm, you could put the chest strap on the watch you have on your hand. Trex2 should support external sensors. In this way you could check HR measurement of all other devices.

    Out of curiosity do you know how big your wrist is. I'm considering the Fenix 8, not many stores here have any in stock so I need to order it. Is it noticable bigger than the Apple Watch Ultra 2?

    The 3-2-1 on the Apple Watch can be over written by just double tapping the screen 😂. I’m surprised soo many ppl don’t know this and actually wait for the count down

  • @RonaldSullivans
    @RonaldSullivans 17 днів тому +1

    Dude. I’ve heard you complain about precision start on regular Apple Watch and non action button starts multiple times. If you tap the screen as the countdown starts, it immediately starts the workout. You don’t have to wait on the countdown.

    • @ShervinShares
      @ShervinShares  17 днів тому +3

      It’s not the same!! I want to see that GPS signal is acquire and I want to start the workout without looking at the screen (and tapping twice on the screen)
      Not ideal for the start of a race or start of a run with a group

    I’m all about the metrics. That said, if you normalize things each device is roughly within ~10% of each other.
    For what matters for most people, battery length aside, there’s a lot of good options out there.
    Side note, sweat loss as metric will only matter to the 1% of athletes. Even then, following a steady protocol and intuition makes that micro analysis a waste of time.

  • @tonyalvarado4810

    Apple is most likely factoring the known distance data and route, then giving you that "merged" calculation with what you actually ran, which is cheating. That would explain the straight lines and the "distance". The other watches are giving mostly raw data which is more fair.

    • @ShervinShares
      @ShervinShares  17 днів тому +1

      Yes they’ll all run algorithms on the raw GPS signal. So they’re interpreting it in different ways too

    I combo the HRM Pro Plus with my Apple Watch Ultra, i get the best of both worlds there, I havent ever seen the orange screen of death... im kidna wondering if you should wipe your phone and watch and NOT do a restore, maybe some config somewhere is busted and keeps restoring. just do icloud syncing to get your messages and photos back... just a suggestion since it seems to happen alot more to you than i think most people.

    For me, as a runner who also wants my watch to serve other functions, I think the Apple Watch (or in my case the Galaxy Watch) makes the most sense.

    I have Garmin Fenix 7x and Apple Watch 8. I have caught the Apple watch "cheating" at GPS tracking repeatedly. Where I live there are often walking dirt trails that follow along beside streets but are 15-20 ft over from the sidewalk. I've had the Apple Watch repeatedly show me tracking perfectly straight on the sidewalk when I am in fact running on the dirt trail a good distance over from the sidewalk. A video that catches the Apple Watch doing this repeatedly would probably get a lot of attention.

    I have the apple 10 watch and im surprised how close your distance and pace was compared with the other watches. If i run 4 miles, my watch only says 3.5 with a longer pace time than my app on my phone says. And yes, it is exactly a 4 mile run. I had the SE watch a few years ago and it did the same thing. Made me feel slower than i actually am. I dont trust it for that. It doesnt matter where i run either. Mostly Im out in the country but have run in towns too and same result.
